Karen Gillan in Ellery at the Disney & ABC Television Group’s TCA Summer Press Tour 2014

Posted on July 16, 2014

Apparently the world has been waiting for boring old sleeves to go away so we could all start sporting our exciting new armpit collars.

Sweetie, you’re adorable – and your makeup never looked better – but this outfit looks ridiculous. Especially for sitting down in front of a crowd. We don’t know what’s worse; those awful things hanging off her shoulders or the fact that the whole thing looks flimsy, ill-fitted and wrinkled. We think this may be the worst idea for a garment we’ve seen in a good long time. Definitely the worst idea we’ve seen all year. It’s hard not to look at it and think that Heidi Klum needs to be kissing someone goodbye while Tim Gunn looks on sadly.

And the shame of it is, the skirt’s really cute.

    • Shug

The skirt is adorable but that top…brb, going to the ER because my eyes are bleeding.

    • RussellH88

She looks great if I take my glasses off.

    • Thomas

God, she’s so cute. It’s hard to tell her that she looks ridiculous.

      • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

This is going to sound really odd, but I do medical advocacy for sexual assault victims, and I’ve seen a TON of young women with that color mani in the hospital lately. Apparently, it’s very on-trend. I love it.

        • KateShouldBeWorking

My hat is off to you, I can’t imagine the emotional fortitude necessary for that line of work. Thank you.

That said, what an uncommon way to stay on top of current trends.

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

God bless you for what you do; it’s just too bad that you have to do it. Anyway…..I agree about the nail color, it’s the cutest thing about this ensemble other than her sweetly perky face & hair. My daughter is getting married in August and my dress is periwinkle. Don’t want to overdo the color, though, so I may go with an opalescent white or silver for the nails.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234087433 Jen Freeman

I love the color too! I just wish it wasn’t so poorly applied, you can see the thin spots and streaks.

        • WendyD

She does her nails herself a lot of the time, I’m fairly sure. Amy Pond’s nails were totally Karen throughout her run on Doctor Who.

          • CT14

She should do them better, then.

I like the color, but the execution is crappy.

            • CT14

Now I feel crappy. Her hands look better than most star(let)s’ hands and nails.

But one more coat, please. If you’re going out and going to be photographed, do it right.

    • thecitysleeps

Awww she’s cute as a button, and I love her nail polish and shoes, but that shirt is a NO, as much as her unfortunately, ill-conceived sitcom.

    • hughman

They aren’t even sleeves. They’re like carports for your armpits.

      • FuhUgh

        Armports.

      • Audrey Lee

I was leaning towards Car-Pits myself. It’s awful.

      • Kent Roby

        Pit stops.

      • Twigg

        Pitports.

      • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

        Surfbort.

        • hughman

          Flawless.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Love the ring. The clothes and shoes, not at all.

    • Gatto Nero

      “Armpit collars.” Thanks for that.
I can’t think of anyone who’d look good in those starched wings. And the whole ensemble looks random.
      Plus the ubiquitous “Nudist” sandals.

      • smayper

SW should have issued only a certain number of those sandals to RC/stars. Like a limited edition (the rest of the hoi polloi could buy as many as they could afford, e.g. none for most of us). Because every time I see them now I want to throw them in a fire.

    • LibKat

Who did that to your blouse, Amy Pond?

    • mmebam

Just… Can somebody run across the street to J.Crew and get her another blouse? Please? Jesus take the wheel!

    • Karen Belgrad

Flying Nun Sleeves… never a good idea.

      • Jangle57

That was my thought exactly! Sister Bertrille would be so into this….

      • ankali

I was just thinking that between the sleeves and the enormous collar, it looks like her shoulders are wearing a wimple.

    • Janet B

      Loving her hair.

    • http://vispreeve.tumblr.com/ Den Milano

Girl, that’s not your blouse. Give it to someone who has two more heads.

    • random_poster

Designer Alert! Neither Karen nor Gillian can pull off those “sleeves”, so stop trying to make them happen.

