Keri Russell in J. Mendel at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards

Posted on June 20, 2014

We’re loving the drama of this look. Miss Lady obviously decided to BRING IT. No half-assery on display here.

The fabric looks awfully heavy, though. The shape is perfect for her, but we wish it had a lighter, most summertime feel to it. This is a rare occasion where we get to tell a female star what we’re always telling the male ones: get your hand out of our pocket. We want to see that killer cuff you’ve got on.

She can handle that over-the-shoulder mermaid hair. We’re not inclined to love the style, but she’s got just the right face for it. Looks like we’ll be seeing her up her game from now until the Emmys. Looking forward to it. She clearly knows how to dress to get her picture taken.

I think the V is just a little too deep, but otherwise love this.

    • Raspberry2012

The V is a little too deep, and I wish the bodice were a bit more fitted on the sides. Between the looser fit and the super deep V, it creates the illusion that the bodice is too big for her. But from the waist down, she looks amazing.

  • Noah

Pretty sure this needed a statement necklace. Also weirded out that it even has pockets she can stick her hands into.

    Her head looks flawless, though.

  • MilaXX

Love the look, but agree the fabric looks heavy at the bottom. Would love to have that cuff.

  • Esther Sokolow

Who’s the woman in the white dress in the background of the photo? That dress is stunning.

    • MilaXX

      Bellamy Young from Scandal

      • RussellH88

        Crazy Mellie.

    • downest maven

I think that’s the actress who plays the president’s wife from Scandal. She won for best supporting…

  • Glam Dixie

A little too much sternum for me and is that dress giving her really wide hips or what? Am I the only one seeing that?

    • FibonacciSequins

I think the dress is a skosh large for her and also it’s her hands in the pockets.

  • RussellH88

I do not mean this to be mean or critical, but this is the kind of dress that can really only work on a lady who is less ample in the boobicle department which allows the neckline to be dramatic without turning into Titty Town.

    She looks really great here.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Your words to Kardashian ears, my friend.

    • Anna

Totally agree. I’m jealous of women who can pull that neckline off, I am not one of those women.

      • RussellH88

But on the other hand, I don’t know if she could pull off a curvy Va-Va-Voom type bombshell look, if that makes you feel better.

        • Anna

True. Grass is always greener, as they say…

    • MoHub

I’m just tired of seeing the undersides of boobs regardless of size. Top cleavage actually seems sexier to me for what you don’t see. I’ve even come to believe total toplessness would be less disconcerting.

      • RussellH88

I’m ok with it because the neckline is really the dramatic part of the dress. It serves an overall purpose to the impact. Now, if this were tittytastic and short with cut outs, then it would be overkill.

        • MoHub

It’s not bad in this case, but I’m just tired of the whole trend toward underboob and sideboob and just want to see an end to it whether it works on a particular body or not.

          • Grumpy Girl

Be careful if you say “see an end” because Lord only knows what they will show for that . . .

          • MoHub

Oh, my! And I try so hard to make the right word choices.

          • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

We’ve already seen quite a few ends, lol.

          • demidaemon

            Sad but true.

          • scoobynacks

            Paging Jaimie Alexander.

    • marlie

It’s not mean or critical. This is an example of the right dress on the right ladystar, because the dress works on the figure that she has.

    • That’s so funny, because I was going to write that I don’t think this is a great look for someone who is as unendowed as she is. It’s the same thing I said about Lupita N’s Oscar dress, which was, sternums are not necessarily that beautiful, and if I can count ribs in front, it’s too much chest and not enough curves. Be assured I do not advocate a look in which ample breasts are barely contained……far from it. I just think that if you’re going to wear a V neck that plunges to your navel, there should be at least the suggestion of a couple of curves to make the V neck sit properly.

That said, I love her hair & makeup, and I do like the fabric of the dress; wish it had been cut a little more severely at the hem. Somewhat too much material at the bottom, I think.

  • fursa_saida

I like this a lot. I particularly covet the jewelry (cuff, yes, but also the earrings), though I find myself wondering how you get that cuff on. It must have some sort of clasping mechanism going on, no?

    • Grumpy Girl

I’m not sure it goes all the way around her arm, so she could slide in from the side gap? Or she has really skinny hands.

      • fursa_saida

You’re probably right! Not sure why I didn’t think of that.

  • Sobaika

She is really bringing it, isn’t she? Love the cuff.

  • Kitten Mittons

    Stunning, really pretty.

  • FibonacciSequins

The fabric does seem oddly heavy/stiff. Because of that, I think it should have fitted more closely through the torso, the way it does on the model (love the jacket the model’s wearing). Quibble over. Keri’s at her best here. Maturity suits her.

    • Raspberry2012

You know, that’s a great point. If it had been a lighter fabric, the looser fit might have worked. But the heavier fabric deems a closer fit.

  • Mona_Visa

The dress looks a bit too large for her. Otherwise, she looks beautiful.

  • mjude

she looks good. I agree about the fabric looking heavy.

  • hughman

I can imagine sitting in that fabric and it leaving lizard skin imprints on my legs and everyone looking at me like I have some rare disease and the only reason I’m there is because of Make-A-Wish.

    But she looks pretty!

  • NMMagpie

Holy crap, she looks amazing. My kingdom for that cuff.

  • sienna elm

I’m pretending that her gorgeous cuff got caught on some fabric in her pocket and she has to wait until the photographers look away before she can fight to get her hand out.

  • dustinrhodes

This woman’s face is a work of art. Also, she’s someone who just gets more stunning with age.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Agreed! I think this is a personal best look overall and I think her face looks better – fantastic!! – with the bit of maturity showing.

