Mindy Kaling in Tadashi Shoji at the Fox Summer TCA All-Star Party

Posted on July 21, 2014

This is our second BRAVA of the day. So far, this week looks to be shaping up pretty nicely on the celeb-style front.

We will, of course, be forced to eat those words soon.

Mindy-Kaling-Tadashi-Shoji-Fox-Summer-TCA-All-Star-Party-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (6)We seem to constantly be disappointed with her style choices, but this is pretty close to perfect. In fact, the only issue is that it’s a skosh too tight, but the shape, the color, the length and even the black lace are all doing fantastic things for her. She tends to look better, to our eyes, in dresses than in separates. This shows off her figure without breaking it up into parts, which is a consideration for shorter women with curves. And the shape of the neckline with the little cap almost-sleeves looks fantastic on her. We’re even on board with her accessories choices. Loving the big jewelry paired with relatively simple shoes and bag. The only thing we’re not sure on is that lip color. We think it could work for her with the right outfit, but we’re not loving the bright red and bright green as a pairing.

  • @Biting Panda

This is the best she’s looked in a while. Her makeup appears less than 12 hours old, her dress is sweet and a bit sexy. Her jewelery is fab. Well done, Miss Lady.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Yes! on makeup. Lately she’s been rather *ahem* “sweaty” looking. Her makeup person was doing her no favors.

Having read her book, I like her SO much, so I feel so happy when she looks lovely, as she does, here. LOVE that dress on her….. but would have gone another way on the lip color……

  • Kent Roby

The backdrop agrees: she’s a fox! Great look for Mindy.

  • J. Preposterice

oooh. I wish I could wear that neckline because damn.

  • Sarah

I love the dress! Don’t even mind the lippy, but my personal quibble is with the bracelet, which looks too large for her wrist. Like, she’d be constantly having to adjust it to make sure that big honkin’ daisy was on top.

  • deelup

This dress looks like it was made for her figure. Lovely.

  • Anna

I’m not 100% sure if that’s her red, but overall this a personal best for Mindy.

    • kimmeister

My immediate reaction was that it was a little too orange-y for her coloring.

      • Anna

Yes, it’s looking a little harsh with the green.

  • gabbilevy

Hello Minds, Don’t mind me. I’m just stealing your dress now. Ta!

    • kimmeister

I read “Minds” as the plural of “mind” and was all confused at first.

      • Cousin_Rose

Yep, thought she was talking to us :))

      • DebbieLovesShoes

        Me too! Totally confused! Ha.

  • Kate Andrews

Nice, and I even like her toenails. Cute!

  • R.A.

Excellent neckline, sleeves and colour. The makeup still leaves something to be desired. I am personally invested in the saga of her red carpet makeup.

    • PastryGoddess

Ohhh do you have stories made up about her previous tragic makeup results? I think we would all like to hear them 🙂

      • Kate Andrews

I think someone’s spritzing baby oil on her face at the last second. That’s what it looks like most of the time. Better in this picture. Mindy deserves better!

      • R.A.

I alternate between two scenarios. In the first one, her MUA is her close friend and trusted confidant, so much so that Mindy doesn’t feel the need to view her red carpet photos on TLO the following day. “These selfies are all the proof I need that you’re the best in the biz,” she’ll say lovingly as she pats her friend/MUA on the shoulder and passes her the bong.

In the other scenario, there is something wrong with the brightness settings on both her smartphone and laptop. Because I simply do not understand how one could view these photos with the proper monitor settings and conclude “that is my ideal face.”

        • demidaemon

My version is much darker and has all kinds of betrayals and backstabbings until two weeks ago, when they decided the guy wasn’t worth it and made up.

          • R.A.

Good for them. He never is.

          • formerlyAnon

More than that. It is usually ALL his [passive agressive or just dumb bozo] fault.

  • Jennifer Bober

That color is fabulous on her and the dress is really working.

  • Qitkat

Mindy looks very pretty here. But I am not a fan of the deep orangey-red lipsticks she seems to love. I think more subtle tones would be more flattering.

