Emmys 2014: Camila Alves and Matthew McConaughey

Posted on August 26, 2014

Matthew McConaughey came to the Emmys, had everyone in the room kick him around all night, and then left empty-handed. We don’t wish the guy ill, but there was something oddly entertaining about it; like watching the nerds fight back against the jocks. “Ewwww, look at Mr. Movie Star in the front row, acting all cool and shit! You get NOTHING.”

Live in Los Angeles, California. Camila Alves is wearing a Zuhair Murad gown paired with an Aldo clutch, Neil Lane jewelry, and Brian Atwood ‘Hamper’ pumps. Matthew McConaughey is wearing a tuxedo, shirt, and bow tie by Dolce&Gabbana paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and Bulgari accessories.

This all seems to be in order. If you told us they’d worn these exact outfits a dozen times on the red carpet in the last year, we’d have no reason to disbelieve you. She’s almost always sheer and neutral in color, he’s always the peacock, in suits or tuxedoes of unusual shade. We’ll give them this: they’re consistent as hell.

But they look fine. No complaints. Except for his black shirt, but we almost feel that goes without saying.

He was orange. That’s all I could see.

    • Karen Belgrad

But he was way less orange than Matt LeBlanc (aka “Joey from Friends”)

      • Raspberry2012

        Orange is the New Matt.

(SEE? It works for both of them! Bwahahaahaaa!!)

    • Fred Vaughn

Who WASN’T orange at the Emmys this year?

  • AnnaleighBelle

What makes his stance always look so weird. Like he has a perma-wedgie or his legs aren’t properly attached.

    • Paige

      • AnnaleighBelle

        I see.

    • His legs are always subconsciously wrapping around a bongo drum?

      • demidaemon

Man, this sentence could go so wrong and I wish you took it there. 😉

  • Emily Dagger

I’d feel much better about hers if it were lined all the way down instead of stopping mid thigh, making it look like she’s wearing a Spanx slip.

    • gloriana232

Oh crap. I was JUST about to say “that’s how you do illusion netting” because most of it is invisible but now I can’t unsee that line.

      • Emily Dagger

Sorry! It’s bunching around her bust on the side a bit too, which again I think a full lining would have mitigated (instead of the bandeau thing they’ve gone with).

        • marlie

It’s short on the model too, which is a total design fail to me.

      • Kent Roby

The color match to her own skin tone is spot on, which we rarely see.

        • MissAmynae

          yes. the bodice is near-perfection.

    • Tee

I agree. The nude lining should have ended at the hem. The dress still looked great on her though.

      • Kitten Mittons

Yes, wish the lining had gone to the floor, and wish she’d removed that little bow thing at the waist. Otherwise, it’s an interesting lace to look at, and she wears it well.

        • Sarah

Yes, she does. I like the neckline’s shape. It’s unusual but not too weird.

          • Kitten Mittons

Yes, the neckline is lovely. She is such a striking woman, and it frames her shoulders and face nicely.

          • ccinnc

But she does not look happy. At all.

          • Trent

I know! They both had these sour, unhappy expressions the entire red carpet. And when the camera cut to them inside, she looked like she wanted to cut a bitch the whole time. Maybe she’s just over it…

          • Kitten Mittons

Maybe they knew he wasn’t going to win, and were over the pageantry of it all? I dunno. Maybe they had a fight in the limo? Or maybe they ordered food for dinner, and their order got messed up? That pisses me right off.

        • gloriana232

How did I not even see that bow belt? I’M BLIND

      • kat89

I agree. If the lining had ended at the hem, it wouldn’t have been bunching up like it is.

    • stonecoldcuddlewhore

I love everything else about her except that! her styling / hair / makeup do not look too “done” while still bringing the glamour. Too bad about the spans, otherwise she should have been my favorite.

      • FuhUgh

The nude lip is killing me here. She looks like “skin tone” mannequin.

        • stonecoldcuddlewhore

I can see that but I’m admittedly a nude mannequin weirdo fan and just love her coloring on top of my fondness for the look. I almost always do the opaque nude fingernail thing myself. Different strokes for diff folks:)

    • bitchybitchybitchy

That is my only quibble with Camilla’s dress.

