For some reason, it looks so much … stiffer on her than it does on the model, but we think it really works. It’s something of a style cliche to put large hoops or danglies on the ears of black women with short hair – especially dark-skinned black women. It’s something you see constantly in style editorials or runway shows featuring women of color. We’ve always felt it was notable how rarely her style team ever went in that direction, as if they were actively trying to avoid the cliche. We’ve gotta say, though; cliche or not, she looks spectacular with big ol’ hoops in her ears – but we suppose that’s not remotely surprising.

We can’t get a good shot of the shoes and people’s feet almost never look good from this angle (which is why we usually try to procure shots of the shoes), but while these are matchy and a little strappy, they look pretty appropriate for the venue and the look.

    It’s a little Lamp-y but it’s fun and summery.

    • Carleenml

a lamp-y tank top. (yes, I am old and get off my lawn)

    • sugarkane105

      I love lamp.

    • zuzu

Well, she’s won a major award!

      • Ginmaru

        “Fra-gil-e! Must be Italian.”

      • Trent

“A major award,” heh…I adore this woman, but IMO when she starts making appearances in June for the “Maui Film Festival Rainmaker Award” she is flirting with overexposure. Like, Anne Hathaway 2013 levels. Lupita, you might want to have your publicist dial it back a few notches…

        • mtraptor

hey, why turn down a chance to go to Maui?

  • lecoffeeaddict

Stiffness aside, this is her perfect color pallete. She is an absolute goddess in blue.

  • Glam Dixie

The hoop earrings are just about the only thing I like here. That shirt she is wearing as a dress needs some kicky little shorts or pants under it. And it stands out too far from the body, I really don’t like it or the shoes either.

    • demidaemon

Well, according to the model shot, it seems it was meant to be a dress. But I agree with you on the general dislike of the outfit. It’s not as bad as some of her most recent misses, but it’s not great either.

      • Glam Dixie

Oh I didn’t mean to imply that it isn’t really a dress, just my smart ass way of saying it’s too short.

        • demidaemon

Oh, I see. Sorry! But, yeah, it is too short on BOTH ENDS.

    • Kent Roby

I get that her stylist thought that the cliche of bugle-beaded palm trees would be perfect for Maui, but this garment has all the “charm” of an Ugly Christmas Sweater.

  • thecitysleeps

I don’t know. I don’t love how the top part is hanging on her, and the straps seem too clunky for me. I like the fabric and the colour a lot, especially on her but the shape is a bit non-shapey. And I still dislike the shoes. Love the earrings and the lips though.

    • DuBey2

This. Straps are just not right, on her or the model, and they are therefore unflattering to the sternum area on these slender women. These straps & their placement would also look horrendous on “curvy” women. That’s not anyone’s dress — but it could be, with a re-work: PR contestants, you have 15 seconds. Ready, GO!

  • sugarkane105

The color is pretty and the dress is certainly on-point for the event, but I wish it was a smidge longer. The shoes look god-awful.

  • Reine Bron

    I haven’t liked any of lupita’s post-Oscar fashions.

    • Imasewsure

Thank you…. she’s gorgeous but she may need an Oscar-level pole dance to get it really right

  • amanda siegelson

i hate this outfit. there, i said it.

    • rockin robin

    • Thomas

This outfit screams “fashion victim” to me.

  • elleg929

It’s a bedazzled bath towel. Sorry boys.

    • leahpapa

      Blanche Devereaux’s poolside coverup.

      • CelandineM

Blanche’s cover-up would be longer and beautifully draped and flowy, not this stiff crap.

        • Danielle

And probably have Velcro straps so she can make a quick exit in case one of the sailors at the Hacienda Hut fancied a quickie in the deep end.

          • demidaemon

You got it! It always pays to be prepared.

  • emilyaGoGo

While I have nothing against sternum-baring looks, I think both Lupita and the model could have benefitted from the straps being about an inch shorter (and, therefore, the hem being an inch or so longer….). Proportions, as is, just seem a bit off.

    • demidaemon

I agree. I’d like the straps shortened and the top end raised and more fabric at the bottom.

    • Trickytrisha

I hate myself for being so bothered by lovely Lupita’s sternum. But, yes… this look would have been vastly improved by your suggestions.

      • AnneElliot

OK, I am amending my response. I loved it at first, but I’ve since gone back and you’re right. Straps to low, hem too high. But I love the color and the breezy tropical-ness of it.

  • Kim Elmore

    Mmmmm, plumeria

    • GeoDiva

Its’s actually puakinikini not plumeria. Their fragance is my favorite and much sweeter than the plumeria.

  • Danielle

Easy and breezy, just the way I love my Lupita.

  • giddypony

I could totally paint a barrel, add straps and.make that look. Of course I’d look like a 50year old.woman in a barrel but still…

    • demidaemon

Well, you wouldn’t be out of place on Popeye OR Gilligan’s Island.

  • Gatto Nero

I love the color on her, as well as the palm tree appliques, and the styling is perfect. She looks adorable.
But I wish the dress were a little less stiff and the proportions were better.

  • Introspective

despite a few quibbles, i think this is pretty on her. so im happy cause Lupita.

  • James

Sorry but no. I don’t like that dress, where’s the shape and I hate those shoes. The head is amazing though.

  • SouthernGirlRena

It says a lot about her ability to wear dresses that she looks this good in a beach towel wrapped around an old lady (with thick straps) swimsuit.

  • Noah

That is… an ugly ass dress. Even Lupita is not strong enough to make that gift shop lampshade with straps work.

    • Glam Dixie

No one is, it is truely hiddy.

  • gabbilevy

She’s in Hawaii and dressing for it. Can’t hate.

