Gillian Anderson at “Sold” Opening Night Screening

Posted on July 14, 2014

Like all right-thinking people everywhere, we’ve worked very hard to cultivate a seething hatred for Miss Gillian. Why? Because she’s that rare creature: the person who, honest-to-God, really-and-for-true, actually does get more beautiful as she ages. Not that she was ugly back in her Agent Scully days, but we never saw anyone hit their forties and blossom the way she did.

Having said that, these might not be the best pics to illustrate that point.

We’re doing that Miranda Priestley tip-to-toe eyescan, indicating the very mildest of begrudging approval while making it clear that improvements are required.

She’s beautiful, but the outfit’s kinda bleh. We’ve all seen this dress a hundred times. It looks decent enough on her, but it’s not exactly exciting. And adding oversized white pumps didn’t help. We declare this look serviceable, with the potential to be chic, given the right shoe and jewelry choices.

Now go watch The Fall on Netflix if you haven’t already. She’s superb in it.

I SO want more episodes of The Fall!!!

      • homofascist

Me too!!! Both for some Jamie Dornan and for Ms. Gillian’s cougar takedowns. “I’m staying at the Hilton. Room 203″.

      • Froggae

Me three! They’re supposedly working on the second season now. I hope Dornan doesn’t make the mistake of abandoning it for that 50 Shades crap.

      • lundibleu

There’s a new series on the way, or at least commissioned by the Beeb. I’m looking forward to it.

    • RussellH88

      I hate the pockets.

      I love her on Hannibal.

      • gabbilevy

Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal Hannibal

        • AnnaleighBelle

          Hannibal.

          • twocee

            Hannibal.

            • smayper

              Hodor!

        • Trent

Sorry, is that Hannibal ‘completely ignored by Emmy nomination voters’ Hannibal? ‘Cause I’m still bitter about that.

And I saw Gillian close up at NY Comic Con last year and she is absolutely lovely (and very flirty with David Duchovny).

        • http://www.dinnerisserved1972.com DinnerIsServed1972

Is it wrong of me to be so happy that her other show got cancelled so maybe she can go full-time on Hannibal?
Sweet Christ on a cracker is that show good.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Speaking of Mads Mikkelsen, are you familiar with a Danish crime/police series from the early 2000′s, Unit One? One of our local cable channels has been running it, and it features Mads as a detective;he makes the whole show worth watching, whatever he’s doing.

        • LilyVanessi

Have you seen The Hunt? Mads doesn’t have to say anything to get you to know what he’s thinking. Powerful movie.

          • NinjaCate

It’s in my queue! So it’s good then? I only know what the blurb says and I added it because I wanted to see more of him.

            • smallgirlsaretrouble

Be warned, I cried…. several times

          • bitchybitchybitchy

That movie is on my must see rental list. There’s something about Mads that is really compelling

        • RussellH88

Nope, I’ve only seen him in Hannibal.

I had to watch a video of him playing Wii on Youtube just to let myself know that he’s capable of being human because his Hannibal scares me.

      • Jacob Bowen

Agreed, the pockets (which I normally love) look AWFUL.

      • fursa_saida

She needs to hire whoever does her hair on the show full time.

    • nannypoo

It should not be hard to find shoes that work with this dress, and it’s too long by a few inches. But really, she is beautiful.

      • Chickadeep

EVERYTHING is at least a couple of inches too long on her…it’s been this way since the ’90s — she’s teeny, and has never discovered tailoring, apparently.

    • MilaXX

Burn the white shoes, maybe touch up those roots a bit. I just added The Fall to my watch this yesterday. Sadly I wasted my time watching yet another episode of The Leftovers instead of watching it.

      • FibonacciSequins

        The Leftovers isn’t worth it?

        • Qitkat

It’s beginning to acquire that 10-day-old refrigerator smell. Pretty good actors, but the storyline continues to be creepy, baffling, and increasingly unsatisfying.

          • alyce1213

Your analogy is perfect, considering the title. Good job.

            • Qitkat

The creators ought to have realized their silly title would generate lots of similar comments ;-)

          • FibonacciSequins

Your description is so interesting, I kind of want to watch it more now, just to see.

            • Qitkat

If you do, stick with it through the third episode. If ever any acting from Christopher Eccleston would erase Doctor Who forever from my mind, this one is it. He is pretty awesome.

