We don’t think so, girl.

You’re adorable, but racer fronts are the work of Satan because they take the very best area of a woman’s body to highlight while she’s dressed (her decolletage, her neck and her shoulders, which benefit from any attention because they work as a frame for the face) and completely obscures them or changes their shape to be less flattering.  They’re terrible and all right-thinking people should reject them. We’re pretty sure your hairstylist is employed by the Dark Prince as well, because that’s some drip dry action going on right there. Also, this was clearly a cocktail dress made for a 6-year-old because you’re tiny and it’s too tight on you. It all needs to go, dear. Even the weird shoes.

But hey, your makeup’s cute. And you can’t beat that smile.

    That hair is HORRIBLE.

    • NinjaCate

That is not a strong enough word.

      • MaggieSays

Say it with a french accent. Horriblé!

    • FrigidDiva

You know, I like the color though.

      • Thomas

Yes, I can’t get past the style though.

        • FrigidDiva

Me either. It looks like my junior high school attempts at “beachy waves”.

          • demidaemon

Or, like her stylist stuck her head in a vacuum cleaner.

      • littlemac8

Agreed! It is flattering to her complexion and that has not always been the case.

    • demidaemon

Exactly. I couldn’t get past it? What the hell happened?

    • Alison

Looks like the ill-advised highlights and body wave that my sister was talked into circa 2003.

  • nannypoo

Her makeup is pretty and I liked the color of her hair, but everything else is pretty bad.

  • Alyssa_T_Robot

oh but her super cute smile! i love it!

  • colleenjanel

I like the idea of the hair, but the execution was bad. And to be honest, I’m diggin’ the shoes.

    • Fitzperry

Yes on the hair. Looks like the results when I try to achieve tousled waves.

    • smayper

With you on the shoes! I like a Mary Jane, and these are an interesting twist on the genre. The heels look a bit like needles to me, though, so I’d need a modified pair. Like a training bra, but on the other end — for women who are on the downslope of being able to wear high heels.

  • LiterateWonderful

The way she is styled in the movie poster behind her would have been better!

  • Capt. Renault

To be fair, she came here right from the pool.

  • spirit52

Hate he dress and the fit. Oddly loving the shoes! As for the hair: WHAT stylist????

    • Chickadeep

I don’t hate the shoes either!! I’ll just come over here and sit by you.

      • TrixieConQueso

Move over honey, I am sitting with you, on this “J’adore Those Shoes” bench.

    • Vaniljekjeks

I really love those shoes as well. And I think I need a pair.

      • Constant Reader

I love the shoes, too. They deserve a better dress.

        • Mary Sinning Poole

Slide over. I like the shoes too.

  • Karen Belgrad

As a fellow short necked gal, she needs to stay away from the words “mock” and “turtleneck”.

  • Dino Bonačić

Crunchy hair just gives me dirty and smelly vibes.

  • RussellH88

That dress makes her look pregnant (Is she? Did I miss something?)

And that hair is horrible. Someone with a vendetta against her must have bribed her stylist.

    • Alyssa

That was my first thought! I therefore searched, and people are speculating, but nothing is confirmed or denied.

      • Guest

I googled and came up with nobody even suggesting it. Just stuff about when her character on Mad Men was pregnant. I think that’s just her body type.

    • demidaemon

I think the dress is just too damn tight.

      • AthenaJ

Agreed, she probably just had a big meal or something and that dress shows every (practically nonexistent) lump and bump.

  • CPT_Doom

I had such high hopes from the cropped picture on T&L’s Facebook feed, then came over here to see that horror of a dress. Seriously, any dress that can make someone as small as Ms. Moss look chubby (or like she’s got a baby bump – if Cathy Cambridge wore this the tabloids would explode in excitement) must be burned. Her make up is great, I don’t hate the hair, and the smile is wonderful. Everything below that is a travesty.

  • ashtangajunkie

ACK. Except for the lovely face. Aaaaaaaaack.

  • i think the color combo is great too, but otherwise, nope, no working for me.

