Maggie Gyllenhaal in Chloé at ‘Boyhood’ Opening Night Screening

Posted on June 19, 2014

We feel like all the pieces here would be better off paired with something else.

Except the shoes, which are straight-up ugly. Sorry. Didn’t see any reason to be coy about that one. Are we wrong? She looks like she has a still-dying animal on each foot.

As for the rest of it, we CANNOT TELL YOU how bored we are by another white dress on the red carpet. This has become, like the nude shoe was for a time, the default red carpet setting for too many lady-celebs. We don’t mind it when it’s deployed well (just as we don’t mind it when a basic black dress is well-executed), but that’s the problem with these default style settings. They don’t encourage much interpreting or questioning. It’s just. “Get me something white.” Or at least, that’s what it feels like half the time. She looks like a cruise director.

We’re not in love with the dress, but we can see her having real fun with that jacket. There are so many ways to pair it up more effectively than this. Over a B&W print dress, for instance. Or skinny black pants.

The blazer has beautiful lines, but it doesn’t go with the dress. Skirt length is a little long, too. And I agree about the shoes.

    • SuzyQuzey

      Shoes are hideous.

    • crash1212

First: wash your hair. Second: wash your face. Third: Take that really cute jacket and pair it with something – anything – else. Fourth: Keep the dress as it’s totally your style and wear it bare or if you must with a cute 3/4 sleeve cardi. Fifth: Burn the shoes. Salt the earth.

    • Jennifer Bober

I liked the shoes until I saw the closeup. The color was welcome. The jacket and dress really don’t work together. I would have loved it with a colored jacket. That jacket would look great with a slim pant or even jeans.

      • Grumpy Girl

Exactly. When I thought they were a turquoise print, I was like, nice color. Then I looked closer and thought, ick, dead imaginary reptile.

Turquoise would look so lovely on her, with her eyes–if not in her clothing, then in jewelry (which seems quite missing here.)

I cannot possibly love you enough for this comment…consider yourself King of the World today, and I am groveling at your feet.

      • Raspberry2012

You know, I have to admit this – you’re one of those Kittens where I just scan the board for your avatar so I can see what you’ve posted, because I know it’s going to be awesome!

    • Thomas

It looks like she’s wearing a nightgown under a blazer. Might be practical for an office job!

      • Constant Reader

One that’s super-stressful and demands long hours so you go home and go straight to bed. This dress would be handy for that.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I want to see a sassy Maggie. Turquoise jacket, skinny pant, white tank and you know, just to be contrary, those shoes. I kind of like them.

      • Constant Reader

I thought they’d look good with a skinny black pant too. Sassy!

    • imspinningaround

Are those shoes Aerosoles? I applaud you for repping the comfort footwear, Maggie, but did you have to pick the ugliest, cheapest-looking print in that tiny little catalog?

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I never heard of this brand but I googled because if they did have these wedges without the spray paint I would probably buy them.. :)

    • Alyssa

I want that blazer. I would wear it with skinny pants and a fun, patterned shirt!

      • conniemd

I love that white blazer. Don’t have one, though I have lots of suit jackets. Love them and pairing mix and match with pants, skirts, dresses all the time. Best item of clothing next to the LBD for utility. This blazer makes me want one.

        • marlie

One morning this week I actually said out loud “what I need is a white jacket.” Too bad this one didn’t just pop into my closet; it would have finished off my look perfectly.

    • lunchcoma

Those whites aren’t even the same shade of white.

      • Raspberry2012

        That makes me nuts!!!

    • @Biting Panda

      She looks like a tampon.

ETA, if you haven’t seen the trending commercial about the young girl faking her first period, go now. I’ve cackled every time.

It hurts me to say this, Maggie, but Angie wore it better to her conference.

    • Introspective

A skinny black pant, a shoe in that color combo (just not that godawful easy spirit pair she currently has on) and that fierce as fuck jacket and Mags would be making this look SING.

As it is now, bleh with a side of WTF is on your feet girl…

    • nannypoo

I’m sorry, but you can’t just smear on some lipstick and go out to get your picture taken. Pencil in some eyebrows, add concealer and foundation, a little blusher, maybe some eyeshadow. Girl, do I have to tell you everything?

      • kimmeister

The (lack of) eyebrows are my #1 makeup complaint with her.

      • FrigidDiva

Your comment makes me think of Jeremy Renner and his interview with Ellen awhile back. He used to be a make up artist and she asked him what his make up tips for women were, and it was pretty much what you said.

I would really love the shoes *if* not for the ugly spray paint dots of blue and brown. :)

The jacket is stick me in a freezer fabulous. It is like someone throwing a bucket of water on you when you really desperately need it. If the dress were aqua green or turquoise, this would be KILLA.

      • Sarah

“stick me in a freezer fabulous” is awesome.

    • AlisonS

Skinny black pants and a sassy tee were the first things to pop into my mind when I saw the jacket! Those shoes are total bargain-bin payless shoes.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Those shoes would work with a better outfit. But it would have to be a whole lot better outfit.

    • Danielle

She looks so greasy and sweaty. Blotting papers and dry shampoo, honey.