  • kimmeister

The shoes appears to be espadrille wedges in a dark coppery-pewter to match the palm trees on her dress. I’m kind of a sucker for espadrilles so I can’t hate.

    • SugarSnap108

LOVE me some espadrilles. For once, I wish we had a better shot of her shoes.

  • LeeS99

Guys, come on. This dress and the shoes are Fugly.
We love Lupita but she has been wearing some questionable outfits since the Oscars. Maybe she no longer has access to the studio provided glam team.

  • decormaven

I’m good with this, given the venue. I am ready to see her rock some more formal frocks, though.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

That one strap is thicker that the other is making me wince. This is a cute look but ill-fitted.

    • SugarSnap108

It’s making me insane. What is the point of a ‘design element’ that looks like a construction mistake?

    • ktr33

EW! You’re right! How did I not notice that? Distracted by how Lupita doesn’t look as radiant as usual.

  • boweryboy

It’s bit too literal for me – Maui/sparkly palm trees, and the mismatched straps are stupid, but she does look stunning.

  • Nicole Sauvage

Trust Lupita to look better in a lampshade than anyone else possibly could. But why not shorten the straps an inch and add a pair of black satin shorts? As a bonus you’d be creating a reason for formal shorts to exist!

  • MilaXX

She seems to be having a blast in Hawaii and looking good while she’s at it.

  • alyce1213

No, Non, Nyet. It’s a fancy, matronly skirt that was made into a dress by adding black straps. Pretty from the lei upward, though.

  • Mrs. Julien

Is it just me or does it look like one of those towel/robes? But a really classy one.

  • I love the idea of it, but not the reality. The color is great, the motif is fun, but the dress looks like she cut out the bottom of one of those old souvenir straw beach totes and wore it as a dress.

  • LadyVimes

I don’t like it on the model and I don’t like it on her. It’s a sparkly blue bag. *grumps*

  • OffToSeeHim

I wonder if maybe they lined it for her. I think it looks better on the model, it’s a little stiff here.

  • Imasewsure

I just haven’t drunk the Lupita Koolaid I guess… not working for me although the idea is really cute… lampshade

  • jencapture

While the concept is lovely, there is something…off about this look. For an alternate view, check out the photos of lovely Lupita wearing a scalloped white bikini on the Maui beach. C’est chic!

    • alyce1213

I saw those – beautiful! And no cartwheel shot.

  • LeelaST

This looks like a beach cover-up or an apron.

  • gsk241

The color is pretty, but it looks like a towel or beach coverup or something. Not flattering.

  • ktr33

This is pretty smashing, and whatever shoes she’s wearing they’re much better than those baby pink pumps on the model. My only thing is… she doesn’t look her usual radiant self. Like a little under the weather??

  • Vanja

I love the blue on her, but I hate the decorations on that dress. It reminds my of those hideous 70’s string art.

  • Heather

Plus, a tiare lei is the best accessory!

  • GillianHolroyd

Beaded pillowcase is what I’ve got. Looks stiff and scratchy.

  • alliekat9090

I swear if anyone else wore this they would look ridiculous. It looks perfectly cute on her. How does she do that?

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Its so stiff. It kind of looks like she’s wearing a barrel.

    • CanIbeFrank

Yes! A pretty barrel, but a barrel nevertheless.

  • Cheryl

She’s a joy. No matter what she’s wearing, it’s always something worth noting, good or bad. Even on off days that smile dazzles. On topic: she looks adorably beachy here; it’s Hawaii! I would have worn flip flops.

  • smayper

    Disco apron.

  • demidaemon

I don’t love it. It’s not a total miss, but I don’t like how the design was meant to sit so low on the bust. I’m sure it was comfortable for the occasion, though.

  • aesteve212

Her hair!! I love how perfectly and subtly coiffed it is here – she always has such a distinct style each time. Short haired ladies have trouble with that sometimes – never Lupita.

  • smh4748

I don’t like the shape of this at all. It could have worked if it was a little longer, perhaps. That said, this color sings on her, and the motif is cute and fun for the venue. I just wish the color and decoration was on a better dress.

  • SophieCollier

She’s posted better shots on her facebook page. The shoes are pretty cute, actually.

  • deech_sea

She is a breath of fresh air. My feet feel less tired already. The look feels Pacific Islander to me, so I think the cliche mentioned above is avoided.

  • SierraDelta

I give her bonus points for wearing her lei properly (it shouldn’t rest against the back of one’s neck). But then, she’s Lupita, Goddess of Fashion, so I expected nothing less.

  • Anna

Gold hoops on women of color – with short hair or afros – is probably one of my favorite looks. Yes, it’s cliche, but it’s really eye-catching – especially on Lupita!

  • AnneElliot

I loved it at first, but then I read some of the other comments and I agree — I want to hoik the straps up and pin them so it isn’t so low. (I’m a little tired of the sternum look). Also a little too short, though I love the hoops — the shoes, not so much. But I hate platforms.

  • altermyego

I think the color is stunning on her. But who put the pink shoes on the model?

  • E. D.

It looks too short to have any movement, even on the model.

  • lilazander

The dress looks better on her than it does on the model. Gosh, she’s graceful!

  • nycfan

She is so lovely and I love the colors and outfit, except (I know, bad angle) the shoes, but I have a shoe-specific preference for her that she avoid ankle straps. As a general rule, I think ankle strap shoes have not been flattering to her physique (shoe’s fault, not any criticism of her appearance intended).

  • Watts

Somewhere, Lena Dunham just pointed out her screen and said, “WANT.” And no one will convince her otherwise.

  • marlie

The dress looks a little like a fancy beach coverup, but Hawaii seems like the only place where that might not be such a bad thing.

  • Akemi

    SO CUTE. I want it.
