IN or OUT: Liv Tyler in Proenza Schouler on the “Late Show with David Letterman”

Posted on July 16, 2014

Darlings, that most terrible of feelings has overtaken us; an eternal night of the soul for two people who sing for their supper by being really judgmental and opinionated all the time: that dreaded feeling of indecision.

Liv-Tyler-Proenza-Svhouler-Givenchy-David-Letterman-TV-Show-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)“The Leftovers” actress Liv Tyler makes an appearance on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in New York City in a Proenza Schouler dress from the Resort 2015 collection paired with Givenchy sandals.

The dress looks heavy and stiff. The hair is okay, we guess. Not loving the shoes, which look like hiking sandals. Maybe we’d hate it all more if she didn’t look so happy and full of life, instead of moody and full of herself, like so many stars facing cameras.

But come on: that dress looks like floral scuba wear, no? Is it us?

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! I don’t know what you two are going on about.

OUT! I’m not digging it either, T Lo.

Emma Watson’s leather-and-lace getup failed to impress the kittens, who voted it OUT.

I think a belt could have helped it. But It’s an OUT, it’s too disco camo for me.

    • Thomas

I was gonna say aquarium camo. As T & Lo said, it looks like scuba gear. I think it’d help you blend in with the ocean floor.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Tonight on Jacques Cousteau’s Underwater World we will ponder zee question of how best to blend with zee denizens of zee ocean…

      • evave2

Disco camo, aquarium camo: too loud to be camo. You can’t hide in this dress. I don’t like the shoes, but I don’t hate them. It’s just her legs look TOO white. Nothing seems to go together at all, so a big outie from me.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

While I like the colors in the print, there is something about the texture of the fabric that looks off kilter to me.

      • myandyleigh

I agree about the colors, and I also agree it looks sort of Aqua camo, which isn’t a terrible thing. Then there’s the heaviness of the fabric and the texture, I agree to all. But for me the big problem appears to be a Spanx mishap. She looks as though she has a girdle-like squeezing happening from the waist down, and whatever is doing the squeezing is too small in size. Sometimes when you try to make yourself smaller by wearing a really small pair of Spanx it makes odd things happen, like that little pad of fat you have below your navel gets squeezed forward and outward, so instead of making your belly flat it makes a faux baby bump. At the same time, it takes any nice junk you have in the trunk and flattens it, making you look assless from the side and big as a barn from the rear. Or So I’ve Heard. Ahem. I posit as evidence the noticeable groove around her waist where no groove should be. My money’s on an unfortunate Spanx mishap.

And I give a reluctant OUT, because she is otherwise beautiful and looks so pleasant.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

The proper, and properly sized/fitted foundation garments can make such a huge difference in how a dress fits and looks.

    • Anna Vasquez

      “Disco Camo”

I… I’m just not seeing the issue with the concept of Disco Camo. I sort of love it. ::hangs head::

      • RussellH88

Neither do I. Maybe Kylie Minogue by way of Private Benjamin would be fun.

    • AlexisPayne

I almost want to say in once you mentioned “disco camo” but alas, it is an out.

  • I love it, I might hate it if I were looking at it for real but I think it photographs well and she looks happy wearing it.

    • FuhUgh

Yeah, gotta go with an IN here. This is pretty good.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Very soft IN for being inoffensive but there’s decided room for improvement, starting with the neckline.

  • MilaXX

It’s okay. Small IN for me

  • kimmeister

In! The fit of the dress isn’t perfect, but it’s a decent length for a sit-down and I love the color combo. I like the shoes, just not on her. (Just a personal preference I guess, but I don’t think very pale people look good in black shoes, nor do very dark people in white shoes. Too much contrast.) Hair’s kind of meh but her cheeriness covers a lot of sins.

  • Julie Chase

In, I love the colors and her smile. I just wish she had saved this for the fall.

  • Mary Lauer

I like the pattern and how she looks overall so much that I am imagining it in a lighter fabric than neoprene, so it’s a tentative IN from me.

