Rihanna in Helmut Lang in New York City

Posted on August 19, 2014

Major celebs all seem to have crawled into their hidey-holes for a few days of pre-Emmys/pre-VMAs hibernation, leaving bitchy celebrity fashion bloggers such as we with nothing to discuss. How tragic.

But this is why we love Ri. Ri knows when to give the bitches a little something. And she also knows there’s no point in going crazy or putting too much effort in. The celebrity style landscape is so barren in late August that there’s no way she’s gonna risk a crotch rash or a snapped ankle just to parade around in some insane getup for the paps. Save that shit for the month before the Oscars, when every A-lister alive is fighting for the dubious honor of a mention in Us magazine. All she has to do this week is plop on her Cher wig and a cute pair of shoes to get the job done.

Not that the dress is without its particular subset of charms. It’s certainly right up her alley. We don’t know anyone who can work pseudo-’80s fashion as well as she does right now.

Anyway, thank you, Ri; for giving us something to talk about while making it look (as per usual) that you give no fucks about anything we have to say. Attadiva.

Hate how cheap the wig looks, but otherwise she looks fierce

    • Kristi Mitchell

that wig looks as cheap as Gaga’s blonde wig she was dragging all over for her album pole dance. You can’t tell me these people can’t afford a higher quality wig if they are going to insist on wearing one. Maybe they need to give Bert Reynolds former people a call.

  • Carrie

Love how effortless it all looks and that the dress isn’t ridiculously short either!

  • Nikko Viquiera

That color looks fantastic on her! The dress looks kinda dowdy on the model but it looks refreshing on her!

  • SewingSiren

Everything works , even the wig. She has styled it completely different than the designers intent and it still looks good.

    • ktr33

      Better, I’d contend.

  • @Biting Panda

I love her more every day.
For a girl who seemed to be determined to crash and burn, she very quietly turned things around.

I’m ready for another great dance song, or a ballad about broken love.

    Do you, Ri. Do you.

  • MilaXX

    thank you Rhi

  • Boobs Radley

That look book pic of the dress looks straight outta the Lands End catalogue.

    • Nah, it is too conservative for Lands End. LL Bean all the way.

      • Wait—I would have put both LE and LLB as equally conservative. There’s a difference?

      • MoHub

Pure Coldwater Creek. And Lands’ End has upped its style game in the last couple of years.

        • mdcoon127

Coldwater Creek, may it rest in peace…

          • MoHub

Nope. Don’t miss it at all.

    • MoHub

Can you imagine ordering the dress based on that picture and then finding out about the slits and the cutouts?

      • DuBey2

Hah! Some grandmas are not too happy right now as they open their mail..

      • Ali2044

If you can afford to order a $400 Helmut Lang dress on the basis of one photo on the internet then I assume you’d probably just throw it in the rag box and wash the car with it.

  • RescueMe23

Congratulations! She has now moved to the #1 spot on my irrational hate list. Brava Rhi Brava!

    • sojourneryouth

She grates on me too, but I can’t deny how fierce she is in moments such as this. That isn’t an easy dress to pull off, but it’s easy for her!

    • sugarkane105

Lol I find her style choices annoying most of the time too, but can I ask what about this look sent you over the edge? The wig?

      • RescueMe23

Since the list is irrational – the nails, the wig, the smugness of her. I told someone once that if I had one chance to sucker-punch someone it would be her. I’m sure there’s a few others too! LOL

        • Thomas

That was me lol Mine would be Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian or Kris Jenner.

          • Glam Dixie

Oh those are good ones, I would like to add JLo.

          • Thomas

I like JLo and Rihanna. After seeing Taylor Swift’s new music video involving cultural appropriation and using black people as props, I kind of want to punch her in the head to knock some sense into her. You’d think she would know better after Miley, Katy Perry and Lily Allen came under fire for the same or similar things. You’d think her team would have told her not to do it. Some celebrities seem so oblivious. It’s like they live in a glass bubble.

          • Glam Dixie

I don’t know, cultural appropriation is such a blurry area, cultures are blending to such an extent that it’s getting harder to call it versus just cultural appreciation, however I have not seen the video in question.

          • alyce1213

Give it a look, just for argument’s sake. I don’t agree with Thomas (sorry, love). I don’t think “black people were used as props” as Miley or others did. In context of the entire video, I see references, many references, not any particular appropriation. I know I’m not oblivious. Discuss . . .
            Am I in trouble here?

