“Downton Abbey” Cast at the 2014 Summer TCA Tour

Posted on July 23, 2014

Once again, members of the Downton Abbey cast make the trek across the Atlantic to poledance for American audiences. The very least we could do in return is to judge their outfits and let them know which areas are problematic, no? Please. It’s no trouble at all.

Adorable, but the shoes are wrong. Black lace-up boots would’ve been better. Granted that’s kind of heavy for July, but he’s wearing a vest, so we figure he can handle it.

Hmm. Is there perhaps a trend of cute outfits paired with disappointing shoes here? Love the dress, but she needs to stop shoving her hands into those tiny pockets. She’s distorting the silhouette and it looks like she’s clenching her fists. The shoes are tragic and she should be wearing black sandals.

This is cute, but we feel like it needs a belt or something to define the waist. Also: she could’ve gotten away with white shoes here.

Fringe and wallpaper. Absolutely not.

  • cinderellen

Besides the fringe and wallpaper effect, Joanne is too small scale for the dress. It is wearing her.

  • majorbedhead

Lady Edith looks like she’s about to punch someone and that Stella dress is just hideous.

I would, however, like to put Alan Leech in my pocket and take him home. He’s adorable.

    • Carleenml

he really is the cutest thing.

    • stella…that explains a lot. actually, i thought it was kind of cute until i saw it was fringe. if it was an appliqued white line it might be acceptable. i like the two b&w patterns together.

  • Beardslee

I KNEW that last one had to be a Stella! That horrible wonky fringe and nothing shape. Bless her, she never disappoints.

    • gabbilevy

Stella must have some excellent dirt on *everyone in Hollywood. There’s no other explanation for how she constantly gets stars (or their stylists) to contract cases of Fugliness blindness.

    • Introspective

didnt we all?? I saw all that frippery and yelled “fuck me theyve let stella near a singer again”!

      • demidaemon

I feel like some other unfortunate soul has worn this dress as well, but I cannot remember who it was. It’s probably a case of selective memory (can you blame me?), but still, the notion is there.

  • Lady Edith FTW. I always new she would the lead in the style war on DA.

    • Carleenml

I think her face and hair look gorgeous.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

She’s the best model of the bunch, hands down.

      • She looks relaxed, and that smile seems genuine, and that is 98% of the game.

  • Alexis Wenceslao

They are ALL wearing wallpaper swatches, y’all.

    • Chickadeep

Except for Allen…he’s wearing the fabric swatch for the ottoman.

      • evave2

God bless you Chickadeep: you made me laugh. Good morning.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Since their costuming is so perfectly on point for the show, it’s especially jarring to see the awkward styling and outfit choices the ladies regularly sport on the RC.

  • Aidan B

Overall a decent effort. Poor Joanne knows she did wrong here.

  • Janet B

Allen looks cute. His jacket doesn’t have much structure, it reminds me of a cardigan.

    • kimmeister

Which is probably why he thought he could get away with it being too small in the shoulders.

  • teensmom99

Michelle has finally learned the rules of the RC and the lady knows how to pose and give face.

  • auntbets

When is Stella McCartney going to stop making clothes? (Too harsh? I’m just so confused about what happened. I think I used to like some of her stuff.)

    • prisma

I don’t understand this either. Everyone seems to agree that her stuff is hideous, so I don’t know why she’s still such a name-in-lights designer. Other than her last name. Really…the fringe is pretty WTF.

      • MoHub

Completely her last name. She probably wouldn’t even have been admitted to a design school without it.

        • Whever

What makes me most irritated is she didn’t go to design school- she got to be an apprentice on Saville Row. SAVILLE ROW. And she churns out these sad attempts at fashion. If there’s anything that will make me throw up my hands, that is IT.

          • MoHub

And without the name, she probably wouldn’t have gotten the apprenticeship, either.

          • BayTampaBay

I thought she went to Central St. Martins in London?????

          • Whever

Ah, you’re right. SHE DID BOTH. And still makes things that are about as tailored as a paper bag.