  • Judy_J

The dress looks strangely high-waisted and a bit too tight. I love the shoes, but overall I have to say OUT.

  • MoHub

It’s a classic shift dress, and I was doing fine until I noticed the black side panels on the bodice.

    • smallgirlsaretrouble

Yep, it was the side panels that killed it for me too. I want to like it, because it is Liv and because she looks so happy, but it’s an out.

  • trisker

“Floral scuba wear” swayed me! Even though I think she looks pretty and happy, the dress is OUT.

  • Thomas

Out. This would look so much better on a blonde or ginger. Send it to Cate Blanchett or Jessica Chastain.

  • In. I think she looks great and that dress probably looked good sitting, too. Then again, it’s probably Out because I would wear that whole ensemble. Points for having the first photo in this “in or out” spread be of someone halfway in and halfway out of a door.

  • Capt. Renault

Out. Out of season, at the very least.

  • hyperionic

  • sienna elm

In. The only things I don’t like are the colour of her polish and the black side-panels. Everything else is at least okay. I absolutely love the colour & print of the dress, and the shape too. It looks really nice in the video footage too. Maybe the camera flash makes the dress look more scuba-y than it really is.

  • SewingSiren

………..Maybe if she was wearing a sea foam green wig and carrying a parasol..

    • demidaemon

So, if she were a drag queen?

      • SewingSiren

I was thinking more along the lines of a mermaid, but it’s about the same thing.

        • demidaemon

True. especially if you a re a drag queen mermaid, like Adore Delano.

  • Lori

In, with reservations. I don’t like the side panels on the bodice, the shoes or the hair, but I do like the pattern & basic shape of the dress and the fact that she looks so happy. The smile was the tie-breaker.

  • hughman

Perfect for The Little Mermaid’s bachelorette party.

  • Jessica Freeman

IN. We’ve seen worse, no doubt.

  • Tricia Rose

Out… Right Now. Try again in November and I’d probably go IN.

  • Alyssa

In, but barely. It does look like floral scuba, but it’s inoffensive, isn’t sheer, doesn’t have random cutouts, isn’t a romper, is an appropriate length, etc.

  • teensmom99

IN IN IN. I love it–there’s a bit of a rocker mixed with SoCal vibe and who owns that more than Liv. I even love the sandals. It’s no WERQ but seeing her look so good is happy-making. And also extra nice after seeing Vulture’s slide-show of sad Liv.

  • deelup

If this were an average person walking down the street I’d think she looked great. As a star with a stylist? Not so much. OUT.

  • @Biting Panda

  • another_laura

In, with quibbles. A scoop neckline would mitigate the wetsuit comparison (great call, BTW, T Lo) and I don’t like the side panels. The rest is fine. I am surprised to say that I like those shoes.

  • Sarah

I love it. I am the type of girl who wears a lot of black, though.

  • Frank_821

I give a marginal in. It is a little stiff but it’s got just enough pop and coverage for a tv talk show

  • alyce1213

In. Nothing to write home about, but pretty and presentable.

  • Anna

We got no troubles, life is the bubbles, under the sea!

It would make a cute wetsuit. As a dress, no. But I love the colours on her.

    • Thomas

See, I think the colors would look better on a blonde or ginger. I don’t think her hair provides enough contrast, esp. since there’s so much black in the print.

      • Anna

*gasp* I’m a brunette and routinely wear those colours. I hear what you’re saying though, I’d love to see Julianne Moore in a clean silhouette like this and in those colours.

        • Thomas

She’s a very dark brunette though. Julianne Moore might be good. I was thinking Cate Blanchett or Jessica Chastain.

          • Anna

Mine is naturally even darker than hers, almost black (dyed a mahogany-auburn at the moment), agree though about Cate and Jessica.

          • Thomas

I just think it needs that contrast to really make it pop. Good choice in hair dye, btw. 🙂

  • Melanie

Out. That dress makes her look like she is thick and has no waist and neither are true about Ms. Liz! I do like the colors, but agree, the fabric is far too heavy.

