Cate Blanchett in New York City

Posted on August 15, 2014

We feel the need to cleanse the palate after yesterday’s uncharacteristic Cate style debacle. She let us down, it’s true. A nation mourned. But it’s time to seek the light again, darlings.

Clearly, Cate got up this morning and said to herself, “Self, I’ve really been letting my fans – i.e., the world – down by allowing myself to be photographed looking like a pottery class teacher on laundry day. I think I owe them a little bit of street chic.”

And thus it came to pass. And thus she finally managed to make those tricky sandals work.

You are forgiven your sins, Cate. The world rejoices again.

That bag’s still pretty fugly, though.

I know its practical, and I know it makes her more loveable for using it, but that bag is pure “I have a small dog trapped in here”.

She looks like a New York fashion editor. Fabulous.

      • livesarah

She does look like a NY fashion editor, and kind of soulless as a result, if chic.

    • Lily

Still hating the purse. It looks like someone skinned a roadkill armadillo and sewed it into a purse. The size is serviceable, but the color is just plain awful.

      • formerlyAnon

I’ve been refraining from criticizing the purse because I hate that color leather so much. I’m sure it’s simply early life associations, but it screams “peeling vinyl faux leather” to me, now matter how authentic or expensive. However, since you brought it up . . .

      • J.W.

The bag reminds me of body parts preserved in formaldehyde.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

A piece from Damien Hirst’s little known handbag collection

          • J.W.

            Well said!

            • bitchybitchybitchy

It was the first thing that came to mind!

      • alyce1213

The color in leather is nauseating.

        • Lily

I’m trying to decide if it is taupe, or gray. Maybe graupe?

          • decormaven

            Old lunchmeat.

            • kimmeister

That is *exactly* the color of past-due roast beef. Nailed it.

            • demidaemon

I was thinking movie institutional gruel, but you are also correct.

            • J.W.

              I’ve seen it…

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Think how incredibly, awfully kitschy that bag would be if it included an armadillo head. The mind reels.

    • imperfectlaura

It’s the opposite of a scroll fug. I was thinking “What’s so special about this?” and then I scrolled down and figured it own. I will bow to anyone who can make tricky sandals like that work. The purse is less than stellar though.

    • formerlyAnon

That is one blandly botoxed-looking forehead.

This is baseline, for her, in NYC. The shoes save it from being generic.

    • kbshee

Coveting the sandals and I also want to take a look at the shirt she has on under the blazer.

    • MoHub

Great improvement. My faith is restored.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

      Chic as fuck.

    • mommyca

      classic Cate… I love it…
and I love the bag too…
      oh… to look so effortlessly chic like Cate… let’s dream, it’s Friday…

    • Carrie

The purse may be fug, but it’s refreshing to see a lady star carrier a purse because she USES it and not just for arm decoration!

      • MilaXX

I would carry that bag like no body’s business.

        • Carrie

It isn’t my fave, but I can see why it could be a workhorse bag, especially if you’re needing to carry everything.

        • Tina M.

Right?? I can’t believe everyone’s calling it ugly; guys, I need to carry stuff and it’s way chicer than my stupid free tote bag from the library.

      • FibonacciSequins

I don’t even think it’s fug, used appropriately. It’s just not a bag that goes with everything. It’s also too big for an everyday bag, but apparently Cate has a lot of shit to tote around.

        • Carrie

She is spending a solid half-day plus at the theater. I can easily see full bag of cosmetics, food, maybe a book…

    • Thomas

That bag and those sandals are still bringing the look down.

    • FibonacciSequins

And the world makes sense again.

    • Anna

Praise be to Cate. I don’t care for them, but I love that she re-uses her accessories. And I would love to know what’s in that Diptyque bag.

      • FibonacciSequins

I’ve decided she bought a bunch of diffusers as gifts for everyone’s dressing rooms (because candles would be a fire hazard in an old theater).

        • Anna

I could see her being the type to do that too!