  • @Biting Panda

But did you see The Night At The Roxbury meme? Comedy gold.

    • Kitten Mittons

Thank you for this. Made my afternoon.

      • @Biting Panda

        I do what I can.

        • Kitten Mittons

          A true humanitarian.

          • @Biting Panda

Some call me Mother Teresa, but you may call me Terry.

          • Kitten Mittons

I’m glad you said that, because I was going to go with Mama Reesy. Wouldn’t want to overstep.

    • DuBey2

Was that the one w/ him & Woody H. when they were up there to give an award? I was wondering if that’s why they dressed alike in 70’s style tuxes.

      • Karen Belgrad

Google “mcconaughey harrelson roxbury” and their outfits become “alright, alright, alright…”

        • FibonacciSequins

          OMG! So funny.

        • Kristi Mitchell

HAHAHA! Anyone else have the “What is Love” song running through their head now? (and the head bob?)

          • Karen Belgrad

  • Eva_baby

Tang-orange skin or not, I can’t hate on this guy. I really rather like him and although the Breaking Bad wins are about the only thing I liked about the Emmys, MM gave a fantastic performance in True Detective. And yeah, they look fine. Nothing to fangirl about, though. I am sure he went home and clutched his Oscar to his bosom to console himself with his loss.

    • RescueMe23

      Well said.

    • Kitten Mittons

I kinda wanted MM to win, but I can’t argue against Bryan Cranston’s win. Lots of deserving gentlemen in that category.

    • Rhonda Shore

i can’t hate on the weed poster child.

    • I hear that. I’m not in the BB fandom, but I loved True Detective and was pretty disappointed they went away with nothing.

      • Imasewsure

Agreed… Brian Cranston was awesome I’m sure year after year but MM was uniquely mesmerizing in True Detective and definitely deserved an award for his work. Luckily he also got paid and will probably ride the accolade train for a long time. I thought WH was amazing too in a much less “out there” way. So funny to see him as the conservative one for once.

    • mlurve

I don’t know if it was just my TV but literally every white person there looked orange to me. I saw people complaining about it on Twitter too, maybe it was just the lighting.

  • LadyVimes

He is so orange, and she is so done. Divorce in 5…4…3…

    • TAGinMO

Right? Her most noticeable purse is NOT her clutch.

    • formerlyAnon

She’s got that “Yes, I’m still pissed” look, but I don’t know about divorce. They always struck me in their interviews as a couple who were going to go through some rough waters, but also as a couple who really wanted to do the 30-years-married-and-the-grandbabies-are-due-soon thing.

Wanting is not having, of course. Maybe it comes down to the fact that I don’t think anyone could have gotten to the point of marrying him without knowing he was going to piss you off on the regular.

      • Imasewsure

I’ve never heard anything bad about him at all and they both seem pretty happy together… my guess is that the bitch face is for the press and not her man… who knows…

        • formerlyAnon

I’ve never heard anything worse about him than a lack of concern with body odor, and, if it bothers one, that he truly enjoyed smoking pot. But he’s also always seemed to me to be a fairly smart man with a kind of old school “I am the center of the universe” affect that occasionally trends sexist when he isn’t thinking about it. Who could talk the hind leg off a donkey and is possibly not so good at listening. Especially if what you’re saying is something he doesn’t want to hear. Especially something about giving up some good-time-Charlie moments with the bros. But when you come down to it, it is me reading a bunch of my irritation-triggers into flimsy evidence.

          • Sarah

Oh, my goodness. Except for the “trending sexist” part, “could talk the hind leg off a donkey and is possibly not so good at listening. Especially if what you’re saying is something he doesn’t want to hear. Especially something about giving up some good-time-Charlie moments with the bros” is the very description of my personal manimal. Uncanny!

