Angela Bassett in Theia at Entertainment Weekly’s 2014 Comic-Con Celebration

Posted on July 28, 2014

In this, the summer of the white dress, the black dress, and, for the adventurous, the black-and-white dress, we cannot tell you how refreshing it is to see Miss Angela bring some brightness and vividness to the red carpet, which is how God intended it.

Gorgeous. The only thing we’d change is the shoes, which look a little cheap.

Actually, the more we look at it, the more we think her makeup might need some adjusting too. That’s some awfully dramatic and night-time face to be sporting for such a sunny, bright look. A toned down eye might not have been a bad idea.

We were flipping through the channels yesterday and landed on a truly awful movie from about 15 years ago starring her and James Spader. He looked hot and ripped and … well, absolutely nothing like he does now. She? Looked EXACTLY THE SAME. It was eerie as hell. Just admit you’re a vampire, Angela.

      Taste the rainbow girl.

      • Thomas

This dress is bringing out my sweet tooth.

    • Kitten Mittons

The bangs aren’t as big as last time we saw her, and I’m in LOVE. The shoes are terrible, and the skirt length isn’t the most flattering for her, but damn if she doesn’t look like a refreshing bowl of sherbet.

      Love that neckline on her.

      • Grumpy Girl

But the shoes are a lower heel, yes, so presumably they were comfortable for standing an extended time? But the color could have been so much more.

        • Kitten Mittons

So so much more. I’m all for lower heels, but not these ones with this dress. They look beige, or possibly metallic? Either choice was not meant for this dress.

I’d probably let Ms. Bassett slide with a matchy shoe. Not sure which color to pick, though. Maybe something bright that’s not in the dress? Possible yellow pump deployment time?

      • Glam Dixie

I thought the neckline made her look very broad shouldered and it was one of the only things I would have changed besides the shoes, of course.

        • Kitten Mittons

I liked it, maybe because it’s balanced by the fullness of the skirt. And it shows off those amazing arms. I can see your quibble (especially when she stand with both hands on her hips), but it doesn’t ruin the overall look for me.

If I were her, I’d never wear sleeves.

    • Anna

Rainbow Bright! Love the dress and the hair. I will be taking this photo to my hairstylist the next time I’m due for a cut, that fringe is perfect. Eye makeup does look a bit harsh with the dress.

I’m refusing to acknowledge those shoes.

      • Wink

The dress is great, but the shoes seem like an afterthought.

        • Anna

I get the sense that they were chosen for a more sensible heel (which I totally appreciate and respect). These look like Easy Spirit dress sandals. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with Easy Spirit, they do not go with the dress or Ms. Bassett’s kick-assness.

    • Bridget Smith

LOVE the colors on her, but multicolored dresses in this shape always read “Easter” to me. I think I’d prefer it as a sheath.

      • CakesOnAPlane

Ok, I’m glad I am not the only one who cannot take the candy-colored palette AND the frilly silhouette. It’s like a bridesmaid dress for Candy Land-themed wedding.

    • FibonacciSequins

Between the armor-reminiscent pattern of the bodice and her toned physique, I’m wishing she could have played Wonder Woman. She’s probably too short, but she would have been fierce.

      • Supernumerary

I maintain that if she, Gina Torres and Lucy Lawless could only have a magnificent love-child together, we would have our perfect Wonder Woman.

        • smayper

I heartily concur. And I adore Gina Torres and miss her in Firefly. She rocked a leather bodice. Is she in anything currently? Also, i love the candy colors of that dress.

          • Supernumerary

I’ve most recently seen her guest-starring on Hannibal as the wife of her actual husband’s (Laurence Fishburne) character. She’s transcendent in the role.

          • Anna

All my upvotes to you. Adore her too and love/miss Firefly so much.

          • oldscrumby

She’s on Suits if you want to watcher her in fancy suits, keeping a tight rein on some lawyer-bros.

          • TropiCarla

She was gloriously badass in Alias too.

        • Anna

          SO. MUCH. THIS.

    • smh4748

I like this dress a lot. Seasonally appropriate, and sort of reminiscent of cartoons without actually being one. Great work!

    • teensmom99

Given how she hasn’t aged, it’s hard to remember that she might need a comfortable shoe.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Terrible shoes. All those brightly coloured patents out there this season and she chose those? Even white would have been better, and I don’t say that lightly.

    • didgerdoni

Happiness in dress form. Love it. But girl, I have been there with the shoes. “Dammit, none of my shoes work with this. I’ll just throw on these old beige ones and hope the dress draws the eyes away from them.”

    • FrigidDiva

Maybe she sucked up all of James Spader’s youth? I was looking at pictures of him next to RDJ at ComicCon and I was surprised at how much older he looks, granted he had on this terrible grandpa looking hat that wasn’t helping matters. She is stunning though. I don’t know how she ever gets past sercurity though, not with those guns–wowza.

    • flamingoNW

Yup, worked on that movie. Spader was oh so very ripped. Facinelli too.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Pretty pretty! She looks amazing! Fun, colorful, relaxed. I love it. The shoes are such a missed opportunity!! On first glance, it looks like she’s not even wearing any. Any little bit of color would have save it!

    • NBG

OK, I’m glad you mentioned that fact that she is not aging, because I was totally thinking it. Blocking out the shoes but that dress is so fab with her skin tone and her badass arms.

    • http://fibonaccisequins.storenvy.com/ Danielle

That pink is absolutely her friend. More, more!!

    • Robin Ewing

She’s also bringing shoulders and arms to summer.

    • spirit52

From the knees up…love it. Those shoes look like church shoes for my grandmother

    • Henry Maler

She straight up does not age.

