Zoe Saldana in Lanvin at the “Guardians of the Galaxy” New York Special Screening

Posted on July 30, 2014

As LBDs go, this one’s pretty damn dull. Granted, the whole point to the LBD is that it’s a basic go-to that can be styled in a whole bunch of different directions, but even so:

Dull. Needs a necklace or metallic shoes. Anything to jazz it up just a little. Then again, we’re not sure there’s any bit of styling that’ll distract from that wonky bodice.

On the other hand, pregnancy really agrees with her. Not only does she look soft and pretty, but the dress looks better on her than it has a right to. She’s gone very low-key in her style and it works well for her right now.

      All that seaming looks tortured.
This may be a dress that only looks good in motion.

      • Shawn EH

Zoe looks beautiful, but I’m thinking this Lanvin is totally FMO. It needs that 50s-A-line styling because it’s so defiantly not A-line. With minimal styling like this, it just becomes a sack. If she’d put her hair up and found a yellow hat — she’d be okay for meeting the Queen in England, and still wrong everywhere else.

        • demidaemon

It definitely helps that, on the runway, the lighting, the short time in front of the cameras, and the difficulty in getting a good close up all help to mollify the effects of that horrible seaming, which cannot be hidden so well on the RC.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

I’m not a fan of all the seaming, but I agree that she looks so soft and maternal and all “glow-y” that I can’t really find any real fault.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Zoe’s face is looking lovely-she seems to be happy with where she is in life, which always improves one’s looks

    • Thomas

It looks like a slip that’s been taken out way too many times.

    • NBG

Loving the preggars glow so I will forgive the flaws in this. You work that Baby-making Shine, girl!

    • sugarkane105

I like everything but the shoes, and applaud her for simply getting out of bed. And Lord, does she look beautiful pregnant.

    • joancarol

I like the whole look. She looks serene.

    • Jaeda Laurez

It looks like a wrinkled nightgown. With that said, SHE looks lovely. But that is in spite of the dress.

    • Janet B

I don’t like the length or the styling.
      She’s glowing despite the flaws.

    • Glam Dixie

Is that…..satin? Automatically makes it look like a nightgown when you have spaghetti straps and satin. Duller than dull but she does look soft and pretty.

      • Thomas

It says silk, but it does look like satin.

        • Jackie4g

Silk is a fiber, satin is a weave. You can have satin out of silk or cotton (sateen) or rayon or acetate (flag). Satin is woven so that instead of the thread going under, over, under, over, it is like five threads over, one under. That’s what makes the surface sheen. Satin can be of any fiber.

          • Thomas

Thank you for explaining this to me.

            • Jackie4g

Happy to assist. Lots of people think that satin is a fiber.

            • Thomas

I felt so dumb when you pointed it out, but now I can correct people when they make the same mistake! Haha

          • Kitten Mittons

Just adding my thanks, I didn’t know this either!

            • Jackie4g

              You’re welcome!

            • Thomas

I’m glad I’m not the only one!

            • Kitten Mittons

Most definitely not. My mom taught me to sew when I was younger, but I never did much with it after teen angst hit, and I don’t remember her teaching me about different fabrics. She probably did. She’d probably hit me upside the head for saying she didn’t if she could reach me from my home state.

            • Thomas

Haha A lot of things go out the window once teen angst hits lol

          • demidaemon

Thank you for this. You learn something new everyday!

    • teensmom99

I actually love it on the model and can see how it would work on a model from the 1950s (like Suzy Parker) but this is NOT a maternity dress. I wish celebs would wear actually maternity dresses that were designed for pregnant women.

      • Kent Roby

Dita would be able to make this dress sing.

        • Violentcello

I’m not sure even Dita could save this. The bodice and hem are just too wonky.

          • Kent Roby

Sacrilege! Dita could save a frock made out of flour sacks.

            • Violentcello

That’s nothing against Dita and everything against this dress.

            • Sophie

But could she save a dress made out of shiny black flour sacks?

        • Imasewsure

And she would have styled it right too

    • frannyprof

Girl is PREGNANT and FEELING IT, TLo!!!

    • Kent Roby

The runway version was helped by the drama of the hat and gloves; the dress doesn’t seem to hold up well on its own.

      • kimmeister

I find that everything is helped by dramatic hats and gloves.

        • DuBey2

Here, Here! err, did I spell that correctly?

    • Dino Bonačić

The case when the dress itself is kinda bad, but the whole impact is quite easy on the eye.

    • KinoEye

The runway photo seriously takes my breath away. That hat. Those gloves. FIERCE.

Zoe looks gorgeous, but she does need some decorating. A statement necklace would have been a good idea here.

      • Jackie4g

I’d have gone with pearls or a pearl drop from a chain.

      • conniemd

Yes. The dress works as a fierce look. Zoe is treating it as a soft look with the maternity. It’s a dress that needs attitude to wear it.

    • Denise Rambo

      It looks like a nightgown.

    • Lilah

Weird. The bodice on the model looks fine. The finishing is just wonky on Zoe.

      • myandyleigh

I think the problem is that the model is not pregnant while Zoe is apparently huge. I didn’t realize how huge she’s suddenly become, but she looks quite far along. Anyway, it doesn’t get the drape and hang on Zoe that it does on the model. Which, you know, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do when she’s got a good-sized human suspended through her hips and midsection.

I think right now she could come out in a burlap sack and look smashing. She’s glowing and becalmed. It’s the best accessory, all the more glorious because it’s so short lived.

        • Kari Roberts

From what I’ve heard, she’s got 2 in there.