      • kimmeister

I, too, was noticing the repeat pendant.

      • decormaven

Like minds. The fig-secented candles- mmm.

        • Anna

          My favourite fig scent!

    • MilaXX

Much better. she was starting to look a little on the crazy side.

    • bananafish

I wish I could see her in this outfit without the bags and jacket. The jacket’s not bad at all, but there’s just too much going on around her collarbone. The outfit is too chic to be lugging that much baggage.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Hate the sandals, but I covet those sunglasses and that top. And of course she would shop at Diptyque. Dead chic!

    • katetastrophe

Did a bird poo on the nose part of her sunnies?

      • kimmeister

HOLY SMOKES you might be right!

    • Judy_J

Those sandals are the prefect counterpoint to that black ensemble.

    • another_laura

So true, T Lo, that bag is awful. The color, it is to barf.

    • TinyDynamo

LOVE. Love everything. I think it’s a trick of the shot, but I swear that looks like a gold whistle pendant. And if it is, I want it!

      • BLauDGaspode

I thought so, too! I got so excited. Upon closer inspection, though, I don’t think it is, which makes me so sad.

        • TinyDynamo

So I’m not the only person scrutinizing that picture?!? Good! Let’s make ourselves some gold-dipped whistles to wear! Start the trend! :)

    • QHarp

The shape and color of that bag makes it look like she’s carrying a tiny elephant. It’s ugly. But it also makes me wish I had a tiny elephant.

      • Qitkat

I have coveted the bentwood elephant designed by Charles and Ray Eames for years. It’s just adorable, $330 for an sanctioned copy in molded polypropylene, and in prettier colors than the bag, and about the same size :)

      • Pennymac

I know someone who stole a baby elephant once. No lie.

        • Thomas

          Please tell more lol

    • li

This is gorgeous. And actually, the bag doesn’t look so bad when she was carrying it like a carry-on or gym bag (yesterday’s post) instead of a shoulder bag like today’s.

    • hughman

OMG, DIPTYQUE IS MY FAVORITE!!! It’s all about the Baies candle!! IT’S A SIGN FROM GOD or a GOD-LIKE ENTITY!

      • Anna

Me too! LOVE Baies. And Figuier.

    • Denise Rambo

That bag is absolutely my style but it comes in so many FABULOUS colors and color COMBINATIONS that I can’t imagine WHY she has THIS nothing color. Unless they gave it to her because they couldn’t SELL it, it was so ugly.

    • Monkey Toe

I wonder what her favorite Diptyque scent is?

    • LeelaST

Third time I’ve seen that bag; can’t shake the resemblance to corpse skin. (Not that I’ve seen “live” corpse skin, just ewwwh.)

    • alyce1213

OK, now this is serious Off-Broadway Stage Actress on her way to work. She looks like she belongs.
I guess this is now the Cate Blanchett West 46th Street Tours — it’s a limited run, unlike Reese and Tay.

    • ashtangajunkie

She looks fab. Thank goodness! I hope there’s a ‘feu de bois’in that Diptyque bag. Heaven!

    • carrie

      I still hate the shoes.

    • marlie

Perfect deployment of the sandals. I’m still not crazy about the bag, but again, I appreciate that she’s actually using it to haul stuff around.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Those sandals would have been so much better with the jumpsuit. I guess she just didn’t want to wear them 3 days in a row.

    • Kathy

Take thy sandals from off thy feet and replace them with something more hygienic.

    • ktr33

Ugly and empty. Instead of taking that paper bag, just stuff your new smelly candle in the purse. Lotsa room. good for the environment!

    • evave2

Guys, she likes the bag. I appreciate her for actually wearing/using SOMETHING SHE LIKES. Only the Goddess Cate can do that.

    • Man Dala

She looks fantastic, I bet heads were turning as she walked by.

    • demidaemon

PHEW. I was a little scarred after yesterday, but now I know it was just Cate’s laundry day and all is right in the world again.