          • formerlyAnon

Common human failures. We are all but imperfect, and our reach exceeds our grasp. However, once you breed, that particular combo becomes more of a stress point. Lots of couples get past it, but I think movie stars with the money to indulge their temptations and jobs that take them away from home have it harder, even if they can throw money at issues of day-to-day responsibilities.

          • Sarah

Yeah, I realize that that probably describes most men. Not a problem, even, but something about that “talking the ear off a donkey” thing really struck home with me. The man has a ring in his nose, tattoos everywhere, a very long black beard, and even longer black hair (Hagrid, Blackbeard, Thorin Oakenshield, etc.etc.) but he could sell a handgun to the Dalai Lama, I swear to god. Smooooth talker, he is.

          • formerlyAnon

It’s a valuable skill, applied correctly!

          • conniemd

I saw him on Guy Fieri’s cooking show. He was really sweet. He talked about his charity, which is an afterschool program for kids on healthy lifestyles. He also talked about teaching their kid about both of their heritages and speaking Spanish as well as English around the house. Nothing about him appeared douchey except that he does talk like a “good ole boy.”

          • Imasewsure

You don’t even need flimsy evidence to put someone on your Irrational Dislike List…. you should at least have some irrational reasons for placing them squarely on the Irrational Hate List however…. 🙂

    • DollyMadisonWI

      Orange is the new black…

  • Jackie4g

I know there’s a tailor out there who could hem his pants. I just know it. Why do neither of the happy couple know that?

  • Anna

  • Glam Dixie

I feel like this dress could work for her but doesn’t. The lining maybe? The fit? Everything seems a bit off, I’m not sure what it is but I don’t care for it. He looks pretty good, I can’t think of what would work with this besides the black shirt so I’m going to let that one go.

  • SewingSiren

Is he wearing more make-up than she is?

  • Vegas Girl

I did kind of like the way he & Woody coordinated. Something about it was fun and made me want to gang out with them at the after parties.

    • marlie

They totally looked like they’d be fun to hang out with!

      • Sarah

Considering that they are both noted for their…ahem…bohemian ways, partying with them would be quite enjoyable, I suspect.

        • Vegas Girl

But that can go the other way too, right? Like can’t get their asses of the sofa? These two seem like high energy boho’s who like to laugh, especially when they are together.

          • Sarah

If that’s what they seem like, I guess your first point is moot, eh?

          • Vegas Girl

Nah – because while they always seem like fun it was coordinating outfits that took it to a new level 🙂 (And – I’m not actually sure if I think MM is as fun when he’s not with Woody)

        • formerlyAnon

I’m in on “bohemian” in the “like weed, like to hang and shoot the shit” sense. But he reads waaaay more Texas suburban bro (with a good work ethic and a bit of talent) to me than anything actually boho. He was just one of many weed-smokin’ shit-shootin’ fellas wearing cowboy boots and driving pickups to college to join a fraternity and get a degree. [I wrote this and then verified via Wikipedia – he did go to UT Austin, he did graduate, and he really was in a fraternity. Wikipedia did not tell me what kind of car he drove or if he wore boots. My faith in the vision remains, however.]

(Edited because I cannot proof something effectively till after I publish it, apparently)

          • Sarah

Well, sure, but he also likes to sit around shirtless and play bongo drums. But yeah, my meaning of “boho” was a euphemism for “like weed.”

      • @Biting Panda

I want to hang out with them with known fun ladies too. They would be too much like two of the three stooges if they didn’t have some women to provide balance and turn on their more charming attributes.

        • Sarah

But, we could BE those ladies 😉

        • marlie

Good point. With these two, I’d just want to watch the two of them bust on each other all night. It’s akin to hanging out with my bf and one or two of his friends. 😛

ETA: Now that I think about it… MY friends and I are like that too!

  • NMMagpie

He was stunning in that leaving the car shot on Instagram last night. Perfection. She looks as she always does; beautiful but wishing she’d step it up some on the style front.

I was fairly certain he was not going to walk away with an award after the Oscars but man… you cannot deny that he and Mr. Harrelson just BROUGHT IT for True Detective. Damn fine drama.

