IN or OUT: Robin Wright at “Women Ruling TV” Panel

Posted on June 06, 2014

Oh God, you guys. We SO do not know what to make of this.

On the one hand, we’re all for pushing against the restrictions of the red carpet; especially the ones imposed on ladystars. On the other hand, this looks WAAAAAY too “Thank you for donating to the PBS pledge drive.”

It’s not not cute, exactly, they said, damning it with as faint a bit of praise as possible. We’re just not sure it works for posing for pictures. And we’re all for pairing cute lace-up oxfords with this dress, but those totally look like man shoes on her.

Are we bitches?

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Yes, you’re bitches.

OUT! Yes, you’re bitches. But you’re bitches who are RIGHT.

All y’all kinda hated Blake Lively’s baby poo-colored dress. Or maybe you hated it Blake Lively. Either way, y’all voted it OUT.

Love the look. Envious as hell of the sunglasses (just saw Eleanor Roosevelt’s in a Smithsonian pic and they looked a lot like that). Don’t love the shoes. You’re right.

  • @Biting Panda

In. Stop being such bitches. <3

  • crash1212

IN. Yes…oh, yes you are! *laugh* She looks way cute and I love that dress. The shoes could be questionable, but she’s a quirky gal and I think they work.

  • RussellH88

    It’s like Lady Pharrell.

  • AndieJay

In. But the shoes. There are a lot of oxfords that would have looked amazing. That pair does not.

  • hughman

I love. She’s an actress who wears costumes and this is a costume. It’s all “Days of Heaven”, Margaret Bourke-White, “Paper Moon” and gives her short bob some meaning.

    • j.w.

More like: she’s an actress that spends 6 months a year styled as Claire Underwood, so in real life she doesn’t give two shits about it. She just can afford to wear the heck what she wants to. Look at that body: most 20 something actresses can just dream to have that fit and toned body. Bitch has done her workout.

    • Beardslee

Yes, I got a real ’30s vibe from this.

    • Imasewsure

You are right… it’s so Paper Moon that she should have to cut a royalty check to Tatum!

  • Emily Dagger

Out. I love the dress, but she can have the hat OR the shoes, not both. Both is too “trying to be Annie Hall; missing by an unforgivably wide margin.”

Claire Underwood never would’ve made this mistake.

    • conniemd

I made the Annie Hall reference as well before I saw your post. A bad Annie Hall. I actually love the Annie Hall look. This is just too off the mark.

      • kbshee

        Ann Hall.

    • lulukittie

My first thought was, “Claire Underwood would never!”

    • Bill Craven

Exactly; butch sandals, sure, but not sockless Oxfords with a straw hat.

  • Cyprienne Zed

I love her, so to me, this reads as “I DO WHAT I WANT!”, even though it makes my feet sweat in empathy. IN for being Robin Wright.

  • Spicytomato1

“It’s not not cute.” Love that quote!

I don’t know, I’m torn, too. I love the dress and I want to like the shoes. I tried to wear my oxfords with no socks and slim cropped chinos the other day and my family refused to leave with me until I changed into ballet flats…so I guess I feel where she’s coming from. Maybe her family should have stopped her and reassessed her footwear, too?

    • teensmom99

Oxfords with chinos not this dress!

    • ktr33

Don’t listen to them! wear that! you’ll start a trend!

  • James

IN. I love it. Well everything but the shoes. I’d change those.

  • Hats are really having a moment, aren’t they?

    • VictoriaDiNardo

I hope so – I’m about to open a hat shop!

      • kimmeister

May your hat shop do well!

        • VictoriaDiNardo

Thank you! I had a shop in NYC back in the 80’s and 90’s and kind of stepped back from it for a while, but lately I’m feeling like it’s timely again. We’ll see. I’m i a small town in upstate New York now, but not far from Hudson, and there’s a bit of my old clientele rolling around up here. It’s nice to be a storefront again – it’s not the same experience working alone in my studio. I’m excited!