    • MilaXX

I would buy this if she had a shirt on that didn’t look like a Gordon Gatrell original. Hair/makeup and the jewelry/mani are adorable, but that shirt is just awful and focus pulling.

      • frannyprof

Gordon Gartrell!!! Maybe Denise Huxtable made that shirt for her.

        • MilaXX

          Looks like it.

    • housefulofboys

Sheesh, that is one ugly shirt/blouse. She looks pretty cute otherwise, but the blouse pulls all the focus into ugly.

On another note, because I’m kind of obsessed with nail polish, she needs to fire her manicurist because her fingernails look terrible, she needed at least another coat to cover, and the edges need cleaning up. If she did them herself, kudos but she needs to practice more. I do like the color combination between the mani and pedi.

      • Grumpy Girl

Thank you for saying that about her polish, because that was my impression, too. And I love that periwinkle color. (I have it on my toes right now, that’s how much I love it.)

    • frannyprof

It looks like her shirt wants to fly off her body. Literally. And the whites don’t match.

      • housefulofboys

If they are both whites, then yes that is the worst mis-match I can remember seeing. I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt and seeing the shirt as pale blue, but now that you have mentioned it, I think you’re right.

        • MilaXX

I’m getting pale blue on the top as well. I think that’s why she went with the polish color and the jewlery

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I love the color of her nails, but that is one sloppy manicure and it needs another coat of polish. Such a cute face and hair, too bad about the “blouse”.

      • housefulofboys

Ha! Like minds, I just wrote the same thing!

    • unbornfawn

That is one awful blouse. The collar is too big and looks like it is about to eat her alive. Those sleeve collars are just silly.

    • Anna

Those two different whites are hurting my eyes. Hair is adorable, shame about the haphazardly applied polish (I’m choosing not to look at the outfit any more than I have to because I can’t even with the whites and the armpit collars).

      • MilaXX

        The top is light blue

        • Anna

Must be my monitor, although I can see more of a bluish tinge in the second photo.

        • mjude

omg, you are right I thought it was all white too!

    • KinoEye

Let’s hope and/or pray that armpit collars don’t become A Thing. But a really weird part of me wonders what they would look like with miniature armpit ties. Seems like that would be the next innovation in the exciting world of Armpit Couture.

      • Kitten Mittons

Which could lead to armpit bowties, armpit cravats, armpit turtlenecks (turtlepits??), etc.

I’m curious, as well, but I don’t know that I have the digestive fortitude to watch it happen.

        • Anna

Coming soon to a windchime near Amber Heard! The cravats in particular.

        • ohbear1957

          Dickey! Dickie! Dicky!

          • Kitten Mittons

I’m trying to picture what all these different garments might actually look like. That one might take the cake.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

It also looks like she did her own nails.

    • mjude

WTF is with the shirt. she is cute & I have no idea who is.

    • SewingSiren

The blouse is just way too big for her.

    • decormaven

[Sung in Slim Whitman register]“Una paloma blanca…”

      • rh33

        Kudos for Slim Whitman reference!

    • Kbear

I keep thinking of the TV show – “The Flying Nun”

    • alyce1213

It looks like the dental assistant put the spit catcher bib on backwards.
Her head has never looked better, though.

    • Sarah

Heh – shoulder collars made me think of someone with three heads wearing this blouse. They’d be so glad to have it! “King Ghidorah goes on a job interview.”

      • MilaXX

        Zaphod Beeblebrox?

        • Sarah

Hee. He can go out for a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster after the interview!

    • mshesterp

Is her hair short or just pulled back? Because if it’s short, it’s giving me dangerous ideas about cutting my hair, which I’ve never had that short (but I do have a widow’s peak, which might sway the decision…) Her hair is adorable!

      • alyce1213

Short, she’s been growing out a totally shaved head.

      • 25or6to4

It’s short. She shaved off all of her glorious hair for a role (Nebula in Marvel’s upcoming “Guardians of the Galaxy”) and it suits her so well… So jealous!

    • Kitten Mittons

If that were just a sleeveless blouse with a normal collar, I would be swooning. Boring, maybe, but clean and crisp.
Her head is loverly. Cute as a button.

