Rihanna in Azzedine Alaïa at Hard Rock Cafe Charity Event

Posted on June 05, 2014

It takes a special lady to wear head-to-toe leather, but Ri’s having quite the Style Moment ever since she won that CFDA and she’s making the most of it.

Love it when someone can switch up their look as seemingly effortlessly as she does, over and over again in the same week. She’s proving that she deserved that Fashion Icon award. To us, anyway. We’re impressed that she’s not resting on her laurels. Instead, she’s giving us all something to look at every time she steps out. This is the most “normal” look she’s sported all week, and it’s refreshingly low-key after the Khaleesi and Josephine Baker turns. It’s also just right for a place like the Hard Rock, showing a clear “dressing for the venue” skill.

Of course when we attribute all this to her, we have to acknowledge that she’s not making these decisions on her own and has a style team helping her out, if not dressing her outright. But we think she’s been strutting around in discussable fashion for so long now that at least some of her own thinking has got to be represented in the choices being made. In other words, after a while, some stars really do set themselves apart as having a true sense of style, independent of the consultants she pays to dress her. Cate Blanchett, for instance.

And with that, a hundred thousand Ri detractors just shrieked for our heads.

Well, it’s the most conservative outfit I’ve seen her in in quite some time…

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

For her, it’s practically Republican, lol.

      • Ha! Thought the same thing — she seems kind demure here.

  • NinjaCate

I completely agree Uncles. Though I have to say, I still hate that hair. I’m hoping it’s just a protective style until the reveals the amazing, over the top, head turning hairdo she’ll sport all though the #R8 poledance.

  • KinoEye

Nailed it once again. I’ve gotta say, Ri’s become one of my favorites on the site. Never boring, always something to talk about, and usually fierce.

Random, but she has the prettiest green eyes.

    • Introspective

and i find when she wears dark hair the eyes pop even more. love them too.

  • barbarienne

Enough ladystars have demonstrated that they either (a) badly overrule their hired stylists, (b) refuse to hire stylists, or (c) hire BAD stylists and aren’t smart enough to know it.

Even if Rihanna is being entirely dressed up like a doll by a team, she had the smarts to hire that team and listen to them.

But I’m going with the theory that she has Opinions, and they tend to work out well. While she knows how to switch it up, she still has a clear through-line of confidence and strength that only comes from liking what you’re wearing. She can’t possibly like EVERYTHING in the world; therefore she’s picking things she likes.

    • Carrie

Well said. Stylists can only take you so far. If you don’t have some innate sense of style yourself, you cam never quite move from “well dressed” to “stylish” because that innate sense of self is missing.

      • Tracy_Flick

        See: Lena Duhnam.

    • Thomas

Notice has Lady Gaga’s style has gone downhill since her stylist Nicola Formichetti left her. I used to think she had an innate sense of style herself, but in hindsight it seems like it was mostly the doing of a good stylist. I’ve considered Rihanna stylish since at least the Rated R era (2009) though, so I think she had a sense of style even before Mel Ottenberg was brought on to do his magic at the end of 2011.

      • I am sorry to be so ignorant (my fashion fare consists of TLo and the Fug Girls, not VOGUE & Cosmo), but how does one, as a mere mortal and not some industry insider, know which stylist is employed by a celebrity? Just asking.

        • Thomas

I’ve just read articles about both Rihanna and Lady Gaga that mention their stylists.

          • I see. Still, not having heard their names previously, I’d find it difficult to remember them after just one mention.

          • Thomas

I used to be a big fan of Gaga and I’m a fan of Rihanna, so I’ve read a lot of articles in Vogue and in different fashion sections on online newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times and The New Yorker, etc. Thus, I’ve seen their names several times. That’s how I remember them.

          • I see. Not being a fan (as in FAN!) does not help my not being on top of things.

          • jay

I am guessing you could also google “Lady Gaga’s stylist” and things would turn out alright.

          • 🙂

  • misstressofsylar

I love how she always looks like she’s enjoying herself. She’s puttig the fun back in fashion.

    • AmeliaEve

Enjoying herself indeed — that looks like a stoner squint to me.

  • decormaven

    Loving those cutout boots!

  • StellaZafella

    Okay…I want the shoes…………….NOW.

  • shuaib

The boots make me like it.

  • Thomas

She looks fabulous. Her face is just magnetic. And her stylist, Mel Ottenberg, says that’s she collaborates, she’s not just a puppet. If she doesn’t like something, there’s no changing her mind.

    • suzq

Mel’s a damn genius and she’s one incredible muse.

    • MilaXX

DId you see the vine of the making of her Swarovski dress? I cannot imagine the man hours that took.

      • Thomas

No! I’ll have to check it out!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’ll have to go back and re-read that NYT article about Ottenberg and Ri.

  • BLauD

I’m glad she seems to like it, but it looks ill-fitting and kind of tacky to me. All leather will do that. The only reason I don’t really, viscerally hate it, is because Ri-Ri is wearing it, which says a lot for her confidence and ability to carry just about anything.

  • NMMagpie

I can’t see that much leather without thinking about The Matrix. She looks awesome, however.

  • This would be one big leather snoozefest, if it wasn’t for the shoes and hair. And I don’t that her hair.

  • numenah

The leather does not look supple. That and its thickness are giving her beautiful bod a uniboob and a pooch. Yhe shoes are beyon fab.

  • Danielle

The shoes really pull this entire look together. She’s got such a fun sense of style. I’d love for her to dress me for a day.

