Jennifer Lawrence at the Christian Dior Fall 2014 Couture Show

Posted on July 08, 2014

It looks like Miss Jennifer hauled herself out of a pool about an hour ago.

The outfit’s … just okay. Not crazy about the thick, high-waisted skirt, but the top is kind of eye-catching. It doesn’t really feel like her style, though – especially the shoes. Of course, it’s kind of hard to know exactly what her style is because from the second she hit the scene, she was being courted by brands to wear their wares in public. And she doesn’t do the sidewalk promenade thing, like so many other stars her age. Emma Watson, Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley, Kristen Stewart – they all have easily described styles because they’re fairly consistent about it. J Law? We get the impression she just wears what she’s told when she has to but otherwise doesn’t really think about style. Shailene’s famously anti-style too, but we’d argue that her off-the-red-carpet clothes are fairly distinct and consistent in what they’re trying to say.

In other news, that’s a terrible makeup job, the haircut’s not wowing us, and those earrings look cheap – and don’t go with the outfit.

That makeup is so very, very bad.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

And yet the backdrop is so, very very great. :)

Did the makeup artist look at where the photos were to be taken and say jeez, can’t compete with that backdrop, might as well EPICALLY FAIL. ;)

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Suggesting it might have been deliberate seems excessively kind! It looks like two different people did her eyes, and it looks like she’s taken lipstick tips from Andrew Symonds.

          • raeb23

i agree her makeup is bad but i’m liking mostly because this is the last place i thought i’d see an andrew symonds reference!

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I knew there would be bitter kittens who would appreciate an Australian cricket reference!

            • raeb23

lol…i’m a west indian, cricket loving bitter kitten :)

      • Carleenml

I couldn’t even move beyond it. She also looks like she’s been partying. Just a bit.

      • Julie

Poor girl looks like an extra on The Walking Dead.

      • Angela_the_Librarian

Yes, I think she may have looked better without make-up. She seriously looks like she’s suffering with the Flu here.

      • GorgeousThings

IKR? What is WITH the horrible fake-bake makeup at this show?

      • decormaven

Tatum O’Neal in The Bad News Bears.

      • StrandedFashionista

To me the main problem can be traced to the lips. I think she needs a stronger one to compliment how strong her face is.

    • NBG

      Makeup credit: Crayola.

    • smh4748

The summer of too much self tanner on ladystars unfortunately continues. :(

I feel opposite of TLo about the dress–I quite like the skirt portion, but not with that top.

      • Carleenml

Total disconnect in my mind between the top and bottom. Don’t get it.

      • Targettaste

Me too. I think the high waisted silhouette looks great, but the top seems mismatched. Is it the wrong white, or is it silver?

        • SugarSnap108

To me, the skirt and top don’t go together color-wise or fabric-wise. The skirt just seems heavy and a bit stiff for the top. And actually, the shape seems off, too. I’d like a slimmer skirt with that top.

    • DesertDweller79

The makeup is disturbingly bad. What is this, self-tanner? Too much bronzer? Badly applied bronzer? It is so weird, and I don’t like it.

The skirt/top combo looks okay on the model. But, for some reason it looks weird on Ms Lawrence. Perhaps the skirt is a bit lower on the model’s waist?

      • MoHub

I think the model just has more torso length between her boobs and waist than Ms. Jennifer. That’s the problem when you try to put a 6=foot model’s outfit on someone of more or less normal height.

      • Kristin McNamara

I think her *make-up* is bad, yes, but it’s funny to me that so many BKs default to thinking these stars are all abusing self-tanner or spray tans right now. It’s July, guys! For instance: I’m a teacher so I have the summer off, and I have laid outside and read 5 books already in 3 weeks. I am DEFINITELY not the same color as I was when school ended. Sometimes our tans are natural, people!

        • scoobynacks

TLo can tell the difference between a natural tan and the after effects of an orgy with some Oompa Loompas. Self-tanner abuse is rampant and obvious. I’ve seen nobody criticized for it here that didn’t have it coming.

