Laverne Cox in Hervé Léger at Logo TV’s “Trailblazers” Pride Event

Posted on June 24, 2014

This is a great little dress for her. When she first started making the red carpet rounds, we really hoped she’d reach this point; where big-name designers are offering her things to wear. It makes a difference in a rising star’s career, especially if she’s someone whose body is outside the size-2 petite norm that the entertainment industry imposes on women.

In other words, it’s important, in a very real-world way, that Laverne Cox is being embraced by the community of people who, for good or bad, have a massive influence on how beauty is defined by the culture. It’s as important as someone like Melissa McCarthy getting a custom red carpet look from Calvin Klein or Lupita Nyong’o getting the cover of Vogue.

Still have issues with her hair and makeup, but that’s a perfect little dress for her. We never think this about red carpet wear but we hope she got to keep it.

    • RussellH88

That’s a great little dress. Symbiote Spiderwoman Realness, right?

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

        Can’t be unseen.

    • Tarah

Her skin looks phenomenal, like she’s seriously radiant.

    • Glam Dixie

Her body looks great, makeup looks great, I just wish I liked this dress more. It’s not fitting right or something, looks like it’s a bit too snug.

      • Emily

I agree – it’s buckling in a weird way. I think this is a case of a great dress that is simply a size too small.

      • Gatto Nero

The fit seems a bit off, or the fabric a bit heavy. I think that with a little adjustment this would be spectacular.

    • RescueMe23

Though I completely appreciate the point you are making (especially since I’m nowhere near a size 2) my first thought was “not her again.”

    • kategs

I am glad she got the dress but I do not like the dress.

    • Spreecord

Look, Laverne. We don’t know each other and you definitely haven’t solicited my advice, but… it’s time for a new wig, honey. Netflix has got to be paying you enough for a new headsuit every year or two.

      • In_Stitches

If only they’d let her keep the long bob she rocks in Season 2.

        • NinjaCate

Shit, I wish I’d scrolled down before commenting. Just said the same thing.

      • Erica

Yeah, I pretty much love everything here but the hair.

    • Jennifer Bober

She looks amazing and I do hope she gets to keep the dress.

As I told Tom at the party, one of the reasons I LOVE reading you guys is that you don’t buy into the narrow standards that are so ingrained in the entertainment industry norm. You criticize clothes, not people. You may tell someone they made a bad decision in how they present their body, but you never criticize them for their body.

I totally agree that this is important and that Calvin Klein look on Melissa McCarthy showed the world that she could look chic and fabulous no matter her size. I can only applaud anyone who breaks through these barriers.

      • zuzu

Yes. And I will say this about Calvin Klein — they already make plus-sized clothing, but for some odd reason you don’t see it on plus-sized ladystars that often. They ought to fix that.

        • MilaXX

Agreed. I’ve even bought a few pieces off the rack.

      • Thomas

I want her to be on the cover of Vogue.

      • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

Yes — as someone who was totally ignorant of the fashion and celebrity world before finding the TLo blog and stepping outside their Mad Men tag, I’ve realized that I could never handle regular fashion commentary from one of the run-of-the-mill blogs or publications, one that doesn’t take this intelligent, critical attitude and isn’t so damn respectful toward women the way TLo are. Kudos, gentlemen.

        • smayper

My thoughts exactly! Got here from the Mad Men reviews, and have continued to learn, be amused, and challenged to question my assumptions.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I agree with everything you both have said about her look and all the unconventional beauties on the red carpet. But I can’t agree with you on the dress. It looks a bit ….tacky. But she’s gorgeous! She glows. Her skin is killer.

    • gayle

The dress is good, the face is good…the hair needs a new style.

      • Lily

Or at least some variety. She’s pigeon-holing herself into what most perceive to be drag glam. Pretty, but some variety would help.

    • LadyVimes

I really don’t like those types of bodices, so I’m biased, but I also think she could have gone up a size. The makeup I love though. Soft and dewy.

    • Sophie

Too tight! Love her expression in that last picture, it looks more relaxed than in the other ones.

    • SistaT

I gotta say: I’m kinda over the silhouette. I think everything we see from her is same-same. Bandage dresses. While this isn’t strictly a bandage dress, it’s the same shape and fit and it’s by the creator of bandage dresses. She’s so beautiful and so vibrant and I just wanna see something different. Also, do something else with the hair. It’s lovely but it’s been done by so many for so long.

    • leahpapa

I feel like I’m the BrItta Kitten (for all you COMMUNITY fans out there), but – the fact is that victims of anti-trans violence are disproportionately trans women of color, so I think it’s hard to overstate how important her inclusion in a cultural definition of “beautiful, valued, and legitimate” is.

    • Danielle

      Girl just GLOWS with perfection.

    • d4divine

Love the dress and the makeup…but that hair appears to be getting more highlights by the day. Dial it back cause you’re getting close to straw territory. Also high praise for red carpet posing.

