Sophie Turner in McQ Alexander McQueen at the 2014 Glamour Women of the Year Awards

Posted on June 04, 2014

We’re really torn on this one. We gasped at the overwhelming cuteness of the dress, but then we did the cocked-puppy-head “Hunh?” thing at that … that…

Just what the hell is that, you guys?

It’s a … belt? With cups? A bustier-belt? Who thought it was a good idea to give the impression that a woman has two smaller boobs underneath her actual ones? Udder Chic? We reject it.

Whatever that thing is called (busti-belt, we’re thinking), it’s awful and we’re really mad at it. Everything else going on here is major-league cute but once you see the mini-boobs you can’t really unsee them. Horrible.

The belt is weird but I don’t hate it as much as you do. The fact that it’s black and the shoes are brown bugs me more.

    • TAGinMO

The shoes read oxblood to me…which is still irritating, but not as bad as brown.

      • lunchcoma

After looking again, I think you’re right. That being said, I still think they look odd with the belt/bustier. Take the beltier off, get her a different clutch, and I think it would make more sense to me.

        • Coolekat

Brown is brown. I’m with you. Yuk.

    • MilaXX

Shoes reading a bit more red-ish to me as well and they pick up the color in the dress.

      • ChiKat67

I like the booties too! The boobstier belt works better on the model.

        • MilaXX

Yes because the model doesn’t have substantial boobies.

          • MoHub

Also, the version on the model doesn’t stop at the bottom of the belt the way it does on Sophie.

  • Sarah

“We reject it.” I ♥ that. I, personally, reject the raccoonery about her eye sockets.

    • It just reminds me of how pissed off I was at the bad girls wear black trope fuckery of earlier this week.

    • Glam Dixie

Agreed, and I’ll see your raccoonery rejection and raise you with bootie rejection. I hates them.

      • Sarah

I see your bootie rejection, and add a hair bump nay.

        • another_laura

I love you three and this thread-let. I’m all in.

        • EveEve

Boob belts be damned – I reject Catholic school-girl plaid field hockey skorts. Especially when the plaid isn’t hanging right or lined up properly (although they got it exactly right on the model).

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Is it time to say that the smoky eye is not the go-to look for a more casual look, or is that just me being my normal bitchy self?

      • Sarah

Oh, yes it is. My kneejerk on that for day looks is always a big ‘ol no. I don’t wear eye shadow unless I’m in a casino, or maybe fancy dinner, so it looks insanely overdone, to me.

        • demidaemon

I love that you put on eye shadow for the casino. 🙂

          • Sarah

Why, thank you. One has to represent when in Vegas, of course.

          • demidaemon

Of course. (And not in the Lea Michele way.) 🙂

          • Sarah

No, more in the Mary J. Blige way. (At least that’s what I tell myself.)

        • bitchybitchybitchy

When I was working fulltime I did eye shadow, line, mascara. Since I retired, most days it’s just mascara, unless I, or Mr B3 and I are going out someplace festive-then I break out the liner and shadow, too.
To me the smoky eye looks good for night, evening, but overdone for day, particularly if the person wearing it isn’t skilled at putting on makeup-it does take some practice, and the right tools.

  • Megan Kennedy

Most confident I’ve ever seen her look. Get it Sansa.

  • TM

I would comment on the awkward belt too, but we all know we should be on Sansa’s good side.

  • @Biting Panda

The devil is in the details.

  • Scimommy

Aww! It’s the world’s tiniest, cutest black leather bra. Borrowed from a tween Halloween Madonna costume, no doubt.

  • MilaXX

I like the look, bustier belt and all. I see your quibbles, but I think the look works overall even if a giant belt sans sweetheart curve would have been better.

  • FibonacciSequins

Her dress is trying to feel her up.

  • zuzu

Maybe she feels naked without some kind of corsetry these days.

  • melanie0866

    It’s a beltier.

    • Sarah

      Free Leonard Beltier!

  • Karen Belgrad

Is that the cincher that Bianca lent Adore?

    • demidaemon

Possibly. It sure looks like something imitating that effect.

  • Daisy Walker

The boots are way more offensive to my eyeballs than the belt.

  • Betsy

Welcome to the game, Sansa. I’m really surprised that I don’t hate this. Maybe I’m blinded by GoT love or the fact that she’s so darn beautiful but I kind of think she looks fresh and chic.

    • Exactly! Would I wear that, yes. So imho it’s cute LOL

      • Bridget Smith

I want the Black Watch one on the model SO MUCH, my God.

  • kimmeister

It’s like a bustier for people who only want their boobs supported under the nipple. Weird.

