IN or OUT: Chloë Moretz in Burberry and Dolce&Gabbana at Barnes & Noble

Posted on August 06, 2014

Let’s throw this one to our Vicious Kittens for a vote, shall we?

Chloe-Moretz-Burberry-Dolce-Gabanna-Christian-Louboutin-NBBSMF-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Chloe Moretz signs copies of the book “If I Stay” at Barnes & Noble in Miami, Florida in a Burberry English lace shirt paired with a Dolce&Gabbana high-waisted skirt and Christian Louboutin ‘Belly Nodo’ white t-bar sandals.

Our thoughts, in no particular order:

1. Those blues don’t go together.

2. That skirt is the only cute part of the outfit.

3. It’s all dull.

We just can’t seem to work up more than that. But you little darlings can go on and on when you want to. And you know you want to.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! It’s adorably NORMCORE!

OUT! Ugly and mismatched will never be chic in my book.

The negatives just barely outweighed the positives with Vanessa Hudgens’ I Dream of Jeannie Goes to South Beach getup, which got an OUT.

Everything about it is boring. And I wag my finger at her wearing a see through shirt. Not on my watch, young lady.

      • mshesterp

        Seriously–I don’t care if it’s a flesh-toned bra, she’s what, 17? NO.

        • Ginmaru

I thought she was 15. Sheesh.

          • JeanDNelson

I just <- got paid $7500 parttime working online with a lap-top by Google.I am making a good salary from h.ome $5500-$7000/weekLast Monday got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. • Candice Jones

don’t mind the see-through-ness of it, but for a daytime appearance at Barnes and Noble? wrong place to deploy that particular style choice

        • RussellH88

Under the harsh light of day, it just becomes a game of Spot the Nipple.

      • FuhUgh

      • Gaby

Yep. My first thought was basically the “nope octopus” gif. Just- “NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE.”

    • PeggyOC

Out. The skirt and even the shoes are the start of a great outfit, but the shirt is just a bridge too far.

    • SAA

Out – I like the skirt quite a bit, but the entire ensemble is a boring mess. She’s too young and cute to be dressing this dull.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Ugly truckstop waitress will never be chic in my book.

    • TM

The shirt and shoes are def cute–but gosh who the shirt. I know mixing and matching is cool and all but that’s not it.

    • lecoffeeaddict

OUT. Not only is the top verging on inappropriate, but it washes out the only redeemable part of the look (i.e., the skirt). Tsk tsk.

    • BobStPaul

Out though the skirt is cute. The outfit is oddly aging for some reason.

    • decormaven

What a snoozefest of a look. Out.

    • Alex Palombo

Out. Skirt is adorable, shirt doesn’t go.

    • rh33

OUT. First day as an office temp.

    • Beardslee

Out. that washed out, tacky blouse is all kinds of wrong and I agree with my fellow BK’s who think that this little girl needs to switch it out with something more decorous.

    • International Model

OUT. “Racy Tracy Flick” should never be a thing.

    • RescueMe23

OUT, and I’m too tired to tell you why..

    • Bonnie Blue

Out. I don’t like wondering if her blouse is really see-through on someone her age, and the skirt reminds me of a waitress apron.

      • sienna elm

Don’t wonder – it is see-through. I second your out.

    • Anapestic

OUT. The shoes are twee, but the blouse is provocative. Choose one. Hint: you’re 17, so choose twee.

    • BayTampaBay

OUT! but keep the skirt or give it to me.

    • Capt. Renault

Out. When I can feel my narcolepsy coming on…

    • KateMaryC

    • LilyVanessi

Can’t disagree with the others. This is an OUT.

    • Missy

OUT. Her head looks good and I even like her hair like that…but the rest of the outfit simply does not GO.

    • lalahartma

      IN, it’s fine.

    • lizajane1776

Lower case in. I like everything but those twee shoes. I was looking for something sporty. (But I hate bows on anything, so take that with a grain of salt.)

    • elleg929

OUT – that shirt is so ugly

    • Anna

Out, for having to spend more time than I care to looking at her chest area and trying to figure out if she’s wearing a bra (verdict: I still don’t really know).

      • marlie

I think she is, but I’m still not on board with that shirt.

