IN OR OUT: Aubrey Plaza in Emporio Armani at the “Guardians of the Galaxy” LA Premiere

Posted on July 22, 2014

We both thought it was adorable how Chris Pratt’s TV wife came out to support him for his big movie premiere.

We did not both think this look was cute, however. Lorenzo liked it; Tom thought the neckline was a little precious – and that velvet in July is ridiculous. And since we’re on vacation, we’re taking the easy way out and making you all decide.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! I am HERE for April Ludgate!

OUT! You can’t pull off the Queen Elizabeth collar, dear.

Everyone hated Liv Tyler’s scuba dress. Well, almost everyone. At any rate, it was voted OUT.

All she needs in a table with a hole in it and a service plate cover and she’s set to be the decapitated head on a doily in a haunted house.

      • sienna elm

      • SugarSnap108

Ha! Accurate — But what a happy disembodied head she’d be.

      • giddypony

I inking with long sleeves ‘d be a 17th century Dutchman

      • AlexisPayne

Can’t unsee that now, its an OUT

        • Anplica Fiore

          This!! Out indeed.

      • evave2

WoW Russell, you are cruel. BUT you are accurate.

On the model it looked like 3″ above the hem there is a fold. Am I blinded somehow or is there something there?
This lady’s dress however is an a-line.

Also, doesn’t she look like Amber Heard, sort of a removed duplicate (like in sci-fi movies)?

        • Constant Reader

No, it’s not you. There is a definite blouson effect just above the hemline that also creates a slight ruffling. I prefer it to the version Aubrey is wearing.

        • FibonacciSequins

The gathering at the bottom was removed for Aubrey, and without it the collar doesn’t make sense. OUT

      • Snarkmeister

It’s very Pierrot to me. Which is wrong on many levels, the first being that it makes me think of clowns. **shudders**

      • L’Anne

I thought that just because someone bequeathed her Walter Raliegh’s collar is not a reason to wear it.

    • Justine

      No velvet in July

    • teensmom99

Out but I lve the face and hair.

    • Michele Anne Lenni

That is the best ‘Miss Piggy at a Funeral’ homage I’ve ever seen!

      • Imasewsure

Yes but Ms Piggy would have deployed a feather boa to bring this look up to Diva-fabulous (in mourning of course). This is dull

    • OffToSeeHim

OUT. WTF is up with that lipstick? I never even got to the dress. But the velvet in July is probably why her face is shining like that.

    • TAGinMO

While Tom’s criticisms are valid, she looks fresh and pretty here. And I think the slightly unkempt hair is a nice counterweight to the precious neckline. I give it an IN.

      • teensmom99

disagree on the in but I like the rest of your analysis.

      • Let it out

Agreed! Not all black and white ensembles are terrible, although I think there’s a general knee-jerk reaction against them that I also kind of understand.

      • FuhUgh

I am also giving her an IN “because I am HERE for April Ludgate”!

    • kmk05

OUT. The velvet is the nail in the coffin. Come on, it’s July.

    • sienna elm

Out – she looks like she lost the sleeves the blouse she was wearing under her jumper.

    • WendyD

It really needs those chunky bracelets the model is wearing.

    • Jangle57

Velvet in July is absurd and why a sleeveless velvet dress (are designers seasonally challenged?) ???? However, since she showed the good sense to at least lose the stupid hem ruffle, I will give her a lower case in.

    • In_Stitches

I think fiercer shoes could have saved it. Some weird, golden strappy numbers with a nod towards the victorian. Those default pumps are sending her straight into OUT territory.

    • mdcoon127

    • Amelia Ross

IN but I’m not sure why. She looks cute.

    • bassfemme

It is a beautiful velvet dress with just the right amount of drape. The collar is kinda cool also. This would be a great dress to wear in January, and if it were another color. Right now I can’t see past the Dutch Masters cigar box.

    • marlie

OUT. It’s not particularly interesting, and velvet in July is almost an automatic out anyway.

