Why Lady Mary. What a pleasant surprise.

We found ourselves wishing she’d win just so she could get up and give a speech in that dress. When it came time to decide the roster for today and we both chose this dress, we tentatively asked each other, “You like it, right?” We wonder if we’re alone on this. We’ll let you have the final say, but we’ll just put it out there that we love the slightly unusual colors and shape. It’s a dress that inspires double takes. And since she’s got such classic, elegant good looks, the juxtaposition with the slightly edgy gown is appealing. Love all the jewelry too.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN!  I am HERE for Lady Mary’s brand of edgy/romantic!

OUT! Reminds me of that time I had to strip wallpaper.

In other judgmental news, all y’all pretty much hated Taylor Swift’s lame attempt at Grunge Chic and voted it OUT.

    I just don’t love… it looks like she’s wrapped in a flag.

    • Yeah, I kept wondering whose flag that is. Her head looks nice, though.

    • Hugo’sBoss

EXACTLY what I was going to say! She looks like she’s in a subdued costume in the Parade of Nations at the Miss Universe Pageant.

      • Ramon Figueroa

        She looks like a superheroine.

        • judybrowni

          I disagree: Folded napkins dress.

    • LAWD. Should’ve read the comments first. lolol. I said pretty much the same thing.

    • Anna

I thought flag as well. Specifically the person who leads the flag bearers in the opening ceremonies at the Olympics.

      • Karen Belgrad

I was thinking high school flag corp 🙂

      • Fitzperry

Flag bearer at the Olympics was precisely my initial reaction. There’s an ancient Grecian effect here. I love it though. She looks gorgeous.

    • Raspberry2012

Yes, I think you nailed what’s bothering me about it. It fits her, it’s a lovely shape, she looks good. But I’m just not in love with the whole look.

    • random_poster

This would be improved and much less flag-like if there wasn’t such a mix of colors.

      • aurumgirl

And if the fabric didn’t look so stiff and unforgiving.

        • Mousentrude

Yes, it’s this that ruins it for me. I might even forgive the unnecessary triangle of belly flesh if the fabric were a bit more drapey. As it is, it’s out. Such a shame.

    • Dino Bonačić

INININ! It’s so fresh and edgy yet very retro and reminiscing of Cristobal Balenciaga’s work… J’ADORE!

      • FridaStaire

        But…it’s Lupita’s dress, not Lady Mary’s. Just imagine….

    • Therese Bohn

I thought flag too! A happy pastel country? She looks okay though.

  • BayTampaBay

Out! The bodice is too big or her boobs are too small; take your pick.

If you get to wear a dress like this to the Emmy Awards and you are nominated for said Emmy , would you not have the bodice perfectly tailored no matter what the cost even if you had to buy the dress?

    • Kristi Mitchell

Agreed. Would have been an In for me, but the top looks to big on her. The bottom portion of the top is wrinkled (as is the bottom half of the dress but that’s another point), and the sides look too big and the top of the dress is bunched around her neck (particularly noticeable in last two photos).

  • Jaeda Laurez

IN. I have some minor quibbles about the fit of the top, but it’s a really interesting choice in a sea of black, and red, and white.

    • What Jaeda said. I don’t love the dress but she makes it sing and it suits her perfectly. IN.

    • Trent

100% agree. I think it’s quietly dramatic, if that makes sense. And I love the colors. IN.

    • alaskahyoung

Yes! It’s interesting enough and made my eyes mostly happy. In. You go and show them, Lady Mary.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Yup. LOVED it. On someone else, it might not have worked. On her, it was perfect.

  • LJCdoc

    In! Interesting and different!

  • veleri

    it’s a yes.
light and elegant, it’s a whisper of joy.

    • Carly Clement

Agreed IN! She makes it look effortless! I also love her styling choices, the pearl ring especially! Love it!

  • JasmineAM

I don’t think she can pull this off. Send it to someone edgier.

    • FancyPhilly

I totally agree. Her fragility (she always seems as if she could be snapped in two) doesn’t work with edgy. I love the dress, but it needs some attitude.

  • halleygee

That dart on the blue panel on the bodice is so distracting… it’s an OUT for me bc of that and it looks like a paper craft project.

  • imperfectlaura

I’m really on the fence about this one. I would really like it if it didn’t have that cut-out, but as it is, it’s a closer call. I’m gonna go with IN because it’s an interesting dress, and I really like the details of it that make it interesting. The bottom of the dress is gorgeous and memorable.

    • Rhonda Shore

I’m with you, barely in…and i really don’t get how she ended up on Vanity Fair’s best dressed list. When she gets it right, she does look utterly fabulous, but it seems like she’s about the stylists, not her own “style.”

  • RussellH88

I like it enough to say it’s an IN, but I think the contrast would look better on someone who had a skin tone that could contrast more against that white fabric.

    • Introspective

yes! it kinda feels off white or soft pink on my monitor. but either way, too much like her skin tone is the point. that’s one of the things that turns me off about it even though other aspects of the dress are quite lovely…

    • DuBey2

Yes, Someone like the model. On Lady Mary, I couldn’t even tell there was a cutout – it just looked bland & boring in that rib area. Otherwise I love the dress.

    • decormaven

Also would help if dress were photographed against a different color background.

  • Sarah

IN IN IN she looks like sailing on a summer day and I LOVE IT.

    • Kitten Mittons

Oh, I like this reasoning. It’s an IN for me as well, but now I have a better reason for it.
It does feel summery, which is a difficult trick with formal wear.

      • Sarah

True that. I guess the “flag” some people are getting is reading “sail” to me, but in a good way.