        • Anna

I think she is too, but I creeped myself out while I was looking.

    • SCK1980

I can’t get past that brassy at home hair color.

    • PinkyK

Out! It’s all a little laundry day and this was all she had left in her closet.

    • Lorelei_D

Looks like I’m a lonely IN! Light blues are good on blondes, age appropriate (the little bows on the shoes would be wrong on anyone old enough to vote), not slutty or weird.

      • Jessi03

I think it’s vaguely cute, too. Also, I’m loving her hair color in this lighting.

      • CT14

See-through top is not age appropriate.

      • your face

I’m an in too. I like this much more than the similar Dakota Fanning look just posted.

    • hughman

National Honor Roll Semi-Finalist, Class of ’77.

    • SewingSiren

The blouse is beautiful on her. See though lace done tastefully. The skirt is ho-hum, but I don’t hate it. Better to go slightly dull on bottom than tacky. So mission accomplished.

    • Myra Amler

Out. She is so young and the outfit looks like it belongs on someone older.

    • Karen Belgrad

Any outfit that gives the illusion on air brushed nipples is OUT!!!
(The fact that we went from Bitter Kittens to Vicious Kittens in your directive is also an indicative of how the vote would lean…)

    • appliquer

Out – the blues don’t work and the shoes are too small.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

      OUT, buh bye.

    • Wink

Out. But awesome job bedazzling that vintage skirt!

    • Kent Roby

I agree with #1-3, will add #4: it’s scary to see anything approaching see-through on anyone so young. OUT.

    • Ashley Ellen Wilson

in. i’m loving her hair color and how relaxed and comfortable she looks.

    • Sarah

Nothing goes with anything else – shoes, skirt, blouse: nay. So, out – but I do think the silhouette would be good on her if the color scheme was totally different, and the blouse wasn’t lace.

    • Michele M.

In! I’m a sucker for this kind of cutesy look.

    • MarissaLG

At first glance I thought it was fine, but the more I look at it the more I dislike it. For someone who is given clothes and who has a team of stylists, this gets an OUT. Cute shoes though.

    • Kate Andrews

UGH. Baby-blue lace? Never ever ever. Even Taylor Swift gives that blouse a veto.

    • Beto

Not inspiring. Love her smile though. And please, can someone teach her how to stand?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

A resounding NO to the lace shirt. The uncles are correct, the blues do not match.

    • MilaXX

OUT! Ugly and mismatched will never be chic in my book. That top needs to be replaced and what is wrong with her hair? Bad extensions or what?

    • DeniseSchipani

Off topic for fashion commentary, but why is she signing copies of a book she didn’t write? Starring in the movie does not equal authorship. I’m pretty sure. Signed, offended author.

      Also: Out.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

Maybe she’s signing the terrible movie-tie-in book covers and related chotchkies?
        Also agree: Out!

    • Jangle57

OUT I find the fact that the blouse is opened down to there tacky, the whole outfit boring and the shoes do nothing to elevate it; if anything they bring it down further…..

    • Judy_J

Did she get dressed in the dark? OUT.

    • Dino Bonačić

in… you’re all to judgy and it’s not even the end of the week.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

Pretty judgy to declare a couple hundred people “to” judgy.

        • Dino Bonačić

oh pardonnez-moi, it was a typing mishap – WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN.

And my top comment was sarcastic. Is that in your correct vocabulary? 😛

          • LesYeuxHiboux

So you are the only one who can joke?

            • Dino Bonačić

nothing better than mid-week double sarcasm situation!

    • SophieCollier

IN! She looks sweet and young and fresh and perfectly appropriate for a signing. I love it all!

    • elemspbee

IN. s’cute, season and age apropo. ez-brz.

    • CT14

She’s still not old enough for see-through shirts. YUCK.

Tacky for all the reasons listed above.

    • annla

It’s sort of cute if seen IRL. On red carpet… out.

    • Alicia

OUT – the shirt ruins it. And let’s fire whoever made the poster behind her and let it get all those airbubbles.

    • Whever

Out, on the basis of the clashing blues. I can see where she’s going with the lace top, but wouldn’t it be lovely in a rich plum tone to accentuate the slate blue of the skirt? It would even bring out the yellow of her pendant.