          • AnneElliot

I googled your name and your FB page came up — your hats are AMAZING!!! Wish I could come to upstate NY to visit! Will you be selling online?

          • VictoriaDiNardo

Hi – I’m so sorry I missed this over the weekend, I hope you get the reply.

Thank you so much! I am trying to figure out how to sell on line, but I’m alway happy to work with an individual on a design. Keep in touch!

      • Grumpy Girl

Good luck with the shop! I would so love to shop there, as a hat girl myself.

        • VictoriaDiNardo

Thank you! I LIVE for the hat girls! And lately it’s a lot of hat boys too. I have to brush up on my fedora skills – they CAN look good if they are done right – and so many men want hats these days. But I prefer to make women’s hats – much more fun! Come visit!

      • Alloy Jane

THAT is what this looks like. This is so Hollywood Farmer’s Market meets Pinocchio’s footwear. I love her but Out.

      • demidaemon

        Like minds.

  • “those totally look like man shoes on her.”

That’s ain’t the only manly thing about this look (and I love masculine looking woman), but this is an out. Put this back in the Amy Grant music video from 1992 where it belongs.

    • Yeah…those sleeves are an odd choice for her shoulders. And the print is making my eyes cross, which makes it hard to see whether she has any bust at all or how the dress is treating it.

    • The whole ensemble makes me want her to make out with Evan Rachel Wood.

      • formerlyAnon

I would call that a plus?

ETA: Yes, I intend that annoying ending a statement with a questioning up swoop with the voice. Because that’s how I feel about your statement. 😉

        • demidaemon

It is kind of a plus. For Robin, in general. Just not the outfit.

      • Leah Elzinga

I’d buy tickets to that show.

    • FrigidDiva

This looks like what the female Johnny Depp would wear, and that’s not a compliment.

  • luludexter

In – but qualified because the shoes are wrong – how awesome would spectator oxfords have looked with this? Or some other color besides that man-brown? I guess she did that to coordinate with the hat and glasses. But I’m digging the Depression-era retro vibe…

    • FibonacciSequins

I like the shoes but you’re right, spectator oxfords would have looked great.

  • sienna elm

I want to like it – but OUT.

  • FibonacciSequins

I like the dress a lot, and I like the shoes with it. Why shouldn’t women wear comfortable shoes on the red carpet if they like?

The hat isn’t really working for her.

    • Carleenml

I love the idea of comfortable shoes. I don’t know if I love these particular comfortable shoes.

  • kirkyo

I wish we could get Chloe Sevigny is this and have a Who Wore It Better post.

    • kimmeister

I totally thought this was a Chloe Sevigny look. Which rules it an OUT. I think it’s terrible. I must have the exact opposite taste in women’s hats as the uncles, because all the ones they hate, I love, meanwhile they gave this one a pass, and I think it’s terrible.

    • AnneElliot

I long for a Chloe Sevigny post!! I miss her alters and the hilarious back stories.

  • DuBey2

  • random_poster

Out. I don’t like the dress. Keep the hat, shoes and glasses.

  • StarburstLady

I have several aunts who dress exactly like this. They’re lovely people. They are not exactly fashion icons. OUT.

    • FuhUgh

I want to meet your aunts.

  • Amel

I feel like slightly altered tailoring on the dress could really improve this — she has kind of a narrow waist/”boyish” figure, so bringing the waist up higher would probably help balance out the look. Also getting rid of that hat. THAT HAT. But overall I just want to encourage flats to be OK on the RC, so … IN

  • shirab

Mary Stuart Masterson circa Some Kind of Wonderful.

    • FuhUgh

      Yes, that’s IT exactly.

    • ktr33

      YES! thank you.

  • Samantha Klein

IN. She looks great, and I love her for not playing the game.

    • j.w.

well that’s a Robin wright’s signature: never played the hollywood game. Remember when she turned down cover of Vanity Fair and Vogue after the forrest Gump success? She turned down tons of mainstream movies and refused to became the new american sweetheart that the industry had decided for her to became.

