Chloë Moretz in Miu Miu at the “If I Stay” New York Premiere

Posted on August 19, 2014

In a totally unforeseen (by us, anyway) development, Hollywood starlets, in the last few weeks of summer, have started dressing like it’s, y’know, summer.

And while we’re tempted to try our very best Miranda Priestley impersonation (“Florals. For summer. Groundbreaking.”), this is just too cute not to love it on sight. Especially since she’s been floundering quite a bit on the style front lately.

Those shoes are kind of a goofy off note, though. We don’t mind the idea of silver shoes (although they wouldn’t have been our choice), but a dress like this doesn’t need a funky-chunky heel to  pull focus. A simpler pair of sandals (possibly even flats) would’ve been the way to go.

    • @Biting Panda

This is so fabulous! I like the funky shoe, it cuts the priss factor.

      • Lilah

Yes, I love the shoes with the dress.

        • BayTampaBay

I like the shoes but do not care for the dress one bit. As much as I try I am not a miu-miu or Prada fan.

          • Glam Dixie

I’m with you, Tampa Bay, that dress is ugly.

      • MartyBellerMask

PRISS FACTOR! Tonight, after MILF ISLAND.

      • J. Preposterice

I wish the shoes weren’t too small for her, though.

      • lundibleu

I like the idea of the shoes, but they just don’t fit. Her feet are falling out of them, and that’s bad.

Otherwise, yes, she looks fab and far better than recently.

    • Adrianna Grężak

The make up is great. This is the first time where she looks less like an awkward teenager and more like a young woman

      • R.A.

        LOVE the makeup. It’s stunning.

      • Kristi Mitchell

up close it’s beautiful, but pull back and the dark lashes eye make up make her eyes disappear. Am hoping it’s just from camera lighting, but would probably have liked it even better if they had lightened up on the dark corners just a smidge.

      • SassyMcFrench

I thought that as well, like, that’s what she’ll look like when she’s an adult: stunning!

    • seventeenwest

Those were definitely my dream prom shoes as a mid-’90s teen. She looks so cute, I can’t fault her for them. The Sharon Stone hair, however… It’s gotta go.

      • Nicole

Me too!! I also owned a pair of jellies when they came back in. They were disgusting by the end of that summer.

    • Kitten Mittons

This is the most I’ve liked one of her outfits, maybe ever. I don’t care for the shoulder treatment so much, which looks kinda cowboy to my eyes. And yeah, flats or sandals would have been better. But it’s a really cute dress, and her head looks pretty damn good.

      • kimmeister

I agree about the cowboy shoulders. They make me expect to see a bolo in the collar!

        • Kitten Mittons

Whew, I thought maybe it was my western upbringing. Glad I’m not the only one. Otherwise a really cute dress. And normally I probably wouldn’t like the exaggerated collar, but it suits her.

ETA: I see you just said the same thing about the collar. We are on the same page today! Soo……what do I want for lunch today??

          • kimmeister

You want a plate of enchiladas with, um, strawberry lemonade?

            • Kitten Mittons

Ha! That sounds delicious, actually. What I brought doesn’t sound nearly that enticing.

            • kimmeister

Well, I was going for what you want, not for what you actually brought. Meanwhile, for my lunch I brought a “limited edition” chocolate mint Slimfast shake because there is an ice cream social this afternoon for the HR team and I wanted to make room for the extra calories. :-

            • Kitten Mittons

And you hit it on the head! Now that’s what I want :(
But I have a banana, peach yogurt, cup o’ soup, and some Cheetos I’ve been holding for a rainy day.

        • Madam Von Sassypants

Damn, now I kinda wish there WAS a bolo tie happening there.

      • Glam Dixie

Yes! It just needs snaps, haha

        • kimmeister

          In a Z formation?

    • Anna

Mostly a personal best from the neck down. Hair though is giving me bad flashbacks of my first experiments with L.A. Looks hair gel.

    • CB

      LOVE that dress.

    • kmk05

Everything here is great, despite the fake tousled hair and the clunky shoes. She looks adorable.