  • dustinrhodes

    Perm scorch. OMG.

  • fursa_saida

I saw a preview for this movie a while ago, and I guess they really did their job because I’m looking at these pictures and thinking way more about how creepy the movie seems than about her hair, which is sitting there being creepy right in front of me.

    • Alanna

I watched it on Amazon last weekend. (They’re making it available via pay-streaming before it’s released in theaters.) It’s a good and VERY odd little movie. Eerie, yes, but not really in a creepy way. More like Twilight Zone.

  • Gatto Nero

But she tries so hard. It’s as though she’s always testing out new looks to see if she’ll land on something that works.
The dress isn’t great but might have been passable in the right size. And I can see how the shoe mirrors the shapes in the dress (and I like them on their own).
But the hair really undoes everything here. The styling is like a ’90s throwback, and I think the short bob suited her better.

    • demidaemon

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. However, I would advise her that she can do this privately before the images go out to the masses and people think she or her stylist is blind.

      • Gatto Nero

She usually appears to be happy with how she looks in public. She needs some tough love from someone with a good eye and good taste before she leaves the house.

        • demidaemon

She does, for some reason. I can only assume that said stylist batters her with compliments before she leaves, before drinking themselves into a stupor over their failures.

  • Jessica Freeman

I really loved her short blond hair. This is a disaster.

  • Anna

Hair via “How to Crimp Your Hair Without Heat” tutorial.

  • Judy_J

That dress is doing terrible things to her body. I feel certain she did not try it on in front of a 3-way mirror, or she would have kicked it to the curb. And I’m flabbergasted by that ridiculous hair. She looks like she slept in her car.

    • mshesterp

I feel badly because this look provoked me to google “elisabeth moss pregnant?”–the dress is that unflattering. Elisabeth, honey–no. Keep the shoes, start over on EVERYTHING ELSE.

  • &theJets

Ya know, I like the hair. Being a curly/wavy-haired gal myself, it is refreshing to see someone without ironed straight hair.

    • MilaXX

I like the hair too. I think the dress needs to go up a size and the makeup needs to be glammed up a bit to match the body con dress. If you’re gonna dress like a housewife, then go full on housewife.

    • Constant Reader

Me too. I just wish it looked more purposeful and less Walk of Shame On A Humid Morning.

  • SugarSnap108

I don’t love a racer-front, either, but if this dress just fit, I’d give it an OK. The hair is an abomination.

  • Fitzperry

Although I don’t particularly care for this one, I kind of disagree about racer fronts. I think they can be very flattering on women with great shoulders, especially if they’re not so well endowed in the bust department.

    • sweetestsith

I agree. I have strong shoulders, and small boobs. When I can find a racer front that fits well, it actually looks really hot. This one is cut too low in the armpits though, and I also think its a style that requires a longer neck. Hair up at least.

      • Gatto Nero

Yes — the cut around the armpits is especially bad here.

      • what not

I agree, too. I think racer-fronts are striking on the hanger, and on certain bodies too; they just have to be cut really well and aren’t right for everyone.

      • kimmeister

Agreed with you on all points (and also have strong shoulders and a small bust). For someone without a long neck, I think the fix would be to have the ring-neck a little bigger and less turtleneck-y. One thing I do like about the low-cut armholes, however, is that at least the edge of the dress isn’t digging into her there, which is often a problem for the broad-shouldered.

    • Šima

YES YES YES YES!!!! As a lady with shoulders to spare from yoga, I’m all about it.

      • Fitzperry

Same here! Plus I spent too much time in my youth on a foil blanket slathered in Hawaiian Tropic and my shoulders seem to have handled the exposure better than my “décolletage.” 😀

    • Yes, that woman who used to be Clooney’s arm candy, a blonde, who used to be a swimmer? She always looked great in racer front garb. (Of course, women generally look better when photographed next to Clooney.)

      • scoobynacks

I don’t recall him dating a swimmer. He dated a wrestler, Stacy Keibler. She’s a blonde.