          • Sophie

She might have learnt tailoring and sewing skills on Savile Row, and no fashion – just because the exterior is ugly, it doesn’t automatically mean it is badly made. She probably designs monstrosities of excellent quality.

    • scoobynacks

I still haven’t forgiven her for the crotch pineapple, and I never will.

  • Nancer

    STELLA!!! That’s horrible.

    • Thomas

It reminds me of a lampshade.

  • In_Stitches

Something tells me I’ll be the gouda, standing alone on this, but I don’t hate the Stella. Some of the notions from her dripping-fringe collection are really working for me.

Michelle Dockery in Vicky B is fine, if just a bit pedestrian. It seems like something a lot of women would love to own and probably already do. It’s flattering though.

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

*whisper voice* psst – i like the stella on her too!

  • Alyssa_T_Robot

    1. that chauffer is FINE.
    2. i like lady edith’s head and the print on her dress but it completely obscures a nice figure and tlo is right – those shoes are ick.
    3. lady mary looks a little boring but very pretty.
    4. i think anna looks very mod and though her weird dress is weird, i can dig it. it’s kinda fun and she’s so cute.

    • kimmeister

I don’t hate Laura’s shoes, but I don’t understand the thought process in pairing them with that dress at all.

    • fursa_saida

I think her head has been done up in a fairly Twiggy-reminiscent style and I am all for it in her.

  • NBG

Stella trolling us again. Lady Mary wins this round (even though she is bordering on being Allison Williams boring) in that dress. At least she was smart enough to not show up looking like a lamp.

    • MoHub

Re: Dockery. I’ve been repeatedly talking about her support issues.

    • Snailstsichr

OMG, yes!! I want to lock her in a room with Stacey (from What Not to Wear) and have her listen to a lecture on respecting the girls.

      • MoHub

Since she’s in the UK, there’s always Trinny and Susannah—the originals—and they’d be even more ruthless in telling her what she obviously needs to know.

        • Snailstsichr

          Good call!

  • Frank_821

Allen Leech is a bit off but cute

btw how tall is he? I thought for some reason he was taller than he appears to be in these photos

also it never connected in my head he was in the film Cowboys and Angels

  • georgie

Each lady should pass her shoes on to the lady on her left

  • Glam Dixie

I knew that wallpapered, fringed mess was a stella mccartney (my exact thoughts, even before I read yours) as soon as the pictures loaded. Everyone else looks nice.

    • JulieTy

      Same here!

      • Glam Dixie

We are well trained Bitter Kittens!

  • Anna

Before I even looked at the others (without having had any caffeine yet AND without scrolling down to read the caption), my first thought regarding that wallpaper and fringe monstrosity was, “OMG, EWW, THAT IS STELLA MCCARTNEY.”

  • MoHub

What the frog is that supposed to be? It’s certainly not fashion by my definition.

And on another front—literally—Michelle Dockery still needs better support.

  • Noah

I’m barely okay with jeans and a blazer; I cannot with jeans as the third piece of a three-piece suit.

Also, even before I knew who the designer was, once I saw the fringe, I was like, “STELLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!”

    • somebody blonde

Ha! I’m not the only one! Seriously, if he’d just picked a different color vest or jacket, it wouldn’t be this way.

  • Kent Roby

Thanks to you, Uncles Dearest, I can’t view a rose print without thinking about what it would mean if Joan were wearing it!

  • jilly_d

Mr. Leech’s jacket is a bit to small. It’s making him look more stout than he is, methinks. Laura Carmichael is so beautiful. I never think she’s the ugly duckling her sister makes her out to be on the show, but they must do a radical amount of ugly-fying because her face always looks stunning on the RC/in magazines.

    • scoobynacks

They do deliberately frump up Edith. She’s supposed to be the ugly duckling/black sheep etc of her sisters. The more she takes on her independence, the prettier they seem to let her become so maybe that’s the secret. The growth of the character will eventually make her a swan.