    • gitchygitchymama

why i reckon i’ve never seen a housecoat with beads and piping before.

    • TinyDynamo

This is ADORABLE. Agreed that the shoes aren’t quite right – maybe a pale gold metallic sandal would’ve been better? – but really this is great.

    • girliecue

Oh uncles, it’s because they’re dressing for NEXT summer.

      • Jacob Bowen

It is some sort of joke! My students start school in 2 days, so now they’re going to ditch the velvet and heavy fabrics to remind me that it’s summer. CRUELTY!

        • demidaemon

They do like to twist the knife like that.

      • Imasewsure

Oh Girliecue, you are very wise and well educated to the ways of the Hollywood RC!

      • demidaemon

    • Amanda Semrick

I actually kinda like the shoes – helps keep it young in my eyes.

      • MoHub

Interesting. To me, the shoes were too old for the dress. I wanted to see something more girlish on her feet.

    • lynnlee

She looks lovely. In that close-up of her face, she looks a lot like Debbie Harry.

    • Carrie

It’s cute, but a bit twee for me. While I don’t love the collar, at least it does break up the look a bit!

    • Pablo Ulloa

Close up picture… I’m getting a Michelle Pfeiffer vibe… Anyone?

      • Tracy_Flick

Yes! That’s who she reminds me of. I was just thinking that the hair and makeup are a bit aging.

    • MarissaLG

I love this dress so much!!! (Nothing grosses me out more than a miu miu heel, but other than that, A+!)

    • MoHub

It was fine until I got to the shoes. I was thinking flat, strappy sandals or even a silver Mary Jane.

    • kimmeister

I normally dislike a high collar on her, but its deep, sharp points really mitigate it. Well done.

    • Dany

      Why the Showgirls heels though?

    • ashtangajunkie

She looks awesome! It’s nice to see her embrace how cute she is, instead of trying to dress so much older than she is.

    • boweryboy

Meh. Looks like a bejeweled bath towel with a collar.

    • Nancer

While the shoes may not be the exact right note with this dress, I totally understand why she wanted to wear them. They’re fun!

    • MilaXX

Love everything from the ankles up. The shoes are odd and doing funny things to her feet.

    • Alicia

Somehow this feels like something Hailee Steinfeld has worn. I can see why she chose that nail colour, it certainly needed something with a bit of edge, but I really hate that shade.

    • marlie

I think she looks adorable. This totally suits her, and it’s young and fun.

    • Vivi N

Just an adorable dress. I actually think a pair of shoes in metallic silver was the way to go (unfortunately, not the pair Chloe is rockin’). I feel that bringing a color shoe into the mix would have made the dress become a bit teen-ish, too cutesy. The silver gave it a bit more edge.

    • Danielle

      Flawless face, goofy-ass shoe.

    • NMMagpie

Great dress and some super cool flats would make this just right.

    • Kbear

If you took away the collar and cowboy yokes – it would be great. The collar is uneven too which really irritates my eyes……

      • Sanglots longs

See, I kind of find the oddball collar/yoke/piping effect helpful in giving this otherwise very sweet dress a bit of unexpected edge.

        • Kbear

That’s cool. Mostly the fact that one side is longer and larger than the other is what bugs me. On an expensive dress – there is no excuse.

          • Sanglots longs

I guess I was seeing that unevenness as an effect of the photo angle, plus the fact that the collar seems to be kind off-center on her neck (so maybe it’s rolling unequally on each side?). That is to say, I mentally corrected for the wonkiness and thus excused it. If it’s really defective, you’re right–no excuse!

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Not sure how I feel about matching toe nail polish to shoes. I think I don’t like it.

    • papillon

The jewels ruin the shoe, the collar ruins the dress (maybe if it wasn’t white?) but outside of those things, she looks very pretty and youthful.

    • spirit52

      she’s pretty

    • crash1212

Beautiful head. Excellent dress. Horrific shoes. She looks really cute.