      • Denise Alden

You’ve just elucidated why I can’t be objective when I look at her! She’s even more beautiful with her ‘take no prisoners’ stance, isn’t she? Off topic, but I loved her and Naomi Watts in “Adore.”

  • conniemd

Out. She looks like Annie Hall’s poor cousin.

  • fursa_saida

I can’t stop thinking about Lainey’s latest blind item while looking at her. It’s interfering with my ability to evaluate her clothes. Ummmm I think it’s a totally fine outfit, but that dress wants someone who’s a little curvier. It’s just sort of hanging on her. But I can’t call it OUT, so IN it goes. *returns to speculating about Robin Wright and cocaine*

    • FibonacciSequins

A lot of people guessed Charlize Theron for that.

      • Lori

That’s my assumption. Robin having someone else to look after is not exactly recent. Her kids are adults.

        • fursa_saida

I 100% forgot about the kids.

          • Lori

I only remember how old they are because they were with her at one of the award shows. They both look a lot like her, especially her daughter.

    • j.w.

I thought that BI was about Charlize. I bet Robin did it in the past, when she was with Theron’s new boyfriend and many times she looked scary skinny, he’s a well know costumer. But now she is with that hottie Ben Foster, all loved up and looking healthy.

  • BobStPaul

I should hate this – and I really don’t care for the shoes – but somehow she looks quite endearing so I’ll give her an “in” on that score alone.

  • Anni

In. Love it. And I want those shoes.

  • Sabin

It looks like a whole man outfit, which is quite an accomplishment for a fairly feminine-looking dress.

  • Kayceed

    Depression chic? Eh.

    • Sofia

yes, i get “Ma Joad” from this.

    • dalgirl

      Dust Bowl depression era…

  • Rhonda Shore

IN, it’s breezy and chic. Not sure it’s venue appropriate but still vote it in. (And i dig the man shoes!)

  • MoHub

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was Jamie Lee Curtis. Time for new contacts?

    • schadenfreudelicious

i’ll join you then cause i thought the same thing…

      • MoHub

Thanks! I’m relieved, because I won’t be seeing my ophthalmologist until November.

  • mjude

IN, wishing the shoes were a different color. also don’t care for the hat

  • Griffinqueen

I think the quirkiness of this work would be better with someone who didn’t look so unhappy. She’s really beautiful but always looks so sad. Put this outfit on someone like Zooey Deschanel? Super cute.

  • MzzPants

If it’s a panel akin to Comic Con, then IN. Doesn’t seem to be a full-blown red carpet. If it was shopping in Paris, double in.

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

OUT. Love her in Forrest Gump and House of Cards, but this reads more as “spinster farmer’s daughter” than Claire Underwood.

  • formerlyAnon

IN! Not impeccable, but a Very Strong IN. It’d be *perfect* if she wore the same style shoes but they were similar to the Doc Marten stilettos someone referred to earlier (another post). That would have pushed the proportions of that length skirt to something we’re used to seeing.

  • CNM

  • therealkuri

I’d just like this so much more if there was a belt on that dress.

  • Capt. Renault

IN. It’s thought-out and clean and a good look for her. That that look dates from the early 90s doesn’t matter — this is her thing, and she’s doing it well.

  • Imma Mäder

A tentative in. I like the look and its breezy feeling, but these shoes are cut like men’s shoes, that’s why they look like men´s shoes – they should show more ‘foot cleavage’ to be more feminine, and then they’d be perfect!

  • JauntyJohn

She’s pulling it off — especially in that close up.

  • OUT. She looks like she borrowed those shoes from her fiance. Also, I feel like the look is a little young and twee for her.

  • Lily

I’m not sure this could be any more out for me. Sorry, the whole ensemble is “Look how hard I’m trying to be disaffected,” but really it’s an annoying mishmash of random clothes. Meh.

  • jspark

  • Machelle Allman

In! Of course they look like man shoes-that’s the point. The hat and shoes cut the twee of the dress. Brilliant.

  • artgirl9

The shoes make the look a little Dust Bowl Chic to me.