  • SamE

OUT. The dress isn’t the least bit flattering and the shoes are fug.

  • Grumpy Girl

In. I see what the uncles are saying, but it looks good on her. And I’m thinking that for summer in an air conditioned venue, it’s seasonally appropriate. I like it all more from farther away than from close ups, when the pattern changes from an abstract floral to camo, but it’s such pretty colors on her, and seems to have a mild shimmer in the lights. And, as others have pointed out, she looks so damn happy, it elevates the whole look. (The shoes do not bother me as hiking sandals, because they do not look so breakable. I can appreciate some sturdiness in a shoe, sometimes.)

  • Cyd Butler

Not great but certainly acceptable. I say IN

  • gsk241

I’ll give it an IN only because it isn’t bad enough to be OUT.

  • Qitkat

Marginal for me, but out. The colors look good on her, but the look needs a more delicate, cuter shoe, maybe a silver sandal? Somehow the dark dress with her dark hair feels lacking something somehow.

  • MarissaLG

It is kind of dark and serious, and yeah, a little scuba- but I think she still looks good in it. She gets an IN from me.

  • Anique Ashraf

IN. It would’ve been more of an IN in January, but she looks so happy!

  • BobStPaul

Totally on the fence on this one. It’s not bad enough to be out but not good enough to be in.

  • OffToSeeHim

    Out. Ew.

  • Kitten Mittons

A tentative IN, because I do like the pattern, colors, and the dress in general, as well as her hair and makeup. The black side panels, neckline, and shoes need improvement, though.

  • EEKstl

IN, because I think this dress is actually beautiful and suits her well. AND despite the shoes, which I am not feeling at all.

  • KT

I like the print, the colors, and the silhouette of the dress. I hate the fabric and the way it’s awkwardly fitting her. It’s not a bad look, it’s just seriously hindered by the fabric, and pretty unimaginative overall. The shoes aren’t great, but they’re not terrible.

I’d say this is a bedgruding IN – a passing grade, though we expect improvement next time.

I was so stunned by how…altered…she was in her Letterman interview (Livvy in the sky with diamonds…) that I had to take a second look at the dress. It’s an out for me. So heavy for the dead of summer in NYC! And I love the shoes, but they do not work with this outfit. Heavy dress, heavy shoes…nope.

  • Lex

The colors on the dress are SO perfect for her coloring but she needs bolder makeup to really make her face pop. She is just sort of washed out looking here instead with that nearly nude lip color. I think it’s time for her to cut her hair- it’s gotten stale. The dress DOES look heavy but I still like the pattern and colors. Shoes are generic. I guess it’s a marginal out for me

  • Kbear

OUT – it is just missing the matching boxy jacket and pillbox hat. Although the colors are beatiful – this is way, way too OLD for her. Is she overreacting to her fathers fashion sense? Feathered earrings would help it a lot 🙂

  • carnush

    OUT. Because ugly shoes.

  • mjude

    love her. IN

  • Julie Ree

Dress and shoes are in. The hair is an out.

  • Nazzzy

IN. I don’t really care what it looks like as long as it looks good on her. And it does.

  • Imasewsure

This is way IN for our Liv… she is usually so far off the mark and this is fine. Even like the shoes with this dress

  • TwiddlyStun

I think it is IN. There are some lightweight fabrics that have that sheen/no sheen printed effect, and I think it’s done well here. I also love her shoes. Hiking sandals? I can’t imagine hiking in those! I do wish the hair had a bit more polish, but overall this is a great summer look for her.

  • jbontrager78

Out. The fabric looks too thick and heavy, and the dress just isn’t flattering.

  • Janet B

    Shoes, hair, fit, and seasonality.

(good color, silhouette and attitude are not enough)

  • AlisonHendryx

    In. It’s cute enough.

  • LibKat

Out. It is hard to make someone as beautiful as Liv Tyler look wide and boxy, but that dress is achieving it.