      • kimmeister

And she’s doing her brows to match the straw color too. They need to be a few shades darker.

    • lunchcoma

I’m glad she’s getting sent Hervé Léger dresses, but I do not like the neckline on this particular dress. I’m having trouble imagining anyone who I would like it on.

      • kimmeister

Yeah, I do not like the metal bracket thing right in the cleavage. It made me stare at her cleavage and notice her scar for the first time.

    • boweryboy

She’s postitively beaming! Is this the first time she’s worn a high end designer? Her smile alone says she feels like a million bucks. I so want to have happy hour drinks with her.

      • marlie

She wore a (possible) Monique Lhuillier a few weeks back.

        • boweryboy

I’ll have to check that out.

      • MilaXX

She’s worn Moniquie Lhuiller and Alice+Olivia.

    • Kent Roby

Laverne, Sweetie: I keep telling you, “lacefront”; you are overdue for a trade up to better hair. Now, come sit by me and let’s dish on everyone else at this soiree while tossing back Cosmos.

    • Denise Rambo

She looks great but I don’t know if that was exactly the appropriate thing to wear to an event held in a church.

      • teensmom99

        LOL

      • marlie

I didn’t realize that this was at a CHURCH! Hm. Maybe a little too much cleavage then.

Reminds me of the girl who wore a dress that hit just below her butt cheeks to a wedding a few weeks ago. Not venue-appropriate. So short that even my bf thought that it was inappropriately short.

      • boweryboy

I would consider this inappropriate if she were attending an actual church service, but considering it’s a gay pride event it was probably one of the more tame outfits of the evening.

And maybe it’s my stuffy Pentecostal upbringing coming out but any kind of event held in a church outside of some form of church service seems oddly inappropriate and sorta disrespectful to me, and I’m not even religious.

        • marlie

Years back, I went to a concert at a Baptist church, and I got chewed out by my mother for wearing pants (the Baptist ladies do NOT wear pants even into church), even though it wasn’t an actual service or religious event.

        • http://oshma.net/wordpress MO

St. John the Divine hosts events that reach out to people who have been marginalized by organized religion, and that often takes the form of events that maybe haven’t been held in churches before.

      • Gatto Nero

Tho it wasn’t a church event, it was a LOGO TV pride event.

      • leahpapa

St John the Divine isn’t the kind of church where this would cause a scandal (wearing it to a Sunday morning service, maybe, but certainly not for a non-liturgical event). It’s a pretty relaxed, groovy, and progressive place. (There’s also a white peacock named Phil who stalks the grounds and can sometimes be seen strolling down Amsterdam Avenue.)

        • Denise Rambo

I have been to St. John the Divine and am familiar with their progressive/liberal programs but still … it’s a church and something a little less revealing would have been more appropriate.

          • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

It’s a Gay Pride event sponsored by the only gay cable network, with its own step-and-repeat. She’s fine.

          • Alloy Jane

Well then, it’s a good thing you don’t go to mass at my sister’s church, or you’d need a handler to carry your smelling salts and revive you lol! This “too-tight dress” look is par for the course, regardless of how many times the padre soliloquizes on the virtues of modesty.

        • Introspective

have episcopalian friends that work at st john the divine (including an out gay priest) and will second leahpapa’s point about the progressiveness of the place. really its no big to be dressed like this for a logo event to boot, and laverne looks pretty smashing so just sit back and enjoy…

          • leahpapa

So…what you’re saying is, you can get me good seats to the organ recitals and a photo op with the peacock? ;)

          • http://oshma.net/wordpress MO

I am Episcopalian, have taken part in leadership at St. John the Divine for some events, and I think the dress is lovely. I get angry when people wear T shirts with racist, sexist, or generally profane comments on them.

    • marlie

I like the dress, but I think she needs to go up a size. It would make the dress fit so much better around her waist and hips. And I seriously love that bracelet on her right wrist. Still not a fan of her wig, but her makeup is good.

    • kmk05

I love this. Sleek and sexy, although I wish she would style her hair differently.

    • Ray

She needs to start sporting a sassy short do.

    • teensmom99

I am all choked up to see her getting this kind of star treatment and thinking of what that must mean for every gender nonconforming kid who sees this.

    • TinyDynamo

That last shot is perfection – she looks so sweet and happy and gorgeous. GET IT, GIRL. So very happy to see her doing so well.

    • NMMagpie

She looks incredible. I am sure she will refine this in time but for now, DANG.

    • MissDelaware

I agree with the politics of this 100%, but I don’t love the dress, and I particularly don’t love it for an event at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. I mean, I know it’s always been a funky space, but still … maybe it’s the lapsed Catholic in me …

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

      HAIL MARY!

    • Cheryl

I wish the dress was just a little less tight. I mean it’s short, it’s low cut, there is no need for it to be that tight as well. I think another style of hair would be more interesting, but I think her face looks great.