    • Vegas Girl

IN, I think she is adorable. But I may be biased by my feelings for the book this movie was based on.

    • Mothra

Is her hand stuck to her hip?

    • crash1212

OUT. If only for those hiddy shoes that Louboutin should feel ashamed for designing since they don’t seem to fit any of the feet I’ve seen them on. Also, those blues don’t go together, but that is a cute skirt.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Reporting for duty. I think Elle Fanning rejected this look as too washed out and dull. You’re never fully dressed when you look smug, Chloe. Why does she keep getting cast in these emotionally sensitive, delicate roles? She’s much more suited to Hit Girl-types. OUT.

    • Barbara Affolter

I’m going to pretend that some wires got crossed and she ended up in Miami for the event and her baggage did not. Her assistant, who has a form of color blindness that I’m not entirely sure even exists, got sent to Nordstrom with an Amex and a deadline.

    • Lori

Out. The blues don’t match and neither do the styles of the top and the skirt. The skirt would be cute with a different top and not sitting so high, but the top is just bad. I also don’t like the shoes.

    • FrigidDiva

OUT, for the simple fact that I had to look at her chest area way too long to determine if a bra was employed or not and that just skeeves me out when it involves someone under the age of 18. For shame!

    • Kara Keenan

I was going to applaud someone for correctly tone matching her bra to her skin. That’s the best thing about this outfit.

    • Gatto Nero

I concur. Out. That lacy shirt and those awful shoes are mismatched to the skirt (and bad on their own).

    • Danielle Colman

The plunging neckline really works on her; she’s shorter in the neck and broader in the shoulders than a lot of mini-stars, and she defaults to looks that shorten her neck even more. This creates a nice line.

On the flip side, those blues are awful together. This would look cute with black skinny pants. Her hair looks lovely, though. Er…IT? OUN?

    • KendraMR

It’s IN, but barely. J’adore the skirt, but not with a see-through lace blouse on a minor (or anyone really).

    • Grumpy Girl

Out. Her makeup looks nice. The skirt is appealing. The silhouette is nice. But that shirt is horrible: my skin sympathy itches for the lace, and my eyes itch at the mismatchiness of the blues. And the see-throughness is just wrong, no matter the age. I’d be offended if I saw that in my B&N during the day on someone 10 years older, too. The shoes are just unappealing.

The worst part: it could have been nice. The idea of that blue should have been a winner, and it all went off the rails.

    • texashistorian

IN for me. I am aware that I might not have much taste, but hey, someone has to make others’ eyes roll.

    • another_laura

Oh GAWD, it’s out. Hate the entire look. The clashing hair, skin and lip tones, the ugly and mismatched blues, and a sheer lace blouse on a very young woman. Absolutely nothing about this is working.

    • maretha2

OUT. I hate those shoes — I’ve seen at least 3 different actresses wear them on the RC (and Sarah Paulson wore them in 2 different colors) and they always look horribly painful. The side of poor Chloe’s foot looks like it’s screaming. Hate the sheer lace top.

      • Yoshio

Thank you for mentioning those horrendous shoes!

    • conniemd

Out. Blues don’t go together and shoes are too precious. Plus I kept staring at the sheer lace trying to see if she had a strapless bra, just because I’m a mom and she’s still a teenager – right? If not, she looks like one.

    • Sherilyne Cox

Fits pretty well, though. Would look better behind a podium.

    • snarkykitten

      • FibonacciSequins

        Hipsters being ironic.

    • jkatkins

Not a fan. OUT. And does the skirt seem uneven or is it just the way she’s standing?

    • Danielle

OUT, I like the skirt with something more plain on top.

    • sarcasmfont

Out. The lace shirt is a no – she’s too young for that look, even if it’s a soft blue, and it’s not appropriate for a book event. Skirt and shoes are cute though.

    • MarieLD

Out. But can I add that I’m glad she’s a brunette in the movie. I liked the book.

    • siriuslover

I think it’s a total IN. She looks happy, she also looks really hot. Maybe it’s my inner (or outer) lack of style, but I love the sexiness of that blouse and the way her boobs fit in it. Yeah, the colors don’t seem to go together, but it still works in my book.