  • housefulofboys

In. I like her, which I suspect is coloring my judgement. It’s a little too tight, a little too stiff. I actually like the sandals, they look like elegant heels that are actually designed to take more than a few steps without the foot sliding all the way forward, the toes hanging on for dear life, or causing the wearer to teeter like a 1-year-old just learning to walk. I also like that Liv doesn’t go all spray tan on us, Yay for pale girls!

  • MissFern

the fit is wrong, it makes a tiny lady look heavy

  • Jacqueline Wessel

IN … maybe if she were against a sunny, summery backdrop I’d feel differently. But against the rainy, red brick, relatively dark background, she looks pretty good. And her smile is the sunny day.

  • frannyprof

In, but barely. But only because she looks happy.

  • Jangle57

I want to give her a pass because it isn’t really awful but no, it looks so constricting on her and I really don’t much like the shoes – OUT

  • unbornfawn

A little dark and heavy for summer. Nothing all that wrong with this look. She looks good and the smile is lovely. IN.

  • TerryMarie

OUT. Don’t like anything but her attitude.

  • BayTampaBay

OUT! She is not fat by any definition but this dress is making her look overweight.

  • decormaven

They’re making heeled Birkies now? I like the color of the dress on her, but the dress seems a skoosh tight. Love her mani/pedi! Small in.

  • The shoes aren’t that bad, but that dress is pure coral reef camo.

  • HeatherB

OUT. That dress looks like it makes noise when she walks and chafes. Also, I swear I saw those sandals at Payless the other day for $12.99.

  • Ashleigh

I say IN! because it just seems so “her”…

  • Bonnie Blue

I have to vote Out only because the material looks thick, stiff, and bunchy in the middle.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT. Definitely a problem with the fabric choice. And the shoes.

  • She seems really happy, but it does absolutely nothing for her. I can’t decide!

  • rosie5215

Out. The dress manages to be both shiny and dour, and the fit in the midsection is terribly unflattering.

  • marlie

Live resides on my Celebrity LOVE list, so it pains me to say that this is an “out.” From the side, the dress is fine, but from the front, it makes her look a little wide and shapeless. I don’t have a problem with the print or with the shoes, and she is as lovely as ever, but sorry, Liv.

  • PinkyK

Out. I makes her look chunky –
    Soooo not flattering.

  • Wink

Barely IN. Love the shape of the dress, but ‘meh’ on the dark colors and shiny fabric. No to the high-heel Tevas.

  • Kimberlini

IN Given her body type, it’s actually rather flattering.

  • PetitePear

Not great, not terrible. But she’s IN.

  • Judy_S

IN. I think she looks great. I would not recommend hiking in those shoes, but they look like one might be able to walk in them for more than 3 minutes, which is a plus.

  • conniemd

In, though I agree it looks heavy, but since she looks happy, I’m guessing it isn’t.

  • random_poster

In. I like the dress. I hate the shoes in the web photo, but they look different on her and she makes them look better.

  • ankali

    IN. This is perfectly acceptable.

  • Belvane

IN, head to toe. She looks great.

  • Samantha Klein

    IN. She looks fab.

  • largishbearishAtlish

OUT out out- the colors are pretty, but the fabric looks cheap (shiny), hot and heavy. The shoes (givenchy = big bucks?) scream ‘look what I got at Pic’n’Pay on sale!). With the dark background, can’t really see (or be bothered) with the hair…

  • quiltrx

A weak ‘in’ from me. Mostly because she’s gorgeous, has a beautiful smile, and seems to feel good in the dress.
I actually like the ‘aquarium camo’ pattern. I think the dress suffers most from excessive seaming and topstitching.

  • LuisaNL

well, it certainly doesn’t look july to me. but I love Liv, she’s so pretty and friendly!

  • Peri7473

She can be so hit or miss. She looks pretty and happy. IN from me.

  • kfizz

    Mmmmmmmmmeh. Out, I guess.

  • Pound of Salt

The fabric is heavy, but the colors are beautiful on her. In!

