Lucy Liu in Antonio Berardi at the “Meena” New York Premiere

Posted on June 27, 2014

As celebrity style blog-bitches, we are required to finger-wag at Miss Lucy for her lack of range. It’s in the union rules. Yes, there’s a fashion blog union. The fees are astronomical and everyone takes four hours to get ready for a meeting, but the goody bags make it all worthwhile.

Do we wish she’d embrace color a little more? Absolutely. But when someone finds a signature look and manages to render it impeccably time and time again, how much room do we have to bitch about it? She looks great. She always looks great. She favors B&W and she consistently makes it look chic, so T & Lo need to sit the hell down and shut the hell up, wouldn’t you say? Just this one time.

    She looks fantastic!

  • Kitten Mittons

There’s some weird fit issue with the straps, and it’s bunching up under arm or something. This is otherwise so flattering, though, I don’t think I care.

    Those accessories WILL be mine.

    • marlie

It’s like that on the model too. It bugs a little, because I can’t figure out why on Earth that would be a deliberate design element.

      • Kitten Mittons

Agreed on all points. I noticed that too, and it bothers me. At least we know it’s not Ms. Lucy’s fault, I suppose?

      • livesarah

Could it be… I don’t know if such a thing is possible… That the designer has made it for women with bigger-than-B-cup boobs?

        • Kitten Mittons

        • marlie

Ha. Maybe. But I don’t think that was the purpose, either. The designer would have certainly made sure that the dress fit the model *perfectly,* which leads me to believe that it’s *supposed* to look like that, cup size or not.

ETA: What I’m trying to say is that it looks like poor workmanship, not a deliberate design element (even though it is).

    • evave2

I love the organgie bag. I love the shoes.
I agree about the shoulders but it could just be the way she is angling her body.
Her figure is real and killer; she looks fit but not crazy fit.

      • Kitten Mittons

Yes, she looks real and beautiful, always does. I’ll share the accessories with you, we can trade off weeks.

  • LadyVimes

She’s always so pretty. It’s not fair.

  • BlairBear

I love her and I love those shoes . The rest looks great

  • Shawn EH

Lucy Liu sees your finger-wagging, and smiles with blithe indulgence.

  • hughman

She was smart to realize Serious Directors don’t wear sheer skirts showing off their granny panties at the openings of their first film.

    • BlairBear

      I didn’t know she directed a film . That’s awesome

      • Cynica

The movie tells the story of a girl featured in Nick Kristof’s book “Half the Sky.” She had been kidnapped into the sex trade when she was 8. I think Lucy’s position as director and the subject matter of the film practically require serious and understated black & white.

        • BlairBear

          Ahh sounds interesting

        • demidaemon

Hmmm, I like it a little better now, knowing her position in the event. Makes a bit more sense. Still not totally forgiving of the white.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    SO lovely.

  • MoHub

It’s a bit low and wide in the neckline, but she still looks great.

  • TLJezebel

At least a touch of lipstick, amirite?

  • Denise Alden

I don’t know about sitting down and shutting the hell up, but she is so, so, so pretty, isn’t she? It’s hard to see past that face.

  • International Model

She should have drinks with Li Bingbing.

    • marlie

No – Fan BingBing. Li BingBing doesn’t deserve to hang out with Lucy with the crap that she’s been sporting lately.

      • Cynica

Perhaps Lucy could help educate the poor dear in the proper way to dress.

        • demidaemon

But then who would entertain us with her unrepentant tackiness?

          • livesarah

There is an awful lot to be said for ‘interesting’, isn’t there, even if it’s not GOOD interesting…

          • demidaemon

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

      • International Model

That’s actually why I’d want Li over Fan – bring out the cray.

  • Kristen

Those shoes are everything. Her character in “Elementary” is my fictional style goddess.

  • ChaCha_70

I want to SO “be her”…Okay, and do her.

  • Danielle

I like the clutch a lot, though.

    • decormaven

Ditto. Wish she had picked a similar perky color for the pedi. This outfit needs a bit of a boost; maybe she was going for Serious Artiste here.

  • JR Labrador

Hemline’s too long, needs to be above the knee. The Union will file a grievance.

  • marlie

I really don’t like the way that the straps sit… it’s the same way on the model. Otherwise, the fit is great, and it suits her slightly more old-school classy style. Lucy herself always looks gorgeous, though.

    • SugarSnap108

It’s driving me crazy. But it looks, on her and the model, like a deliberate design choice. The tips of the black fabric are poking forward, in a weird 3D way, because of design (I think) and not weird fit.

      • marlie

I think you’re right. That’s the only thing that’s ruining an otherwise perfect little dress.

  • Mothra

She looks not very happy. She needs more fun.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Nothing wrong with wearing your signature look as well as Ms. Liu is wearing this dress, and I love her makeup, just playing up her natural beauty.

  • Alyssa

I love the clutch, especially against the B&W dress. Looking through her tag on here, there is just so much pretty! Love her.

  • Kathie

Great dress. Great shoes. Little pop of color with a purse. Hair and makeup look great. No finger wagging here.

  • TinyDynamo

She is just SO lovely. And always so beautifully styled. I heart her.