        • Kitten Mittons

And that profile shot is everything. Love the earrings/cuff/whatever it is.

          • Anplica Fiore

Me too – she has just the right styling for this look. LOVE IT! IN all the way for me..

    • Coleen

And with that, my minor “in” just went to a shout of “IN!”

    • J.W.

      I’m with this crowd.

    • decormaven

Going with “in” for the reason you mention.

  • Funkykatt

    Home Ec class crap

  • TAGinMO

Big IN for me. Interesting, striking, and summery.

  • Social Suzi Designs

IN! I get that its a little different, but I just can’t stop looking at it. Its so lovely!

  • Emily Dagger

In, but with minor reservations — I LOVE the top half and the back part of the skirt (the tail?). The main bit of the skirt looks stiff, though, and there’s something about the way the waistband sits against the draped/cut away part of the bodice that isn’t working for me.

I love her head unreservedly, though. Pulling off that hair is my new life goal.

    • sienna elm

You put it much better than I could. I love the top and how it flows into the back of the skirt. It reminds me of repurposed funky kitchen curtains, but I love it anyway. The waistband bothers me like crazy, but it’s still an “in”.

    • VCR1

I completely agree with you. It’s an In. Despite the quibbles she looks beautiful!

  • Bridget Smith

Looove. Colors are great on her, shape is elegant but unusual. Love the jewelry, too: a slightly funky take on the classics.

  • Lex

I hate hate hate the peekaboo belly cutout. Other than that, i think the colors are unexpected and the dress is really cool and unique. It borders on “parachute” but i think it is ultimately a success. Love that she isn’t wearing red or black like everyone else

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

IN! It looks like something a Crawley sister would wear to a gala in 2014. Fresh, chic, and modern, while remaining elegant. And it’s seasonally appropriate too!

    • teensmom99

  • CaseyinNY

In, I think. I love the colors and the shape as well, I just think the main body of the skirt looks like it was made with wrapping paper. Also, I hate the shoes, but you can barely see them, so IN.

  • Christine Hart

I think the material was just too wrinkly, but I liked the concept.

  • Michelle, not Shelly

In. The colors are gorgeous, and I like that the dress is unexpected but still flattering.

  • Heather Innis

Out. The skirt looks like the paper that covers the table in the doctors office.

  • SugarSnap108

Ugh, I want to love this. But the dress looks too much like Pete the Parachute from my kindergarten gym class. A half-hearted Out.

  • Lilah

I’d like it better if it fit better in the boobs. Also, I’m not in love with the colors particularly since she is so fair.

  • I love it! Very fresh and youthful, which is not always the case with Lady Mary. Well done I say!

  • jeneria

Why does she so often wear colors that match her skin tone? I feel like the little torso cut out is useless because the fabric is the same color as her skin.

    • kimmeister

OUT for this exact reason, plus her hair looks wiggly.

  • In! Love love love!

  • Lily

IN. Absolutely. It suits her aesthetic so well, the stark, almost plain mixed with the bright and unexpected. I absolutely loved it.

  • Ann

Looks like it could have been from that Project Runway challenge where they had to make a dress out of a parachute.

    • MoHub

      Parachute material drapes better.

  • MoHub

I had a flashback to Mila’s “design your own fabric” entry when she was on PR. Like Mila’s garment, this is just stiff and looks resistant to fluid movement. The same shape and colors in a more fluid fabric and I might even call it a WERQ.

  • annrr

It is a near miss for me. Had then bust been fit perfectly and change the hair. From the front it looks Amish minus the prayer cap.

  • Daisy Walker

I want to like it, but upon closer reflection, it looks like she ran through a clothesline that is now hanging around her neck.

  • SarahVN

    IN. I think it’s delightful.

  • granite5

Oh, SO IN. It’s so unusual but lovely.

  • StarburstLady

Lovely. She looks statuesque, like some kind of inspirational emblem. That sounds kinda weird, but really, I like it. IN.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. However, love the hair, makeup and jewelry.

  • Capt. Renault

IN. Fresh and interesting. Very light and airy for full-length formalwear.

Loved yesterday, love it today! Fresh colors, interesting shape, she looks cool & elegant.

  • Judy_S

Super-In, for the reasons cited by T and Lo.

  • kalisa

I like it. I wish the waist was just a scoch lower.

  • I don’t like it. Looks like a flag. OUT.

  • Sophie

It does look a bit like peeling wallpaper, but she looks so fantastic I have to vote her IN. Great colours, and I especially like the top part on her. Great hair.

  • IN, I love it, elegant and unexpected!

  • IN. It looks like she’s wearing many napkins, but in a good way. That is an accomplishment.

  • luludexter

Absolutely IN for me – I love it. It’s interesting and the colors are different, and the subtle assymetry surprising. I think it looks better on her than the model, not as stiff. The view from the side, with the movement of the lines, is equally appealing and pretty.

  • vitaminC

    Comforter coture. OUT.

  • Carla_Charlton

This looked a lot better in moving photographs. IN

  • antheapena

I like it, unusual yet elegant but I think the bodice is too big on her. I still say IN

  • Mothra

Out. The fit doesn’t look right.

  • Janet B

    Want to love.
The bodice doesn’t fit well, plus it has a silly cutout. I’m not sold on the jewelry choices either.

  • Kathy_Marlow

I wish it was a bit more fitted, but I do love it.

  • Beardslee

I can’t get past that 19th C center part and droopy side hair. Out.

    • ryenerman

The Jane Eyer-do is also killing me

  • Calinda_L

I adore this. Adore, adore, adore.