  • LJCdoc

Inish. It’s ok, but I can’t get too worked up about it, pro or con.

  • Shawn EH

Girl, that’s not your hair! Sorry Liv, but OUT.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

IN. I don’t love it but colors and patterns must be defended and advocated unless they are truly intolerable.

  • OUT – embiggening. Her shoes look nicer than the product shot though.

    • FibonacciSequins

Her shoes do look nicer-I think they’re a suede version.

      • I think you are right.

  • lalahartma

    OUT, cuz I’m grumpy today.

  • greymain

out…belt please…..tooooooo heavy. But her smile is nice.

  • Shannon Long

I’m not super fond of that print, and the silhouette is only marginally flattering. I do lover her hair however, and y’all are right to point out how lively and confident she seems– it goes a really long way towards selling a look. I barely even noticed the dress when I first saw these photos, I mostly just thought about what gorgeous woman she is.

  • It just doesn’t do anything for her. It’s not like, awful, but it’s definitely not good in any way.

  • sunflower

IN. I think it would read well on tv

  • demidaemon

I don’t know. It’s not awful, but I don’t really like it. It looks a bit enthickening to me. OUT, I guess, for the non-love.

  • luluransom

Out. Scrolled through whole thing muttering ‘heavy and stiff, heavy and stiff’. Apparently it wasn’t just me, uncles T and Lo.

  • kerryev

I sense that the opinion is there, just unexpressed because she’s beautiful and very likable. IMO, it would be cute in mid-December, with a belt.

  • I think SHE’S the problem, despite the smiles and waves. Not a good model and this needs a more highly educated advocate to make it sing. But it’s not a bad dress, and I like the use of color, so a begrudging IN.

  • Anapestic

I see your issues with the dress, but the overall look is pretty good, I think. IN.

  • FibonacciSequins

I love the heel on those shoes, but now can’t un-see them as hiking sandals. Unfortunately, the shoes were my favorite part. I dislike the fabric, pattern, colors and neckline of the dress. OUT.

  • Swiftlytiltingplanet

Out. The dress looks like a couch. And I have refused to purchase similar shoes for their very boredom.

  • Sara__B

Love her big beautiful smile. Dislike her hair, makeup, dress, and shoes. OUT.

  • Dress NOT flattering! Also too dark for this time of year…n shiney!

  • I like. iN

  • Mothra

Out. Looks like a shiny chair. Not at all flattering to her shape. I like those shoes, though.

  • IN. Love the colors on her so much, and I think I like the hair too!

  • SuzyQuzey

In. I also like the shoes.

  • Tracy_Flick

I can’t decide. It’s perfectly serviceable, doesn’t show the good china, and isn’t by Peter Pilotto. So I can’t REALLY say “out.” On the other hand, those sandals are Givenchy and they look just like a pair I bought at Sears in 1997. And the fabric of the dress is unflattering.

I guess, put me down for 0.5 IN.

  • newidentity

HIking sandals? B*itch, please. Only person who might try and wear those to hike is a Real Housewife of Wherever.

  • Heather

IN. I like it, and obviously she likes it too.

  • OUT. I actually love the shoes. Even covet. But that dress is def SCUBA. I am going to go copyright that phrase now.

  • Meri

I’m not wild about the fabric- looks weird to me- but I love the colors and she looks so happy. In.

  • Yoshio

IN! I like the dress and I love that she is radiating cheeriness. I do have a documented fondness for stuff made from neoprene so…

  • Jacob Bowen

OUT. Her hair does not look that great, it is TOTALLY a version of camo (automatic out right there) and those shoes are ughhhh.

  • formerlyAnon

In, but a very indecisive one. I thought the shoes & smile saved it, I’ll agree the shoes are not a thing of beauty on their own, but especially in side or 3/4 view they are just heavy enough to anchor the dress – which looks oddly as if it’s made of a very pretty version of those shielding drapes they give you to protect vital organs during x-rays – but simple & high enough not to look clunky.