  • teensmom99

OUT. While I like the shoes, I don’t like them with the dress. And I see what she was going for with the dress but it kind of make me think of Bridget Fonda in Singles (I loved BF in Singles but that was a long time ago and we were all much younger then) and the hat’s a no and I’m a hat person.

  • Synnae

OUT. the look as a whole is too young for her, she should return it to Taylor Swift’s closet. She can keep the sunnies though.

  • Kerry McCombs

In. I love everything about it.

  • Mothra

The shoes make it an OUT for me.

Also the untied tie is sloppy. too sloppy.

  • FuhUgh

She looks like she’s headed to the Indigo Girls concert in Iowa City tonight. This would be fab, if that were the case. Since she’s on the red carpet, I’m going with out.

  • Monabel

She has every right to walk down the street like this. I don’t have to like it on the red carpet. The bitches are, again, right.

  • greymain

    in…quirky works on quirky.

  • Danielle

I really like how androgynous her head looks.

  • AlisonS

If you’re going to be a bitch you BEST be right! Man feet, saggy no boobs, she looks like a girl who played in her mommy AND daddy’s closet! OUT

  • Twigg

She is gonna have some stank feet at the end of the day,

    • alyce1213

I’m pretty sure she has the common sense to wear little cotton socklets.

  • Myra Amler

    Those shoes….

  • alliekat9090

IN. Love it. I have always adored the Annie Hall thing- if you can pull it off- and she can.

  • TwiddlyStun

My objection to the shoes is that they are implying that if you don’t want to wear uncomfortable stilettos your option is to wear man shoes that can only be termed “clodhoppers.”

  • ktr33

Is there an option of: OUT for the Red Carpet; IN for running errands in Brooklyn?
She could’ve at least worn some high-heeled lace-up oxfords, for a little 40s vibe, and some matte red lipstick.
Meanwhile, *I* would wear this dress to work with girlier shoes which means NO ONE should wear it on the red carpet.

  • deelup

  • decormaven

Dress is in, shoes are out, for me.

  • colleenjanel

Out. Too Idgie Threadgoode for my tastes.

    • Lori

      Full marks for the reference

  • lalahartma

    In! I love it!

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Those shoes are crazy wrong with an otherwise (too) casual outfit.

  • Tlazolteotl

Well, I’d totally wear this outfit in a heartbeat, so my heart says in. But then I consider that I am far from a fashion plate, so my head says out.

  • PinkyK

It’s a cute running errands outfit but on the red carpet? Um No!

  • deech_sea

Princess Buttercup is gone and has been reincarnated as Annie Hall–whom I love but not for the red carpet. Also, is it me, or does she look like Jamie Lee Curtis at first glance?

    • Miss wks

      yep. my first thought.

  • marlie

OUT. It’s a little TOO wannabe-hispter try-hard. Maybe keep the dress and hat (I know, I know), and switch out the shoes.

  • B_C_J

    She is her own woman.

  • nannypoo

My grandmother had this exact dress, but she always wore an apron over it, and these exact shoes, but in black. She was also 80 years old and had boobs down to her waist. And her hat had a clump of wooden cherries pinned to the hatband.

    • MilaXX

      Was your granny Minnie Pearl?

      • formerlyAnon

Only if the hat still had a price tag hanging off of it.

  • Well, this difficult decision took me all of……0.34 seconds. OUT.

  • Boobs Radley

She looks kinda butch, which seems weird to say about a woman in a dress. Maybe that’s what she’s going for. The cut of this dress emphasizes her broad shoulders, which I think adds to the impression. And those shoes are Florsheim’s top model from 1958.

    So I’m saying OUT.

  • Noah

“Twee” and “Robin Wright” do not coexist.

  • mmebam

Out. I CANNOT with those SHOES. It’s very garden clogs to Sunday 2 o’clock dinner…

  • Missy

IN. You’re kind of bitches. 😉

I think it looks really cute. I don’t even mind about the clunky shoes.