    • rloliveira

I think the dress is too tight. An inch more in the circumference of the skirt would have made it work. It’s just as tight as the dress that Cameron Diaz wore the other day.

    • MilaXX

She looks great. I can’t wait for when she starts to switch it up with the hair and makeup.

    • FibonacciSequins

Wow! I like the dress a lot, although like everyone else I think it’s too tight. She looks fabulous. Time for some wig shopping!

    • KT

Astute point, TLo — couldn’t agree more.

The hair is looking slightly better than it has been recently, though I still think she needs a new ‘do. The makeup looks totally off for some reason. Agree that this is a sassy little number for her, though I think she should have gone up a size.

    • William High

It may be just me, but I always think she looks much better with darker hair, the blond washes her out IMO.

    • Thomas

I like it other than the shiny metal on the edges of the bust.

    • ashtangajunkie

I thought her hair looked great in the last part of OitNB this season – shorter and a bit darker. Hair aside, the lady looks all kinds of fantastic here.

    • decormaven

Trade the lighterweight bracelet for a stronger cuff and this would be WERQ-worthy. Love her happy, confident look.

    • Yoshio

This is an overall really great look for her. The length is just right – any shorter and it would have been too much skin a la Lea M. As it is, it’s just right.

    • largishbearishAtlish

oh please let there be a full length version of this some where complete with mermaid tail! (the ‘scale’ effect is kind of neat-o!)

    • AnaRoW

The dress is way too tight and the shoes look like they came from Payless. Love the makeup though.

    • kaybee

I agree, so glad she is getting bigger names for red carpets, but this dress is too small, and say if Britney Spears wore it, we would allll hate it. So good for her and I hope she gets more fabulous clothes but this is not that great.

    • Lilithcat

She needs to go up a size.

    • http://www.domesticdisturbia.com/ Christi Wampler

Anybody else think she just got new teeth?

    • Ann VerWiebe

      She looks so happy!

    • MightyMarshal

The face is looking a little bit Lil Kim and the wig is just BAD. That flat center part ombre does NO FAVORS.

    • Wink

The votes have been tallied. Time for new hair.

    • Tracy_Flick

I feel like the shoes are a wee bit “office,” and the fit in the midsection seems off. Otherwise, she looks lovely.

    • traceyishere

      Werq!

    • Sofia

i want to yank this dress up a few inches. somehow it doesn’t seem like it’s “on” her very well. the lack of support toward her armpits makes me nervous, as it would for any topless dress on a woman with boobs. this dress looks like it might fall down. and if halle berry’s pewter dress last week was too tight, then so is this one.

    • surfergirl70

I don’t like the neckline on her only because you can see the scars from her implants. It also seems to pull at the waist and hips. I love her, but I don’t think this is a great dress for her.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The style of the dress is great, it just looks a wee bit snug on Laverne, but like TLo, I am so happy that she is getting the attention and love from designers. Love her hair and makeup, too.

    • MissusBee

She looks really pretty, whereas I can imagine it being an of course on a lot of people. It’s that poise. She’s taken her Meet World Leaders game and poured it into some Herve Leger. Love.

    • dashwoodstole

Oh my God, the HAIR girl, the HAIR. Sort out your fucking hair. She’s so beautiful and her hair always looks like shit. The dress is lovely. I hope she starts looking a little more relaxed on the red carpet soon, she deserves to enjoy it.

    • suzq

I have to add my agreement with the commentary on the dress being too small. For what it is, it is very nicely designed, however. Her hair doesn’t seem to bother me as much as it does some of you.

    • colorjunky

Miss Thang needs a new wig, pronto!

    • Alloy Jane

Love the dress but it’s too tight. I get it though, how else would it stay up if it wasn’t squeezing the life outta her? Coulda done with a bit of letting out around the hips though. Dislike the hair. The makeup is disappointing and I don’t understand why she would want invisible eyebrows. Shoes are meh but I love the jewelry and I am not a jewelry fan.

    • greyhoundgirl

I can’t even express how much I love, respect and adore her.

    • Fannie Wolston

i love what those sheer fishnets are doing to her legs, what are they doing to her legs? fishnets that are there with out being there…cool

    • Kelly

I hear what you’re saying about the real-world importance, TLo — yes, indeed. But the dress itself is a disappointment to me — too tight, and the black designs look like a stylized bra and garter belt: too much of a stripper cliche.

    • NinjaCate

She looks absolutely smoking in that dress, and I love how visibly happy and excited she seems to be there. She obviously knows she looks great.
That said, Laverne honey, can we get rid of that hair? I was hoping that after Sophia debuted her new hair this season that Laverne would do the same, because I thought the long bob looked really cute on her. Either way, she should do SOMETHING new with it. She always wears it exactly the same way.

    • Ali2044

She looks incredible, but I would love her eyebrows to be darker and really frame that crazy bone structure she’s got going on.