    • cocohall

She looks fantastic. I would happily let either of my teen girls head out the door in this, including the shoes. (Cause the shoes are coming off after about 5 minutes anyway.) I’m guessing the sweetness of this dress is intentional, given that the subject matter of the film is a bit dark (doesn’t the rest of her character’s family die in an accident? Isn’t the If I Stay have to do with whether her character chooses to live on or go with her family?) I would guess the PR people said don’t look too somber or grown up – keep it light.

      • papillon

That’s precisely what it’s about. Her soul is stuck in some kind of purgatory after a tragic accident kills her parents and sibling and then (by the looks of the trailer) the love of her boyfriend helps her decide to stick around.

    • Sophie

I like her make-up, but the dress looks rather bland to me – I have trouble liking pastels, and the only thing standing out to me is the collar, which makes it more interesting.

    • flamingoNW

I hate the collar but otherwise I like. Shoes = agree

    • imperfectlaura

Loving all the Miranda Priestley references. The shoes actually look like mirrors to me.

    • FibonacciSequins

Very cute dress, perfect for Chloe. Hate the shoes.

    • SewingSiren

I think Miu Miu is a good fit for her. I like the whole look even the shoes, except they don’t fit her properly.

    • Tanya Wade

Best she’s looked in a while. Love the lip color. Total baby Pfeiffer realness.

    • elemspbee

silver shoes may have saved this country floral. the dress looks weirdly heavy.

    • ktr33

I like the shoes and am dismayed by the little cowboy detail at the shoulder. But overall:cute.

    • Mothra

I could do without that collar detail.

    • MM4321

      Super cute! Good for her.

    • frannyprof

Her pinky toes are trying desperately to escape the fug that is those shoes. Love the dress.

    • Denise Rambo

I would have like the dress SO much more without that collar. A simple jewel neckline would have done it for me.

    • Comfy

She should have worn Cate’s sandals.

    • Biology Princess

This is much better than usual for her. But she consistently chooses high-necked styles, shortening her neck look. I understand wanting to be demure, but there are more elegant ways to go about it.

    • Lilyana_F

The dress is too cute for words and the make-up is gorgeous. Well done, girl.

    • conlakappa

I see her right foot is yearning to be free again!

    • GeoDiva

The collar/shoulder area is weird, but the rest looks great.

    • Evil Edie

I like the shoes, but donot like what they are doing to her feet. Her toes are shrieking

    • Constant Reader

This is s step in the right direction, so as long as Chloe promises to do something about that dye job I will sign off on the shoes. See? The Bitter Kittens will negotiate with you, Chloe!

    • stubbornthoughts

      The shoes are meh.

    • Brittney P

I got distracted by the words “last few weeks of summer.” THANK THE LORD. August in New Orleans is horrendous and I am counting down the days until I can enjoy my new balcony without sweating.

She does look super cute though.

    • GiveItToEmStraight

Cutie McCutes. Way to pull it off, girl.

    • BLauDGaspode

She looks simply adorable. And then there are the shoes. Well, none of us is perfect.

    • Kitten Mittons

Interesting, thanks for the perspective. It does help frame the face, but it still reads distinctly country & western to me. Although the floral helps balance that out, I suppose.

    • demidaemon

This is cute, though i am not fond of the collar detail. It’s a quibble, but i must state it. Also, those shoes are eating her feet.

    • GemFemme

“And we all twee on….” Sung to Instant Karma.

    • yethica

Is it just me, or does she look like a very young Kim Cattrall in this?

    • ankali

Cutest she’s looked in a long time, maybe ever.

    • Alloy Jane

Yeah. I have curtains in a very similar floral pattern so I can’t sign off on the dress. And considering I just picked up a pair of 4″ Princess Puffy Sleeves for Payless stiletto sandals that fit better and are cuter than her 60x more expensive Miu Mius (I did the math), I’m gonna have to say NO to those too. This isn’t so much an “OUT” as it is a “meh.” Well, those shoes are OUT.

    • Kikishua

That is the absolute BEST shape of hair for her face – she looks so pretty.