    • Tee

Everything is cute but for that set of napkins trying to pass as a blouse. Maybe some well placed napkin rings would help? No, nothing would help!

    • Violentcello

Her hair is SO cute. She looks darling. (I’ve decided to ignore the shirt and just go with “darling.” Life’s easier that way.)

    • Ann VerWiebe

Yep. That shirt is just plain ugly! And, because the skirt is white, the color is off, too.

    • appliquer

LOL – oh, that whole outfit is horrible.

    • 25or6to4

Her makeup and hair are so perfect that I don’t even care about the rest of her look.

    • tarqueeny

I like it. She looks like she’s made an effort for a change.

    • Julie Chase

Her hair and face are so cute, WHY sleeves, WHYYYY?!

    • Judy_J

She needs to find a better manicurist, too. Maybe it’s the way the photo reproduced on my screen, but her nails look like they could use another coat of polish.

      • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I saw that, too – and it made me feel better about better about my polishing skills. But as you say, someone who gets paid to do it, should do a better job.

I really want that color, though.

        • Judy_J

I have some blue just that color on my toes right now. The polish I have is a Sally Hansen color that may already be discontinued because I got it at Big Lots! It’s a great summer color.

          • Swiftlytiltingplanet

            Good to know. Thanks!

    • bunkee

Jesus! she going to need and an emergency bag of O neg to go with that Cyanosis, although if all else fails that frock looks like a chic shroud so what the hell!!!

    • marlie

Aside from the terrible fit issues, this is another almost all-white look that could stand to have some contrasting color somewhere other than on her nails. But her hair and makeup look great. She’s SO pretty from the neck up.

    • Danielle

Living for that nail color, though.

    • PinkyK

She looks adorable in the pixie haircut!
The top is a disaster but the skirt is a great shape and looks great on her. I only wish it was a different color; it seems to make her legs look even paler than they are.

    • SistaT

I think I’m too much of a fangirl. I just see “Amy Pond!” and automatically think she looks delightful. I just love her.
But, okay … it looks like she just came from the gynecologist’s office. Like she tucked that smock thingy they give you into her skirt and called it a day.

    • JauntyJohn

I think she looks breezy and chic.

Obviously she wanted something with a little edge, and yes, one *could* say that the shoulder style is slightly reminiscent of Sister Batrill’s starched wimple, but somehow for me she’s pulling the whole thing off.
Love the skirt — and she has always favored those offbeat nail colors. I think it’s really working for her here.

    • Capt. Renault

I want to support creativity and innovation wherever I find it, but… no.

    • clatie

When her mouth is closed, doesn’t she look like young Shirley Jones? I LOVE Shirley Jones, so this is a compliment.

      • SewingSiren

        Absolutely yes.

      • conniemd

Yes she does, despite the brown hair. I’m a musical lover, so I remember a young Shirley Jones from Carousel and Oklahoma. Buyt what is really freaking me out is that she also looks like Miley Cyrus.

    • redhead with tattoos

LOVE that nail color. A lot.

      • conniemd

Yes and it is beautiful with that ring I want to grab right off her finger.

    • quiltrx

But I think we have to admit these shoulder flaps are a “thing”–I think this is at least the 4th time we’ve seen some variation of this. And we also need to rise up as one giant Bitter Kitten (not unlike Voltron) and crush this nasty trend. “Sleeves OR armpits, not both.”
We can crush those stupid shoes while we’re at it.

      • demidaemon

Voltron seems appropriate, given that it was made of cats. We’ll just be the bitchier, snarkier version who crushes evil designers and trends.

    • KT

How disappointing. She’s so gorgeous, she has some GREAT hair and makeup here, and then a totally blah outfit to go with it. I totally agree that the skirt is really cute, and she could easily work some kind of interesting top to go with it. Interesting, not experimental-to-the-point-of-crazy, as seen here. Also, COLOR, HONEY. GIVE IT TO US.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I love that her fingers and toes don’t match, and as my ankles currently resemble pink balloons I am in awe of her dainty little ankles above those insubstantial sandals. But that dress… yikes.