        • Yep, that’s the name I was trying to remember. I think I confused her sport with that of the woman who married the prince of Monaco–whose name I also can’t remember! Anyway, Princess Monaco was a swimmer, I believe, and she’d probably look good in a racer front top too!

    • decormaven

Remember what Abe said: “I love your shoulders, you look like you’re in the Olympics.”

      • Fitzperry

See, Peggy is meant to wear racer fronts . . . Just maybe not this one.

    • enuma

I could see Jessica Biel pulling off this dress.

  • The sad thing is is this looks better than the sister wife dress she wore on The Daily Show so this doesn’t look as bad to me as it should.

  • Glam Dixie

She looks so bad but so pleased with herself that I actually laughed when I saw her. That dress is probably 2 sizes too small and her hair is pure 80’s, shoes are fug. Please, just start over.

  • Nancer

I love her smile! And I also really like the shoes, especially from the side.

  • The hair is a flat out mess. Girl. No.

  • Kent Roby

Elisabeth Moss is the one I love. The dress? Not so much.

  • MissusBee

The only plus about racer backs is they’re a great leveller. No-one looks good in them, ergo celebrities are real people too! Not exactly what the fashion industry is supposed to aim for though.

Elisabeth Moss looked great in her running kit in Top of the Lake. In running kit. Puts in perspective just how unflattering this outfit is.

  • schadenfreudelicious

I love the idea of a racer front dress, the execution of it rarely works though…plus this dress is giving tiny Elizabeth the appearance of a pooch so no…

    • Gatto Nero

A bodice or top with a cutaway shoulder can be beautiful. A lot depends on how curved the lines are in the front — too much curve can make the wearer look round-shouldered.

  • stellavision

Am I the only crazypants who thinks this is a pretty good look with a few executional issues? I love the waves in her hair, even if I could do without the crunchy texture. And I love a racer neckline — I think the dress fits funny in the waist area, but as a concept I like it. In fact, I want it for myself.

    • kimmeister

I quite like it, just would have gone up a size and put her hair up.

    • DuBey2

Yes, in the thumbnail it looked great. I think the color, length , & shape around her face are a personal best.
I also love the neckline on her (from the front) but the waist & er.. tummy area was not good in profile.
I just love this shape hair so much better than a bob or whatever she usually wears.

  • crash1212

I love a nicely deployed racer back dress because it shows enough clavicle and totally exposes a nicely turned shoulder. This one goes a bit high with the neckline for my taste, but I don’t hate it. Love the shoes and like the idea of the hair – the waves are nice on her. My only major quibble is the dress is a bit tight.

  • Wink

I like the black and blue combo. The shoes are okay, but seem better suited for fall.

  • aquamarine17

she needs some classic yet sexy things in neutrals or whites or black

  • Moni

Oh, Lizzie, no. That is not your dress or your hair. On the plus side, I adore those shoes and her smile is, as always, her best accessory. She just looks so cheerful! That goes a long way. But still . . . NO to the dress.

  • moxie_lady

I’m completely obsessed with those shoes. The rest, for me, is an almost-but-not-quite.

  • carnush

Did anyone else get a flashback to a young Lindsay Lohan in the first shot? I’m thinking circa ‘Mean Girls’.

  • LibKat

Another lady star suffering during the worldwide conditioner shortage. Do I need to start hoarding what is in my shower?

Good God, what is wrong with the hair people. This is way over the line for beachy and into manky.

  • evave2

I always wonder about this type of shoe: I hate when my toes are exposed (visible?) on one foot and not the other. I don’t like what it looks like. On me.
But other people seem to wear them and look fine (well, I think it is strange for right foot to have toes and left foot to have no visible toes).

Actually I like the racer back top: she has nice shoulders and upper arms and maybe she wanted to show THEM off rather than her bosom.

