Why are we doing a red carpet post on Saturday morning, traditionally a High Holy Day of Rest for all bitchy fashion bloggers? Because ATTENTION MUST BE PAID, DARLINGS. Kelly Marie Tran has been slaying the hell out of the promotional tour for Raya and the Last Dragon, showing up over and over again in head-turning high fashion, often highlighting the work of Asian designers in the process.
But girlfriend really stepped her game the hell up for the literal, actual red carpet, a thing that’s about as rare as a unicorn sighting these days.

Wow.
The red carpet isn’t always the best place for spotlighting folkwear or fashion designs that incorporate traditional ethnic design elements. It’s an arena that calls for bold, surface-level simplicity because it’s so image-based. The only time in recent memory that a sustained promotional tour incorporating folk elements really worked, was during the Black Panther poledance, when so many of the cast members wore fashion that used elements from African cultures and design. But this? This is next level. What an absolute stunner of a look.
We’re not the (white) guys to give you all of the details on the nuances of this design. We’re fortunate enough to follow culture journalist Diep Tran on Twitter and her delight over this ensemble was both wonderful to see and educational to boot. We’re happy to shut up and let her walk you through it:
Kelly Marie Tran wore an áo dài and khăn đống by Thai Nguyen on the #Raya virtual red carpet. Give us the entire outfit, Disney! I need multiple shots. People need to know how magnificent Vietnamese headdresses are.

As for us, we’re just gonna sit over here, eyes wide and jaws agape. We did NOT expect to end the week with such an amazing outfit.