  • Glam Dixie

Bustier-belt was my first thought as well and rejecting it is a good call. Remove the flaps and replace the booties with cute red shoes and I love this.

  • blue808

I’m cool with the whole outfit from the ankles up….even the amazonian belt-bustier hybrid thingy…it’s part of the McQueen aesthetic after all. Those awful things on her feet though—a big hells no!

  • TinyDynamo

A leather Obi that grew boobs. So… a BoObi?

  • sienna elm

It looks fine on the model though. Maybe it’s a bustier for people with no/small breasts.

  • Oh come on nit-picky nitpickers! It’s a cute look all around. Go Sansa!

  • schadenfreudelicious

Its like the strapless bra that always migrates south, only this one is already there….

  • CeeQ

Hot shoes, but! An impersonation of my high school friend who always helpfully ended her sentences with “but” & a perky smile to somewhat deflate whatever hideous thing just happened.

  • Grumpy Girl

I find it much cuter on the model. It doesn’t look like it fits Sansa properly–see how it’s pulling where the top and the beltier/BoObi/whatchamadingit is hitting. To me, it reads an awkward length for that style of skirt, too.

Plus, as others have pointed out–bad eye makeup and boots that don’t go well (they have a whole other vibe than the rest, to me.)

  • GorgeousThings

It’s a bustier belt, but on a bustier woman it looks like a busty shadow.
I like the color of the original (modeled) dress better – this one, I dunno – kind of washes her out a bit. It just falls short of cute/fab. Hmmmmm…

  • vitaminC

Like most runway fashions, the bustibelt was never meant to be worn by a woman with hips or breasts. Look how they folded those lapels inward to cover her chest.

  • HerroEmmers

Scoff all you like, I unabashedly adore that sweetheart-bustier-belt-thing, and think it would be wonderful on a number of busty, broad-shouldered broads (such as myself, ahem). It seems like it works as kind of a minimizer, because a lot of times a straight-across belt can make boobs seem disproportionately humongous, whereas this nips in nicely at the waist and helps the eye work its way up to the bust rather than be assaulted by it.

    Whatever, I love it.

  • CO Gal

It’s a training bra/bustier/belt. A brabeltier. Tra la la boom de ay.

  • Zeee

I believe its a truss. A black leather truss.

  • Kbear

The dress is just too small for her on top. Also, you should really not see the waist seam at the front there – the “belt thingy” should really be covering that up.

    • ktr33

      yeh, that’s eating at me.

  • Those cups are made for an A, not a Big Gulp.

  • imspinningaround

  • Imasewsure

I think Miley asked her to hold her top and this poor girl thought it was a belt… as for the dress, love the print, hate the fit… oh and NO to the hair!

  • Danielle

I hate the shoes even more.

  • Griffinqueen

I can’t help myself. I have some weird Pavlovian response that makes me love McQeen + plaid+ leather.

    I am helpless to critique.

  • ktr33

I think it totally works on the model, maybe bc she has a much longer waist? or bc her version of the thingy is wider? Or, I guess, because she’s a model. On this Sophie, the thingy isn’t correctly placed; it’s like riding up and choking her.
I also love the black watch version 100x more.

  • sparkle_burnout

Way to ruin a spectacular look. Yeah the busti-belt is a big ol’ OUT.

  • nannypoo

The belt doesn’t bother me because I hate the dress anyway. Also the shoes. And her hair looks bad.

  • demidaemon

It looks like something a drag queen would do to imitate the hourglass shape of a woman. In other words, a young girl really shouldn’t be wearing this thing.

  • smayper

  • crash1212

Well, it’s a giant waist wrap, just as McQueen intended…silly. She looks great in this. Love the hair and makeup and those shoes are giving me life.

  • msdamselfly

THe colors of the dress look amazing with her eyes

  • LadyVimes

I love this, belt and all. She’s really growing into her looks, isn’t she?

  • OffToSeeHim

What’s the … level of the room, if you will… at this event? Somebody else was wearing a gown, and then this chick shows up in a romper. I don’t know who either of them is, but one of them presumably got it way wrong.

  • musi_

    i effing hate this

  • marlie

Get rid of the mini-boobs, and this would be a solid “attagirl.” As-is, the belt ruins the whole rest of the look.

  • Qitkat

A leather boob-corset? Best description in comments BoObi 🙂 Whatever it is the more I look at it the more I hates it, even the dress. I thought I liked the model’s better til I realized the hem wasn’t even laid out properly and cut straight, gasp!, on a McQueen! Huge failure.

  • Tanya Wade

Tit belt is distracting. But she’s such an English Rose in the face. Just lovely.

