Garcelle Beauvais in Diane von Furstenberg at “The Expendables 3” Premiere

Posted on August 13, 2014

Y’know, if one simply must follow the B&W red carpet trend for summer ’14, then this is probably one of the best ways to go about it.

It feels cool and simple and bold all at the same time. And we love all the silver in the accessories. A lot of people would have gone for pops of color, but nothing works better with B&W than silver.

Complaints (because that’s our job): The bag is practically invisible and the silvers all tend to compete with each other. A little more unity between bracelet, earring and shoe (without the need to look matchy, of course). Also: her hair and face seem a little underdone for the look. Is that just us? We keep thinking a sloppy up ‘do and a stronger lip would work wonders.

Yes, Yes on your ideas for her hair and lip color. I am so happy now to know what to wear with MY B/W outfits: silver!

  • DuBey2

Also, I think that style/fit of dress is really meant for someone with toothpick arms.

      • DuBey2

It seems very unflattering to normal-sized arms.

        • Salasalu

  • Rhonda Shore

    Yes to a stronger lip.

  • Kathy

Sharp look. I agree about the silvers and the bag, but I’m okay with her hair and makeup. The look is casual chic.

  • MilaXX

I wish she had worn the purple instead. Hair is terrible, face is okay. I wish her shoes were the same blackish silver as her cuff is. It’s an okay look but could be better.

    • demidaemon

Same here. Such a missed opportunity.

  • PinkyK

    That dress is puzzling!

  • smh4748

    Rorschach chic. :)

I covet it in the royal blue though.

All I see is Autism Awareness. :-/

  • Nikko Viquiera

I love this! She looks so fresh and pretty :)

  • Sara Brams-Miller

She sorta looks like a caricature of herself . . . does anyone else feel this way?

    • KendraMR

Yep. I said to myself, “What’s wrong with her face? Fillers?”.

This would be the perfect Baby Bump Rumor dress to keep the Paps guessing. You can barely tell where any of it begins and ends.

  • marlie

A silver clutch might have been better in terms of not blending in with the dress. And this is another cute non-body con dress that’s mostly working. I like.

  • MightyMarshal

Get this woman and Queen Latifah in a movie together ASAP.

  • papillon

I think it’s really cute, although possibly a teeeeeeensy bit young for her. Her make up does look a bit underdone and I’m typically a big fan of the fairly natural look. The dress is adorable though. I love it.

  • SewingSiren

Everything is good except the pointy stiletto shoes, I like the color alright. I wish stylist would take a page from the 60’s handbook and not wear this short dresses with the spindle heel and pointy toe, it just doesn’t look right to me.

  • Jennifer Bober

I agree that an updo would have worked better with that neckline. Definitely a bolder lip. I love the graphic quality of the dress and the boldness it creates.

  • Bill Craven

Would saying that she solves the B&W puzzle be too on-the-nose? Probably, but I’ll do it anyway. I think everything works for me except the bracelet.

  • kmk05

Those cheekbones are to DIE for. I quite like the hair and makeup with the rigidity of the dress, and the pointy shoes are a perfect accent. I could do with other accessories, though.

  • MoHub

Trust DVF to do colorblocking that’s both interesting and respects the shape of the wearer’s body!

    • Constant Reader

She really knows how to make dresses that flatter, doesn’t she?

  • prettyinmink

I love this outfit in the royal blue. I think this is actually a good look for her. But you know how when you see someone in something so horrible it gets seared into your memory? Every time I look at her all I see is that horrible outfit from April with the gladiator sandals.

  • Leah Elzinga

I’d worry that a “sloppy updo” could bring this into Fembot territory. Or, cheekily Bardot-esque. Or are those kind of the same thing?

  • another_laura

Love the dress in the color. In B/W, the markings are a little Elsie the dairy cow.

    • MoHub

Elsie was a brown cow, not a Holstein.

  • Wink

Her face actually looks BETTER in the close-up, and that rarely happens.

  • sherrietee

I keep hearing Yul Brenner saying “it’s a puzzlement.”

    • MoHub

      • sherrietee

I know this, but autocorrect apparently doesn’t.

        • MoHub

Which is why I’ve disabled AutoCorrect.

  • Mr. J.

Really nice. AND she looks like she’s having fun.

  • Imasewsure

Cute dress… ugly useless clutch… agreed on the hair and makeup. Also would have loved a more interesting funky shoe in the same tone. Still she’s gorgeous and this is different at least

  • kimmeister

Her eyebrows are too thin, and that’s throwing off the appearance of her eyes.

  • Jacob Bowen

In the first photo the bag blends in so much that it obscures the shape of the dress. If she had held the bag in her other hand it would be fine.

  • lamamu

A stronger lip, yes. Additionally, her eyebrows could be drawn in just a smidge more heavily. It would give a bit more drama to her beautiful face.

  • Jahna Peloquin

Also, a stronger brow. What’s with the pencil-thin ’90s brows??

  • Sanglots longs

If she wanted to, she could repurpose this dress next April for Autism Awareness Month.

  • Little_Olive

Is that…black(ish) lipliner? No. Please tell me it’s not back -as most things 90’s are. Please.

  • Constant Reader

She looks like a million bucks. Yes, I’d prefer a little more lip color and a clutch that didn’t disappear, but those are minor quibbles. Overall, she’s rocking the B&W trend.

  • gingerella

That stick-straight drowned Ophelia hair just does not work after a certain age.

  • conniemd

Black and silver together are underappreciated because gold is more “expensive.” But I’ve found that silver jewelry looks amazing with a black and white outfit. Style isn’t all about how much you spend, but how it looks in the end.

  • alyce1213

I think she looks fabulous, minus the stick hair. The dress and shoes are wonderful together.

  • FibonacciSequins

Cute, simple, graphic. A gunmetal shade would have worked better for the shoes. Agree on the hair and lip color. Overall she looks really good.

  • demidaemon

I’m kind of surprised and saddened that she didn’t choose the original purple, considering the way it would have popped against her skin. Damn those trends.

What a GREAT dress! She and I are close in age and I canNOT believe how great she looks. Go ahead, look up her birth date; you’ll faint.

    • jess

I sincerely was pegging her for a good 15 to 18 years younger than she is. Holy crap, is she keeping a portrait in her attic???

  • livesarah

I can give the hair and makeup a pass, but the bag needs to go. Love the dress.

  • prisma

Unity but not matchy. I will be borrowing that phrase.

  • SoAnnaPropriate

Love this dress that I will never get to wear! Any color combo would do, I’m not picky.

  • SistaT

I think she looks perfect. Also, she’s stunningly beautiful.

  • Coco Chanel

I loved it on the model but on her… Can I say cow?

  • Ali2044

This dress makes her look huge and she’s not at all. It doesn’t work for me at all.
