Keri Russell in Monique Lhuillier at the “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” Premiere

We’re not sure we’d love this as much on anyone else.

Maybe we’re reading too much into the pics and posing, but there’s a certain quiet poise and confidence to her that goes perfectly with this look, which is low key to the point of minimalist. The top is pretty much impossible to pull off, though. She’s doing her best with it, but it looks really bad from the side. We like the idea of a boxy top paired with that skirt, but we’re just not loving the proportions here. And we’re actively disliking the sleeves.

But hair, makeup, shoes and skirt are all on point and working for us. Despite the wonky top, she looks great, to our eyes. And this from two bitches who constantly complain about plain B&W looks and over-the-shoulder mermaid hair. The lady knows what works for her.

    Oh wow, she looks amazing.

She has a quiet confidence to her that really makes simple pieces work well on her. She holds herself really well so she can sell the hell out of something like this.

  • She is making it work, but a simple fitted white tshirt would make it work harder.

  • E.Nelson

She needs to be in a movie with one of Sevigny’s alters and LeeLee Sobieski as sisters

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I wonder what happened to Sevigny and her alters…we don’t see them much anymore.

      • Chloe is dressing fairly normal lately. The last few times we came across pictures, the outfits just weren’t colorful enough to build a character around.

        • hughman

          She’s got a lotta nerve.

  • hughman

What it really needs is a yellow pump.

    • portlandmermaid

Yes, hem it first to mid calf and then add yellow pumps. So we can see them better.

  • Qdahling

First thought when I saw this? She looks like someone put the clothes on their paper doll askew and now I can’t unsee it!

    • Gatto Nero

I got the paper doll vibe, too. But that’s partly why I like it! (Is that wrong?)

  • MilaXX

She’s making this work. I doubt I would like this on anyone else. I even like the hair and the top.

    • Kristin McNamara

I could see Kerry Washington doing this look quite well.

  • marlie

Keri’s makeup is really, really pretty. Her hair is a little flat, but it doesn’t bother me. I think the dress would be better suited for her if the skirt was hemmed to hit her at the same point that it hits the model (upper-mid calf), but it’s still an interesting look, and it suits her. The fabric seems a little heavy and wintery, though.

  • kimmeister

The faux short sleeves are awful! But her liquid liner looks fantastic.

  • conniemd

A Monique Lhuillier dress that isn’t wearable by most stars. Hard to believe. She does look good in this, but it’s generally a fail as a top.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I really like the fabric used for the skirt and agree that Russell’s makeup and hair are well done, but that boxy top with the itsy-bitsy cap sleeve just bugs.

  • She’s on my irrational love list, even after all the bads she did to Noel and Ben. 🙂

    • kimmeister

My BFF and I were always amused by Ben’s pronunciation of ‘anything’!

    • Introspective

oh NOEL. as in oh JAKE now on Thursday nights. as in yum.

and yes, Keri is forever my homegirl too. during my NYU days i was known to call myself the black Felicity (yes i know im corny and i cant help it)

she totally looks radiant here. even if the outfit isnt the greatest. and isnt that the point?

  • JasmineAM

I wonder what wig Elizabeth would pair with this…

  • Sarah

I am very excited to watch this movie. Probably nice for her to get a chance to look pretty, since I’m sure she’s quite dirty and harangued by angry chimps the whole movie.

    • mjude

oh miss sarah I am such an “ape” fan!

      • Sarah

I never watched the old ones until after the new ones came out, but I like alla that.

  • KinoEye

“A certain quiet poise and confidence.” Yep. I’d been trying to figure out how to phrase the impression I get whenever I see her, and that nails it. She has an innate classiness that automatically improves whatever she’s wearing. Pretty sure I’d hate this on 98% of other red carpet denizens.

    • lexilexi

Innate Classiness. An expression we don’t often use when describing the folks we see on the red carpet. Thanks KinoEye.