  • macwell

That belt is probably the worst stylist choice I’ve ever seen, in like ever – ! 🙁

  • Dagney

Girls Gone Wild at….the….Vatican? she is such a striking woman and her clothes are just ruining her looks.

  • a_liking

yeah, don’t dislike the belt nearly as much as the uncles. agreed it looks like a little bustier but the dress as a whole is super flattering.

  • Accademia di Moda

We absolutely LOVE this adorable plaid look with leather accents and great bootie! Such a fun twist on traditional plaid!

  • Jecca2244

her face is flawless though. screaming for an ad campaign.

  • kfizz

I absolutely love it. I think it accentuates her curviness and bust shape. It’s all brilliant, and she looks amazing. It’s perfect for her complexion, too.

  • Joycelyn Watterson-Woods

The bustibelt is terrible, just weird but not good weird. I’m wishing for a little sparkle by her face, smallish earrings or dainty necklace. Hair and make up look fantatic

  • Lex

The shoes are the big issue here, not the belt. From the feet up, she looks pretty hot. The shoes just ruin it all for me

  • Pterodactyl111

I like the bustier. I love the dress. The booties are really terrible. I hate booties.

  • Sophie

I would associate this particular tartan with Vivienne Westwood rather than Alexander McQueen, though I’m not sure why at the moment. As to the mini-boobs, I think they should be either bigger (like a real bustier) or not be there at all. This looks like someone couldn’t decide.

  • annrr

Way better shade of red for her hair, Strawberry blond vs the Menopause red she’s had this whole season. That thing on her waist looks upside down to me and those hooves need to to go.

  • CatLady

Glammed-up farm town schoolmarm. I like it, and kind of like the booties too.

  • redhead with tattoos

i think, based on the shot of the model, that the belt is supposed be a play on a corset but when you put it on a woman with an actual bust it looks like an ill-fitting bustier that has slid down the ribcage. unfortunate.

  • It only works if you have no boobs of your own. It doesn’t look weird on the model. She also picked the wrong color for the shoes. Runway look was much better. Tone it down a notch or two and real people could pull it off. If they have no boobs, that is.

  • MoHub

The term I would use is waist cincher.

  • carnush

She should wear that color blue all the time. It’s gorgeous on her. A plain black leather belt should have been employed here, if a belt is needed at all.

  • ScarlettHarlot

She should wear her hair up more, I think it’s really flattering to her face to have it pulled back.

  • Martha Anderson

it is a cute plaid and in the first glance a cute dress

but this dress should have been designed and tried on a woman with curves before going public. Miss Turner is a trim looking woman and this dress pulls and pooches over her abdomen. The belt rides up the pleats tent out and makes her, overall , look ill fitted and a bit out of shape .

  • MarissaLG

    Oh Sansa honey, no.

  • Raspberry2012

It’s a cummerbund/corset/bustier/belt all in one! It has many many functions… except stylishness! It doesn’t look any better on the model, but the model’s hem is at least straight. On Sophie, it looks like the cummercorsetbustbelt is making the front bunch up so that the hem is not only crooked, but she’s in danger of showing off the good china!

  • Paula Pertile

Yeah, that’s too bad. I wonder how it would look turned the other way, so the boob parts were pointing down? Maybe they’d just look like scallops.
    OK, no.
    Love the boots.

  • luluransom

I irrationally hate the shoes more then the beltstier. The color’s not contrasty enough to punctuate the look. Love the dress.

  • formerlyAnon

It’s a miss for me. I mind the overall proportions more than the belt specifically.

  • Nicole

A belt with delusions of bust?

  • suzq

I dunno…it’s McQueen, so I’m going with it. It would have worked with a longer dress. This dress is too small for the belt. The shoes are horrible. This event had no discernible dress code, did it? Everyone’s all over the map.

  • boweryboy

I’ve a strong dislike for Sarah Burton’s crazy obsession with wack-doodle-belts for quite some time now. They’re never really flattering and none of them look practical.

  • slowestloris

goddamnit I liked it til I read mini-boobs. Now I really can’t unsee it >:

  • semirose

Her makeup looks so good here and she looks adorable. The belt is…well if you don’t look at it for too long it’s not problematic

  • paintedfish

on the model, the busti-belt looks like very demi cups. sophie’s just too busty for it.

  • Pablo

    God those boots are uggly.

  • katiessh

It looks worst in that last photo. Even though it’s clearly supposed to go with the dress I think it kind of ruins the line of the skirt.

  • altermyego

Looks like she’s ready for the first day of school. The outfit needs those shocking blue boots and so do I.

  • I am waiting for Minnie Mouse to emerge from her torso.

  • judybrowni

    Barbie’s B&D Bustier.