    • Sam Smith

Indeed as to True Detective, some of the best acting all year from both of them.

      • cocohall

I think the wonky categories worked against them. True Detective was too short to feel like a series like Breaking Bad or Mad Men, but not short enough to be in the min-series category. It just seemed like the Emmys wanted to recognize their work but shoe-horned them into a category that didn’t quite fit. I actually thought Matthew was better in True Detective than Dallas Buyer’s Club, and he was pretty amazing in that.

I typed too soon- I just read below that the TD people submitted for this category. Miscalculation, it would seem on their part.

        • demidaemon

I read somewhere that they were forced to submit in the series category due to some wonky rules with the Writer’s Guild. which, unfortunately, worked against them.

  • marlie

I like her dress a lot, but I wish the nude lining went all the way to the floor. I like his suit, but I’m not too sure about the black shirt either.

  • lunchcoma

They look like movie stars, so no complaints.

I have nothing against McConaughey personally, but I tend to think that the True Detective creators had it coming for submitting a show that’s essentially a miniseries in the series drama category. I suspect if they’d labeled it a miniseries, it would have several more awards and Sherlock would have several fewer.

    • Sarah

Maybe, but I was damned happy to see Fargo win miniseries. It very much deserved it.

      • lunchcoma

It did, and I was rather surprised that either it or The Normal Heart didn’t pick up some acting awards. Sherlock is great, but I think it was overpraised, especially given that the last season wasn’t a strong one.

        • James

I have no idea how Matt Bomer didn’t walk away with an Emmy. Or I do but then I don’t want to think about that.

          • Mink Carlyle

It really was a total disgrace that Bomer didn’t win, and undermined the awards for me.

        • Imasewsure

Agreed about Sherlock. I loved it even with all of its weaknesses but I don’t really think it was award-worthy compared to some of the other options this year. Just a fun show with some really good actors having a good time

        • Sly

Wait for the Golden Globes and Oscars (I believe), that’s where The Normal Heart will pick up steam. My guess is the Emmy’s people only want TV people to win, not Movie people, and not HBO people. The Golden Globes is where HBO get their awards.

          • lunchcoma

That also seems like a good explanation as to why Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory keep getting nominated for and winning Emmy awards.

          • Sly

Exactly, they’re not going to give away their awards to movies/movie stars. They get The Golden Globes and The Oscars. It’s not fair, but I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what happens.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Yeah, that confused me too. American Horror usually goes in the mini-series category, so I didn’t understand why True Detective didn’t use the same strategy. I was happy that the voters weren’t dazzled by the movie stars “slumming” in TV land and gave the award to Cranston instead (I just finished watching Breaking Bad last weekend and the last 3 episodes of that show were amazing). I just hope Jon Hamm gets some love next year for Mad Men!

      • ccinnc

Much as I love Vince Gilligan, I was thrilled when the writer of “Ozymandias” (Moira ____) won over Vince’s “Felina” finale. I couldn’t stop thinking about Ozymandias for weeks afterward.

        • Angela_the_Librarian

Yes, I think Ozymandias was the best episode of the last season (and one of the best episodes of any show on tv period).

          • ccinnc

PS, your avatar brings back fond memories. I miss that show!

    • Chattygal

HBO got greedy – it wanted to return to the glory days of owning the prestigious Drama category and it wanted to double-dip victories by making a clear path for The Normal Heart in its acting categories. Backfired on all counts. (But Fargo *was* robbed – Billy Bob or Freeman should have won best actor, not Cumbersnatches).

      • DollyMadisonWI

Matt Bomer was completely robbed last night for Normal Heart. So was Ruffalo.

        • Chattygal

I’d argue Thornton (for Fargo) and Tolman (same) have the bigger claim to being robbed.

  • TheGrandSophy

Not that keen. Don’t like the black on black under that colour. Her dress is a bit dull or… I don’t know. Just doesn’t zing for me.

  • Qitkat

This dress is a Mexican placemat. Do not like.
Matt’s suit is beautiful. Perfectly fitted too, except for the hem, how does a custom suit fitting end up like that? Baffled.