        • Lilah

I think that’s definitely has something to do with it, but if you look at the edge stitching on the bodice on Zoe’s version, it’s just crap when compared to the version on the model. I actually think the dress would have been smashing had the finishing been done correctly.

    • Jackie4g

Horribly constructed dress, however, as an LBD that works during a pregnancy, it gets a pass. It’s low key enough to show the woman’s curves and still allow her to be graceful. I would have loved a pearl necklace to set off her gorgeous skin.

    • TinyDynamo

The torso & 3/4 shots look pretty good, but the full body shots are awful. I think they simply took a dress that is technically too big for her (2 sizes larger, maybe?) and placed it on her pregnant body, letting her belly & boobs take up the slack. In the final full body pic, it’s clearly too long/too big, & it pulls up at the front hem, bc her belly is lifting it up. Why can’t stylists just find actual maternity clothes? They’re made differently for a reason – pregnant bodies are different than non-pregnant bodies!

She herself looks lovely, though. And to me, the overall effect is simple, easy, and pretty.

    • Flavia Pantoja

It is a beautiful dress on the model. But it doens’t seem to fit Zoe at all. Actually it looks like a completely different dress. And of course, she needs something… a necklace, a good lipstick, earings, some kind of color!

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

I’m so relieved to see how well she looks here. Far less brittle than she has in the recent past.

    • GillianHolroyd

That bodice has been tortured into pin tucks for Zoe. Have to give this one to the runway model who has been styled perfectly.

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

If the stylist had the straps raised 1″ it would have made all the difference! Interesting dress… Not loving the one sided hair thing!

    • marlie

I just can’t get past how bad the bodice looks on Zoe compared to how it is on the model. If it’s pulling that much, then it isn’t the right dress for her. But SHE looks lovely.

    • thesevenendless

She’s having twins right? Do the effects of pregnancy hit earlier when one is pregnant with multiples?

      • SewingSiren

        • thesevenendless

I thought so; she already has the wider stance most pregnant women have when they are later in their pregnancies.

          • eandh99

think of Chris Hemsworth’s wife who had twins in March, she was noticeably carrying by 3 months and huge by 7 months

    • SewingSiren

She looks good, but she would look GREAT if she just went ahead a bought some beautiful maternity clothes cut specifically for her pregnant body.

    • MilaXX

Pea in the Pod, please!. Seriously either a designer needs to come out with a celeb maternity line or these lady stars needs to just wear maternity on the RC. This looks like the wonky top doesn’t fit because she went up a size to accommodate her babies. If she didn’t have a baby bump this dress would slid clean off her. That said, I like the idea of a simple black dress on her. Even with the wonky bodice this looks pretty good on her. I wish she had gotten more creative with the shoe, but this looks a lot better than it should.

    • Imasewsure

I like her more in this than in anything else I have seen her in this year… that’s not saying much… but much better shoes and some basic bling would have lifted this out of obscurity for sure!

    • PinkyK

      It looks like a nighty….

    • Jeremiah Capacillo

Black dress with black shoes? Baaaaaaasic.

    • spirit52

She’s beautiful. The dress is ill-fitting

    • quiltrx

The bodice of the dress looks so structured on the model–and it looks all ‘saggy nightgown’ in the version Zoe’s wearing. And where the seaming seems to have purpose on the model, it just looks like random mistakes on the real-world version. I wonder what happened between points A and B?

      • FibonacciSequins

I think the dress looks different because it was let out to accommodate Zoe’s pregnant figure.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

As LBD’s go, Zoe’s stylist could have done better for Zoe. Pregnant women can look great on the RC.

    • EEKstl

She should definitely have gone with a more exciting shoe, but I gotta tell you…I love this dress. And yes, pregnancy is most definitely agreeing with her.

    • J. Preposterice

damn, she has nice skin on her upper chest. Trinny & Susannah called skin like that “virgin ski slope” skin in one of their books and advised showing it off if you had it. I can really see what they meant, here.

    • Crystal

      I think she looks gorgeous.

Will getting pregnant make me as pretty as Zoe Saldana?????

    • FibonacciSequins

She needs more styling. The dress looks better on the model, with the gloves and hat. However, she looks pretty far along so I’m giving her a pass. She’s there, she’s wearing a pretty dress, she had her hair and makeup done. Enough.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Wow, her skin looks luminous, that decollete is especially stunning.

    • MissAmynae

I’m in the minority. To me, she looks very tired, and her face is saying “how much longer until I can stop forcing a smile and get out of these shoes.”

the dress is a resounding “meh.”

    • demidaemon

OK, who let Frankenstein go out on his sewing temp jobs again? This is the second dress in a row that looks to have his hallmark all over the construction. NOT GOOD.

    • livesarah

Pregnancy is being really kind to her features, softened them just a little. I don’t know if she feels amazing but she looks lovely. The dress is fine.

    • Kristi Puckett Carrillo

Pregnant lady gets a pass. Especially when she looks this damn good.

    • GemFemme

I love the dress on the runway with all the accessories but it seems to lose any dynamic when by itself. I think part of her style missfires during the Guardians poledance is due to the changing contours of her body and how to dress it. She’s been beanpole thin for so long now, it’ll take some time to figure out what makes her gorgeous new body look fantastic.

    • d4divine

She is pregnant with twins…all access fashion pass for 6 months

    • E. D.

It’s a little long for her.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      The length is really wrong!

    • https://plus.google.com/+FrankLithiumz/posts Frank Lithium

Not even mentioning the texture, the shape is just terrible.