    • FibonacciSequins

I like the blouse as well as the skirt, but they don’t go together. I’m giving her an OUT based on those shoes. I don’t know why everyone’s wearing them, they look exceptionally painful.

      • Kitten Mittons

Was it Sarah Paulson? They have both worn them at least twice, I think. Which in itself should lead to a rethink.

I like both pieces as well, but for different outfits. OUT.

    • Kbear

Everything but the skirt is OUT – but unfortunately the skirt isn’t IN enough to compensate for that nastly tablecloth in the form of a shirt. It’s so very “slutty grandma”.

    • Lexie

I like that silhouette on her, and the hair/make up looks great, but the sheer lace and white shoes ruin it for me. Out :(

    • Shawn EH

In! Normcore is a new thing for her!

    • quiltrx

lower-case out. I’m not wild about her hair color, but the style looks pretty good. The skirt is very cool, but the blouse goes a little ‘truck stop waitress’ night out’ for me. The shoes are cute but not the thing for this outfit.
The out is mostly lower-case because she seems to be having a blast.

    • KT

Nope! Hiddy. Light blue looks good on her though.

    • paintedfish

does anyone else find it odd that the actor is signing the book? the book that was not written by her?

    • tpalgal

      Oh, sweetie. Out.

    • somebody blonde

Out. I love the skirt, can get on board with the shoes… and sincerely hope that we can burn that shirt.

    • TwiddlyStun

The blouse is kinda bad but not rage-y bad, until you consider she’s at a bookstore during the day. I think a little under-eye concealer would have made her face fresher too. I wish her hair were darker – she looks quite different in the movie trailer with darker hair. Very pretty.

    • Janet B

Amazing how boring this is on her.

Those shoes look 1/2″ too high for her comfort.

    • ChiKat67

Love the skirt, her feet clearly HATE those shoes ( I’m in pain just looking at her in them) and the top needs to be burned, so out!

    • StrandedFashionista

    • Imasewsure

It’s IN but just barely because it’s all so sexy secretary dull… still her hair is cute for a change and I don’t hate any of it (well maybe I hate the shoes but oh well)

    • MandyM

Out! The lace top is trashy and matronly at the same time. The skirt might be cute but I can’t imagine what to put with it. Who is dressing her lately? They should pack their knives and go.

    • Chelsea Claire Drucker

I just… don’t like that shirt at all.

    • demidaemon

It’s ugly and making me twitchy. Her hair looks nice. Still an OUT.

    • kimmeister

OUT. Not a flattering skirt shape for her, and her feet are too wide for those shoes.

    • trisker

IN. She’s cute and SEVENTEEN! Anybody older would look trashy or crazy.

    • frannyprof

OUT. Sally Draper drag that should be worn only by Sally D. herself.

    • Peeve

Out. For some reason, from the shoes to the blouse, it all just looks cheap to me.

    • mickiemonkey

OUT. She needs an intervention. I fear she is thinking: “What would Taylor (Swift) do?”

    • marlie

OUT. That top is too sheer for a 16-year-old. The skirt could have been cute paired with something else. And her hair and makeup look cute.

    • ReadBarbara

She’s signing books? What? She’s in the movie, she didn’t write the book. (As a writer, I am way too put off by this to notice and/or comment on the clothing.)

      • Trickytrisha

It’s hideously inappropriate, IMO. What author would allow this if they had the power to stop it? Must be the publisher’s decision, but geez… what a slap in the face to the writing community.

        • ReadBarbara

Appreciate the additional intell. I guess ultimately, if it sells more books it’s good for the writer. But it still seems a bit off to me.

    • TerryMarie

OUT. The blouse is ugly and too tight.

    • call_me_schmeg

That top is making me angry. OUT.

    • Jeremy Thomas Porta

      I like her hair.

    • SoAnnaPropriate

In, even though I don’t like lace and I want to button one more button on that blouse for her. I like the fit and proportion, and even the colors.

    • livesarah

I don’t know, she looks so teenaged in it you know she definitely put it together herself. I don’t like it so much but it doesn’t actually bug me for once, so I’m going to be generous and give her an IN. I know everyone will vote the other way and all will be right in the end!