  • RescueMe23

Dear Lord I thought this was horrible. I’d rather stare at Julianna Marguilies” dress longer than this one. I agree w/some commenters – flags of the world flapping.

  • Ellen R.

    IN – I love it.

  • ashtangajunkie

IN. J’adore – the colours, the interesting shape, her elegant styling. LOVE.

  • belfebe

OUT. It´s a great dress and it would have looked great on her if it was properly tailored. It seems to me that they tried to tame the cutout and the proportion is a little off. It looks good on her, but not spectacular. There is a difference. I am giving an out because what it could have been.

  • Alex Palombo

In! Fun and different for her.

  • papillon

OUT. I like the colours but the shape just reminds me of a napkin. I also wish she had done something different with her hair. I like her ring though.

  • unpious

IN. SO VERY IN. It’s lovely and striking and just unusual enough to make me stop and look at it for awhile, as opposed to most award show looks that I just scroll through in a sea of boring beige. Also, her head looks great.

  • JimMcC

IN. It looks a little stiff, and I wish the color wasn’t QUITE so close to her skin tone, but still…it’s lovely and interesting.

  • Noah

Out. That fabric looks cheap as fuck.

  • flamingoNW

In. I see what ppl are saying about fit issues but I like it anyways. Not wild about her hair though

  • Abbey Rogue

Very much IN. She is the victim of an unfortunate alteration. I’m guessing that she has a bigger bust than the model, judging from her broken seamlines on the princess line of the bust. Stopping a dart like that gives some abrupt seamlines and puckering that even the most diligent pressing can’t alleviate.

BUT, this dress is so fresh, clean, and a dramatic departure from all of the sequins and beads and lace and such we saw last night, that I’m going to have to give her an attagirl.

  • SewingSiren

    Absolutely love everything.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

I love it. Definitely In. BUT, the top fits her weird . . . amirite?

    • Lori

You are right. The fit is off.

    • yethica

You are right. And that’s not because I’m your sister (no really).

  • In. Full stop. LOVE THIS.

  • charlotte

OUT. I just don’t like napkin dresses. A whole dress in that shade of blue would have been spectactular.

  • Introspective

im of 2 minds. (hence my upvotes on both positive and negative comments!!)

i love the rather striking nature of it. there’s something pretty but very different about it. the color combo of the accent colors is one of my faves.

yet there’s the wrinkliness, the soft pink that she always defaults to as the main color (yawn) and the too big bodice which makes the girls look deflated.

so in with a small i? or out with a small o? im still undecided!! help fellow bks!

  • Glam Dixie

It’s not really doing much for me, but I don’t find there’s a lot that I dislike either so I’m going with a tepid IN.

  • Little_Olive

IN! I´ll forgive the wrinkles and the fact that there is something off with the belly-keyhokle, because I love this and she looks gorgeous.

  • ballerinawithagun

Out! With a couple of changes it could be an In! Hate the pale pink satin, I wish the whole dress would have been done in shades of blue and green. Then that waistband which makes it look like separates instead of a gown. Look at those horrible pleats coming from the waistband. Good idea, poorly executed.

  • jilly_d

I wish she didn’t have Sarah Paulsen hair, but overall thus is an IN for me. LOVE THAT RING

  • Gatto Nero

Absolutely IN. This is so fresh and unexpected for her, and the colors, silhouette, and proportions are working beautifully.
There’s a little puckering on the bodice (from alterations, I’m guessing), but it’s not enough to spoil the overall impact.

  • ojosazules

The top is bit wonky, but an overall In.

  • LilyVanessi

IN. She looks gorgeous and it’s different – in a good way.

  • Sunshine16

Unique & colorful, gotta give her the IN! However, I don’t love what that hair is doing on the sides from front view, pretty helmet-y

  • IN. Really like it, and I love that ring. It’s elegant while still having some interest, which I think is perfect for her.

  • Lori

In, although with major reservations. I really wish the fit was better and that she hadn’t gone with the pink. I’m giving it to her because I like the basic idea and because she does look beautiful.

  • Susan Collier

IN. Love it! It’s unusual in all the right ways. And the colors are great.

  • Djwilke

OUT: napkin dress (again), Virginia Woolf hair, boring make-up, boring jewelry, wrinkly, too big.

  • hmariec19

    I love it. IN.

  • IN although I would like it more without the waist cut-out. There’s something sort of sci-fi princess about it which I like and which makes me think Michelle should be offspring-of-Leia in the new Star Wars films.

  • AlisonS

While I think it looks more like fabric for a flag that a gown, I love the colors so much I need to give it an IN.

  • MerBearStare

In! I loved it the second I saw it last night.

  • Bad Idea Jeans

Compared to Lena Dunham, this is a WERQ. IN.

    • yethica

Ugh, Lena Dunham. I will be having nightmares about frilly pink toilet plunger covers for weeks.

  • Kate

Out. Looks too craft-project for my taste. She’s very beautiful, and I like the Grecian touches. But a gentle no.

  • blixtme

IN. I could wish it had been rendered in a softer-looking fabric, but it’s a great look on her.

  • In_Stitches

Though I loathe to give an out to something so different and bold, I have to. The visible seaming everywhere plus the hair are enough to kill it for me. OUT.

  • Tanya Wade

IN. Finally something different yet lovely. The most beautful blooming flower.

  • IN. Love the colors and the hair clip, and it’s nice to see a different designer on the red carpet.

  • Violentcello

I like it. Could have done without the belly window, but her skin is the same color as the white in the dress, so it’s unobtrusive.