  • Trickytrisha

In-ish. Dress fabric is pretty, but boobs to belly it’s stiff and constraining – yep, scuba wear. Hair makes her face look too long, shoes I kinda like. I guess I’m an IN because I like her.

  • PumpkintheCat

IN, even if it’s not quite right. She looks happy and that makes up for a lot!

  • Joycelyn Watterson-Woods

In, that smile makes up for a lot. I like the sort of “athletic/scuba”-ness of the dress, I just wish she had played it up more. Different shoes, low messy bun, same color of earring but just a stud?

  • Shalhevet

The hair breaks it for me, surprisingly (since I don’t tend to judge any clean looking, neat hair harshly.) It’s a nice hairstyle… that’s spectacularly wrong for her face, which shows a lack of awareness of what works for her. Her dress is merely inoffensive, shoes ok, and attitude good, but it’s an OUT.

  • annla

IN. Probably looked fine on camera. Looks good from medium shots.

  • GeoDiva

In: It looked really light and pretty on TV last night.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I like it. She looks pretty, I like the colors, and the sandals are not offensive. IN.

  • StrandedFashionista

I’ll give it an IN. Her coloring makes the color scheme of the dress work far more than it should.

  • mjmiller77

None of it’s great, or even good. However, I can forgive everything but the dress – looks like she’s stuffed in, and it won’t move a millimeter. So stiff! OUT

  • ModernDowager

  • jif

Out, unless she is going to a marine biologists’ ball. In which case, too on the nose, so still out.

  • Judih1

Hiking Sandals – you guys coin the best terms. This is an out – floral scuba wear indeed.

  • livesarah

Oh oh the makeup, WTF. And is her foundation shade way off? The dress and shoes serve to highlight her paleness in a really unflattering way. No to all of it.

  • rainwood1

OUT. The scuba wear comment is dead on and those shoes may be designer but they looK like they should be on the additional 50% off table at a discount store.

  • Dino Bonačić

IN. It’s Liv Tyler in a green-blue dress. I’m in.

  • maretha2

IN. I think she looks breezy and happy and comfy, which is always a winning trifecta.

  • Sam Smith

The colors are great for her eyes, but don’t love the heaviness of it.

  • ItAin’tMe

Yes, ocean camo and makes her look thick through the waist. Hair somehow doesn’t flatter her face. Kinda like the shoes. Overall, out.

  • belfebe

IN. Definitely. She looks terrific. What are you guys thinking about?

  • Pterodactyl111

Out. Floral scuba gear. I’m glad she’s happy, but it looks terrible.

  • StarburstLady

It’s just not lighting me on fire. OUT.

  • sherrietee

It looks like she took an old, stained dressmakers form and pulled the stuffing out of it so she could wear it. OUT.

  • prettyinmink

As this looks to be a very close vote, I feel it’s my job a lurker to sway the vote in my favor. I’m voting IN!

  • Jenna Marie

    It’s an IN.

  • Joanna

    Total IN.

  • FoxInSocks

On the fence about the fabric choice, although the print/colors I dig. But no doubt she is workin’ it, to me, so IN.

  • AndieJay

Who am I to write off any dress that makes a woman feel the way Liv clearly feels in this? IN.

  • Andrea Lentz

IN! I would totally wear this, it’s nothing to be scared of

  • Shaeyjosan

out. Skirt would look better if fuller and definitely belted. Maybe a modified neckline… boatneck or square neck. The colors are vibrant, but the fabric looks…. odd.

  • musi_

i like the dress. hate the clunky shoes, almost looks like those straps are velcro… and i cannot stand the hair.

  • Mona_Visa

It’s not perfect, but I love those colors on her. IN.

  • lahallita

In. Ok, it’s a little heavy, but it’s not leather!

  • H2olovngrl

She looks so pretty and healthy, I can’t hate. Plus the color is beautiful on her. In.

  • CTChik

    It’s raining in NY. IN!

  • Kikishua

I would like it more if it was all exactly the same, but for a different fabric weight.