But the hair doesn’t look unkempt but kempt it looks unkempt unkempt.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

The dress is too tight, but I actually like the rest of the look (including the hair). [ducking away]

  • BendinIntheWind

I’m going to dig my heels in to defend the racer-front silhouette (in general, not necessarily here) – if you’re pear-shaped (like me) but have decent shoulders, the racer front *can* do wonders to highlight your shoulders and make you look a bit sleeker and taller. Only if applied correctly, of course!

  • frannyprof

    The whole look is tortured.

  • alyce1213

I like the color of her hair. It’s a good change, warms her up. That’s all I got.

  • Anglow

Did she ever smile like that as Peggy Olsen? It is a GREAT smile!!

    • Bexxx

Don’t know about that but she always did as Zoe Bartlet.

  • Little_Olive

That hair feels scrunchy through my screen. Please out those shoes to a good purpose and kick whoever did that to your head on the butt.

  • Sophie

The face looks good. The shoes look like torture devices.

  • RescueMe23

That racerback makes her look like a linebacker..and don’t even get me started on that hair..

  • ejsesqueer

Send that look back to Leighton Meester

  • yllas

I don’t like black and blue mixed. I don’t like the way the front makes her look like her shoulders are hunched. But I disagree about the hair, I LOVE her hair here – why is it I’ve seen far, far, far worse hair on other stars, really blind-plug-ugly scrunching and sticky-outy flyaway and everyone is wetting their pants over the awesomeness? I love her hair here. She looks young and pretty, and she is not a pretty woman (pretty-ish, but needs somw work).

  • Betsy

She’s adorable. That dress is super unflattering and the shoes look tortuous. I kind of like the hair.

  • DeniseSchipani

She wore a kind of oddly unflattering dress on the Daily Show the other night, too. But her smile makes up for a lot.

  • MarieLD

Time for a psychoanalysis: Dressing as Peggy too often has made her embrace a body conscious look that she doesn’t have to do.

  • msdamselfly

She looked great at some other recent events but this is terrible.

  • Mothra

Gracious that dress is unflattering. And so is that hair.

  • Denise Rambo

This is the perfect time to bring out one of my favorite lines regarding horrible hair … “It looks like a dog chewed on it.”

  • Zeee

I’ll take the weird shoes, please.

  • smh4748

I don’t hate this dress, except that it is so obviously too small. I think she would have pulled it off in the right size. And I don’t even hate the shoes, which is unexpected.

Fix the hair, and get this dress in a couple sizes larger, and this would be a solid look, IMO.

  • Ozski

Looks like she’s transitioning back to blonde again, which I thought was very flattering for her last summer, but she needs a serious trim here. I think she has fantastic shoulders and can actually wear this neckline. However, we saw Lizzie on The Daily Show last night and my husband and I agree she’s preggers, or maybe she’s just put on some weight? Either way, this dress aint doing her any favors. The face though, as always, is delightful and I can’t wait to see this movie.

  • CanIbeFrank

Racer fronts work when you want to show off your gorgeous shoulders–I say they work here for sure. And I love the shoes. The hair? Not so much. But the smile makes me not care.

  • snarkykitten

She looks terrified. Did her stylist threaten her dog or something? Is that why her hair looks like shit?

  • Paula Pertile

    i like the shoes.

  • Not applicable

Does her stylist HATE her? That dress is just wrong from all sides– and yes, she’s tiny and fit! She looks a little uncomfortable too… and she’s trying to have really good posture holding her shoulders all the way back like that. It’s like she kinda knows it’s not working…. Poor Pegs. 🙁

  • quiltrx

She can keep the shoes and wear them with something else. The rest needs to go, except that smile.

  • marlie

If the dress were a size bigger or straightened out, I’d actually like it. What I can’t abide are that hair and those shoes.

  • StillGary

I do like the softer do on her and the shoes!

  • Laylalola

Oh I disagree about the racer top. it can be a sexy change of pace. (And I think that’s exactly what she was going for here and pulled off.)

  • SophieCollier

I usually hate racer tops too, but she’s got the right build and look for this. I do think it’s a bit tight, but she still looks good. The hair is not so great, though.