  • Julie Chase

In! It’s unexpected and I love the colors.

  • NMMagpie

IN. I loved this the moment I saw it. I think it’s kind of funny that against her pale skin, you can miss that cutout at the waist.

  • VFinn

IN, for all the reasons our uncles cited! Plus, it’s pretty and made me smile — and it looks as if she feels pretty in it, too.

  • tallgirl1204

I appreciate that it is modern and yet true to her retro beauty. IN.

  • nannypoo

This is a huge IN. It’s gorgeous and she looks beautiful.

  • jen

    Love!! So unusual and elegant.

  • Courtney

IN. The colors really suit her, and I like that it’s just different enough to force you to really look at it.

  • ChelseaNH

I’m not entirely on board with the bit of belly-baring, but I love the colors on her and it is dramatic without being too weird. So in.

  • Super_Red

I love love love this! Loved it from the second I saw it, and the love has only grown. It’s dramatic and eye-catching, but tasteful and fun all at the same time. The colors are awesome, and she’s pulling it off. Definite In!!

  • JulieK

I give this an IN. It’s tricky but she’s working it and I love the unusual colors.

  • MartyBellerMask

IN. Eye catching, and I don’t love her hair but it works with this dress. LOVE the earrings.

  • higgledypiggledy

IN. Ever so slightly edgy, but pretty. It looks a little like a fashion design-school project; one that would get a good grade. I love the richness and substance of the fabrics – it looks stiff, but not in a bad way, if that makes any sense. Also, her manicure is perfectly on point.

  • IN. I have slight quibbles about choosing the pink over the runway white, but this is DOING THINGS for me.

  • Nicole S.

  • latina fey

IN! i think she looks so lovely.

  • M. H. Leader

Sorry. This is an OUT for me. I hate the dress.

  • Indigo54

OUT OUT OUT! And don’t ever comeback! From the side waist down, it looks like she’s wearing an apron over a poofy night gown.

  • KiP07

IN, but with some nits to pick. The top needs to be taken in about 1/2 an inch on all sides and in all the layers, and maybe about 1 inch off of the hem to allow for a more natural and less crispy drape of the skirt. I also noticed this to be a problem on the model too, so all stylists involved could have been a bit more attentive.

  • Jackie4g

In, in a big way. Interesting, eye catching and unusual dress. A resounding YES!

  • MaryMcClelland

Hmmm… I like it in theory, and I love that she’s chose more unusual colors, but the fit everywhere is off. And the wings make it look like a butterfly in repose. The true hero here is that Lady Mary FINALLY started figuring out that she can use blush and no longer is looking washed out and consumptive everywhere she goes. All that said, OUT.

  • GillianHolroyd

    OUT. Un drapeau.

    Like the hair though.

  • Barbara Affolter

I LOVE the idea of this and I LIKE it on her, but it’s not flawless. I don’t know if it’s just not a dress that was meant to be worn for any longer than a trip to the end of the catwalk or if it’s the way the bodice was altered, but the petals are not lying quite right, nor is the area where the strap attaches to the neckline. The shape and colors are fantastic on her, but the execution isn’t Emmy Ceremony worthy.

    Grudging IN.

  • kirsten Walther

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

In! It’s different, yet classic. It reminds me of the designs in the fashion show sequence of the original version of “The Women”.

  • marlie

IN. I *LOVE* this. I think the top could be fitted a little better, but overall this is beautiful and interesting. Also, a belly cutout that doesn’t bother me.

  • Lisalady161

I said ‘ew’ when I saw the thumbnails on CNN last light, and I’m still saying it. OUT.

  • Lexie

I wish the top was more fitted, but overall this is striking and venue appropriate. IN!

  • IN. I’m not 100% behind the dress but I’m 1,000% behind that flawless face. And I want those earrings!

  • Punkinsmom

It reminds me of the Buddhist prayer flags. That said, on the model, I really like it. On Lady Mary… not so much. The teeny tiny belly peep is wrong, Either all or nothing, please. And the way the skirt hangs on her isn’t as flattering. I’m going out, because while it made me look again, I disliked it more at the second glance.

  • Julie Ann

OUT. While I like the interesting shapes, she is too pale for it.

  • amanda siegelson

i seem to be in a minority, but i find this dress fugly as hell. so a big OUT for me.

  • MilaXX

IN! I think it’s pretty and the colors are working for her.

  • Alyssa

In. Don’t love it, but it’s not boring, and I just adore her.

ETA: Maybe my goodwill has something to do with the barrage of ugly from the MTV awards yesterday.

  • FibonacciSequins

The only thing I don’t love is the abdomen cutout. And it’s working on her. IN

  • FuhUgh

    In. It’s different – I like it.

  • lilibetp

    In for me.

  • Natalie

    IN! She looks amazing

  • Michael_Jones

In. I like it, although I think the skirt looks stiff. (But my God, that woman is so fair-skinned that I wasn’t even sure that was a midriff keyhole until I saw the photo of the dress on the model.)

  • CB

IN! My one qualm is that it’s a little wrinkly, but I guess that’s bound to happen with that fabric. Overall I love the edgy yet elegant vibe!

  • Bernadette

  • yethica

In. I basically love everything about this look. And is that some sort of gold pin in her hair? Nicely done, Miss Lady.

  • Sienamystic

I love this dress so much and it looks incredible on her. Stunning, the whole thing.

  • H2

I really want to like it, but it’s just somehow off. I really don’t like where the top and the skirt meet. It’s weird having the top tucked into the skirt.