  • Imasewsure

    Two words… Marin County
Another couple of words…. not working together although I love that she dresses in her regular clothes, in her regular way
    Still OUT though Dear….

    • j.w.

She lived in Marin county for 15 years, right? that might explain it.

  • Kerri

Does anyone know who the designer of the dress is? I love it so and would like to know if I can in any conceivable way afford it. 🙂

  • Miss wks

I LOVE the way she looks. I want her whole outfit. She’s awesome.

  • Jangle57

If I just look above the knees, it’s an IN,when I scroll down to the shoes, it’s a bit of a jarring disconnect – but I don’t think it’s egregious enough to vote it out so a tepid IN

  • phylora

    IN. Love.

  • TheLaurenJean

  • boweryboy

I’m giving it a Natalie Merchant-lite IN. It’s cute and seasonably appropriate.

  • MarissaLG

Very cute for Brooklyn Brunch. Not appropriate for a panel of professional women. Sorry, OUT.

  • KT

This is actually a totally cute look, but it doesn’t suit her in any way whatsoever. Give this woman a pencil skirt and some bold graphic patterns, and we’ll be in business.

  • jtabz

    I kinda love it. In.

  • MilaXX

Cute look, wrong venue. If this was the horse race from last week, this would get an IN. It’s not so, OUT!

  • cat772

She totally looks like Mary Stuart Masterson circa “Some Kind of Wonderful.” That said, I think she looks good (and I wear actual man shoes that look like, well, man shoes, but they’re cute), but maybe not for photo ops.

    • cat772

Also, if I were her I would want to wear anything that wasn’t Claire’s skin-tight, rigid clothes!

    • Hysterectomypants

Ha, I was thinking a MSM movie too, but Benny and Joon. I think this more in theory than in practice–the bodice looks sort of floppy and saggy and I feel like you can see her trying hard in a way that you shouldn’t, somehow. Out for me.

  • barbarienne

I thought, “Is she going to a PTA meeting?”

I’m unimpressed, but not enough to rule her out. There’s a cuteness here. Lukewarm IN.

  • Tricia Rose

I like how she is separating herself from the HOC style and I find it very endearing and fun IN!

    • j.w.

This! The stylist from the photo shoot Robin did for a DC magazine said that she exclusively asked for a style totally different from Claire Underwood’s. She’s trying to separate from Claire’s style to avoid the type cast.

  • Miss Ruth

Scrolldown fug, to quote Heather and Jessica. Dress/hat/glasses cute as heck, then enormous man shoes.

  • Judy_S

Out. On the red carpet you wear Sunday best. This is a school dress.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love the shoes, but they were the wrong choice here. Out.

  • JenniferA

Out, because “OUT! Yes, you’re bitches. But you’re bitches who are RIGHT” pretty much says it all.

  • Kimberlini

Not a cute look but the TV Academy panel discussion events are not really red carpet; at most, they are red bath rug.

  • gitchygitchymama

It’s like she raided Portia and Ellen’s walk-ins.

  • Heather

OUT because so NOT for this event, those shoes are butt-ug, and a straw hat from Target should only be worn poolside or to pick up some salad greens at the farmer’s market. All said, that’s a cute little dress that I can see myself wearing to work in the summer. Just not on a red carpet.

  • Laura Livingston

Out. Little Butch on the Prairie.

  • judybrowni

She had me before she put on my grandpa’s shoes.

  • alyce1213

In. A lot of complaints here about venue-appropriateness — but really, it’s a panel discussion, not a movie premiere or even a photo call for a film.
I love the dress, the shoes I also love. I don’t know if I’d have chosen them with the dress, but it’s a look.

  • malarson2

    In! Love it.

  • OhSheila

Princess Buttercup is looking like a very handsome man. The shoulders of that dress are super broadening

  • Mr. J.

Love it. And of COURSE the shoes are men’s–from Goodwill–I have ones just like ’em….Go Granny, GO!!!!!!

  • j.w.