    • anyalama

I think racer tops look good if you have absolutely killer shoulders.

  • Mr. J.

She smiles like a little girl…..adorable.

  • She does not have the neck for that kind of neckline. She looks like she’s perpetually shrugging.

  • unbornfawn

Great face! The rest of it needs to go.

  • kim bunchalastnames

i’ve never pictured feet with waists before.

  • Leah Elzinga

    Jesus Christ, Elizabeth. BANGS.

    • ohbear1957

Tyra would refer to it as “fivehead.”

  • Miranda

Wow, from the homepage I thought we had something here…then I clicked to come to the rest of it and……..oh dear…just no.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I like the shoes. The dress, no so much.

  • enchanted216

Except for it’s too tight, I think the style suits her. She looks cute.

  • I love those shoes. I can’t help it. I think they rock. The dress and hair however – make her look like she’s doing the red carpet walk of shame. The “I’ve just been shagged in my limo” look doesn’t look good on anyone.

  • Sherilyne Cox

I like the dress’s overall impact except for the profile….but it looks like it’s going to a different event than her wild, wiry, dry as a barren Kansas cornfield hair

  • lbl

I only like this hair on Kristen Stewart and even on her it can be too much.

  • KateWo

Did you hear she’s the rumored female lead for season 2 True Detective?? Woo!

    • demidaemon

I did. I think it would be an awesome casting choice and maybe the way for her to finally win an Emmy.

  • Trishington

If her hair was less rat’s nest-y and the dress actually fit, this might have worked. And I love the shoes – not weird at all.

  • ♠♥zee♣♦

    Sex hair.

  • Pudgy Possum

I am not gonna hate on this one.

  • tpalgal

I don’t hate the dress. In fact, I kind of like it. Just think she needs to go up one size. I like how the color blocking accentuates her curves in the front-on shots, and I think the racer cut is not that bad here. Also, if there’s any room on the Shoe Love Bench, save me a spot. The hair I cannot get behind, though.

  • somebody blonde

I actually like the dress, but holy jesus that HAIR. Seriously, what happened there?

  • She’s had such great hairstyles lately that this just makes me weep. I dig the shoes, though.

  • Pterodactyl111

I think I’d like those shoes if they were paired with something else.

  • Really, really, REALLY horrible! So frigging off…how can she or her stylist not get this?

  • ShaoLinKitten

I read a rumor that EM was in talks to star in season 2 of True Detective. Kind of excited about that, though it seems thematically a little too similar to Top of the Lake to be true.

    • siriuslover

Yup, I just read it in Vanity Fair.

      • ShaoLinKitten

I wish they’d just cast the damn thing already. It’s supposed to air in January? But they still haven’t cast it? That seems like a short turn around time. They’re also talking about Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Taylor Kitsch. To which I say… ehhhhhh.

  • Columbinia

Bathing suit that kept going and grew a pencil skirt.

  • MightyMarshal

This is clearly a super hero cocktail dress for very serious superheroes. It looks like it should be on a poster by Kris Anka.

  • Aurumgirl

That dress is definitely influenced by Stella McCartney, and that in itself is a sure sign of the apocalypse. Also, I disagree that the race front neckline is unflattering here. The truly unflattering detail is that blue/black interplay at the waist, which, when she turns on her side, makes her look like she has a beer belly. Not a baby belly, but a beer one. And there is too a difference.

  • musi_

    that. hair.

  • Thom

Pick the dress in the next size up, and brush out those salt-stiffened waves (those look downright crunchy, and I’m partial to sleeker hair with this body-conscious look), but otherwise, I’m a huge fan of the silhouette *and* shoes. Somehow, her body seems to have the illusion of high and broad shoulders in public photographs, so I like how the racer-front frames her shoulders but still offers some emphasis to the chest, and the color-blocking balances it all out for me.

I disagree, Uncles: the hair is awful, but the outfit’s pretty kickin’ to me.

  • Ahhhhh being a petite gal with some tummy and ass and hips is quite the conundrum