  • PastryGoddess

That fringe dress is a Stella isn’t it? I can recognize that fug from 50 paces away

    • smh4748

      1. Do Want.
      2. I can live with it, but I guess I’m traumatized by Kim Kardashian’s couch dress a few years ago, because that’s what I had a flashback to. That is some terrible posing though!
      3. I wish so much that she was not so staunchly opposed to bras.
      4. Joanne, wearing the mark of the beast (Stellafringe).

      • smh4748

Oops, that wasn’t supposed to be a reply. Sorry PastryGoddess!

  • Judy_S

The Mccartney is hideous but she looks so good above the fringe that I didn’t notice in the group photo.

  • Gatto Nero

That Stella dress is an abomination. And I wish those Nudist sandals would disappear from red carpets and poledances everywhere.
Laura looks lovely (but needs different shoes). The Erdem is so pretty on her.
Michelle’s bodice is just bordering on racerfront territory.

    • Whever

Wouldn’t a deep teal/peacock sandal look amazing with that Erdem? The white pumps aren’t bringing ANYthing to the outfit.

  • Danielle

Head over heels for Michelle Dockery’s dress. I think it’s adorable and perfect for late summer.

  • Diane Iafrate

its a shame about Joanne, her hair and makeup look good. Why do people pick these Stella dresses !

  • DagnyReardon

That French pedicure on Joanne is giving me a rash.

    • Gatto Nero

      I hate them, too.

    • GorgeousThings

Ew – didn’t notice that until you mentioned it.

    • lobsterlen

Yes a kindred spirit! I see them all the time and always wonder, “Why on earth would I pay to make my toe nails appear longer.”

    • Grumpy Girl

Count me in this group. Do not like!

    • I’m glad you said that. They just look so tacky.

  • GorgeousThings

Stella McCartney and Raf Simons are two designers whose fame is completely unjustified. That dress is tragic. It reminds me of the drapery dress from “Went with the Breeze”

  • SuzyQuzey

Michelle Dockery also needs A BRA. That woman really seems to be in denial re: this need. The dress is surprisingly cute, for VB.

    • Gerry Coleman

The boys might not be missing the waist definition quite so much if she would get the girls up where they belong.

  • smh4748

    1. Do Want.

  • Grumpy Girl

Wait, is the skirt of Michelle Dockery’s dress all seperate pieces, rather than pleats? Maybe I need coffee, but as I looked at it more closely, I started seeing multiple slits in a way that made me wonder.

  • I looked at Michelle’s dress and immediately thought, a skinny blue or green belt would do a world of good for that dress, which is quite lovely. My studies at TLo University have worked! I do love the dress–one of the few instances of a “racer” neckline (or whatever it is properly called, when the armholes are all scooped out like a sports top) is working on a couture level. The ladies shoes are fine but in each instance the wrong person is wearing them! They should have traded.
What is the little red loop on the side of Allen’s jacket, and does it serve any purpose other than to distract? (Perhaps to distract from those awful shoes?)

    • It’s a boutonniere loop, isn’t it? Not that I think it’s *really* for that, but I think that was the original intention for that feature in men’s jackets.

  • lobsterlen

Alan looks wonderful only minor quibbles which can be overlooked because I love love grey and pink.

  • Sophie

Really like Laura Carmichael’s picture, apart from the akward posing. Allen Leech looks very cute, Michelle Dockery less so – I dislike the little chain attached to her neckline and the top flattens her bust. Very nice colours, though.
As to Joanne Frogatt, I knew it was a Stella McCartney as soon as I saw the fringe. I rather like the “wallpaper-print”, the grey makes it less overwhelming in my opinion, but I really hate the fringe.

  • Melissa Rose Mulchahey

No cichlet toes please – it’s so RHONJ…..

  • Wink

Enough of the dresses with pockets. It seems like a good idea, but the wearer feels like she’s required to shove her hands in there!

  • decormaven

That fringe looks like a creature crawling across her chest. Not a good look.

    • Grumpy Girl

I was thinking it would be really cute to wear on Sesame Street, with the Muppets all around. Maybe dancing with Snuffleuffagus (pardon my spelling).

  • snarkykitten

If that last dress was a t-shirt & the fringe was just a white streak, it’d make a pretty bitchin shirt. as a dress? hell no.