        • CatLady

A natural tan is various tones of brown. Her skin is orange, which only comes from self-tanners.

          • livesarah

And set off by that godawful lipstick. So bad.

    • Candice Jones

i think she pulled that head straight out of 1997

    • James

My eyes, my eyes. What is that make up? I like the skirt, not so much the top, and not with each other.

    • Alyssa

Wow, that makeup is BAD. The only thing I like is the shoes. As far as JLaw’s style, I remember when she first hit the scene and wore Calvin Klein to the Oscars…that was perhaps the best she’s ever looked, IMO.

      • FrigidDiva

Agreed. I think she looks so much better in sleek and simple styles, she really doesn’t pull off these tricky Dior looks at all.

        • Clash D

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – she is NOT a Dior girl. Not. I’m pretty sure Dior knows that by now and both parties can’t wait to part ways when her gig’s up.

          • demidaemon

I don’t know. I could see Dior hanging on tight because she is such a big name and gets their wares out there. She also tends to look sensational in the ads for the brand. However, I am certain JLaw is counting down the days, because I’m certain she and/or her team know how her looks have been received by the public and the media.

    • NMMagpie

For crying out loud… lipstick does come in several very attractive colors. It might do some good to go that route.

    • colleenjanel

What’s most disturbing is that someone probably was paid BIG BUCKS to do that horrific makeup job! WT-EFF?!?!

    • @Biting Panda

I was unaware of the lipstick shortage in Paris. How sad.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        Perhaps we should send help.

      • CakesOnAPlane

It’s gotten so bad, they’re using kindergarten paste in its stead.

    • imperfectlaura

How many meh to awful looks does JLaw need to wear before she realizes (1) her and Dior are not a great combo and (2) her and Rachel Zoe are not a great combo?

      • demidaemon

To be fair, I am certain there are contracts in place setting down the dates as to when the combos can be broken, even though one may want to break the contract earlier than said date.

    • jbontrager78

      That lipstick is especially awful.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

But apart from all that, uncles, how do you really feel? ;)

    • Introspective

so while not an in or out post, OUT.

she needs to fire everyone on her team (hair, makeup and styling), break that dior contract, and do the work to build an actual style.

      • Rhonda Shore

She’s growing out her hair so it’s in that fugly stage and i don’t think it looks awful, but her makeup does and that blouse…

    • Anna

Oh give her a break, she was clearly stranded in the South Pacific for a few weeks and was just rescued that morning.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        I hate when that happens.

      • makeityourself

I think only her head was stranded. The rest of her body is several shades paler.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I miss big hair, simple red halter dress at the Oscars Jennifer. THAT looked like her style. Everything thereafter has looked like somebody “doing her up.” The makeup is bad, the spraytan is a weird pinky orange, and the outfit would be lovely on someone else, but this isn’t her.

      • FibonacciSequins

I suspect it’s airbrushed foundation because in the long shots you can see it’s just on her face and neck. Did they do it in the dark? It’s an awful shade for her skin and a visibly different color than her shoulders and arms. Pinky orange is not her color.

      • Introspective

im back here to say that when i was writing my comment about her need to totally fire everyone and reboot, i was thinking exactly of how fresh, young and beautiful she looked in the red halter (calvin klein?) at the oscars. i guess we all want to know where the hell that jennifer went.

notice how that was maybe 3 yrs ago but right now she looks at least a decade older and dare I say it washed up in these pics above.

        • @Biting Panda

I miss that too, but part of what was radiating off of her, was shock and awe at the newness of it all. She has been on the Super Train to A List status and since that means a whole next level of handlers, decision makers, travel and pole dance, how can she look anything other than “rode hard” ? Bless her heart.

      • fromanotherplanet

Even that bouffant star trek-inspired updo at the Oscars was a mess — made her look like Meg Ryan’s twin sister. She’s aging horribly, and she really has no style. She should just stick to basic silhouettes.

    • Cathy S

I like her hair, and the skirt, and hate everything else.