Just look at the other red carpets she did yesterday and the day before: one Claire underwood-esque white shift dress, and a black one very feminine and classy. This was a very informal event.

  • Lucas

I love it. Absolutely love it.

  • Meg

Out. It sounds so cute on paper, but something just isn’t working. The fit on the dress isn’t good & it’s much too long.

  • Gatto Nero

Out, kinda. A pair of oxfords would work with this dress and venue — just not these oxfords.
Still, I give her props for deviating from the expected.

  • dalgirl

She needs a corn cob pipe or perhaps a long blade of grass between her teeth.

    • Mr. J.

      • dalgirl

        Darn tootin’!

  • Rebekah B

    OUT. Man shoes.

  • Hermione

In. Love it, love it, love it all. I want to wear it all. Except that I couldn’t make the hat work. But I’d still wear it.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. She looks like one of Chloe’s alters.

  • majorbedhead

This looks like something my sister would put together to wear to a wedding. And my mother would be hissing at her the entire time: “I CANNOT believe you’re wearing THOSE shoes with THAT dress, Susan. Just because you ARE a lesbian, do you have to dress like one all the time? And take your hat off when we’re inside, for heaven’s sake. You weren’t raised in a barn, young lady.” And my sister would be rolling her eyes and trying to put me in the middle. I’d be over in the corner, drinking.

    • formerlyAnon

You gave me SUCH a laugh with this one. I recognize these people.

  • FancyPhilly

In. Love it, Reminds me of 1997 somehow… just got to dig out my Pulp album and rock it out.

  • sunflower

OUT. That dress is cute, and could have worked, but not with this styling

  • ovarB

  • Trickytrisha

Gym teacher attending a school dinner in 1939.

    Edit: Out.

  • Grumpy Girl

Out for an event called Women Ruling TV. In for everyday life.

  • kerryev

Out. Somehow the man shoes push it even closer to cutesy, and cutesy is not a word I care to associate with Robin Wright.

  • MaggieMae

OUT. I can’t sign on to the shoes with that dress. Admittedly, it’s difficult to see her not dressing in character (HoC). But, still, OUT.

  • Shawn EH

I know she’s a farm girl at heart, but this is too literal and unflattering when we all know she can turn on Sharon Stone if she wanted to. OUT!

    • j.w.

probably turning into Sharon Stoned is in fact what she’s avoiding.

  • enid soto

OUT. It’s like she stole this entire outfit from Taylor Swift’s closet.

  • stonecoldcuddlewhore

In. She looks like a real person, albeit an exceptionally gorgeous real person.

  • J.W.

No. At first I thought it was a young male and expected to see some sort of skinny trousers when I scrolled down. IMO – If she’s going to wear all of this together then she should do something to add a feminine touch like a different hairstyle or something.

  • KCF

In. I think she’s wearing it with down-to-earth flair.

  • MartyBellerMask

  • Filmjen

In. Bitch totally raided my closet though

  • KendraMR

OUT. Cute dress, but I can’t with the shoes.

  • Trishington

If being bitches means telling the truth, then you is bitches. Would it kill these people to choose clothes that fit? Also, I hoped she asked nicely before borrowing one of Reese Witherspoons sad-sack hats.

    • j.w.

Claire fucking Underwood would’t ask nicely for one of Laura Poon sad-sack hats. Bitch would just take it from Poon’s walk-in closet and if the pointy chin hoe would even try to throw the “you don’t know who am I” line she would just turn back and give her a glare from hell that Laura will call the Atlanta cops begging them to take her back to the cell.

  • This like a cross between Annie Hall and Boy George. Weird.

  • amanda siegelson

i’m voting IN for this – i really like it (shoes and all) and only wish she’d put on a belt to make the dress look a little less shapeless. but she looks comfortable and chic. good on ya, girlie.

  • No. Those do look like man shoes. I know it’s matchy, but a cute pair of white/navy spectator oxfords, and this is adorable.

  • &theJets

    Cute! IN

  • Tigerfly

My first thought is that she looks like one of Chloe Sevigny’s alters… Out.

