On the one hand, it’s to be expected that Miss Natalie will more than likely wear a black Dior dress with fairly little in the way of visual interest. She’s got both a contract with the house and a longheld preference for minimalist, unfussy fashion. Fine. We’ve been doing this gig so long that we find ourselves getting a lot more forgiving of the limitations and preferences of stars who’ve been doing their gigs even longer. You want your plain black Diorness, girl? Go for it.
But goodness, isn’t it time to retire the ballerina drag?
It wasn’t the freshest take in the world back when she was campaigning for the Black Swan Oscar, but it’s gotten increasingly dull as the years have ticked by. We realize being married to a famous ballet dancer may have had some sort of effect on her fashion aesthetic. Maybe she doesn’t even realize she looks like a ballerina all the time because she’s surrounded by them. We don’t know her life. We just know that we’d kill to see her in a color, with her hair blown out, and maybe a fresher, more modern take on the makeup. She’s way too young and way too busy an artist and movie star to be in this much of a style rut. To be accurate and fair about it: she really doesn’t look bad or unstylish here. But it all comes off fairly perfunctory.