    • FibonacciSequins

The top is interesting. The skirt ruins the top’s effect-those two pieces don’t belong together. The shoes are hideous. That may be the worst hair and makeup I’ve ever seen on Jennifer. They made her look like a teenager going to a pool party.

    • joancarol

      She looks exhausted.

      • Carleenml

I can’t help it – I’m laughing and mentally putting “exhausted” in quotation marks. (my way of saying I think she looks hungover)

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Definitely. There’s a bit in T.Lo’s book about being hospitalised for “exhaustion”.

    • Garcia Loca

Wow. Her makeup artist is a very mean person.

    • Jessica Freeman

It is too early for my eyes to already be burning. It’s bad. All bad. Make up is the worst offender.

    • MartyBellerMask

      Dentist office bib.

      • kimmeister

Totally this. I like the print on it, but the fact that it’s just a rectangle of fabric being held up by tiny strings can make it look like nothing else.

    • sienna elm

Before I scrolled down I saw the pathway as some sort of strange waist-cape! I’m mildly disappointed that it wasn’t.

Also – I seriously covet those shoes in the red/orange colourway!

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

A waist cape would have made this all OK.

      • ballerinawithagun

Waist cape/train were exactly my thoughts too. Yes, it might have improved the look.
I love the shoes except for the dangerous shape of the heel.

    • Anna

I’m not even noticing the outfit with that awful makeup.

    • evave2

I agree that the waist is designed to make anyone who wears it look thick. And this girl ain’t thick.
Make-up is making her look like somebody else.
      Like the hair.

    • PinkyK

Good god! My hair looks like that and I was in a pool an hour ago!

    • grasshack

the whites clash on the top and skirt –
or is that a white background on the top? (very light grey?)

      • Judy_S

Yes, that’s the thing that struck me, the clashing whitishes so to speak. Also the shoes make one look a bit pigeon-toed.

Maybe that’s why everyone worries about her hair and makeup–they can’t bear to look at the actual clothes…

    • http://www.tweevalleyhigh.com/ Kristina, TweeValleyHigh

      That lipstick is terrible…

    • oat327

She looks like Tan Mom. Who’s even looking at the dress.

    • ashtangajunkie

What the shit is that makeup? Do celebrities use actual makeup artists or just give dollar store palettes to toddlers?

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

“Which lipstick do I want? Why, the one that makes me look like I have hypothermia, of course – it’ll keep me from looking overheated since we’ve just given up on styling my hair against the humidity.”

    • Danielle

The makeup is an absolute travesty. Get this girl some eyeliner and step away from the illuminating bronzer.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

      I like her hair.

I’ll go have another shot of cough syrup now.

    • thecitysleeps

That make up is the worst omg. It’s giving me nightmares. What the fuck! I like the outfit better than Emma’s though.

    • Fannie Wolston

halfsister to Rashida? this is different, kinda liking it, espesh the shoes too (very cool!)

    • ballerinawithagun

If you’re making a top out of a scarf then wrap it like a scarf, leave some flowing ends.

    • SewVintageRooster

I think her hair is very pretty, and it matches the style of the dress, simple and understated. I think it’s a shame the dress blends in with the backdrop runway carpet – who knew this? Blame them. Her body is smokin’ hot, and I think she looks beautiful

    • Liz

It’s pretty clear she doesn’t give a crap about her appearance, which is both admirable and kinda shitty. Like, girl… don’t you realize you look terrible?

    • Shawn EH

And she wants to be back at the pool like yesterday, let’s get this done quick, awright?!

    • Gatto Nero

The only item of interest is the bodice, which would look better with a high-waisted black skirt or pants. Everything else should go, or be reworked. Her lipstick needs more warmth, her hair more style.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She looks so orange. Who did her makeup? Michael Kors?

      • conlakappa

Sherwin-Williams? The people who did J. Lo’s in that pant-dress concoction?

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      I like the shoes.

    • OffToSeeHim

To me she looks like she just hopped out of the spray tanner, not the pool. It’s a shame, because she’s such a beautiful girl, and she’s being pulled in so many different directions.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I like the shoes and I like the bag but the rest is eminently forgettable, including her hair & makeup. Not that she cares, mind you.