  • Raspberry2012

His tuxedo has a hint of “nerd” to it, but it fits him beautifully and is still really cool. She looks amazing – I’ve never seen a cut-out lacy dress that looked so sophisticated instead of tacky. Kudos to them both.

  • formerlyAnon

The two of them gazing off into the distance like that in almost every shot – I wouldn’t be shocked to see statues of ’em in the park with pigeons gathered about. Or on some commemorative medal.

Beyond that, I am interested to see how their bones mix in the kids’ faces.

    • wontons

Their son was one of the most beautiful babies I ever saw. Haven’t seen any pics in a while.

  • SugarSnap108

Too bad about the wonky lining, because the dress is really lovely otherwise. And I say that as a staunch hater of lace and the sheer epidemic. But this lace is cool — geometric and interesting, rather than flowery and old-fashioned.

  • Las Vegas mafia wedding.

    • @Biting Panda

To each other? I’d like that.

  • histrogeek

    Hair is important though.

  • Little_Olive

I´m not big on lace, but this to me does not qualify as it and I like it. Nothing earth shattering, though.

It´s a shame that the beige spanx ends at her knees but covers her entire face.

  • Jaeda Laurez

They both look like they’d rather be home in sweatpants, but she looks very pretty, and he looks…like Matthew McConaughey.

    • Wink

Yep. They look very tense… like they had a huge argument in the car. Now they have to pose for pics and look ‘happy.’ I wish he would give up the prom-colored tuxedos.

  • James

Those pants, is it that difficult to hem them. Apparently. She looks lovely, I am not a fan of sheer but this can pass.

  • higgledypiggledy

Her look is a snore. His is… the usual MM deal. He sure is consistent: orange skin and a tux that the cast of the Jersey Shore would reject as too tacky. I can’t approve, but I also can’t hate. It’s his brand.

  • seventeenwest

He and Woody were half of a ’90s R&B group last night.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Camila has some strong bitch face going on.

  • frannyprof

I hate the Zuhair Murad naked look. You can see where the lining ends in that dress.

  • crash1212

One of the not many highlights of the show last night was the Woody and Matthew banter as they presented. And Jimmy Kimmel was hilarious in his “attack”. As for the fashion – they both look great…he could hem his pants.

  • KendraMR

I cringed when neither one of them knew how to pronounce ” Zuhair Murad ” during their interview with Giuliana Rancid, who is always cringeworthy. I’m a firm believer of ” If you can’t pronounce it, then don’t wear it” (if that were the case, then the sales of Louboutins would drop drastically )

    • alyce1213

A lot of people would be walking around nekkid.

    • Marjean Fieldhouse

we used to make a drinking game when she would consistently mispronounce “Har essss emportant” (hair is important) when she hosted Shear Genius. Being able to pronounce the catch phrase is important – and why does she always look like she’s smelling a fart

  • Alyssa

Their body language does not indicate a happy couple.

    • DollyMadisonWI

      She looks hungry.

  • MaryMcClelland

I’m glad the illusion netting blends better on her than it does on the model. On the model the illusion netting around the collarbone is distracting as hell.

  • MartyBellerMask

I love that dress on her. Dislike the bland hair and sour face. And his pants need a good hemming, but you knew that.

  • Call me Bee

But why do they look so crabby, I wonder. (And–I cannot see her and not laugh at those old episodes of “Sheer Genius” you Dear Uncles would critique….we could never, ever understand her speech.)

  • Lea Setegn

His pants are tragic. And her hair would look better up. Not fond of the bag. And is it me, or did he look REALLY orange on TV?

    • Sofia Lopez Garcia

      Like an Oompa Loompa

  • ShaoLinKitten

I thought it was cute how he and Woody wore the same outfit, one in blue and one in red.

  • MoHub

    She’s wearing a Polish papercut.

  • TinaBelchersawkwardmoan

Are his pants too long or am I getting the rules wrong?

    • gloriana232

      Bit too long, yeah.