  • Jenna Marie

    It’s so perfect. IN.

  • Grumpy Girl

IN, I love that the colors are summer. It’s interesting. and I LOVE the earrings and ring. I am a sucker for pearls, especially unusual settings.

  • Angel O’Leary

In! Easily my favorite look of the night.

  • H2

Looking at it again I think what makes me want to like it so much is her face. She looks like she feels beautiful and that makes any outfit better.

  • Dreamwr8tr

    Interesting, elegant look-at-me dress. IN.

  • MsKitty

The top half reminds me of handkerchiefs hanging on a clothesline and wrecks the silhouette of the skirt. OUT.

  • KayEmWhy

IN. I think it looks better on her than the model. Spectacular!

  • xay

One of the rare times where I didn’t like the dress in the thumbnail but loved the scrolldown. IN

  • Michele M.

I love the top, but am not in with the bottom wrinkly column around her legs. So… out.

  • Jangle57

I was on the fence about this one; on one hand I like the colors and the idea but the structuredness (if there is such a word) is a bit of a negative for me – in the end, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and make it an IN

  • empath

IN. The clean lines and crisp colours work for her. She is born to wear a column gown, and I love how the train flatters the column without looking pouffy or bunchy. Elegant in a crisp, yachting kind of way.

  • kt

Yuck, no. Super drab, bad color choice, bad shape and cut it out with the godawful hair. She is one of those stunning women who consistently look like a before picture. HOW?!

  • somebody blonde

In! It’s weird but it’s working for me!

  • mmebam

She is having a moment with random drapey bits on her skirts, apparently… however, I think she looks lovely here. #In

  • Megan Au

Fit is off in the bust, and the initial design so unusual I had to to a triple take to comprehend what was going on. But overall a great look, it’s an IN all the way for me.

  • beckytee

It looks a little too Olympics-Opening-Ceremonies to me. Like the silhouette, though.

  • KCF

    A def IN for me.

  • HeisenbergHattie

She’s such the lady. If this is a flag, as some have indicated, I salute it.

  • Samantha Klein

IN, although I don’t like her hair.

  • dmkava

In if the Emmys were held in June, otherwise–out

  • Angela_the_Librarian

In. Could have done without the ab window, but otherwise it’s a striking dress.

  • Marie

I love it–it was one of my favorites all night.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

OUT. She looks like an oil company logo.

  • teensmom99

IN. Almost a WERQ. I love how it calls back to early Lady Mary while also being contemporary with some Long Goodbye era LA.

  • Shoelover1512

    Out…can’t handle the belly window

  • ailujailuj

Very interesting and forward design—appreciate it. It just doesn’t fit her well.

  • It doesn’t seem to be fitted correctly. Better tailored, it would have been amazing, but as is it’s just meh.

  • StrandedFashionista

    I absolutely love this. IN.

  • Chattygal

Wish it was slightly better fitted but love it overall. IN.

  • Kerry McCombs

Meh. I’m going to go OUT. Too stiff. Looks like a crumpled paper column.

  • Aidan B

IN! It’s a little odd, but that’s unexpected from her and she’s pulling it off. And like the Uncles I really like the jewelry.

  • JauntyJohn

I can’t say I’m totally on board with the little peek-a-boo triangle there in the middle, but still, it’s an IN.

  • bukker

  • Imasewsure

I appreciate the effort but am still voting it OUT… don’t love the fabric or the overall look of the dress although I do like the bodice (more so on the model though)

  • prisma

Yeah, it’s ok. I’ll vote IN.

  • smh4748

IN. Lady Mary loves her that colorless shade that most of the dress is in, but the bright colors are saving it this time. It’s a really unusual set of colors–I’m not 100% on that shade of green, but I think that all together, it works. She also has the figure for a column dress, so I’m glad she’s the one wearing this dress. She’s always one who is trying to be interesting in her fashion, and I think this was a good match for her.

  • Yoshio

She heeded better hair (that goes for the past few photos of her as well) but this dress on her is an IN for me.

  • AlisonHendryx

LOVE IT. (though it speaks to how pale she is that I didn’t know there was a cut out. thought it was more white satin)

  • runjuliet

    In! Lovely!

  • IN! I don’t love the cutout, but otherwise I think she looks fantastic. The colors and the shape suit her, and the details with the neckline and the layers of fabric are really unusual and interesting.

  • Leah Elzinga

  • scimomma

IN. I love the shape, cutouts (which I normally hate), colors, and design. Could have used a slightly better fit in the bust and it’s a little wrinkly. So much more interesting than everything else.

  • Laura Livingston

A point for bring the color but the dress looks like folded dinner napkins. Out.

  • SouthernGirlRena

I love it – way IN

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN! It’s a great look on her and is very becoming. Also points for a totally non-DOWNTON look!

  • SophieCollier

Total IN. It looks like a pack of fancy gift tissue paper has been wrapped around her, but it’s so freaking pretty! Love the colors and the shapes and the fluttery bits. Kind of surprised this didn’t get a This is Totally Your Dress from you guys.

  • venusvelvet

IN, she looks lovely and graceful as usual. I like the dress better from the side, or perhaps in motion, but the top and colors look fresh on her.

  • SherryN

In. While I agree with the flag comments, the colors are a refreshing change as is the shape and she’s pulling it off.

  • Tracy_Flick

IN. Gorgeous society dame realness. That is a look made for a matching icy glare.

  • pugluv

    IN, I love it!

  • jomortonsalt

In- not a perfect fit but she finally got hair, dress, and jewelry all working together.

