It seems almost pointless to say that someone looks silly at this year’s Met Gala, or that they’re trying too hard. The whole evening was populated by people looking silly and one might argue that the entire point to the Met Gala is to try too hard.

Even so…

They said they were inspired by John Waters and Divine, among other things, but we really don’t see that in the final product. This looks way more like classic ’80s/’90s Club Kid looks. It’s not a terrible direction to go in for the theme, but the Club Kids were always too self-aware to be considered camp. Still, doing a queer, downtown nightlife kind of look is better than we’d have expected from these two and it’s just goofy and eye-catching enough to wave them through. The shoe choices are terrible, though. All that energy up top and you go for a basic party shoe on the bottom? Thigh-highs or GTFO, we say.

There’s a queer undertone to the night’s theme, but interpreting that to mean that you both should play-act queerness for the cameras is annoying.