    • demidaemon

She is adorable, but that bodice (especially those things on her shoulders) look bad on the step and repeat and even worse sitting down. It’s giving her hunchback, which I know she does not have. Really, really bad.

    • Starts with K

Please no more Nudist sandals!!!! They are becoming their own cliche.
And please no more armpit collars.

    • BlairBear

I could kind of like the top if the flaps were smaller in an editorial but not in real life

    • Richard

If you are going to have crazy sleeves, then you can’t have a crazy neckline. That giant collar makes those sleeves even worse than they already are, because it’s a whole lot of “wtf” in one small area.

    • FibonacciSequins

Cuffs sewn to the shoulders are no substitute for sleeves.

Karen looks adorable with a pixie cut.

    • Fräulein K.

I think it was a mistake to leave the top three buttons of the blouse open. This could at least come closer to working if the collar wasn’t sprawling all over the place like that. It probably looks like a perfectly conventional shirt collar when done up, which would balance out the weirdness of the sleeve… thingies.

    • what not

I actually like tricky, but it has to be applied with restraint: Here, either the sleeve things (well, not those sleeve things–both placement and stiffness are odd with the rest of the blouse) or the collar, but not both. They’re like Transformers, combining to make something bigger and floppier than each could achieve alone.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

      Great hair

    • nannypoo

Worst manicure ever, but great hair.

    • Mothra

White isn’t always a great color for gingers to begin with and that top is an abomination. Her hair looks great though!

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I dunno guys. The skirt is flimsy too. There is not a thing she is wearing – including the shoes – that doesn’t look like it could just fall away at any minute.

    • Jacob Bowen

Currently we’re living in a “Nudist” colony…those shoes are SO dumb. Practical and easy to pair with outfits, yes, but dumb.

    • CT14

She should spring for a real manicure.

She almost makes this outfit work, with her sheer adorableness, but armpit collars are auf worthy.

    • GeoDiva

I am so over those Stuart Weitzman’s shoes!

    • NinjaCate

      Her manicure looks terrible.

    • StrandedFashionista

If only The Silence could get us to forget that top even existed.

    • formerlyAnon

      Kinda low-budget sci-fi.
      But she’s a cutie.

    • Izzy_Gremlin

Really, I think the problem with the top isn’t the collar and shoulder wings, but with the body of the garment; you have very architectural details on what amounts to a sack of a blouse, and the lack of proper tailoring through the body makes the overall thing look silly instead of artistic. Just my $.000002 worth. Also, totally agree that the top and skirt don’t belong in the same universe together – straight lines or curves, white or near-white; pick one or the other.

Aside from that, I think she looks great. Her nails look better than mine, so I can’t criticize.

    • livesarah

Ellery is another Australian designer whose mere continued existence I simply cannot fathom. Really, truly hideous.

    • evave2

That top looks like some crazed Dr Who fan scissored her sleeves for a memento. ALSO the skirt gives her a pouch She has beautiful makeup and quite nice hair, but the clothes are wackadoodle.

    • Dino Bonačić

      She’s so beautiful. WOW.

    • CommentsByKatie

      She looks like Captain Eo.

    • suzinrva

I think it supposed to be Science Fiction-y? But tricky origami clothing should not wrinkle! Or highlight the pits.

    • Tami from Seattle

      LOVE that ring!

    • Sara Brams-Miller

      She really is adorable.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I love her hair and the nail color. Both are exceptionally flattering.

    • Mona_Visa

Student Nurse aboard the Starship Enterprise.

    • Bernadette

Yes to the skirt, even a plain scooped-neck tee would have been way better.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Her hair is reminding me of Julie Andrews…who would never wear a weird-ass top like that.

    • gefeylich

Ecch. This is outfit is so her – inappropriately “edgy,” ugly and generally ridiculous. Why does everyone insist on trying to make her a thing? She singlehandedly ruined four years of Doctor Who, and now she’s come over here trying to kill John Cho’s career with an idiotic sitcom called “Selfie.” A world of ugh. And NO.