  • Beto

I don’t know, it looks heavy, don’t it? Love her hair

  • TinaBelchersawkwardmoan

In! It’s weird, but she’s working it.

  • Joey Melliza

OUT – it looks like they yanked the dress out of the designers workroom before she could actually finish the damn thing – it looks like a nice work in progress garment

  • Emily Roach

  • BlairBear

In I love the colors and the shape and she looks beautiful and commanding

  • megg

LOVE! It’s lovely, bright and different–LOVE her!

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

Out–she looks like she’s folded into a giant origami napkin.

  • LeelaST

IN. With reservations on the bodice – look sort of like napkins on a clothesline. But pretty napkins.

  • momjamin

In. Not perfect, not WERQ, but definitely in. Love the colors. Agree with the other BK who mentioned sailing. Lovely.

  • LibKat

So OUT. Looks like the signature colors of a down scale cruise line. And that middle part isn’t doing her lovely face any favors.

  • Melmmmendes

    Dress in, hair out.

  • ThaliaMenninger

In. I like seeing color on her, and I think the strange and complicated shape works as well for her as it possibly could.

  • xmixiex

She is spectacularly beautiful, but I hate the dress.

  • lunchcoma

IN. This might be the best she’s ever looked.

  • ampg

I love it; she should live in that shade of blue. IN.

  • librarygrrl64

A big IN for her (finally). Plus, her hair and makeup look great. This is a head-to-toe win for her.

  • Jennnni

The bust has some issues but it’s an IN for me!

  • snarkykitten

There’s a section in my parents’ kitchen that’s been repainted about 50 times, but as a kid, I peeled away the layers. It’s literally in that order: peach, green, blue

  • evave2

The color blocking reminds me of the Siriano worn by Miss Lowe yesterday. i guess they both got the same idea or same inspiration for that?

I think her hair is so “cultured” looking, like her character.

Am I right that all the people we are seeing today have make-up that looks harsh in the lighting and they all looked regular in person?

I vote in. This is unusual but I like the shape so much. She looks ethereal.

  • elirt

  • Akemi

    I mean…at least it’s not red.
I like the idea of it, but I’ve never been a huge fan of people wearing dresses that exactly match their skin tone.

  • mrspotts66

i think if she’d done something different with her hair, i might’ve liked this dress.
is that weird? does that make sense?
the hair just distracts too much.

    so, begrudgingly, an IN.
    but really, that hair? no.

  • bessann28

IN. It’s different and looks great on her.

  • conniemd

IN. I think I like it. But I’d say she’s one of the very few who could wear it, since it is so unusual looking.

  • Mazenderan

    In. it’s different, but elegant.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I’d give it an IN. I think she looks good and love how she accessorized.

  • I like it because it’s different and unexpected. Lady Mary is IN!

  • jenno1013

In! Very much in her style, and prettier than some of her choices. I would have preferred her updo not cover her ears, though…the effect is too dowdy for the edgy dress.

  • Out for the wrinkly skirt and questionable fit around her bust.

  • Evil Edie

Lady Mary is: Queen of the butterfly faeries!

The jewelry is gorgeous and I can’t hate on the Fae realness. In!

  • Tricia

IN. Very elegant. I love the colors and her jewelry.

  • AnnaleighBelle

It lets her skin really be the star, too.

  • TheGrandSophy

It could be fitted a little better, but it is an IN for me. Beautiful and unusual colour combinations and, all in all, very interesting and striking. And I feel it is good to applaud some risk taking when so many go for the usual.

  • Boobs Radley

In. Love where the colors are in relation to the design and the modern feel to it.

  • Sara__B

The gown is IN, but the awful center-part hairdo is OUT.

  • Kate4queen

In. It’s nice to see her in something different and she looks happy in it.

  • Monabel

In. It has some flaws, but the whole effect is lovely. And, an example of a color-near-the-skintone looking delicate on.

  • moxie_lady

Total IN. I think it’s elegant yet modern, and I will take that pearl ear cuff when she’s done with it, thanks.

  • Brittany

In. One of my favorite looks of the night.

  • Paula Pertile

The top as is, with the simple white column skirt, and no ‘flag’ trailing behind would have worked better for me.

  • Qitkat

I had to give this some thought, but decided I quite like the juxtaposition of the elegant with the edgy. Her hair is gorgeous too. Actually the more I stare at this, the more I like it. So few people can wear this close to skin tone as effectively.

  • kim bunchalastnames

    i love it.

  • IN. I love it – the fresh face was the perfect punctuation. The combination of colors and layering makes me think of pink sea shells and the beach – she’s like a pop art version of a sea nymph. And that RING – want. (Conversely, the side-view also looks a bit like the eyes of the god-suits in the anime Kill La Kill which I just finished and enjoyed despite the iffy sexual imagery, so that makes it even more interesting to me.)

  • shopgirl716

    In, she looks great.

  • SistaT

IN. One of my issues with her is that she usually looks, to me, so much older than she really is. This gown makes her look young and pretty and interesting while retaining some of the elegance that she goes for regularly. I like.

  • Meri

In! I have quibbles, but overall, she looks lovely.

  • a_liking

the more I look at it the less I like it, but still, first impact I was very impressed. so IN!

  • mlle

Why does it need to have weird boob darts? I loved it on first glance, since the colours and overall shape are killer, but now that I’ve noticed the boob darts they’re all that see.

  • EEKstl

IN, I loved this just from seeing her seated (missed the RC walk). A perfect way for her to do edgy, and the colors are fantastic on her.

