Everyone step back. A diva is serving.
For last night’s Grammy Sounds of Change special, Genius: Aretha star Cynthia Erivo came to sing (“Imagine,” FYI), but let’s face it; no matter how amazing the performance might have been, this appearance was all about the visuals – and what visuals they were. Check this insane look out:
She has this knack for working looks that all fall under what we call “space queen fashion.” If someone wore this in a Star Wars movie, it wouldn’t stand out in that setting at all -except as one of the more gorgeous costumes in the film. If we’re being honest, we don’t necessarily think this is pretty so much as it’s awe-inspiring. That seems to be the driving force behind all of her public style choices: How much can I make people’s jaws drop when I step out?
Even though this is haute couture from one of the most famous fashion houses in the world, we find it difficult (or more accurately, unneccesary) to critique it on conventional style standards. Yes, it’s unwieldy and the cowl is sometimes too heavy-looking to appear effortless, but on her, in this setting, it’s way more about stage impact than it is about chicness or elegance. You won’t forget this one any time soon.
