You know what? RESPECT, girl.
That is an unusually high-fashion, editorial sort of look for an actress nominee to be wearing to the Oscars. We loved it at first glance for its high impact and the unique design. It’s a really bold move coming from her, since she didn’t dress for impact at all through most of awards season – or generally over the course of her career. This feels statement-making in a way her style choices never were before. We like the newfound confidence and willingness to be adventurous. We do not, however, love the side view, which is distorting her shape just a bit too much and in the wrong ways. We don’t mind an accentuated hip on a gown, but she’s “accentuated” all around and the waist is hitting her much higher than it does on the model. Instead of a flared skirt it looks like a filled-out maternity dress.
Still, like we said: Respect. Nominated actresses almost never wear something this challenging.
