Jennifer Hudson in Reem Acra at the BET Awards

Kittens, we won’t lie. When a publicist’s email showed up in our inbox to announce that Miss Jennifer Hudson was wearing a Reem Acra gown, we got a little verklempt. Things felt almost normal there for a second. Does this mean we will sheathe our claws in celebration of this glorious return to colorful, eye-catching, statement-making celebrity style? Sure. Okay. It’s not like we have to work to be nice about it or anything.

HAVING SAID THAT…

Oh, come on. You just know we had a few things to get off our perky, manly chests.

Look, it’s a bold and head-turning sort of look. It was really well-chosen for performing against an all-white backdrop and the colorful beading at the collar is perfect for giving her face a little dazzle for the closeups. Also, her hair looks spectacular. But if we’re being honest, we don’t love the design here. It looks so shapeless and heavy, not to mention lopsided. The fishnet feels incongrous with the rest of the design and we really dislike the distracting shoulder seams.

But look: Miss Jennifer is serving and that’s all we’ve really asked of our celebs during this time. We appreciate the effort, the return to “I’ve got a movie coming out so I’m getting dressed up” celebrity power dressing, and the shot of color and sparkle and fabulous hair that we needed. We will always be the bitches who quibble over the details, but the big picture is all good – and very welcome.
