Daniel Radcliffe in Raf Simons at the “What If” New York Premiere

Posted on August 05, 2014

It drives some folks nuts to see the Amish-style “buttoned-up shirt with no tie” thing; especially when paired with a suit. And while we agree that it can come off way too precious on some guys, on others, it feels totally appropriate. For the most part, it’s a look reserved for the twinks of the world:

Like so. You wouldn’t want to see bigger guys like, say, Zachary Quinto or Chris Pratt attempt this look. The former would look like a serial killer and the latter would look like a tent revival preacher. No, this is for the Elijah Woods and Dan Radcliffes of the world.

Having said that, we’re not entirely sold on the colors here. We love tone-on-tone, but we tend to think that there needs to be a certain level of contrast between a jacket and shirt. And looking at these pics, we’re wondering now if that need only intensifies without a tie to break up the monotony. One thing’s for sure: it’s a gorgeous suit.

Now can we please get someone to convince him to groom his head. He looks so … fuzzy. At the very least, let’s get those brows under control. They look like they belong on an 80-year-old’s face.

    Are they remaking “Fur”?

  • Nikko Viquiera

I saw “Daniel Radcliffe” in the title of the post and I got all tingly with hope thinking Pecs McHollywood would be in one of the pictures. sad face.

    • Anna

Me too! Had to google “Daniel Radcliffe bodyguard” to get my fix.

      • Nikko Viquiera

oohhh good idea! I’m on it. lol.

        • Anna

His name is Sam (personally, I think he should change it permanently to Pecs McHollywood, but that’s just me) and is apparently Daniel’s regular bodyguard.

          • Nikko Viquiera

I just checked google images and…speechless. Thank you.

          • Anna

There really needs to be a Hot Handler calendar so that we BKs can have all these images in one place. I know it would help me when I’m stressed out at work. I nominate Pecs for March, because that’s my birth month 😛

          • Anna

Just thinking of the collective well-being of the kittens! Think of it employers: less stressed out kittens means fewer sick days!

          • Hot Halendar TM

          • You can have Pecs for March if I get HGH for February. Wearing nothing but a giant candy heart.

          • Anna

          • Bill Craven

There needs to be a tumblr with slash fic.

  • In_Stitches

I’m definitely with you on all points; he looks like Tammy Brown with those caterpillars, it takes a waify hipster to work a fully buttoned, tie-less shirt, and there’s something irksome about that shirt and suit combo. I’m not sure if it’s that they’re too similar in tone for it to be a successful tone on tone, or if it’s because of the textural differences or the green plaid of the suit, but it just ain’t working.

  • He looks so pleased with himself and I can never bring myself to fault DanRad.

    • Sam Smith

      He Is so adorable.

    • Constant Reader

His smile is always so genuine that I am willing to forgive him a few minor fashion quibbles.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Ugh… they are going to need to full landscaping crew on this one. I find all that hair coming out of everywhere so disgusting. He looks like a face on the side of a tree.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

HAHAHA!!! Can you imagine how scary the insides of his ears must be?

    • bookish

Awe, disgusting seems a bit harsh. Dude’s a hairy SOB, and that’s just the way it is. I do think he’d look a bit nicer with his eyebrows groomed in the middle, but I suspect what we’re seeing is already a groomed version.

  • Rhonda Shore

I love the buttoned up look and i think the monochrome thing is working here.

  • ashtangajunkie

He’s way too scruffy, but still so bloody CUTE.

    • Carly Clement

I agree… I weirdly like his eyebrows, they have a certain about of charm, and that hair is working for him! it is the right length!

  • @Biting Panda

Why does he always look to be on Day 3 of a coke bender?

    • KinoEye

Heh… my ex boyfriend’s cousin is a Brit. She told me she once met Daniel in a very posh bar in London, and had no idea who he was. Harry Potter’s really not her thing. They ended up spending some time together. He was thrilled she didn’t really know anything about him. At one point in the evening, they went to Daniel’s parents’ house. He went inside and returned with an 8 ball of coke, which they did together in a park. She was horrified to learn later on that he was only 16 at the time — she was 24. And she’s no attention whore, so I believe her.