    • crash1212

Worst make-up ever. Looks like she hired JLo’s bronzer. Surprisingly, I don’t hate this Dior, although the back is off-putting. Love the shoes, but not necessarily on her.

    • Nika E

That girl needs some false lashes like ASAP, among other things, like a whole new outfit. I would rather her show up in sweats and a tee than this crap that “x” throws her in. She never looks comfortable or confident in her clothes. She looms lkke she’s thinking “stand here, dont wobble in these shoes! They said shoulders back and hand on my hips. Ok, im doing it!” Sad situation. Homegirl is famoud enough to wear she can do what thw hell she wants. Go a pair Jen! Wear what u want!

    • nannypoo

I like her hair, but that makeup is just awful. I like the outfit a lot, but it doesn’t look like her.

    • eandh99

the top also gives her total sideboob, it’s more of an apron really. she ditched this outfit, put on a silver mini and went to the after party with Mrs Thor looking way better

    • Sam Smith

      I luv the shoes.

    • MilaXX

Outfit is okay. Certainly not the worse Dior she’s worn. Hair is okay. Makeup is horrible, earrings just okay.

      • marlie

I completely agree. And it’s a shame that that’s the most we can say about a Dior ensemble.

    • http://www.chifleschips.com Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

That top is 2 dinner napkins tacked together. The rest of it has that “Just pick something…I don’t care..really” look.

    • SugarSnap108

When I was in 7th grade, in 1989, my friend Michelle routinely wore that same lipstick. And I used to say, “Girl, no.” As a 12-year-old, in 1989.

    • marlie

I sort of like the dress, but I hate the strap that cuts diagonally across her foot. Her haircut is cute for anything other than the red carpet. But there’s absolutely no excusing that makeup. The eyeshdow and the lipstick completely obliterate her features.

      • kimmeister

The only person I’ve seen who can pull off that particular diagonal shoe strap is Emma Roberts. These are her shoes, and no one else’s.

    • ShaoLinKitten

I inherently love her, but agree with TLo about her lack of definable style. She has stated that she doesn’t really care about or have a deep understanding of fashion, and it shows. She wears what she’s told, and probably doesn’t argue if she’s given an outfit that doesn’t suit her. And this makeup is TERRIBLE. It either makes her look tired or does nothing to hide the fact that she’s tired. I do like the hair, though. It’s growing in nicely.

      • MilaXX

The hair is assisted by pieces. Last time she was on Fallon she brought out a piece.

        • ShaoLinKitten

Gotta watch that interview. She would pull out her extensions on Fallon.

    • MissusBee

No doubt the purse contains a Dior docket that she and her makeup and style team use to punch in and out of every gig. Such is the level of enthusiasm I’m seeing here.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Good shoes. That’s all I have.

    • Janet B

Looks as if she just got out of the pool.
Her hair looks dry, her skin a bit pink and her makeup barely there – except for the waterproof eyeliner.

    • Lily

Guuuuuuurl. That is not your anything. Return to “go” and please start over.

    • Paula Pertile

      Love the shoes though.

    • nycfan

Note how a leather jacket and chance to goof around instead of model improves everything for JLaw: http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s–amEOZDkd–/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/y5zhgoqhalfludqb8svh.jpg

    • ThaliaMenninger

She needs to go to Amsterdam or Copenhagen or somewhere and just wear what she wants long enough to figure out her style. At the moment, she looks like a member of the ski team who won a gold medal or something and got clothes thrown at her for her press appearances after the medal. Huge disconnect between the girl under the clothes and the clothes.

    • formerlyAnon

All that is true. But she’s cute and young and if I met her over drinks I’d be thinking “what a pretty girl.” Hopefully she’ll learn to do better before she *needs* to do better.

    • http://cakesandcakesvintage.blogspot.com cakesandcakesvintage

I actually really like the outfit, but how did whoever did her makeup make such a beautiful woman look so very, very bad? She looks like she’s dying of something.

    • melanie0866

Her face and neck are so much darker than her shoulders. Weird. And bless her heart, her legs are all bruised. Was she moving furniture all weekend?