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

i say no to this outfit but yes to aubrey plaza because i like her very much.

    • MoHub

My first reaction was: “OMG! Velvet with a clown collar! No!”

      • conlakappa

        Ridi Pagliaccio…

        • MoHub

Si! Buono! La commedia é finito.

    • Janet B

Silly collar and totally under styled.

    • @Biting Panda

      Out. French clown Hell.

    • Anna

Well, at least they got rid of the weird ruffle at the bottom. On the other hand, she looks like she’s attending a clown funeral.

      • smayper

FTW. An ELEGANT clown funeral, but still.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

for the clown that died after he/she saw Zoe Saldana’s trainwreck-the clown died laughing, at least.

          • Introspective

        • Anna

Ha! The velvet makes it elegant.

    • MartyBellerMask

I’m wondering if I would like it better with the runway style hem. Probably not on her. I wish she’s gone a little edgier with the styling.
      But I’m voting IN.

    • MinAgain

Are we comparing her to Zoe? In. Although the velvet is making me sweat, even here in my air-conditioned office.

    • SophieCollier

I wanted to like this, but really, her head seems to be popping out of a coconut cream pie.

    • Laura Renee

      OUT. Too ridiculous.

    • Claire

IN. The collar itself is kind of precious and I would hate it if somebody like Elle Fanning wore it, but Aubrey Plaza has the right kind of personality to pull it off, I think.

    • KCF

I was close to voting “in” because I think the silhouette and colors are pretty on her, but the velvet vetoed the look. Out.

    • Freynika

      Sluttiest pilgrim on the Mayflower.

      • Constant Reader

Oddly, that makes me like it a bit more.

      • Introspective

snort!!! between slutty pilgrim and clown funeral chic, BKs are nailing the snark today!!

ETA: out of course. what the fuck else could this be

    • sarcasmfont

OUT – collar is way too strange, and velvet in July is just wrong. But the shape and length of the dress work well on her, and the make-up and hair could work with a different dress.

    • vitaminC

Much as I dislike furbelows, I think she should have kept the 1920s slouchiness and ruffle from the runway version. As it is, OUT.

    • Mona_Visa

Lord, that 17th-century collar. I’m guessing the lipstick went on *after* the dress. Scares me just to contemplate it. OUT.

    • FrigidDiva

Out. I actually like the runway look, but on her it just doesn’t work. She needs edgier styling to go with this dress and to not wear velvet in JULY.

    • Michael_Jones

I’m with T on this one. Sorry, Lo. Out.

    • NinjaCate

      OUT. Hate everything about it.

    • NinaBoo

That collar reminds me of a scrunchie I had, after the elastic popped.

    • uprightcitizen

Love her. The pilgrim mini? Not so much.

    • RescueMe23

      “Edwuardians of the Galaxy”

    • elemspbee

Out. This dress on her is lifeless.

    • SewingSiren

I’m a velvet and white collar lover. BUT it’s JULY people JULY! Did these people just get out of a Barrel of Fun? Their brains are scrambled.

    • higgledypiggledy

Out. Put some white sleeves on it and we can talk. In December.

    • prisma

Very torn. Cute but odd. But OUT for the velvet in July infraction.

    • J.W.

      Twiggy would wear this.

    • Wink

OUT. If we’re saying ‘no’ to summer suede pumps, then it must be ‘hell no’ to a velvet mini in July! Am I right?

    • Gatto Nero

Out. I’m not liking the clown ruffle around the collar, which makes no sense when the flounce on the hem (see model) is removed. Don’t like either version, actually.
      Plus, velvet.

    • boweryboy

IN, only because back in ’89 I made a couple of dresses similar to this for a first year design final project. It’s making me all nostaglic and shit.

    • MilaXX

OUT!!!!!!!!!! The whole look is geriatric. Makeup is too heavy, shoes are too sensible. They removed the one interesting element from the dress, and who is wearing velvet in July!!!