      • Lily

Yeah, he’s been very candid about the large amount of drugs and alcohol he was doing in his teenage years. He’s also known for going to rando people’s parties and hanging out with them (like a tiny, young Bill Murray), so I absolutely believe this could have happened.

        • @Biting Panda

“(like a tiny, young Bill Murray)” made me day.

fwiw, I would drop dead if Bill Murray showed up in my world.

      • Skippymom1

Sigh. After reading this I feel like someone just popped all the balloons at my birthday party. I do hope he is off of them now? He looks so healthy.

        • Fitzperry

^This. I had somehow missed news of Dan’s substance abuse. He does look great these days. Hope it means he’s off the stuff.

        • Constant Reader

AFAIK, he’s clean and sober after having a brief relapse last year. That happens to a lot of people — they get sober for a while and think “was I really an alcoholic?” and try drinking again. If they’re lucky, they find out quickly that the answer is yes, and get back to being sober. Daniel was lucky. I hope he continues having a happy and healthy life.

  • kmk05

    No, don’t touch the brows!

    Don’t touch ANYTHING. He’s perfect.

    • MK03

YES. I love a pair of heavy brows on a man.

  • Laurie Cubbison

I like the buttoned-up look, but then it reminds me of my Grandpa Reuben, which is probably not what these boystars are going for.

  • Thomas

Raf Simons makes such great men’s clothes, but such hideous women’s clothes for Dior.

  • KinoEye

A HUGE thank you to all the kittens who recommended A Young Doctor’s Notebook on the last Radcliffe post. Binged that this weekend (And The Fall — no words can describe the disappointment I felt when the last episode ended and I realized I’d have to wait for a second season) and I thought it was absolutely delightful. Such a joy to see Dan outside of Harry Potter, and to see him doing so well. I feel like I’ve grown up with him. Barring some huge, awful scandal, he can do no wrong in my book.

The look? Well, it’s Raf Simons. I’m amazed it’s working as well as it is for him.

    • Kitten Mittons

Speaking of recommendations, I’ve been meaning to tell you for quite a while that I watched that documentary on Candy Darling, and it was very interesting. It took me a while to get to it, as I pretty much never have solo TV time, but I enjoyed it. Thanks so much for the suggestion, it was worth it.

      • KinoEye

You’re most welcome! Glad you liked it. One of the best docs I’ve seen lately.

        • Kitten Mittons

Yes, though I don’t get to watch too many. It did pique my interest in Warhol as well. I know the basic info about him, but it showed him in a different light than I’d seen before. Candy was such an interesting figure, though. And a true stunner to boot.

      • Kent Roby

“I Am Divine” is another great doc; I saw it a week ago.

        • Kitten Mittons

Ooh, thanks. I just added it to my Netflix list, it looks really good. It might take me another 3 months to get to it, but get there I shall.

          • Kent Roby

It is really great, and it shows just how hard Glenn worked to stay busy as an actor and singer, much more than I realized.

          • Kitten Mittons

Sounds like I would enjoy this much more than the FIVE episodes of True Blood that are hogging my DVR space that I cannot find time for/bring myself to watch.

        • KinoEye

LOVED that one. Saw it a couple of weeks ago. Divine/Glenn is my hero.

  • SistaT

I kinda love his fuzziness. I find him extremely cute. His face looks appealing – his eyes and smile are bright and open.

    • Constant Reader

He’s got such a boyish face and he’s so small that a little scruff goes a long way toward making him look more mature.

  • HM3

As for DR: nice, though I find myself wishing the shirt were a SLIGHTLY different color than the suit.

  • rebeemoon

Every time I see him, I just want to grab my tweezers.

  • Peri7473

hey, He shaved his neck. that effort goes a long way for me.

  • Wink

Who knew that Donald Trump hair and Andy Rooney brows could be so adorable?

    • Kitten Mittons

  • LibKat

I hate when men over groom their brows, but Daniel needs to meet Tweezerman.
Am I bad for thinking he doesn’t shave before these things because he’s still trying to prove that he CAN grow a beard?