  • Hetha Innis

I never would have guessed that was a Victoria Beckham dress….it’s (for lack of a better word) a bit frumpy. I’ve never seen a design of hers that I didn’t like, until this.

  • fromanotherplanet

I live for Lady Mary’s bitch face. Diane Kruger, take notes. This is how you look down on the proletariat and still them make love you. Relatable elitism I call it. Lady Mary has it.

  • paintedfish

ugh, that Stella McCartney frippery just makes me irrationally angry.

  • MilaXX

I knew w/o clicking that was a Stella dress. She’s making it work as good as can be expected. I actually wouldn’t hate it if the fringe was removed. Allen look like the suitcase with his shoes got lost & he had to wear the ones he wore on the plane. Not liking Laura’s dress at all. Too long and shapeless.

  • Kirstin McAulay

Mr Leech is looking great… can’t wait to see him and Mr Cumberbatch on screen together!!

  • evave2

I swear on my mother’s GRAVE that I looked at Joanne Froggatt and KNEW it was Stella McCartney. I don’t know if I should hate you guys for teaching me to recognize her stuff. God I hate that white fringey thing. And I have begged and begged and begged and you never gave us the Stella McCartney collection Resort 2014 so that I could chortle (at least at the total inappropriateness of the shoes we saw on the couple of models you showed from the runway show). You are mean.

He looks like he was already wearing the shoes, put on the suit, and went out (and was glad the pants fit over the shoes). I agree boots would’ve looked better.

I know Victoria Beckham has good clothes. Everything about her stuff is impeccable. I just find it cold. I know that is not an adult response, because she does stand for a certain quality. But sometimes I could use a little passion in the designs, you know. No passion. But real solid workmanship. However, I have been surprised that when she came out with her design line that everything HAS been so good. (Side note: I thought he took a soccer job in the US so she could have what has become a huge fashion business. Good for him.)

Laura Carmichael looks like she is going to punch somebody. Meh on the shoes. (I generally like Erdem because it is so idiosyncratic. Don’t always like each dress, but feel the designer doesn’t have to put FRINGEY STUFF to sell the dress. God bless Erdem.)

    • MarieLD

I keep wondering why (and maybe I should post this on the FugGirls site), Duchess Kate never wears Posh’s designs. They’re ostensibly friends and the clothes are … well, posh. Kate would look great (I apologize for that) in Beckham.

      • suzq

Let’s just be thankful Duchess Kate NEVER wears Stella.

        • demidaemon

Indeed. She may be boring sometimes, but at least we know she has taste.

  • AC Simons

Over and over again, Stella is proven to be the worst designer. And yet, she still gets to dress people. There is no justice in this world.

  • boweryboy

I’ve stopped watching DA halfway through season two so I don’t know who Allen Leech is, but delicious. Love his shoes. If he swapped out the tie for one that matched his shoe color the look would be perfect. Although I’m not paying that much attention to his clothes anyhow.

    • suzq

He’s the chauffer with whom Lady Sybil ran off. They have a child together.

    • scoobynacks

Allen Leech has been there playing Branson since mid-way through season one so you definitely saw him. He was the guy that took Sybil to see the vote where she got knocked unconscious (and later that night Matthew/Mary finally made out). Sybil had to beg her dad not to fire Branson because she’s the one who lied to him.

      • boweryboy

        Wow. He cleans up nicely.

      • boweryboy

        Wow. He cleans up well.

  • beebee10

    Lady Edith for the win!

  • Sam Smith

I like the idea of color and prints, but I don’t like any of these dresses.

  • Shawn EH

I feel like Joanne is representing her people! The British Fringe Society!

  • quiltrx

Seeing the group pic, my mind screamed a la Brando “STELLA!” So not good. It’s like she tries to make each design unflattering to even the most lovely woman.
Love Michelle’s look, and she looks composed and comfortable–she used to look like she really didn’t enjoy the RC. I think that black strip was to give the vague impression of a belt, but it’s not wide enough I think.
Laura’s is kind of a sack, but kudos to her for looking really pretty in that extremely difficult color!