  • Kristen

    I think its so pretty.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

IN. It’s a little stiff, but overall gorgeous on her.

  • Cindy Claussen

This looks like a dress that is a tasteful version of those Miss universe country costumes

  • lamamu

    IN! LOVE.

  • MaggieMae

OUT. I’m not onboard. Stiff. Wrinkled. Not great colors on her. Like Christina Hendricks, Michelle Dockery looks breathtaking on the show, but falls short on the RC.

  • crash1212

  • frannyprof

  • Ana the Hated

  • Adriana_Paula

    Friggin’ love it.

  • Jennifer Bober

In. Fit quibbles aside, it’s fresh and interesting without being overly tricky. The clean lines suit her and the colors make her stand out.

  • disqus_K28BInF1up

I love it. Just needs to be hemmed a tiny bit shorter.

  • Call me Bee

Love it. Interesting and modern, yet classic at the same time. IN!

  • samo_samo

    In, elegant and interesting.

  • Jennifer

    In! I love it.

  • alyce1213

In, lowercase. It’s lovely but the bust doesn’t fit — she needs support.

  • Zoey

In! She looks lovely. It’s rare that you look better than the runway model and I think she does.

  • IN! I had to think of Gustav Klimt by way of Op Art.

  • mickiemonkey

IN!!! Put her on a float in a parade!

  • marielle27

IN. She looks like a greece goddess. But like every representation that we have of the ancient goddesses, she should be barefoot because those shoes are quite ugly.

  • barbarienne

I dislike that the fabric looks so heavy, particularly with those light colors and floaty design. It makes some of the seams pucker, and it makes the garment stiff. But the design is good (and different) and huzzah for color!

I’m giving it an IN because it’s tastefully unusual, and it’s nice to see her go in that direction.

  • Sofia Lopez Garcia

    Totally IN

  • VioletFem

YEAH. It has a grecian goddess feel to it, plus the colors look beautiful against her skin tone.

  • Trickytrisha

IN. Absolutely adore all of it.

  • I think it’s lovely and striking. The colors are delicate, but everything else is special without being weird. Just wish it wasn’t wrinkled.

  • amanda lynn

    In! unexpected and lovely.

  • Tricia Rose

IN! Without a doubt! I see Jackie-O in this but modern and twisted with brilliant colors! Love, Love Love it! It also seems very much “hers” as if no one else could wear this but her!

  • WaterGhost

Out. That neck is a laundry line with sheets hanging off it. That strap should have been at least an inch and a half wide.

  • macaroni

In! Love the color combo. Very striking.

  • countervail

Out. It looks like a crepe paper craft Project Runway experiment.

  • altalinda

In! But the wrinkling in the back bugs.

  • Zuber

She seems wrapped in an origami

  • lalahartma

    I’m going with IN.

  • Glammie

In and props–because few women could pull off that dress. Lady Mary actually looks at home in it–amazing.

  • Susan Carson

I thought it is a pretty cool concept and shape. I was just wishing her hair was in more of a twist and not so prim.

  • kategs

I really appreciate the shape and colors except for the blue. Somehow for me, it’s incredibly jarring!

  • wontons

She certainly wears it with grace. It’s cute, it’s unusual, it’s young. I’m not sure if it suits her, but maybe it’s because her hair seems so Lady Mary to me. I wonder what she’d look like with a totally different do in this dress.

  • MissAmynae

I generally don’t like the word “fascinating,” but that’s exactly what this dress is to me. Unusual shape, the color story, the perfect styling….I can’t stop looking at it.

  • IngerMereteH

IN, and no question about it. Unusual and elegant, clean and springlike colours which suit her beautifully.

  • ErmengardeGreen

It looks droopier on her than on the model, so some of the effect of the shape is lost, but overall I think she looks sensational. And happy! That ear cuff does make me think of some fabulous future Bluetooth device to be used aboard the Enterprise, but I’ll allow it.

  • Cele Deemer

I cast my vote with the IN-crowd!

  • Columbinia

IN! It works on her amazingly.

  • Lisa

IN! She stands out and it’s so nice and floaty

  • Orange Girl

IN – although the hem and the heaviness of the column skirt almost ruin it. But it is a spectacular dress and it’s beautiful on her.

  • SH

It does look like a kid’s paper craft project but I like that. IN

  • PinkyK

    In! It’s summery and chic.

  • Deva

IN! The curves of the fabric are reminiscent of a Georgia O’Keeffe painting. She looks stunning!

  • suzq

I like it. I don’t love it, but it’s a nice, refreshing change of pace.

  • Shawn EH

    In. Very chic.

  • lundibleu

I like it, so am voting it an IN, but… I think it should’ve been a tad shorter. It looks like the length is causing the wrinkling in it, and being a tad shorter would’ve fixed that.

  • In.

  • kfizz

IN! IN in in in. I LOVE Rosie Assoulin’s stuff. So cool and chic and interesting. And Michelle’s totally working it. Edgy and romantic at the same time is such a great way to describe it.

  • dash1211

    Edgy elegance. In.

  • trisker

IN. The pink is way better than the white on the model’s dress. also love the way the skirt flows on Dockery.

  • Karen

an easy IN, its probably one of the most interesting things I’ve seen her in.

  • Esz

I always wonder what this fabric feels like – is it silk or some kind of poly? The seams are never quite right and the fabric looks really unforgiving to work with. Its stiff and thick looking.

  • Man Dala

IN. It’s dramatic, elegant and the splash of colour contrasts perfectly against the white of the dress and her absolutely flawless porcelain skin.