      • housefulofboys

I’m going to giver her the benefit of the doubt just in case it is really hot, not to mention she’s wearing a jacket. I have thin hair like hers, and I “wilt” (translation = sweat profusely) into a damp mess when I get hot. My hair would have to be Aquanet-stiff to counteract the effects of heat and humidity, and Maggie just isn’t an Aquanet kind of girl.

    • OffToSeeHim

See, I’d wear those shoes to work. But her hair is awful. I think you’ve gotta give people a pass on having a shiny face, because unless celebs have discovered something the rest of us haven’t, there’s no way not to be shiny if you’re outside at all these days.

    • Constant Reader

Why does she always seem to be doing whatever she can to stop anyone from noticing how beautiful she is? Especially when “beautiful” is actually in her job description.

    • FibonacciSequins

      Parent teacher conference outfit.

    • alliekat9090

Can’t help it . I love her. She always looks so……comfortable. As for the shoes, maybe they arent chic but they are a welcome relief from strappy sandals and pointy 4 inch pumps. I wish the ensemble wasnt white , it would look better with color, but that’s OK too.

    • Alloy Jane

I blame Angelina Jolie for the white on white thing. Love the jacket, hate the dress and of course, those horrible shoes.

    • Man Dala

In general, I find her as plain as an arrowroot biscuit.

    • housefulofboys

      I covet her jacket.

    • demidaemon

I feel like, if the dress got a solid hoik, it would be miles better.

    • Sophie

It reminds me of the Angelina Jolie outfit at the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict – all white, blazer, slightly-too-long skirt,… Except, of course, that they are wearing it to completely different events.

    • DagnyReardon

The 80′s called and they want their shoulder pads back.

    • marlie

You know, I like this for her. Yes, it’s all white, but it’s still working for her. The dress has some of the hippie-chic she likes, and the jacket gives it a little polish. And I eve like the shoes.

    • ktr33

I covet the dress. Maybe she’ll get to keep it (do such things happen? or is there a chance in the universe that she bought and paid for it? either way, I hope she donates it to the Housing Works in my neighborhood and I happen to be walking in a second later. I’ve scored some pretty high-end items there, and I like to think/imagine/pretend they were her donations.

    • ktr33

oh, and the Chloe website very helpfully tells us we can take this dress “through to evening with metallic heels.” Maggie’s stylist missed that suggestion.

    • P M

Goddamit Maggie you were doing so well!

    • MilaXX

These pieces need to be separated. I think I’d like the dress/shoes together sans jacket, but I’d like to see the jacket paired with skinny jeans or slim cut pants.

    • DeTrop

Love the jacket. Like the dress. Not together. The shoes are terrible.

    • altermyego

As we’ve heard so many times on Project Runway, “I wanted to mix soft and hard”.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

    • Danielle West

Looks like she’s headed to City Hall to get married on her lunch break.

    • sk8tfan

One gust of wind in those shoulder pads and she’s airborne, like the Flying Nun.

    • RescueMe23

I don’t believe 90% of the population (including myself) looks good in pure snow white. An entire outfit of it is too much. I need my sunglasses. And yes, these all white dresses, etc. are tragically boring.

    • MoHub

Oh, dear! Are ’80s shoulder pads coming back? I’m starting to see a lot of them, and this is not a good thing—even for narrow-shouldered women like me.

    • GillianHolroyd

A floaty chiffon dress and a tailored jacket (and too long to boot), ugh. Pick one or the other. Or pair it with a jeans jacket if you want to go all cliched.

    • KES4K

Just proving that, fashion mags be damned, you can’t just “toss a blazer!!!” over every summer dress.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

The thing that bugs me about this, and Angie’s outfit from the conference, is that in Australia there is a female-run funeral directors called White Ladies, and this is pretty much how they dress.

    • Watts

Her posture has always bugged me and in that first picture it’s really on full display. When you have a hunch like she does you should never ever wear something with stiff shoulders that emphasizes just how much in front of the rest of your body your head is.

And in the second picture I hear myself saying “Shoulders back,” because once again, the cut of that jacket is emphasizing her slump.

    • ashtangajunkie

I think I would like the dress for her if it had been styled better to suit Maggie. And if those shoes were lit on fire and thrown out a window.

    • Shawn EH

Like the shoes, hate the dress, can’t tell about the jacket. She’s trying, but this one didn’t come together.

    • traceyishere

She needs help but she needs to ask for it or why bother?

    • FancyPhilly

I was liking it until you said cruise director. Now I can’t unsee it.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The jacket paired with skinny black pants, a patterned and more body conscious dress would work better. Maggie, you’ve been progressing nicely lately…NO MORE boring white dresses, ok, sweetie?

    • Raspberry2012

Everything’s too big and shapeless, and yes, the shoes are tragic. It looks like she got the invite to the event while she was in the car, the only store opened to buy an outfit was Dress Barn, so she just ran in there and made do with whatever she could find – which was a size too big anyway, but she hoped no one would notice.

    • fananafanafophalec

Thought you said that “all the pieces would be better paired with someONE else”. still gonna stand by that read

    • judybrowni

      And, Maggie please, stop slumping!

    • Gorengirl

      Loathe the shoes….