    • NurseEllen

Well, it’s not very imaginative, and I agree with all the BKs who are finger-wagging about the see-through blouse, and those “tap dancer rehearsal” shoes don’t do a thing for the ensemble. I guess I would characterize this as just plain BLAH. But then again, it’s a book signing at a Barnes and Noble, and there are hundreds of screaming fangirls to be appeased, so maybe it’s OK to be blah because they’ll all love you for being there anyway.

In conclusion: I can’t work up enough of an opinion to vote in OR out. I abstain.

    • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

      It all looks cheap.

    • Jenna Marie

Out. Too bad too, because I love the skirt.

    • Columbinia

God, no. Tarty sheer blouse worn with a skirt from the children’s department. Out.

    • lilibetp

Good grief! Are those the only shoes ladystars are allowed to wear this summer? I think I’ve seen them of five different women!

    • JeanDNelson

I just <- got paid $7500 parttime working online with a lap-top by Google.I am making a good salary from h.ome $5500-$7000/weekLast Monday got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. • Alyssa

Out. She is too young for see-through shirts, and the skirt is the only cute thing she’s wearing.

    • M. H. Leader

I have an off-the-beaten-path comment. WHY THE HELL IS SHE SIGNING COPIES OF THE FRIGGIN’ BOOK??? As a writer, I’m OUTRAGED that an actress takes it upon herself to sign copies of a book she DID NOT WRITE. Sorry. I’m getting freaked out by this. But the ONLY person who rightfully should be signing books is the author, Gail Foreman. NOT a twinky-actress.

For that reason alone, if no other, she’s OUT PERMANENTLY in my book.

TLo–how would you guys feel about someone, say someone mentioned in your book, to go to a bookstore and autograph it? I bet you’d be screaming bloody murder.

      • Tom and Lorenzo

We admit, the thought initially had us bristling, but it’s a tough market out there. We imagine the book’s author doesn’t mind so much if it moves copies and works as a promotional tool. The author credit hasn’t changed, nor, we assume, have the royalties arrangements. And the author was present at this signing. You’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do to move those books.

    • kirsten Walther

      IN. Cute.

    • anonylind

I know she’s in the movie, but why is *she* signing copies of the book? At the very least, they should have the author there with her. Geez.

      • anonylind

Oh, and OUT on the outfit.

    • Cathy S

I agree with point 2. It’s the first thing I thought. So it’s OUT. And she should pair that skirt with something better next time.

    • Kathie

OUT – except the skirt. The shoes need to go up a size to give her toes a rest.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out. If it looks like something you’d see on staff at Merlotte’s, it’s not in.

    • LibKat

Out for the unsightly color mismatch. The epitome of take a selfie before you leave the house.

    • MissFern

Its cute, she’s in Miami, it’s hot as shit here, wearing a see through shirt gets a pass.

    • Rebekah B

I’m one of the few who like lace, I think, but yeah no. OUT.

    • Nicole

That’s a little girl cut on the shirt but it’s old lady lace. The heels are adult but the bow is twee. So basically, she looks 15 and the age appropriateness of her clothes averages out to 15, but everything but the skirt is totally off.

    • unbornfawn

OUT. Because of everything TLo said and a see through lace blouse.

    • Melanie

out. that hair & the color of the blouse make her look so washed out!

    • AlisonHendryx

OUT that top is disgusting, especially on a teenager.

    • amaranth16

Out because of the Barbie Boobs. I get what you were going for there, Chloe, and… no.

    • LeelaST

OUT. Cute skirt, horribly, cheap-looking, clashy blouse. I hope she’s the last to wear these twee bow-adorned shoes.

    • Filmjen

I really HATE THIS OUTFIT! Rarely do I feel so emotional about such things, but out way out!

    • Avonell

OUT. So mismatched but such a cute skirt and I actually like those shoes…

    • Slanted & Enchanted

OUT because the top is atrocious.

    • Trishington

      Hellz no.

      In – she looks adorable

Out. I think if she would have worn a different top, I would be OK with this. It’s just for a Barnes & Noble signing. But top is ug-lee and I absolutely agree, those shades of blue have nothing to do with one another.

Am I the only one who thinks this is cute as hell? The two types of blue go well together and the style if adorable.

    • Deborah Lipp

Cute. Not awesome, but cute and not bizarre, which is a step up for her. IN.