  • Maggie

I feel like his pants are a little “teenage boy” in the fit, like the way a boy will always tug down on a well-fitting pair of pants to make them baggier. Camila kind of looks like she’s had enough of these awards shows for one year.

  • veriance

she looks thrilled to be there (hair is important!)

  • conniemd

I kinda like her dress. It was sheer but tastefully lined. It was caught the way McConaughey and Woody Harrelson matched. I’m in the minority in liking MM, I was commenting to my daughter how much television and the Emmy’s had changed as there were lots of A-lister movie stars there, and you have Oscar winning actors acting in television movies and shows these days – MM, Julia Roberts, Maggie Smith, Kevin Spacey, Hallie Berry, Jon Vought, Billy Bob Thornton and many I’m not remembering. That would have been unthinkable 10 years ago. The line between TV and and movies as pretty much blurred, particularly with the HBO’s of the world.

  • Claudia Fernandes

well, at least he dserved better an award for true detective than for dallas buyers club

  • B_C_J

I think her dress is stunning. It’s sensual
    & chic & tasteful.

    • ballerinawithagun

Except for that weird bow thingy sticking up!

  • wontons

    They’re so gorgeous.

  • Columbinia

She looks stunningly beautiful; he’s dressed like he wants us to know that he’s from Texas and not about to wear some effete conventional tuxedo.

  • I dunno, he’s got a smoking’ hot wife, an Oscar, and the lead role in the The Stand remake (rumored)…

  • PinkyK

OK….let’s get to it… Am I the only one that noticed he has a TON of hair all of a sudden!?!

  • suzq

Pants are too long. Otherwise, I’m even ok with the black shirt. Why the heck not? It’s TV. She looks fantastic.

  • vitaminC

Jumped-up trash with a little money. He looks like he’s never worn a suit before, but had to put one on for a court appearance. She looks like this stripper macramé project is the most dress she’s ever had on her back.

Wow, sometimes even I am shocked by my bitchiness.

  • Therese Bohn

I love her look! Wish I could look like that for just one day! He’s sharp and nice.

  • Orange Girl

He looked pissed when they announced Bryan Cranston as the winner.

    • DollyMadisonWI

Tough. He may have been good in TD but he wasn’t Ozymandias good. I personally took a bit of glee that TD’s attempt to sweep all the Drama Series awards from Breaking Bad didn’t work. They belonged in the miniseries category but like Walter White, they let their hubris get in the way and they lost.

I agree. Great comparison! I also was delighted to see Julia Roberts get shut down. You know that stings a little, even if it is “just TV.” Personally, I never go to movies any more.

I think you’re totally correct and that HBO screwed up bigtime by not submitting the show as a Miniseries. McConaughey deserved an Emmy for Rust Cohle. It’s not his fault that the series was submitted in the wrong category, and I was miffed on his behalf. I actually think he gave a better performance this year than Bryan Cranston, who after all was beaten by Jeff Daniels (!!!) last year. But that’s JMO. Cranston is amazing, not taking anything away from him.

hey! live him alone – I love Matthew McConaughey!

I dunno, I see Drawer Liner and Formal Bruise.

He bugs the daylights out of me. And his “tan” is always some weird color that didn’t come from nature. I would’ve hated it if he’d won instead of Bryan Cranston.

Are they mad at each other? They look like they can each barely stand to touch the other one.

I had a dream last night that I was their friend.

Awards shows are tedious as hell for the attendees. Often their publicist makes stars show up. McConaughey could care less. He’s got his lady by his side, and his Oscar at home …. who needs a stupid Emmy?

God she is soooooo boooooorrrrrrriiiiiiingggg. zzzzz….

That mixed-up Celtic print is frigging fabulous – albeit over a nude body stocking.

I really like his look. It’s stylish. Hers is a big ol’ NO for me, but I have always hated dresses that look like a lining with applique.

Does Camila even wanna be there? Damn girl, couldn’t you at least fake it? Oh wait, I get it. It’s that nekid dress she’s wearing. Probably feels exposed. Unsmush those legs and go for it girl!! Remember, you’re in fantasy land!