            • Sobaika

I haven’t seen Dr. Who, but I thought the most recent episode was the best one – that’s not saying much, mind. The show fares much better when focused on an actual plot (pathetic as it was) and isn’t centered around the most handsomest police chief in all the land.

            • MilaXX

You mean the hot cop? lol

            • MilaXX

I thought his American accent was pretty bad.

            • Qitkat

Yeah, it was iffy at best, but I don’t seem to get as bothered by poor accents as most people, I don’t know why. I do think he is an above-average actor.

            • Qitkat

Retro-corrected myself: It’s the Southern accents from actors that drive me the craziest. Every single Southern state has its own accent, and some of them more than one. My whole family is from Alabama which is why I think I pick up on poor imitations of the South.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

Your comment reminds me of one of my pet peeves with the original “Forsyte Saga” on PBS(the Eric Porter/Nyree Dawn Porter/Susan Hampshire version, for younger Kittens). When the series progressed to the young Jon Forsyte’s romance with an American woman, the actress who played his love interest had such a bad generic Southern accent. It was laughably bad.

          • MilaXX

Best description ever. I find myself disliking it more and more, yet hoping it will turn itself around.

        • MilaXX

I like a lot of the actors involved so I’m trying to stick to my 3–5 episode rule, but the show feels like it’s trying so hard to be SUCH SERIOUS TELEVISION but all it’s delivering is bleak, sadness & hopelessness.

          • Paula Pertile

i’ve watched the first two episodes and am juuuuust on the verge of being too annoyed to go on . . . but love some of the actors, and am still wondering about the deer and the kitchen thing and what the hell the people in white are all about, exactly, except smoking and not using hair conditioner, so will stick with it a bit longer.

      • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

Watch The Returned if you haven’t already. Outstanding and good practice for French.

        • MilaXX

I’ve seen it and enjoyed it. Perhaps that’s why this I find this show so annoying.

    • demidaemon

Hate the shoes and the weird sleeves on the dress. I would have preferred this as a basic LBD with really amped up accessories than what she showcased.

    • Anna

I know she’s a natural blonde, but I miss the red. I’d prefer a couple of inches off the hem, the dress in a colour and a stronger lip, but HER FACE THOUGH.

      • WendyD

She’s basically said she’ll never go red again. I think it makes her too instantly recognizable in public as Scully.

        • Anna

I get where she’s coming from. But it looked so beautiful on her, especially with her eyes.

    • Janet B

Color would have been nice or a print. The black and white are too stark for her.

    • very nope

we never saw anyone hit their forties and blossom the way she did.

      Julia Louis-Dreyfus?

      • Wink

Add Julianna Margulies and Halle Berry. (Good Lord… Halle is more beautiful now than she was 20 years ago!)

      • teensmom99

Nope, Julia might have been a buddy on Seinfeld but she was always gorgeous. Gill is more of a knock out than ever, while JL-D is an amazing combo of never aging and age appropriate. So both gorgeous but it’s not the same. Sorry to nitpick but I wouldn’t be a BK if I didn’t.

    • AnnaleighBelle

Dr. Bedelia DuMaurier is looking hot! She and Mads will be … not gonna do spoilers.

    • decormaven

Jewelry. Stars have access to it- why don’t they use it? I’d be a glittery fool if I had any pull.

      • annrr

        Exactly and me too.

    • Wink

A dress with pockets sounds like a good idea. However, if a dress has pockets, the wearer will invariably put her hand(s) into them like this. Not good.

    • teensmom99

The curse of the white pump.

    • kimmeister

She looks like Emma Thompson’s younger sister (that’s not a bad thing).

    • xmixiex

      Love. Her.

    • Qitkat

I think she looks lovely (I can overlook the stale white pump). I’ve always thought this style of dress flattered a LOT of different women.

    • marlie

Another pretty but bland look. Was Hollywood out of colorful shoes, clutches, and jewelry today? Ok, it’s an ongoing problem, but we have Katherine Heigl earlier and now Gillian in perfectly fine outfits that could have desperately used better and more interesting accessories. But yeah, Gillian is gorgeous. Bitch.

    • Zirza

Boring but acceptable dress notwithstanding, she’s still my fantasy BFF.

    • PinkyK

I’m so not a fan of this dark roots trend….Otherwise she’s fab!

      • maretha2

I’m a natural blonde and this is exactly how my hair looks. I’m sure Gillian probably has pricey colorists, but I think having roots that match the ends actually looks less natural than when the roots are a little darker. This is hardly an egregious case of weird dark roots.