    • LJCdoc

      OUT. Sheesh

    • Lori

Out. I agree with Tom. The neckline is a little too, and I’m not going to support velvet in July. Especially not black velvet. I don’t care that the stars’ calendar is not like ours, that’s flat ridiculous.

    • mjude

    • Sophia Finfer

OUT. Velvet in July IS ridiculous. Save this for a HOLIDAY PARTY, not a summer super hero movie premiere, *shakes head*

    • LilyVanessi

Definitely OUT. Maybe in 6 months…but then again, still no.

    • Jessica Freeman

    • traceyishere

That hair is a wreck and velvet in July is tragic.

    • Leslie Streeter

      Precious is her thing. Out.

    • another_laura

Out. The ruffle is awful. I have to say, though, that the rest of her is just fine. But that ruffle is a real buzzkill.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I just can’t approve black velvet in July, nor the Elizabethan collar treatment.

    • Kent Roby

OUT, only because of the velvet; she looks really cute.

    • KendraMR

OUT. Velvet in July in LA, really?! And no one except for Queen Elizabeth I could pull off that collar. Also her hair and makeup look awful.

    • elirt

Hate! She looks like the hipster court jester.

      • kimmeister

That’s my reason for giving her an out.

    • JauntyJohn

Harley Quinn First Holy Communion drag.

    • World of Sass

Sure! It’s weird and cute. She’s weird and cute.

    • Tracy_Flick

OUT. I like Aubrey well enough, but I prefer that a wine gift bag come with a bottle of prosecco.

    • Sarah

Oh, hell. Despite the velvet, I’m HERE for April Ludgate.

    • Jackie4g

      Velvet in July? No.

    • Shelby

In. It’s awful, but I kind of think she’s pulling it off (if that makes sense …. and ignoring velvet in July).

    • ashtangajunkie

      I tried, but I can’t. Out.

    • Lily

I had a dress almost exactly like this… in seventh grade.

    • NurseEllen

I agree that velvet in July is kinda crazy, but then again it’s sleeveless. A seasonally bipolar dress, for sure. But at least the crazy ruffle at the bottom is gone, and her makeup looks pretty. The collar is very odd but somehow I don’t mind it. I know I’m going to be in the minority but I vote IN.

    • PetitePear

Though not without problems, this is much cuter than we usually see her, so I’m calling it an IN.

    • Grumpy Girl

If only it weren’t velvet. I must vote OUT for that. Otherwise it seems like an appropriate dress given that she’s not in the movie (right?) and is there supporting a coworker from another project. It says I dressed up, but I’m not here for the spotlight. If only not in velvet. In July. While I am sitting under a snuggy in my overairconditioned office.

    • LibKat

Velvet in July with a twee collar is definitely OUT. This shape would have looked great on her in a different material.

    • allj

I feel like this dress *should* work for her, but it’s falling flat. Maybe on Audrey-bot?

    • Gabby

I’m with Tom…the collar is way too twee (a twee pirate, maybe?), and velvet in the summer is awful

    • Bert Keeter

Nothing says SUMMER in LA more than BLACK VELVET. Save it for FALL! Oh silly me …that’s when all the looser stylists will be putting their clients in SPRING 2015!

    • StarburstLady

Neaten up the hair and I’m on board. IN enough.

    • Sophie

It’s a sad clown costume. Out.

    • MaggieMae

OUT. Not her dress. This dress needs someone to make it ironically badass.

    • Courtney

Terrible collar, not so great hair, velvet in July, devoid of accessorizing (though I’m not sure what would work with that collar). Thank you for playing our game, but no. OUT.

    • Dino Bonačić

It’s so off-season it hurts. OUT.

    • EEKstl

OUT due to the inanity of velvet in July. In October I would have granted her an IN, despite the grocery hair.

    • Hallie

in– it’s kind of chic and she looks very happy. great h&m.

    • BayTampaBay

    • Laura Poehlman

This gives me ideas for Femme 3rd Doctor cosplay.

    • ChiKat67

Out. She does not have the bearing to handle that collar (especially not with sad hair) and velvet in SoCal in July is just plain stupid!