(Not saying it’s a great song, or anything — fluff pop with a positive message)

          • Glam Dixie

She appropriated cheerleader culture!! That bitch! We are in agreement here, I think the video is cute and fun fluff. I see no wrong done to any culture.

          • Thomas

I thought it looked like her mostly black backup dancers were props when she crawled under them twerking looking all “Ooh. Aah. These people are weird.” It just kind of made me feel uncomfortable, esp. the GIF I saw of that scene after watching the video. The song’s not bad though. I prefer the pop country of her first three albums though. I used to be a big fan of hers. Her pop stuff is too “teeny bopper” for me. I wish she would go back to the pop country.

          • sojourneryouth

The TS video is straight up appalling. I’m a bit speechless about it, to be honest.

          • demidaemon

I have a shake vigorously/throttle list and a punch in the face list. The throttles are ones who irritate me but I feel can be improved. The punch in the face is for those who are too long gone.

For example, Taylor is on my throttle list because a) I feel she is still moldable and b) she has some talent.

Justin Bieber is on the punch in the face list.

          • Kitten Mittons

This is good. I’ll need to rearrange my list into two lists now.

          • I didn’t get that feeling at all watching Taylor’s new video. Taylor loves to dance. We see this all time when the cameras insist on panning to her in the audience dancing out of wack at award shows. So, she just used her love for dancing (and even making fun of herself not knowing how to dance) in her video. She took on ballet, cheerleading, hip-hop, break dancing, contemporary, etc. She was just showing her appreciation for each genre.

And trust and believe anytime I see a girl twerking (correctly, I must add) I’m left awestruck. lolol. Also, the hip-hop dancers were not all black ladies. She just ended staring up at the last lady – who so happened to be black.

  • ktvon

amazing how the dress takes on a whole new character when put on ri, compared to the model

  • Anna

Not a fan of the wig and I feel like the shoes belong with Stephanie Seymour’s wedding dress in the November Rain video, but only Rihanna could make a tank dress look sexy and not Lands’ End catalogue beach cover-up.

    • Kitten Mittons

Good call on the shoes! I still give them a pass. Love this bitch.

    • decormaven

      November Rain video- spot on!

    • quiltrx

See, I totally see shoes that belong in the November Rain video as a fabulous thing 😉
I wish the shoes had the cutouts but not the strings. It’s the late 80s/early 90s in me.

  • Only RiRi could wear a Cher wig and I would fall all over myself to snap my fingers in respect.

  • Kent Roby

She looks terrific. Mortals should avoid everything she’s wearing (the Barbie pink dress, cheap-looking wig, and Southern Belle Stripper shoes), yet her overall look is fierce. Well done yet again, Rhi.

    • @Biting Panda

Southern Belle Stripper shoes – bless!!

  • Still can’t stand white pumps/heels but I like the design of the shoe. The dress is really nice mainly because of the fantastic color. And a big ol’ nayyyy to the wig. But this is Rihanna. She probably figured that the rest of her look was way too normal for her standards so she had to umph it up somewhere.

    • alyce1213

Just commented how great this would be with her own hair – short, natural.

    • kimmeister

Meanwhile, I don’t mind the whiteness of the shoe at all, it’s just the tying around the ankles that bugs me.

  • She makes that dress look much better than it deserves.

    • Kent Roby

She makes every element (dress, wig, shoes) look better than they deserve.

  • TinyDynamo

Did she alter the dress? It’s so much more WOW on her than the model pic. But dang if she isn’t making this look work. It’s not my style, but I totally respect her ability to make anything she wears her own. Well done, lady RiRi.

  • papillon

First time I’ve ever liked a Louboutin.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I know, right? Those shoes might as well be Belk.

  • B_C_J

She looks good but can’t get past the hair.

  • Julie Chase

Not a fan of the dress, but that color was MADE for her.

  • sugarkane105

I love this. The color is gorgeous, and that cuff is beautiful. The hair’s a bit much, but I’m just glad she put on something besides lingerie.

  • tallgirl1204

It looks nice and stretchy– something that you could actually enjoy eating dinner in.

  • marlie

This is totally her look. My only issue is with the too-wiggy wig. Otherwise, great color and fun shoes.