    • decormaven

I like the mani color; not sure if that would be too light for the lips, though. Something more in that family than the orange-y tone.

      • gefeylich

Yes! Exactly what I was thinking – a deep orchid or mauve would have been much better with this dress. Clashy, but prettier. The tomato red lip is wrong here. Otherwise: attagirl. She looks great.

  • suzq

Tadashi Shoji continues to be the zen master of dressing real women. Designers, do not expect the same results. Your attempts at lace overlays are bound to look cheap. This man is a professional.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

To my mind, his greatest skill is his thoughtfulness. You don’t his track record on accident.

    • hyperionic

I think the lace here is kind of ugly though. Those blotchy cut-outs aren’t really working.

      • Lower L

I’ve gotten tired of his lace treatments lately. I have a dress by him that I love, and that I look fabulous in (and my abs, hips, and thighs are not what you’d call “lean”), so I want to buy more of his work, but in the past year or so, his offerings have seemed kind of meh.

  • Danielle

That color is her best friend. More, more!!

  • enchanted216

The fit is better than usual, for her. The color is PERFECT for her complexion! So pretty 🙂

  • Gatto Nero

Great dress for her. Agree that the lip color needs softening.

  • spirit52

Her looks very nice…except for the lipstick!

  • kimmeister

I love the dress and think it’s a great color for her, but I’m not sold on the shoulder/sleeve treatment being the best for her figure.

    • SugarSnap108

I’m not sold on that, either. The neckline is slightly different on the model, and not just b/c of fit — It’s broader with more of a scalloped cut. I think that would be better on Mindy, since it would make her shoulders look broader. But I think she looks pretty fabulous as it is.

      • kimmeister

Good catch on the necklines actually being slightly different. I agree that the model’s would be better.

  • ecallaw1977

I like everything except the mesh quality of the green fabric. I think it would have looked a lot cleaner if it didn’t have that.

    • myandyleigh

That’s my big nit to be picked as well. That mesh quality makes the fabric look cheap, which I’m sure it isn’t. But other than that I think she looks smashing.

  • I just can’t like anything that has black lace on it. Sorry, black lace! It’s not really your fault that you’ve been so overused that I don’t want to look at you ever again, but here we are!

  • Jennifer Schiller

Love this on her! But yes, would like to see it without the red lip.

  • Lovely…but Mindy, dear, just a bit of a suggestion…find a good brassiere shop and have them fit you properly. Your current brassiere is not hauling the girls up where they need to be. That’s all..

    • kimmeister

They look to be about halfway between her shoulder and elbow to me, which is where they should be. They just look really close to her waistline because she is super short-waisted.

      • Point taken. I also didn’t notice she’s looking a bit hunched down and pitched forward which would make a difference. I need to take longer in observation.

        • kimmeister

Yes, her posture needs work for sure!

          • AthenaJ

She should have my mother screeching at her just off camera: “I am going to shove a rod down your back if you don’t STAND. UP. STRAIGHT!!!!
Of course when she wasn’t around I went right back to slouching…

  • I don’t even mind the colour of the lipstick so much as the application – sort of looks like when old ladies can’t quite find their lips any more.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Don’t care that this is off-season; Mindy, buy one in every jewel tone. Then come to my house for cocktails, just because.

  • SewingSiren

I love everything except the busy busy background. She looks great in this color and silhouette. Also love the usage of lace and bling.

  • Ashleigh

Personal best…now…I agree with comments below about the “sweaty” look…

  • FibonacciSequins

The ONLY thing I don’t like is her lip color. I love this dress on her. Maybe one size bigger and tailored would be better, but she still looks really good.

  • mjude

she looks great, to bad about the lip color

  • Yoshio

This is a definite win for her. Kudos to Shoji-sensei for creating something pretty, flattering and comfortable.

  • teensmom99

I love Mindy so much that I am sad when her choices do not work for her. And I sometimes think she dresses well for life but not for the runway–she takes fashion dares and makes them work when she’s in motion. So since I love her so much, I am thrilled to see her in Tadashi Soji looking so great.