  • MilaXX

Love the suit. Wish the shirt were a different shade of blue (perhaps lighter?). Love the hair wish he would groom the brows and shave the neck beard.

  • Moni

I think this is perhaps the first time EVER that I have not hated the buttoned-up-shirt-with-no-tie look, and I’m attributing it entirely to the loveliness of that suit. 100% agree on the head grooming, though. I long for Zachary Quinto to have a sit-down with DRad here, where he teaches him about the proper care and maintenance of heavy eyebrows.

  • MarissaLG

I typically really like the Amish look. I think he looks great here, but yeah someone please run some wax or clear mascara through those brows.

  • 100% agree about the manscaping. Suit is terrific.

  • Anapestic

Aww, he’s so adorable. If I could clone him, I could make millions renting him out to neglected grandmothers who have no one to feed their cookies to. (And get your minds out of the gutter, “feed their cookies” is not a euphemism.)

  • Greg

Down with the Tie. He looks great – clean lines and modern. Wish he shaved though. Hipster fur is out.

  • Skippymom1

Is he trying to emulate Martin Scorcese with those brows? They look like two catepillars trying to mate. And he is so handsome, but . . .ick.
I love the suit, especially on him.
    Now where is Pecs McHollywood?

  • lynnlee

I hope he never touches his eyebrows! He’s adorable. He looks like Ernie from Sesame Street.

  • Dancer

It’s amazing how fuzzy he is. I just saw him at comiccon and he didn’t look quite so fuzzy…

  • ktr33

Uncle Leo brows. Anyway I think he’s cute as hell.

  • Beto

I don’t know you guys but I like big (controlled) brows.

  • traceyishere

Please get someone to fix those eyebrows!!

  • cocohall

I wonder if he operates under the notion that showing off abundant facial hair will mitigate his general boyishness/Harry Potter past. My brother was blessed with a very youthful face but found his patients didn’t take him seriously, so he grew a beard when he was entering medical practice. I mean Daniel Radcliffe is not only boyish in face, but quite physically small as well. The facial hair may be the only thing that prevents him from being handed a children’s menu and a booster seat at restaurants. So keep the beard, but trim it up, Dan.

    • demidaemon

I have a similar problem (extraordinarily youthful face, which seems to be more of a hindrance/fortune to shorter men), but I have never been inspired to go on full facial hair, as it pretty much drives me crazy.

    • Kikishua

My (ex)husband looked very young for ages (not boyish or short but somehow youthful). He shaved as soon as they STOPPED asking him his age in pubs (by which time he was 29)!

  • Mr. J.

    Cute as a button.

  • Heatherbelle

Thanks for that link, I really enjoyed that article and hadn’t seen it before. I do think he’s pretty wonderful, I have done ever since I saw him on “The Graham Norton Show” singing the whole of Tom Lehrer’s “Periodic Table Song”. Too fabulous.

  • PinkyK

You’re right, total Andy Rooney brow(s).

  • paintedfish

thank you re: the fuzzy head. i was thinking the same thing.

  • Martha Anderson

I think the texture of the suit fabric allows this look. I would prefer a deep cream colored tie, but that is me.

  • marlie

I love the suit and the shirt, but totally agree that he could use some grooming north of the neck.

  • quiltrx

I’m all for grooming the brows, but I’m liking the funky hair he’s sporting lately.
    And Danny…where is PECS?

  • ankali

Point of order: Zachary Quinto always looks like a serial killer.

  • Columbinia

All I can see is a bunch of blue and a pair of eyebrows.

  • demidaemon

I sympathize with him on the brow problems, as they are also my brow problems.

he looks pretty good here, but that may just be because of his wonderful blue eyes.

  • OffToSeeHim

God, I just want to wax him from the neck up!

  • MarandaGodbolteam

  • KinoEye

That was a great read. Thanks for the link!

  • gloriana232

Love this suit. Gorgeous colour and texture.

  • Ashleigh

    he. is. adorable.

  • e jerry powell

That is the first Raf Simons I’ve seen this year that I haven’t wanted to vomit on.