  • LadyVimes

So few dresses have pockets that I’m inclined to give her a pass for posing with them. The whole thing is not a werq (the lip color bugs, the v is a bit much, and I can’t get behind the hair), but you werq those pockets, lady. Heaven knows we rarely get to.

  • marlie

This is really striking. It’s almost effortlessly chic. The V may be a skosh too deep, and maybe the fabric a little stiff, but that doesn’t bother me at all. She looks great.

  • @Biting Panda

If she’s ever seen Orphan Black, bless her heart for showing up, even though she knew she was likely to lose to the great Tatiana.

  • Richard Harper

It looks ‘boxy’ — like the waist is in the wrong place. Agreed about the fabric. The neck is cut too low, IMHO, and I wish they had powdered down her sheen; she looks sweaty here.

    • MilaXX

I think they were going for glowy here. The shine looks more like bronzer to me.

  • Stunning, chic, glamourus and sexy…How’d that happen in today’s Fashion World? Only critique is that the waist and upper body could fit a tad closer. I think fabric is a satin organga / gazar…love the print! OOPS…on closer inspection I see it is a brocade of some sort…still love it!

  • Vegas Girl

I love her on the Americans – she kicks ass! And yes, her hair does look great over the shoulder – but she even wears it like that on the show, and for the love of baby jesus, I want to see it styled differently just once. And she has beautiful hair – its NOT like that’s the only style option for her.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Her skin looks so shiny… make up fail?

  • KinoEye

She is just too pretty. She has the opposite effect on clothes that someone like Emma Roberts has — she has an innate ability to make most everything she wears look classier than it might be otherwise. I don’t like the heaviness of the fabric either, but it’s a stunning look.

  • I’m not a fan of those deep v necklines – even less so with the v back as well (if someone hugs you, where can they touch you without it becoming a gross invasion of privacy?) but she is wearing it very well.

    • kimmeister

Well, she’s slim enough so that anyone who hugs her will essentially end up hugging themselves since their arms will just loop right past her.

  • Hermione

I love the bracelet. Love her also. Re the mermaid hair: she always has it that way on The Americans, and her character Elizabeth always makes sure to arrange her hair that way (when she not in disguise and wearing one of the shows heinous wigs.)

  • crash1212

What a beautiful dress. She’s totally working it and is one of the few people who can wear a sternum dress without looking vulgar. (I just channeled Tim Gunn right there). Beautiful.

    • Shawn EH

Having a critically acclaimed show looks very good on her!

  • Yoshio

I’ll get kicked for this but what the hell, it’s Friday! She really needs to eat a sandwich…or something. I like her with just a few more pounds on her. It seems a trend for female actors to lose weight as they age and they can end up looking a tad skeletal. Nonetheless, she is beautiful and the dress is quite nice.

  • Gatto Nero

Great dress, if a little stiff. Love how it’s styled on the model, with the ’40s influenced jacket. Very glamorous.

  • DeniseSchipani

“Hi, I’m Keri, and this is my sternum. Feed me.” Actually, she’s not THAT scary skinny, but when a very thin person exposes that much sternum it really makes me want to whip up a lasanga for her.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think I would like this dress much more without the pockets. She is a stunning woman.

  • Shalhevet

I love dresses with pockets. I only own one cause they are pretty rare. I wonder if she chose the dress partly for pocketness, in which case I can’t blame her for showing it off.

That aside, I would like the dress more if it was any other color. It could have had much more impact in almost anything else.

    • ktr33

I have to really love a dress, or it has to be dirt-cheap, for me to buy one without pockets.

  • Tracy_Flick

I think if the fabric was lighter, the V wouldn’t seem so excessive. And maybe in inch or two off the hem? As is, it’s nice but sort of looks like its own weight is dragging it off her body.

  • ThaliaMenninger

No half-assery but a little too much bare chestery for me.

  • Lilithcat

The décolletage is too deep, and her hair is too messy.

However, the jacket the model is wearing is mine.

  • alyce1213

Love it — chic, easy, love the fabric and pattern. I’d wear it every day if I could. It’s a WERQ for me.

  • ktr33

Little Felicity is all grown up and pretty much werqing it.

  • KT

She looks gorgeous!! Love the whole look. How do I get skin like that?

  • boldprint

that lipstick looks like it was made for her. I agree that the fabric looks too heavy, but overall this is a fabulous look.

  • kimmeister

Her hands are in her pockets because she’s giving us free tickets to the gun show, at least in that first picture!

  • Her arms are out of control. She’s always been a beauty, and this look plays to her greatest strengths.

  • numenah

I don’t care for the dress for all the reasons everyone has stated, but I have to say, this woman takes excellent care of her straightened curls. Her face is exquisite.

  • Liza Ortiz

why aren’t you calling her out for being oily like you did JLO. I thought JLO looked fabulous if not a little moist from the Florida humidity

  • Fuchsiaforever

I love this entire look!!! Brava!!!

  • mjmiller77

in the first picture, I thought she was pregnant. Obviously, an undesirable optical illusion. From other angles, nice dress, except the V is too deep.

  • quiltrx

That V is so deep, it looks like one would have difficulty keeping the straps on her shoulders!
And “lurex jacquard” just sounds like “my thighs are drenched in sweat” to me. But she looks great, so suffering for beauty it is!

  • yethica

It’s that Mickey Mouse Club training…. which seems to have bypassed Aguilera and Spears.

  • Pretty f-ing spectacular.

  • JynxTheCat

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it with the jacket in the model pic.
