If Beale Street Could Talk is going to be one of the buzzier movies of awards season, which is good news for a lot of reasons, not least of which is the involvement of director Barry Jenkins, or the chance to expose the brilliance of James Baldwin to modern audiences, or even the opportunity for new faces and voices to enter the scene. But because we’re shallow, we love that it’s giving us beautiful people in eye-popping clothes to talk about.

You haven’t seen any lady stars wearing a suit like that and you haven’t seen any gentlemen stars sporting such a well-curated casual look. What we love about both looks is how they play with expectations. You don’t expect a bright yellow sweater on a male star on a red carpet, let alone one paired with skinny plaid pants and a moto. It’s fun and it takes a great picture while still coming off dressy enough for the occasion. Our only quibble is with the footwear, which is nice enough but doesn’t really go with the jacket. As for her look, we think we love that it comes off glamorous and also a little granny at the same time. She’s young enough to pull it off, and the styling does a lot to keep it feeling fresh. Maybe they’re not the most technically perfect red carpet looks or even the most fashion-forward, but they’re both interesting and eye-catching and above all else, different from the usual. Kiki and Stephan, welcome to the red carpet. Please keep returning to it.