  • kim bunchalastnames

looks like a werq to me. 🙂

  • Kathy

She can really chic-the-hell-up some questionable looks.

  • Glam Dixie

We’re going to have to start giving these wig makers props in the photo credits the way we do bags, shoes, etc. They are so commonplace now and the poor wig makers get no credit. She is making that ugly dress sing, those shoes are killer. She’s ma-ah-ah-ah-gic.

    • Qitkat

Someday, probably not in my lifetime, lol, people will go back to wearing their own hair. Then the compliment “I love your/her hair” will actually mean something again. It’s gotten to the point where I question every hairstyle whether or not it’s a wig, and although there’s no rational reason that ought to bother me, it does, damn it. I don’t run around in wigs, and I wish for the most part, celebrities in their normal, ie red carpet/clubbing/leaving the gym/parking lot/going on late night lives didn’t either. Wigs are fine as part of costuming for a role, of course, I would guess used more often than not these days of HD. But what a big old chore and a bore to have to dress that way always, just like wearing tons of makeup as normal. Making fake the new normal I guess.

Do I sound exceptionally cranky this morning? I would make a terrible celebrity.

Ri pushes all my buttons, ‘specially the bad ones, but I’ll accede that she looks lovely in this color.

      • Glam Dixie

It actually makes me a bit cranky too. My daughters were forever saying, why won’t my hair do that, look how pretty and thick her hair is, I want her hair. I’ve finally convinced them that that actress doesn’t even have that hair. It’s a ton of extensions, a fall or a wig. Fake is definitely the new normal. When girls get boobs as graduation presents, things have gotten ridiculous. And I don’t like Ri either, that Ma-ah-ah-ah-gic was my dig at her for her bleating singing voice.

        • @Biting Panda

MEOW Kittens, @Qitkat:disqus and @glamdixie:disqus, the claws are out!! I love it, Darlings.

      • DuBey2

Talk about “no rational reason that ought to bother me”… I feel the exact same way about implants. Don’t know why, but I always think, “hey thats not fair” & I also feel that way about pretty much all vanity surgery. (not so much facelifts, but changing the very basic of one’s own bone structure or, ahem, tissue structure.

        • alyce1213

I feel the same about breast implants. They make me angry. (Of course, these feelings don’t apply to reconstruction, and I realize that problems of severe asymmetry, etc. are important to address and fix.) The overwhelming number of women who just want to go bigger and bigger is distressing and does not speak well to the perceived value of women, or to their own self-esteem.

        • Qitkat

I tend to mostly agree. I’ve also just realized that I could have a great deal to say on the subject, so I will spare the kittens for today 😉

Somewhere I have heard that women in their forties often have attained a quality through living and a few lines that makes it one of the most attractive decades of her life. Doing work on oneself far too young denies one the chance to see what time might have bestowed as a gift; trying to hold onto it way past that time with too much reconstruction just contributes to unnatural aging that we are all too familiar with seeing in the entertainment world.

    • Kent Roby

No lie, after scrolling through the photos and starting with the comments, I scrolled back up to see if the wig designer was listed!

  • sojourneryouth

She looks great (love the dress on her!), but that wig is pure strip mall Halloween store.

    • oldscrumby

It’s Rhianna’s best Cher wig, not Cher’s best wig.

      • sojourneryouth

Then she’d have been better off going to the beauty store next door to the Halloween store and buying some Yaki!

    • Wink

Yeah, that wig is a cross between Elvira and country singer Crystal Gayle.

  • Bethany Roullett

I love those shoes every time I see a picture of them. However, I find myself not loving them as much when I see them on an actual foot. I guess I won’t be buying a pair for myself after all. Oh right, also because I can’t afford them in a million years.

  • formerlyAnon

Being a celebrity is a weird, weird life.

Joining the chorus of approval for what she’s doing for that oddball dress.

  • FibonacciSequins

I’m not in love with the scrollwork cut-outs on those shoes. Otherwise her style game is so on point.

    • formerlyAnon

Once upon a time, I had Payless shoes with very similar cutouts – though significantly different shoes, a comfortable faux-oxford, nearly flat suede shoe – and wore them while attempting to meld a hippie/boho and a girly summer aesthetic, with poor success. You will understand that these shoes are tainted for me.

  • KendraMR

Dat color is glorious on her.