  • dustinrhodes

Her make up and hair person is *almost* Lupita level. (I know, blasphemous).

    • Fuchsiaforever

Hold it, you’re getting a bit carried away.

  • gayle

Face and hair look great. She is petite and I wonder if this is a bit overwhelming on her? It very much her kind of look though and it is working more than not.

  • Gatto Nero

The proportions are better on the model (shorter skirt/longer legs). Otherwise, this works surprisingly well.

  • Rhonda Shore

Would have been even better with skirt a few inches shorter. (See model.)

  • FancyPhilly

Not loving it on her to be honest. I don’t think of her as a possible member of the Audrey-bot army. This was a better idea on Rooney Mara circa 2011.

  • Shawn EH

    Love it on her!

  • KateShouldBeWorking

She looks like a line drawing of a classy French lady in the best possible way.

  • decormaven

Would have liked to see the skirt a bit shorter to better display the shoes, but overall, a good look for her.

  • demidaemon

Enh… I don’t love it. Hate the top, skirt is made out of too heavy fabric for the season.

  • smayper

Did anyone else get “amputated arm” from the first and second pictures of her? I honestly had to look, to reassure myself. But I love everything else about the outfit. I’m a pushover for quiet elegance.

  • Tami from Seattle

    Adorz. Beautiful eye make-up.

  • GeoDiva

How tall is Keri? This outfit seems like is for a taller gal. Otherwise, she has really stepped up her style game. Any intel on who her new stylist is?

  • Her “I’d like to look like a midget”..… Stylist “I have just the look for you”!

  • Mona_Visa

Very cool. You know that girl from your little home town who moved away, went to grad school, and got that job you dreamt of?

  • Sophie

She has such a striking face, probably part of the reason why she can pull off this stiff minimalism. I’d like to see the skirt a little shorter, though.

  • Glam Dixie

She looks like someone is going to pick her up by her head and gently swing her from side to side so we can all hear the lovely ding ding ding sound she makes. The proportions on the skirt are all wrong, it needs to be more like the length on the model.

  • boweryboy

I love everything about this. She looks great.

  • quiltrx

I really like the skirt, but there’s something about the top I don’t care for (can’t even say what).

  • Someone had to pull this off and I guess it had to be her. Cause she is. Big time. And I am not just saying that because she knows how to kill me 36 different ways. Oh wait…sorry…confusing real life and fiction again.

  • elemspbee

Lovely. Lucy Liu could work this!

  • Dagney

in general “trapeze” and fashion make strange bedfellows….but she is a tiny gal, so I suppose these sort of work. also, I love her in The Americans. and she comes across as a smart non-overly Hollywooded gal. so, IN.

  • In_Stitches

I flat out hate this. The proportions are wrong on her because she’s probably wearing the same garment as the model and the model has a solid 7″ on her. It only works on the model because she’s tall AND she’s photographed slightly from below, so you catch the waist from beneath the shirt hem that’s normally obscured from a straight on shot. Keri’s got a lot of innate chicness, but I don’t know if even Madames Tilda or Cate could pull this off.

  • livesarah

She’s beautiful, but that silhouette sucks and I really wish designers would stop using it.

    • Constant Reader

I’m not loving the full top over full skirt trend, either. It’s definitely a FMO look.

  • Raspberry2012

Oh, I don’t love this at all. Nope, not a bit.

  • holla

she is quite lovely, and does show a lot of confidence. Somehow, she’s on my irrational hate list.

  • evave2

I think the skirt is too long (was it made for a six foot model but not down-scaled to petite Keri?) but the model looks spectacular.

  • frannyprof

I feel like this is the kind of outfit that demands that the wearer be constantly posing in a certain way. Otherwise, it’ll look like a hot mess. I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m on board. I’m with those who think the skirt would look better a little shorter, but I love the top and the shoes on her. On her alone.

  • Fuchsiaforever

I wish the skirt was shorter. Funny, I had no quibbles at all with the top. Quite the opposite.