  • SugarSnap108

Her MUA continues to fail her, but the dress is darn near perfect. The color is fabulous.

  • LJCdoc

    Yes! She looks amazeballs!

  • Anne Elliot

    the dress is nice
her makeup is tragic as always

  • PastryGoddess

I was fully prepared to rip the black lace overlay to shreds, but alas, it really does look fantastic on her. It’s body con without being obvious about it

  • MilaXX

can she just hired whoever takes her IG pictures as her official photographer? Once again this looks better there than here.

  • frannyprof

I love that neckline and the lace detail up near her face/neck. Perfect! The best part is that you can tell she knows she looks great. Her smile says it all.

  • Lily

Attagirl, Mindy, from one hourglass girl to the next. Knees in, skirt lengths to the knee, and tucked in at all the right placed. Brava, indeed!

  • alyce1213

I don’t really love the dress because I’m so tired of lace overlay and all, but it’s beautiful on her, the silhouette is perfect. She can really wear that color.

  • As Tim Gunn said to a fellow designer of mine on PR Season 9, “Nina has some serious doubts about your taste level”. Ditto here!

  • crash1212

Everything here is working except that lip color. Not sure in what universe somebody thought that worked….alas. Other than that – she looks great.

  • formerlyAnon

Her makeup is . . . better. I am not on board with “good.” Not for an event at which at least half of your job is to be photographed.

But she does look much more comfortable and the dress is more flattering than usual.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

    That is definitely her dress.

  • Lisalady161

Great shape, great color, great lace. Nasty makeup and limp hair. Find a better face/head person, Mindy dear.

  • marlie

The lip color is a little bright, but that dress looks great on her, and I don’t even particularly like the colors together (a bit too holiday party). But Tadashi Shoji did right by her.

  • Laura Abrahamsen

Would actually like the neckline to be a deeper wide V; from the current start down in diagonals to the tip of the black lace in line with her chin. I think the negative space would open up her face more, and provide an opportunity for a great necklace. Keep everything else the same.

  • Krista Nielsen

The dress is absolutely fantastic, but I never like her makeup. It seems her eyes are always too heavy and the lip color is always off. She’s got beautiful skin, she needs someone who knows how to treat it right!

  • Imasewsure

Love everything except the makeup and the earrings… mostly the makeup. The dress and look overall is fantastic though

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I like her lip color! Her dress is FABULOUS on her. But she is on my awesome list so I’m going to be incredibly biased in her favor every time.

  • Joanna

I have also learned this lesson recently – I have a similar shape to Mindy (just bustier), and I used to avoid dresses, but the more form-fitting they are, the better they look, I’ve found. I also thought I was too short to handle chunkier jewelry, but utilized properly, it helps direct the eye away from the areas I am less comfortable with. Looking good, Mindy!

  • elemspbee

this has got to be personal best for her. Love the pink nail polish.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Mindy really comes close to a WERQ in this-love the shape of the dress and the color on her, and her accessories. My only quibble is the lipcolor, but overall she is earning uncle TLo’s brava.

  • That is absolutely her dress. I would like it to be my dress, too.

  • cocohall

I love Mindy, but I’ve come to associate Tadashi Shoji so strongly with Octavia Spencer, that it is hard for me to look at this and not think it would look better on Octavia. The silhouette is good, but it just seems a bit mature for our Mindy. As for the makeup, girl just looks a skosh drunk. As in she applied her lipstick after a cocktail or three. Which makes me love her all the more. She seems to always put the priority on having fun, and what’s not to like about that?

  • KT

This is significantly better on her, though there are still a few missteps. I think the sleeves are unflattering (on every body type, btw), and I wish they were a short sleeve length instead. The bag looks a little too daytime, and that lip color is definitely wrong. Otherwise, she looks great.

  • smayper

That color with her beautiful skin….LOVE. I’m really pale and ginger and LOVE that color…but it’s made for her.

  • Drunken Housewife

Fabulous color on her! I want that dress so much now.

  • P M

YES! Mindy, I knew you could do it! Well done!

  • kategs

I love this on her but I wish she’d stand up straighter? She always looks hunkered down as though she were trying to disappear.