  • funwithpurses

Confused by pointy bunny ear/boob eyelids? Better on the model, but either way – proportions of white satin band bug.

    • demidaemon

  • SuzyQuzey

    Love the shoes!

  • crash1212

As I am not a member of your union, I am free to say….Rock on Miss Lucy! You continue to dazzle with your perfect sense of style.

  • lexilexi

The top seems a little weird… are those pleats or gathers on the side of the boobs?

  • Tracy_Flick

I considered quibbling about the bunching of the white fabric, then realized she looks better than I’ve ever looked in my life (including but not limited to my wedding), and decided to STFU.

  • msdamselfly

    this fits her very well

  • NurseEllen

This looks like a Vivienne Westwood LBD with her characteristic points over the bodice, which someone took and added white satin all around. Which doesn’t make it a bad dress at all, but it doesn’t do much to make the fit across the top and around the armholes very good. LOVE the shoes. I hope she wears a 7-1/2 and can pass them to me when she’s finished.

    • Linda LaPaz

The fit on the top and straps bugs.

  • Anna

  • MilaXX

She looks great I don’t care about her limited color palette. She bust out color on occasion. Remember the blue Herrera gown?

  • Alicia

Weird bodice – I don’t think anyone really looks for bulging there – but I love her and I love her wearing black and white.

  • Aidan B

I need those shoes, like, yesterday.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I need that bag, like, yesterday. Maybe we could do a two-person mugging and you can take the shoes while I nab the bag.

      • Aidan B

        • ThaliaMenninger

She’s little. We can take her. And the shoes and the clutch.

  • Tami from Seattle

As I scrolled down I prayed, “Please don’t let this be a jumpsuit.” She looks great!

  • Kbear

That is a NASTY fit on the bodice. Yikes!

  • CT14

Oh, but she wore that floral dress to the Oscars! She gets a pass forever for that(but she should also do that more).

    • conniemd

Or do you mean the Golden Globes? That floral Carolina Herrera dress was spectacular on her.

  • demidaemon

Enh. The white looks like the leftovers of a camisole. I don’t like it.

  • Monabel

Sorry, but this IS peccable. That armpit erection is not good.

  • Deborah Newell Tornello

*Sigh*. Lucy is, quite simply, a stunningly beautiful woman who can make just about anything look wonderful. I actually like this dress, though: it’s not my favorite of Lucy’s choices, but it’s very pretty.

  • MaggieMae

    I want cute freckles!

  • V No Privacy

This woman does not age. I want her skin care regimen, genes and/or the number of her dermatologist/nutritionist/magician. In lieu of those things, I will accept the shoes in a size 9.

  • Mona_Visa

There’s something off about the fit of this dress on her. However. She still looks amazing.

  • Dino Bonačić

    Eternal cutie-pie <3

  • holla

given the event and the story behind the film, which is her directorial debut, she is appropriately conservative and chic.

  • livesarah

Impeccable is the word. I don’t know if she might be on my Irrational Love list or if she really is perfect, because I almost never find a single thing to criticise about her outfits/hair/makeup. She should give lessons.

  • MandyM

I just love her. That is all.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

  • Amykl

I think Ann Taylor is going to copy that dress in about 5 minutes.

  • Yoshio

I adore her and her solid sense of style self – that said I have an negative reaction to pairing orange with black anytime outside of Halloween.

  • quiltrx

The white part is so bizarrely shaped..what IS that? There’s kind of a bellows look at the top of the black points–that’s just bizarre.
The shoes are great and the clutch is really fun. And she, as always, is gorgeous.

    • numenah

ITA. I thought I was imagining those bellows, but there they are on the model. Do not understand! Otherwise, she’s uncontrived and elegant, as per usual.

  • Vera

She has great style. I love that dress.

  • Moocows

Shes so beautiful and she doesnt age! I would wear most of her red carpet outfits, which i cant say for most of the looks out there.

  • Bert Keeter

Not digging those odd pi shaped”3D” bumps at the top of the bodice ….Like why?

  • ktr33

ANOTHER black dress with white satin around the neckline? schnooze! And even slightly cheesy. White satin really has no place in contemporary fashion. Ok for Downton girls’ wedding dresses only. Not chic, sorry, Uncles!

  • dschubba

I like the idea of this, but the fit in that bodice is so confusing. It reminds me of a PR unconventional materials challenge where the design is solid, but the textiles don’t quite work because the detailing is made from window sheers, but the rest of the dress is made from an old atom bomb casing or something.

  • colorjunky

  • E. D.

Wish it fit a little better along the top seams, but can’t complain.

  • kimmeister

Her cleavage looks fantastic. I wish her brows were filled in just a shade darker.

  • altermyego

Because she generally does black and white, then when she wears something like that blue floral Carolina Herrara, it’s POW! Right to the kisser. Love her.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

She peaked in that floral Caroline Herrera at the 2013 Globes. We’ll have to wait around for a few red carpet cycles ’til we get that goodness again.

  • NWBill

It’s LUCY LIU …. she could wear the latest garbage bag, with a matching dustbin for a hat, and STILL look like a kick-ass lovely woman! Remember: she’s the woman who makes SHERLOCK HOLMES look presentable in public!!!