  • Ashleigh

    Stella needs to be stopped

    • anyalama

I… I just don’t understand. Why does she keep happening?!

  • kbshee

Do they not discuss what they’re wearing with each other before the event? I can’t help but think Lady Mary would have straightened the other ladies out.

  • RoseJB

Am I the only one who thought Michelle Dockery was wearing a huge, ugly earring (only one!) in that first shot?

  • Slade Thunderdragon

Is that the world’s largest tapeworm I see?

  • suzq

I knew Joanne was wearing Stella the moment I saw the fringe. How disappointing.

  • Stella Zawistowski

    (another f*cking terrible Stella McCartney)

  • somebody blonde

Is it just me who thinks that it looks weird when a man wears a jacket and vest in the same fabric but different pants? I would’ve liked Allen’s look a lot better if the vest or jacket were in a different color or something. It looks like he put on half a suit to me. He’s still cute, but it looks strange.

  • ashtangajunkie

Way to ruin an otherwise solid showing, Stella McCartney.

    • conniemd

She appears to have a fringe obsession this year.

  • Kelly

I love them all, so it pains me to be critical of their clothes. But I will bear the agony. To wit: Allen looks as if he’s wearing two totally different outfits: “staid banker in chilly autumn” and “working man dons his new jeans for a night out.” Laura: what’s with the fists? what’s with the SHOES? Joanne: *sob.* Normally, I think Michele Dockery is a walking style fail, but this time, I really like the whole look, from hair to feet. I’m glad she didn’t wear white shoes, because a) the dress seems to be cream rather than white, so they would have looked annoyingly off, and b) ugh, white shoes. Might as well just put paper boats on your feet.

  • BLauDGaspode

In my mind, I had given Michelle a belt. I actually had to go back and look because I couldn’t believe it when you said there wasn’t one on her already. If only we had superpowers that let us see outfits as they should be, instead of as they are in real life.

  • marlie

They all (well, all except one) look pretty great, minor quibbles notwithstanding. As for Joanne, her hair and makeup look good, but that dress is another monstrosity from Stella.

  • demidaemon

Well, Joanne failed, but that was a given, with that designer.

Everyone else is cute enough, but I question Allen’s choice of clothing considering the season, though I appreciate the effort.

  • I knew that window treatment was a Stella McCartney!

  • MightyMarshal

  • Jess White

Oh, what the hell, Stella McCartney? “With this dress, I wanted to convey the sense of a cruel prank played on an unwitting starlet by a sociopathic fashion designer. The splosh of fringe across the chest was inspired by Terry Richardson. It’s very postmodern, very ironic, very ‘I hate you because you pay me for this.'”

  • Judih1

I wasn’t a Stella hater like many of the BK’s. (I loved her collaboration a few years back with Adidas, even if was overpriced) But the last few dresses I have seen by her on this site has gotten me crossing over the irrational hate of Stella. Her dresses are just plain fugly – and expensive!

  • Judih1

Just a reminder (which I read here on TL) Michelle and Lupita have the same stylist.

  • lmhess

Spot on, guys, spot on! Although I personally think Allen could wear pretty much anything and I wouldn’t care.

  • RutGot

At least they’re all seasonally appropriate? I’m looking for a silver lining here.

  • JynxTheCat

wtf is wrong with Stella McCartney? More importantly WHY does anyone support her?

  • Is Stella McCartney taking the piss? (As the Brits say). I mean, Come on. Such a crime on Joanne’s cute little figure.

  • ms_kat

I thought Lady Edith was clenching little tiny fists of rage!

  • poorellensmith

Laura and Michelle have lovely heads. That goddamn Stella monstrosity is unforgivable.

  • Artsygrl69

With the shoes and the vest, I think Leech looks like a Hobbit. But I mean that in the nicest possible way.

  • LambeeBaby

Michelle Dockery’s dress looks like she could have picked it up in dress barn in the 80’s.

  • 2ranma75

I’m glad to see Joanne’s hair looking different