  • cat772

Nopenopenopenope. Don’t like it at all. Both pieces are oddly cut and seem ill-fitting to me. Shoes are awful.

  • MilaXX

I gotta give it to her. She look fab. No where else could I imagine those shoes working.

  • suzq

<—Team Rihanna. Love huh. She's beautiful, talented and amazingly creative.

  • ElaineMarie34

Cute outfit, but man, I wish this woman would go read some books or something. She just seems so boring and vacant to me.

  • Imasewsure

Not loving the skirt but it’s a fun “simple” look anyway… She’s rocking the sh%t out of those boots…

  • Alloy Jane

The jacket is too boxy for my tastes and I’m not a fan of boots with cut-outs, but she is somehow pulling this off anyway. Oh, and if you haven’t seen it yet, google “Peter Griffin Rihanna” so you can see the funniest “who wore it better” ever. Cracked me up.

    • Thomas

It’s hilarious. She posted it to her twitter too.

  • TinyDynamo

Rihanna looks excellent. But Hard Rock Cafe? That’s still a thing? Or did the 1990s revamp bring that back too?

  • DagnyReardon

Long sleeved leather does not exactly say “Springtime in Paris.”

  • Glam Dixie

I’m having a hard time getting behind a full black leather outfit in June. I bet she smells bad. Sorry, it’s all I keep thinking.

    • CPK1

It’s been cold and rainy in Paris recently

  • FibonacciSequins

She’s giving me a Catwoman vibe here.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Ri’s definitely having her moment; I like the leather for the Hard Rock Cafe. Don’t hate me, I also love the shoes.

  • MK03

“Oh no, you don’t understand, this is an Alaia!”

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Oh, I want to be you, Rihanna. Next life maybe.

  • B_C_J

The outfit is hot but her hair is sitting on her head like some hairy, dead critter.

    • CatLady

Eh, you could argue that her hairstyle fits the venue. What’s more rock than lots of long flowing hair?

  • LadyVimes

Ehh I’m not such a fan of this one. It looks hot (as in, sweaty), and it’s not very interesting. Her other two were MUCH better.

  • understateddiva

Rhythm Nation realness. Well, sort of. Definitely a 90’s vibe.

  • elemspbee

    Her face–she’s looking so stunning!

  • ktr33

    she looks stoned to me.

  • SewingSiren

Do people still go to the Hard Rock Cafe? Because if I did I wouldn’t tell anybody.

  • cocohall

I’m going with the innate sense of style, because she rarely looks like the fashion is wearing her; she makes the fashion suit her. But she must have some good people helping her “curate” all the looks she must get offered from designers. It has to be mountains of clothes, shoes and accessories and just keeping track of it all must take a small village.

  • Hetha Innis

No shrieking here, you guys are spot on. As always!

  • KirFla

It just can’t be said enough, how pretty her face is! I get lost in those eyes.

  • quiltrx

It all looks really stiff and hot. The shoes are the shit, though.

  • marlie

Ri looks great, but I can’t help but think that she’s sweating her ass off in that outfit.

    (Edited for crappy autocorrecting.)

  • Jacob Bowen

That makeup is insanely good. It is so minimal yet brings out the BEST aspects of her face (which there are truly no bad aspects, to be fair). But wow.

  • littlevase

Her face is her best accessory. The outfit is okay. The shoes are good. They hit her calf at a very unflattering place though. They need to be a touch higher or a touch lower. What I wouldn’t give to get inside her shoe closet. Closet, who am I kidding. Her shoe room. Suite. Wing.

  • I think it’s easier to wear head-to-toe leather when you’ve got a 3′ length of glorious bare leg breaking it up. For me, the best thing about this look is that the boots aren’t peep-toes, but she does wear it well. I have a leather jacket of a very similar shape that is my favourite ever ebay purchase. It is not Alaia.

  • jay

Ha! I had seen bits of that but not the whole thing. SO CUTE.

(Also, boy in the red pants with Avril, I think it was the third one down? Call me. I’ll get all up in your business even if Avril won’t.)

  • Beardslee

To me she is always in costume but that is the nature of her life so I agree with you. It’s not my cup of tea but she does it very well. But alas, even she falls victim to long sleeved heavy clothing in summertime.

  • HeisenbergHattie

Rihanna owes a lot to her hairdresser!

  • queeniethebold

Is that her real hair? Or is part of it real and part of it not real?

    • OhSheila

The length is definitely not hers. Edges might be, though

  • Andrea Lentz

I LOVE THIS. Also her face has been particularly flawless lately. damn she really is beautiful.

  • Wink

It’s June. This leather outfit looks hot… not the good kind.

  • barbarienne

I hereby declare that the best thing ever.

  • kategs

I don’t know….she’s quite simply never done it for me. Rational boredom.

  • Sunraya

I think to call her a fashion in is crazy! She has worn the most absurd clothes I’ve seen! But at least in this, I don’t have to see her nipples and butt crack, so it’s an improvement.

  • Juliette Wojciechowski

Dear heavens! Does Avril think her fans have cooties? Bed bugs? Lice? Full on slight intended to Avril – if you don’t want to have anything to do with the unwashed masses, then don’t fleece them $400 to take photos which are only missing a thought bubble saying “Ugh” above your head.

Thanks to JauntyJohn, I’ve gone from clutching my pearls about Rihanna to “slow clap” admiration. Rawk on, Island Girl!