    • Gatto Nero

A refreshing cup of rainbow sorbet.
A simple, modern sandal would have brought this home.
But she looks amazing. (And those arms.)

      • smayper

She and Michelle Obama…bringing the arms. She doesn’t have to do cutouts or sternum baring, or anything…she’s just sexy as hell and likes herself.

    • KendraMR

I love that dress, but hate those grandmother church shoes and smoky eye makeup.

    • nannypoo

I really love this dress. No kidding about the shoes, though. They are just plain awful.

    • formerlyAnon

I laughed at the comparison between late ’90s Spader & late ’90s Bassett. Props to her, all the surgery in the world doesn’t keep the body trim without some effort. I’d have toned down the eyes and brought up the lips.

    • Dan_In_NYC

Complete jaw drop RE a muscular James Spader. Oof!

Regarding Angie, yes more flirty makeup and the shoes are not great. But the dress gets a head tilt and two snaps.

    • Danielle

Oh jeez, Supernova. God, that movie was a pile of crap. I’ve pretty much blocked out all memory of the cast except for LDP. Even with that much hotness (and talent) in the cast it couldn’t be saved. I still mock my friend to this day for making us go see it.

    • Denise Rambo

That is a GREAT dress but what the hell was she thinking with those shoes? Maybe she forgot to pack the ones she intended to wear.

    • stellavision

It’s beautiful AND seasonally appropriate! Doing the dance of joy.

    • MartyBellerMask

Even the dreaded nude &/or suede pumps would be better than those… those… I don’t even KNOW what those are, but they are truly the worst shoes I’ve seen in a while.

    • MartyBellerMask

Okay, I checked that link and WOW. James Spader was hot! *sigh*
And isn’t that just a time capsule of a cast? Wilson Cruz, Lou Diamond Phillips, (hot) James Spader & post-“The Craft”-era Robin Tunney.

    • Jennifer Bober

I love it. It’s so nice to see some vibrant color. I’m not a fan of the shoes either. A cute little strappy sandal would have been a better choice if she didn’t want to wear a heel.

    • Sam Smith

Really like the top and the colors, but I think the skirt is hitting her at wrong length or something (not doing anything for her legs).

    • MilaXX

Love her, but hate those shoes. Also that dress called for a clean eye.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

One of the greatest disappointments of my life was that Angela Basset did not play Storm in the X-Men movies…and she would STILL kick ass in that role. J’adore Ms. B.

      • DB Ruberto

I still weep daily for this.

    • Shawn EH

I know that movie. It’s so weird that she looked a little older than him then, and he looks like her Grandpa now!

    • marlie

Someone else who hasn’t changed from that cast… Lou Diamond Phillips. Rowr.

I like this dress on Angela, even if it’s a little bit “Easter Sunday.” But beautiful colors on her. And yes, ditch the shoes and maybe go with some strappy sandals or something.

      • FuhUgh

oops, should have read your comment first. I said pretty much the same thing…

    • evave2

I think the waist hits her a little high; agree about the shoes. BUT THE COLORS of the dress are so vibrant and beautiful.

    • Pound of Salt

      RIP sexy James Spader :(

    • Rhonda Shore

      I love the model’s hair.

    • KT

Yikes, I hate it. This doesn’t suit her at all, and it looks really garish to my eye. She’s inadvertently making a case for the black and white dress…

    • Jennifer Schiller

She looks like Rainbow Brite’s modern day cousin. And I love it. (Awful shoes though.)

    • EEKstl

God-awful shoes but otherwise stunning, as befits one of the most beautiful women on the planet (then, now and forever). Luv. Huh.

    • HeisenbergHattie

She’s has a swimmers torso & shoulders. This dress flatters her shape.

    • cocohall

I wish she had taken it a bit further and given us hair and shoes to match the fun of the dress. But at least she is getting into the spirit of Comic Con. And arms. Those are truly SUPERHERO arms. I bet even a lot of the ComicCon boys are jealous of her guns.

    • Imasewsure

Love the effort and the colors but not loving the dress on beautiful Angela however… but I hate hate satin so there’s that

      • ktr33

Is it satin? I thought it was shantung. Hm, my enthusiasm just dropped a notch.

        • Imasewsure

I put on my glasses and you are right it is some sort of silk but I still don’t love it. Up the enthusiasm though… it’s not satin!!

    • Sofia

This is not age appropriate. Next

    • NinjaCate

      Black don’t crack!

    • saintebeuve

All of the stills for that movie at IMDb are GLORIOUS. Thank you for that.

    • suzq

I love the dress, but those shoes match my aunt’s 1970s naugahyde handbag.

    • ktr33

Love everything but the shoes which look like something my grandmother would wear out for a special occasion once every 10 years. Plus they’re too small. Just weird choice. But LOVE the dress, on its own and/or on her.

    • GemFemme

Holy smokes she looks amazing! I like the smudged dark eye makeup. It’s a nice contrast to the brightness and color of the dress.

    • stickee

Lol @ Angela Bassett looking exactly the same. I think she really loved the Tina Turner look and just kept it forever.

    • http://www.metapolish.com/ MetapolishDotCom

      The lady is fierce…

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Dress is for a 14 year old!

    • Judih1

Agree – the shoes don’t work and the make up is too strong. But the dress is adorable and she is a female Dorian Gray

    • yllas

Oh! I am in love with this! Everything about it makes me SMILE!

    • Boris Sbarufatti

Vampire? I’ll stick with the fabulous and immortal Vodoo Queen, one of the few good things coming out of the last AHS season…

    • PinkyK

      Love!

    • FuhUgh

Lou Diamond Phillips is apparently also a vampire.

This outfit is one that would inspire a correct deployment of nude shoes, however, perhaps not THESE nude shoes…