    • Aidan B

I got about two and a half episodes into The Fall and haven’t been able to finish it because Jamie Dornan’s character freaks me the fuck out. I’m sure the fact that I’m watching it alone in my apartment at night, waiting for my fiancé to come home, wasn’t helping, but seriously, I just found it too disturbing. I may jump back in someday (in the daylight). But yes, Jillian is stunningly gorgeous though, regretfully, this outfit does nothing to highlight that.

      • Imasewsure

I had the same reaction. I could recognize how good it was and how well acted, etc. (and I was entranced by how beautiful she is) BUT too creeped out to watch more than two episodes. Maybe in broad daylight some day!!

    • mjude

I am a fan but not of those shoes.

    • deech_sea

She has grown more beautiful with age, hasn’t she?

    • M_E_S

Bedelia! So excited to see her on S3 of Hannibal…she absolutely KILLS it on that show. Like everyone else.

    • http://stylishsass.blogspot.com/ TAKippy

      She looks FABULOUS on Hannibal.

    • Ganoc

See also: Wright, Robin, & Basinger, Kim – women whose faces are much more interesting and beautiful now they’ve aged.

    • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

She was so amazing in The Fall. Hate the white shoes. Shoulders look like weird monochromatic epaulets.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You’ve put your finger on the cap sleeve/epaulet thingies. They’re drawing my eye, but not in a good way.

    • James

I adore her. I’ve love her since the X Files days and my love just continues to grow. She can lose the shoes though.

    • Denise Rambo

White shoes with a black dress. Ugh.

    • crash1212

Those shoes. Burn them. Now. Otherwise…looks good.

    • BeeBeauNYC

I’ve been watching X-Files re-runs lately, and they still scare the beejesus out of me!

    • Mothra

Man, she does look great but those sleeves look like they are taped on with electrical tape. I think because it is black, we can’t see some of the interesting nuances, but it is kind of boring. White shoes–Boo. Her hair looks great though. How old is she?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

She’s one of my fence jumpers. I’m not sure she could ever do anything wrong in my eyes.

    • WendyD

She is my goddess. I have worshipped at the Altar of Scully for the past 20 years. There is nothing else in pop culture that I love as much as The X-Files. And her choices post-Files have been impressive.

    • venusvelvet

Maybe it’s all the recent 24 episodes I’ve been binge watching, but she reminds me of Kim Raver in these pics.

    • enuma

She really has gotten more beautiful as she ages, plus she’s not being hampered by 90s makeup. Those brown toned lipsticks and the heavy lower-lid liner they made her wear as Scully were not flattering.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Fashion be damned. I will never like solid white shoes with a solid black dress.

    • Finis Terre

Folks, it’s a small film festival and a small indie movie, not a glitzy Hollywood premiere. Cut her some slack.

    • prisma

Sigh. I miss The X-Files. Gillian Anderson kicks ass.

    • Paula Pertile

      Not crazy about the hair.

    • Shawn EH

Maybe she’s still a little embarrassed about Crisis? On my rational love list, always, Gillian!

    • quiltrx

      Those shoes are SO icky.
Maybe a long necklace would liven this up?

    • NinjaCate

Today is the day I stop joking that I am old at 24 because I COMPLETELY MISSED that she was the X-Files lady. Whoa. That said, I started watching the Fall last night! Not far enough in to give it a verdict yet though.

    • RichardPrebble

She looks terrible. As does every women after 30. It’s unbelievable to think that this monstrosity was once considered attractive.

    • jangma

I love her, but Bedelia Du Maurier would not cosign this look.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

She’s IT in The Fall, I loved that thing.

    • E. D.

I love her, but those shoes…
Can’t wait for the next season of The Fall. Too bad her other US series was cancelled.

    • StrandedFashionista

In Hannibal she looks like some latter-day Grace Kelly ice goddess. Here, not so much.

    • JynxTheCat

Boy are you boys right about her forties. I dunno or care if it’s work done or what…she is striking as hell at this age. Also dress and shoes agreement.

    • alliekat9090

She is so beautiful at this point, she sort of frightens me. Her performance in House of Mirth was unforgettable. Bet I have watched that movie 10 times.

    • https://plus.google.com/+FrankLithiumz/posts Frank Lithium

The Fall, starring Hannibal’s psychiatrist and a certain Mr. Grey.

And damn right, this woman is certainly like fine wine.

    • Amanda Schaefer

I think she looks classic and classy.