  • YeahYeahFashion

I was hoping these pics would be the set of her walking into the club after dinner in this dress and New Balance sneakers, which was not as successful of a look as these before she changed her shoes.

  • formerlyAnon

    Misplaced comment

  • NMMagpie

That cuff is giving me life.

  • frannyprof

That wig is making my scalp itch in sympathy.

  • ashtangajunkie

She looks fab. Love the hot pink on her. I am full of love today. Best lay off the coffee, else I lose my bitchy side entirely.

  • Wink

I wonder if she will regret the hand/arm tattoos later… like in 15-20 years?

    • Coolekat

I wonder, too. As a woman on the verge of Medicare, I long for that beautiful skin of youth. I abused mine with the Florida sun and lived to regret it – stage 2 Melanoma and severe wrinkling.

      • Qitkat

Oh, Coolekat, that is rough. I hope your treatments have stopped the cancer in its tracks. I grew up in Florida too, and keep wondering if some of those sunburns will come back to haunt me.
Having already hit Medicare age, I have pretty much forgotten what my youthful skin looked like, except I smile every time I look at my young grandsons and how incredibly fresh and beautiful and amazing the skin of little children is.

  • alyce1213

This would have worked if she dropped the cheap-looking wig and just went with her own hair — short and sassy — in August. That wig completely ruins the ease of this dress, brings it down from effortless to tackyland.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

That wig probably weighs more than she does.

  • Yoshio

Love the rendition of the classic hot pink, white and black color combination in this outfit. The solid, stripe and scroll work in the various pieces adds to the interest. This was not an accidental outfit – looks well thought to me. No comment on the wig.

    • kimmeister

I, too, love the color combo. I particularly like the clutch. It looks like frogs are smiling at me from either end of the adornment on the front.

      • 3boysful

        I adore the clutch, too.

  • Beto

Cheap wig, but those shoes. The graphic designer in me wants those arabesques somehow for some project. Bitch knows how to style even for the most mundane of the occasions.

  • what not

What I really like about her is that she isn’t afraid to mix it up. Hot chick types so often get stuck in show-your-assets mode–see Kim K, or Heidi–and while she’s got heels and tight bits going on here, it’s different and more covered up than her usual, and she presents that without apology. That’s some great confidence.

  • suzq

These pictures are everything I love about New York City. See, in LA, the night clubs are in a night club district. Each has an alley out back for garbage and deliveries. If there’s trash or a garbage can, someone puts a potted plant in front of it. In NYC, it’s all out there for everyone to see. Rihanna, in her Helmut Lang, will step out of her stretch limo and confidently walk past cardboard boxes, strewn trash, and delivery trucks. Just don’t get someone’s chew-up gum on those Louboutins!

  • boweryboy

It’s uncanny how she makes fugly work.

  • evave2

I love the shoes, I merely like the dress, I HATE with the power of 1000 suns the wig. Jesu Christi that is one horrible horrible wig. I bet she was sitting on it all night.

  • KayEmWhy

Sorry, but that wigs GOT TO GO!

  • jilly_d

I loved this until I caught the side view. Are those…….biker shorts? Eccchhhh

  • WaterGhost

I saw those pumps at Payless last week. 30% off.

She looks like she’s having fun, but that lipstick is too close in colour to the dress. It’s the only laboured point in the outfit, but it throws the whole thing off.

  • HeisenbergHattie

That wig ….. ready for Elvira- Mistress of the Dark? To be honest, I’m just jealous I don’t have that wig.

  • conniemd

Oooh she’s eating at Food Channel regular and Iron Chef Alex Guarnascelli’s restaurant Butter. I adore watching her. Congrats on the good taste Rhi. I wouldn’t have expected that of you.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

For some totally irrational reason I love those shoes. Ri looks great in that color.

    • livesarah

Yes. I’m 100% certain I would hate them if I saw them in a store. And that dress too. But she has a way of making everything work.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

In my fantasy life, in which I’m 20 years younger, 40 pounds lighter, and with healthy knees, I picture myself in those shoes-but in real life, Rihanna makes them, and the dress work.

  • Kimberlini

OK we know RiRi goes out to dinner every night and we get to see what she wears. I want to know what she eats!

  • NinjaCate

I hate everything about this look, but that colour just SINGS on her.

  • Liz

    Rihanna is EVERYTHING

  • musi_

only rihanna could do this. i’m jealous. but i really cannot praise that hair…