  • nannypoo

Pretty shape, style and color on her, but in the close-up the fabric looks pretty cheap.

  • demidaemon

I’m just glad it looks like, for the most part, she and her MUA are still amicable, as she doesn’t look like she got hit by the angry make-up train. Love the dress on her.

  • surfergirl70

She looks great – my only quibble is that I want to tell her to stop smiling with the corners of her mouth turned down.

  • anotherkate

Oh, she looks lovely! It’s amazing, if you had just shown me the dress on the model, I would have shouted “PASS!” But on a woman with some curves, and darker skin? That dress is killa! I think it really goes to show how well Tadashi Shoji knows women’s bodies–that dress was made for a woman with T&A. It doesn’t sing at all on the model. (I feel this way a lot about Dolce & Gabbana’s work, too. A dress that does nothing for me on the runway suddenly looks like magic on Sofia Vergara).

  • MRC210

The color and shape are right for her but it’s a size too small. Lines and wrinkles where a dress is being stretched ruin the
look for me. So close, though.

  • understateddiva

That color on her is EVERYTHING. Not sold on the shape of it – I’m short-waisted too, and would never attempt this style, but I like that she doesn’t play it safe.

  • evave2

She looks really good here. Curious, why is this not a WERQ? She looks really really good here.

  • SuzyQuzey

Like the dress, EXCEPT for those almost-cap sleeves. Those are terrible on women with big upper arms. i know this all too well.

  • CatLady

I want that dress! Mindy looks awesome.

  • quiltrx

    Pretty dress and pretty lady!

  • MM4321

Love me some Mindy. But . . . why must EVERYthing she wears be skin tight. I suspect she is nowhere near as heavy as she makes herself look. One size up and she’d look amazing.

    • Alloy Jane

The problem is that she is only slightly hippy and getting things that fit her in the bust as well as hips is probably a huge pain because dresses that are perfectly fitted on her bust just barely fit across her hips. So any dress that is not A-line is either a skosh too tight, or she goes up a size and has to get the bodice tailored. It’s either that or she’s one of the many women who enjoys the chacha look.

  • Alloy Jane

Assholes of the fashion industry and celebrity fashion victims, THIS is how you do sheer lace. This look is fabulous and I love everything but the shoes. They look like they couldn’t decide between being a sandal or being a peep toe and the compromise was a little bit of both and none of the recommendations of either.

  • livesarah

She looks pretty magnificent, which she doesn’t usually achieve. Definitely worth a ‘brava’.

  • Skippymom1

I can’t get past how horribly she slouches. [See pic #3] Yes, the dress is cute, but it would look a helluva’ lot better if she stood upright. She is reviewed and applauded as the smartest, funniest writer actress around but it makes me sad to see the “lack of love for myself” posture she puts forth.

  • gitchygitchymama

the lace appliques that are hugging her boobies just seems wrong.

  • LibKat

She looks terrific. Wonderful color with her skin tone. Part of my reaction may be that for once it doesn’t look like she lined her eyes with a charcoal briquette.

  • melanie0866

I wish her makeup gays could figure out how to make her less shiny.

  • Mrs. O

I would like that dress for my very own, please. In a blue. Thank you.

  • what i love especially, other than the sumptuous color, is the way it refers to indian design without going full on bollywood. that’s a good signature style for her. exotic but modern. and could i see that bracelet again? SWIPE…now you it. now you don’t!

  • Jacob Bowen

When Mindy gets it right it makes my heart warm…love her.

  • Sweetvegan

” Fox Summer TCA All-Star Party held at the Soho House in West Hollywood” Really? From the chewed-up floor, it looks like it was held at an abandoned bar that was last renovated in 1980.
    Mindy looks great!

  • JynxTheCat

OOOh a waist and everything. Way to destumpify! Very nice effort indeed.

  • Gorgeous. Although I don’t know about the shoes, but I agree, she’s got it all together here.

  • Claire Keaveney

In what universe is this not way too small for her? I’m here to tell you, that cannot be comfortable.
