Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte at the 2019 InStyle Awards

The Kirsten Dunst/Rodarte relationship (which is partially born out of her real friendship with the Mulleavey sisters) has been a mutually beneficial one. Kiki (who we call that because we like to fantasize that we’d be great friends if only we weren’t such bitches) doesn’t really go for boldly sexy or highly glamorous looks. She does, however, give the impression that she likes fashion, so long as it’s got a little quirk to it; something that speaks to her or suits her. She’s got too much quirk herself to have to suffer through boring or generic fashion. The funny thing is, the trends caught up to Rodarte because while this frock is a perfect example of what we’re talking about, it’s also become so trendy a look amongst the celebrity lady set that we were almost feeling a bit let down.

There are so many sparkly, ruffly birthday-girl dresses out there now, but we have to remember that Rodarte was doing it long before it became such a red carpet standard. This looks great on her, but we would have issues with it on a range of other wearers. We do think Elle Fanning could make it work and we definitely think Gugu Mbatha-Raw could. After that, it gets questionable on anyone older than Millie Bobby Brown.

Anyway, she looks great, but since this look has become so standard, maybe it’s time to refresh. Pick some other style that’s 3 to 5 years ahead of the trend.
