Maggie Gyllenhaal in Chloé at ‘Boyhood’ Opening Night Screening

We feel like all the pieces here would be better off paired with something else.

Except the shoes, which are straight-up ugly. Sorry. Didn’t see any reason to be coy about that one. Are we wrong? She looks like she has a still-dying animal on each foot.

As for the rest of it, we CANNOT TELL YOU how bored we are by another white dress on the red carpet. This has become, like the nude shoe was for a time, the default red carpet setting for too many lady-celebs. We don’t mind it when it’s deployed well (just as we don’t mind it when a basic black dress is well-executed), but that’s the problem with these default style settings. They don’t encourage much interpreting or questioning. It’s just. “Get me something white.” Or at least, that’s what it feels like half the time. She looks like a cruise director.

We’re not in love with the dress, but we can see her having real fun with that jacket. There are so many ways to pair it up more effectively than this. Over a B&W print dress, for instance. Or skinny black pants.