    • Rhonda Shore

      IN, she looks cute.

    • KT

This is weirdly calling to mind the Pillsbury Doughboy. Anything that does that is automatically OUT. I can’t believe this is even up for debate.

Every post so far today has featured a lot of shit-tastic style decisions! Remember yesterday? So many cute things? Sigh. We knew it wouldn’t last long.

    • lunchcoma

      I think it’s cute. IN.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Cute dress, for November maybe. Not for July. Out!

    • somebody blonde

Out. She can’t pull off the collar.

    • BLauDGaspode

No, sadly, that is not her dress, or her makeup. Out.

    • oat327

Fourth grader at a Christmas piano recital.

    • Constant Reader

I find myself torn. I like it on the model with the funkier hair and different hemline. I’d prefer an edgier shoe with it, though. And 3/4 sleeves. And for it to be worn in fall or winter. So I think I just talked myself into an OUT.

    • Kbear

Out, out, out. Just silly and clown-like.

    • conniemd

Out for the velvet in summer.

    • alliekat9090

It isnt a horrible dress but….VELVET??

    • gingerella

IN. It suits her, even though the deficits of the outfit are glaring.

    • Bozhi

OUT. Velvet in the summer would possibly work if she had styled it right, but she did not. The shoes and hair are wrong, and she really needed the right jewelry. I don’t mean like on the model, who looks like she is styled for the winter holidays, but the dress needed more than those pumps.

    • alyce1213

I like the dress better with the original hemline, but maybe for a cocktail party in November.

    • Plink

IN but the hair looks DIY.

    • formerlyAnon

OUT. Despite having the common sense to fix the hem gather/ruffle, they left the neck semi-ruff. There might be a case made – at a very different event – for full fledged ruff. The limp semi-ruff, no.

    • Mrs. O

Why’d she mess with the hem? She moved the style-o-meter from “designer original” to “mom’s idea of what’s OK for the prom”. I should know, I’m mom.

    • Danielle

Not a fan of the neck ruff. OUT.

    • E. D.

      Out, the neckline is ridiculous.

    • International Model

In. It’s darling and fits her brand.

    • crash1212

IN. I love that dress and she looks really cute in it. The makeup seems a bit harsh to me though. I’m all for a red lip…but something is a bit off…maybe it’s because she’s sweating from wearing the dread – Non-TLo Approved – velvet in July?

    • Abigail Chang

The dress looks like a wine cozy. Out.

    • Betsy

Everything is ridiculous (lipstick, collar, velvet), but she looks so cute. The hem is much better on her than the model.

    • judybrowni

I was thinking “Funeral at Clown College,” AND that was before I saw she was wearing black velvet in July in fucking Los Angeles.

    • MissFern

I love her and I hate that dress.

    • Lisalady161

No one can pull off that collar, dear. Do Jamie Lee from ‘True Lies’ and rip that sucker off!

    • unbornfawn

      Bordering on clown…….. out.

    • cocohall

Is Pierrot the Clown the villain in the movie? Is this a tribute dress? The red carpet atrocities keep piling up for this movie. It does not bode well . . .

    • Monabel

Cute for a four year old’s party.

    • MarissaLG

Sorry Aubrey. I love ya, but this is an OUT. She looks like a well-meaning English teacher trying for a “Sexy Shakespeare” Halloween costume.

    • HobbitGirl

OUT. I am so tired of “Pilgrim chic” and ruffles and black velvet don’t belong on red carpets in JULY.

    • lalahartma

    • ThaliaMenninger

I like it. It’s a little on the twee side. Or perhaps the “pose with Santa, darling Muffin” side. But I still like it.

    • PinkyK

Out – it’s too precious. And she needs to brush her hair!

    • amanda lynn

in. i like it. hate the velvet, but it’s cute.

    • Gloriana Reginata

Out. I like that she ditched the weird hem on the model, but the ruff above the ring of white neckline is like putting whipping cream on icing, when the poor thing needed nothing beyond creme fraiche.