    • kittentoes

Borrowed J Lo’s makeup gun, hunh?

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

I think the weird dress looks better on her than the model. That’s something at least!

    • Tracy_Flick

      I can’t decide if she’s employing Pamela Anderson’s makeup artist, or Snooki’s.

    • d4divine

Yeah…she doesn’t look so great here. I think she really doesn’t care, she’s just playing along…barely. In an odd way, I kinda like her for that….

    • conniemd

In the first photo my eyes thought that the sidewalk was her dress. I couldn’t see the pencil skirt as it looked like one continuous white and I was thinking what a horrendous balloon of a skirt she has on.

    • fromanotherplanet

What’s up with her legs? Serving crawling in a dark crack den realness. I won’t even discuss what’s going on with her face. I just can’t. I simply cannot and I will not.

      • suzq

She could have wrapped her ankles in electrical tape like the model did.

    • suzq

No. The outfit, hair and make up just made a pretty woman look blah. None of that is good. This look sure ain’t sellin’ Dior!

    • MitzyG

I have those earrings. Dior Costume Jewelry, not very cheap. She got a better dress than poor Emma Watson. Also, Walking Dead lips.

      • Carleenml

I just took a quick scroll through the TLo main page and saw — or didn’t see — lips. They’re all washed out and dead and whoever decided that was “in” this season needs to be hunted down.

    • SewingSiren

      Pretty and seasonally appropriate.

    • Dagney

She is a gorgeous young woman, but I think her stylist, hairdresser, and makeup artist all hate her.

    • Lily

I think they were trying to go for a bold eye with a nude lip but failed in executing it. I think that look works better if the eye makeup is not this harsh looking. She looks like a teen girl getting used to doing her own makeup. Harsh eyeliner with some light, shimmery shadow, overly bronzed skin, awkward brows and a lip color that could be pretty but only makes her look washed out here.

    • P M

Oh. My. God. I didn’t think it was possible to make her look bad. I was wrong.

    • KT

Awful. I hate this entire look. In order of offensiveness:

      1. That is some of the shittiest makeup I’ve seen on her, wow. Also, does she not have eyelashes? Did her lips vanish? That can’t be her actual skin color, can it?? Ugh this is all so wrong.

      2. NO to the hair. Total fresh-from-the-pool locks right there, which would be fine if she was going to a barbeque or something.

      3. That dress is not good. It looks fine from the back, and I actually like the bodice, but the dress itself is awkward and looks mismatched. The proportions are weird, too.

      4. Really cheap looking accessories. Hate the shoes, hate the bag, DESPISE the earrings.

Oh honey. Go find that barbeque and put on some jeans and a t-shirt instead. I bet you’d look great in that.

    • CT14

I liked the dress better inthe first photo where it looked like the sidewalk was the skirt.

    • livesarah

The makeup immediately brought to mind Tan Mom.

    • DinahR

I really like Jennifer Lawrence. I like Dior. But I think she is just a bad match for this brand. Most of the outfits from Dior have been misfires (for me).

      • demidaemon

I agree with one half of your likes. i think you can figure out which.

    • demidaemon

That is some tight lipped smiling. I am guessing she was not happy with the results. Not that I can blame her.

    • Nisa

Everyone who worked on her head needs to be fired immediately.

    • Jecca2244

oh lord. it was like they found a D-list makeup artist.

      • Lulu

Seriously. She has no lips and her eyes look tired.

      • Clash D

        She looks absolutely awful.

    • Imasewsure

Judging from the other Diors this season, Gurl got off easy…. “Just ok” is saying a lot

    • https://plus.google.com/+FrankLithiumz/posts Frank Lithium

Honey, don’t take skin-care advice from John Boehner okay?

    • altermyego

Why didn’t Calvin Klein grab her or she run towards him after looking so stunning in that simple red gown she wore to her first (?) Oscars? How much longer is her contract with Dior? I can’t wait to see what she does to make up for these Dior years. I’m sure she’ll come back with a vengeance.