  • gracedarling

IN. I wish I could have seen it in motion as the fabric looks oddly stiff, but it’s so pretty I love it anyway.

  • Nick Pilgrim

It’s like an ASMR demonstration on how to fold napkins.

  • Shelby

    In. So beautiful.

  • GemFemme

    In. A big one.
It’s unique, beautifully made and visually gorgeous. Actually it’s my favorite dress of the night.
I kind of dig her Jane Eyre hairdo too!

  • Tom Markiewicz

    OUT. It’s too awkward.

  • Krysta

    Love! IN!

  • bananafish

  • Celeste

    In, love this look!

  • Big Bear

    Out. Clumsy and unflattering.

  • cocohall

Out for me. It looks like an origami dress gone wrong. And it makes her look a little boxy. She is not boxy. But points for trying something a little different.

  • andi56

    What an IN. Stunning.

  • stickee

It’s more a dress that looks good in pictures than when it’s moving. It looks very stiff. Also, she didn’t have her dress steamed. Again. Oh lady mary.

  • Jecca2244

too much fabric. Assoulin always works with too much fabric. Maybe stick to fancy books?

  • jif

Is there a “Shows Improvement” option? Oh, heck, it’s an IN. Unusual, pretty, appropriately styled.

  • megalomanic

IN IN IN, a thousand times IN! I don’t know how this dress manages to be both elegant and out there, but it does. One of my favourite RC looks in a long time.

  • Pterodactyl111

IN. I kind of love this, and also want those earrings.

  • procrastinatrice

This was the dress that I loved the most on screen. My opinion has not changed with the stills. That dress is interesting as hell. Pretty girl in a pretty dress with a refreshing edge. I am here for it!

  • CanIbeFrank

“Class, you each get 3 pieces of construction paper and 15 minutes. Let’s see who can come up with a dress1 Johnny–do NOT pull Mary’s pigtails! OK, class, remember we use our scissors for CUTTING and not for poking our neighbor!”

  • Snailstsichr

In. It is not perfect, but it was striking and different without being tacky or wierd.

  • SoAnnaPropriate

OUT for me. It’s the pale pink/cream/white body of the dress that kills it for me. It renders it mostly very drab except for some weird colored wings. Yes, interesting, but not in a good way.

  • Beautiful! She wears it better than the model. IN.

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

IN for the WIN! She looks smashing!

  • Judih1

In. Very unique love that she took a risk.

  • SamE

    In. She looks very chic

  • Sara Hottman

The bust fits a little funny, but it’s lovely. In!

  • SassyKansas

In! Pretty, fresh, colorful. And love the hair; very flattering on her.

  • Kelly

I say in because of the lovely drape of the skirt and the spot-on jewelry and the overall elegance. The bodice doesn’t work for me, though — there’s too much material, it overwhelms her bust, and I just hate that her skin appears to be the exact same shade as the cut-out. Why bother showing skin if it’s going to look just like a badly sewn-piece of fabric?

  • livesarah

In. The bright colours save it from being a flesh-coloured disaster. It’s a tiny bit too long, though.

  • ankali

Oh, IN, for sure. She looks just lovely, and graceful, and unusual.

  • Bethany Roullett

    IN! Unusual and still elegant.

  • quiltrx

A lower-case in…I like it more in idea than execution, but props for taking a risk (and that risk being kind of pretty).

  • deech_sea

IN! She looks lovely: fresh, clean, and poised.

  • PumpkintheCat

IN, as long as I don’t look too closely at the boob darts.

  • IN! I love everything about it. Retrofuturistic glam.

  • pdquick

    The flag of Bosnia. OUT.

  • Edie Rose

It was, IMHO the best of the night.

    I couldn’t love it more.

  • Samantha Irene

IN. I like it, soft but bold, and unique.

  • Contralto

  • BLauDGaspode

IN. It’s not perfect, but I really like it.

  • MarissaLG

IN! It’s modern and chic and 70’s and looks amazing on her and it stands out and I love it.

  • Demeter

It looks like one of those flag costumes in the Miss Universe pageant.

  • Joy Yeager

Out, wrinkled puckered seams, a belly cut-out that you don’t notice since that part of the bodice is skin colored, and Little House on the Prairie hair

  • AmeliaEve

IN – I am getting a super hero vibe that is bold but feminine. I wish it fit better, but it fits well enough to carry the idea, which I love.

  • holla

IN. and I don’t even mind the patch of skin in the middle

  • webslice33

IN!.just by being Lady Mary! IN!

  • Fitzperry

IN! I keep coming back to look at this. Love the hair and makeup too.

  • DinahR

  • demidaemon

I’m torn. I really like the bodice and her headsuit, but that skirt is wrinkly and doing nothing (plus the hip flaps are extraneous). I think it is a slight IN, though, for showcasing her face at its best.

  • pattie capet

Oh, c’mon. INININ. It’s different but not overstated. It’s great and great on her.

  • Ana Ced

in, but she does look like she is wearing a flag

  • RoxieRider

In. It’s striking and lovely and interesting.

  • LambeeBaby

I hate the Susan B Anthony hair. The dress is different, OK but not loving it.

  • Winterlight

In! It’s interesting and different without being weird.

  • Clash D

I like the idea of the dress but not the construction – the flimsy piece of string holding up her halterneck as well as the weird train cheapen what is essentially a lovely frock; from the side angle it looks stiff and doesn’t ‘flow’. IN – but only because the colour’s nice on her.

  • lmhess

Loved the dress because it was flattering, unique and quite classy! Not fond of her hair pulled back but who the hell cares? She’s such a striking woman!