      • suzq

With the “weird hem,” the collar makes some sense because it repeats the same gathering. Without the hem, it looks like a tacked-on mess. Without the collar, it’s just a black, velvet cocktail dress that would have folks questioning why they should pay Armani prices for it.

    • suzq

I’m having flashbacks to the Project Runway Paris trip where Nina and Heidi tell Laura Bennett that the white collar and trim on her black “couture” evening gown looks “sad.”

    • prettybigkitty

      Clown collar.

    • sleepycat

part of me likes the design in theory, but I agree with Tom, it is JULY, not the time for black velvet

    • Jarethee

I like her, but this dress….is…..not…..good. Out.

    • Mothra

Out. Velvet in July is about as out as you get.

    • Jammies

      Fancy wine bag–Out.

Is dressing for Christmas in July a thing now?

    • frannyprof

    • Kaytee

To borrow from your blogsisters – WTF??? Velvet in July means one word OUT!

    • butterflysunita

      No. OUT.

    • quiltrx

OUT because hot fabric and not her dress and half-assed hair.
Send this dress to Audrey Tautou or Marion Cotillard, either would probably figure out what to do with it.

    • what not

IN, because she looks like an old painting and I kind of dig that.

    • Alloy Jane

OUT. If she wore this yesterday then she probably had to burn it in order to eliminate that horrific armpit smell yesterday’s hot weather left behind. I mean, it was 80 in the South Bay, of all places. I can imagine it was at least 90 in Hollywood. Also, the dress is dumb. If you’re gonna sport an E-collar, go Gryffindor or go home.

    • ReadBarbara

Out. That collar is ridiculous for anyone over the age of 6. But kudos to her for having the good sense not to wear the shoes the model was wearing.

    • sleah_in_norcal

out. without the white part it would be cute, and with the spaghetti straps it’s almost seasonally appropriate. but, no…

    • demidaemon

Until I realized it was made of velvet, I contemplated giving a pass on the collar for quirky. But the velvet takes it into automatic OUT territory. OUT OUT OUT.

    • livesarah

Out, it looks costume-y somehow. Like a bad attempt at medieval page boy. Her face (could it be the makeup?) looks like Olivia Munn and Amber Heard had a baby… Could be less lucky than that, I guess!

    • Raf

Reminds me a lot of Laura Bennett’s gown for the challenge in Paris. But Laura’s was better.

    • decormaven

Silly collar and velvet in July. Automatic thumbs down. Out.

    • crashtestbonnie

“You can’t pull off the Queen Elizabeth collar, dear.” <— I'd argue it's actually more Catelyn Stark than QE1, but still an OUT.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

Out. That collar thingy is terrible and, well, velvet in July.

    • Shawn EH

IN! This look is clever and only slightly ironic, which is a good move for her.

    • Captain_Awkward

Unseasonable, but I’m going with IN. I love it on her. The collar is like a big white bounce card illuminating her face.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Velvet with a clown collar? Oh no. OUT.

    • kerryev

Out. She took off the only interesting element and left the dumbest.

    • Jessica O’Connell

OUT. That collar is a mess.

    • AndieJay

Out. She should have at least keep the bottom flounce too. It saves the thing from taking itself too seriously.

    • altalinda

      Not great, but ok. In.

    • Pudgy Possum

Out. Why has no one mentioned clown costume yet?

    • JimMcC

She looks so happy and so beautiful from the neck up. But I just can’t get there with he collar. I call it out, but I wince as I do it.

    • housefulofboys

Out! I had a dress like this in blue velvet with a white ruffled collar…when I was 8.

    • ShaoLinKitten

OUT. Hideous and a big NO to velvet in July. Also, is there something about Aubrey Plaza that she always looks so uncomfortable/odd in lipstick?

    • Columbinia

OUT. The dress is meant for age fourteen and under.

    • semirose

I see nothing offensive or exciting about it but IN I guess?

    • Boop

IN. I think she looks great.