  • snarkykitten

IN, Women ruling tv means women can where whatever the fuck they want.

  • Qitkat

In, but then I have a love for polka dotted dresses. The shoes made me laugh, but I suspect she wanted to be comfy, but there are better choices if that’s the case.

  • frannyprof

  • I’m conflicted. The dress is cute. I like the hat, but the shoes she’s wearing are so wrong that it takes this look to an OUT. A cute pair of blue and white oxfords would have been just the doctor ordered.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

This is what happens when you ask Johnny Depp what to wear on the RC. Oh, honey, NO.

  • somebody blonde

OUT. Those shoes are horrible, and she looks like she’s supposed to be rowing a boat somewhere.

  • msdamselfly

IN Like it in a casual way

  • SophieCollier

OUT. In spite of this being a dress, she looks extremely manly.

  • Heather

I’m going with OUT. I strongly dislike those shoes on her.

  • BLauD

In. I find it really charming, actually. I’d like it better if she were walking through the Hamptons and not a red carpet, but still…

  • berkeleygirl

Yes, you’re bitches. Sure, it’s casual, but when you look like that, it’s fine. Assuming she wanted to wear flats, her brogues look far wittier – and more comfy – than a lot of flats out there. They perfectly complement her killer shades. Most of all, she’s a drop-dead gorgeous woman who likes to keep it simple. How many women Wright’s age – 48 – can get away with a simple short cut and no makeup, let alone those who smoked most of their life and have and no work? (Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think she’s had any…)

  • Man Dala

OUT. This is garden-casual, not red carpet. “Garden” as in “horticulture”.

  • macwell

It’s more of an ‘on the street’ look than a red carpet look. Would kill on the streets of LA or NY.

  • VioletFem

OUT! Yes, you’re bitches. But you’re bitches who are RIGHT.

  • Joyce VG

IN! The Princess Bride is always In.

  • demidaemon

This doesn’t look like a look for Women Ruling Television. It looks like a look for Women Ruling the Farm. Or Dorothy from Kansas. All she’s missing is Toto. In other words, OUT.

  • Irene Palma

Oh, they’re remaking Fried Green Tomatoes?

  • aquamarine17

  • MissMariRose

Yes, you’re being bitches. She fabulous and I love how she’s serving up Elaine Benes realness here.

  • TigerLaverada

Well, it’s Robin Wright, who is always IN. But I never thought I’d see her as Ma Joad.

  • Dreamwr8tr

It feels like she decided to channel Shailene Woodley’s baby butch. Or very rebellious-90s- teen- girl who couldn’t find Keds/Doc Martins so she decided to bogart some thrifted men’s shoes and had to go to church with red eyes.

I like the shoe leather, but it just doesn’t go with the rest of her outfit.

It feels a little weird since she was 28 in 1994.

  • OUT. There are some women who can pull of man shoes. She is not one of them.

Although I say this gently with love. I’m a little scared of her.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

OUT. Ignoring the fact that the shoes are “man shoes”, the dress, while cute enough, isn’t really suited to her. Those sleeves make her look like a Line-backer, and the dropped waist is too low. Her head looks nice though, she can handle a hat.

  • Yoshio

  • Sunraya

Goodness, this is just silly. She is not a country farm girl. Stop the pretense.

  • LambeeBaby

Out. But you are still bitches (said with love and admiration). Her shoulders are too broad for this. It’s making her look like a linebacker.

  • bringbackbeatles

Out. Dress could be cute, but the rest needs work. Sunglasses are ok too.

  • sleepycat

IN IN IN IN IN, totally would dress like this in real life if I was a woman

  • roche

100% IN! I mean come on, how formal does her ensemble need to be? She standing in front of a Netflix backdrop? Is it a little young for her? Maybe. The sleeves are a little poofy and schoolgirlish. But I will defend to the death a woman’s right to wear comfortable — yet stylish — shoes that men wear every day! The idea that a woman can only be stylish in the pain machines that the fashion industry churns out for women to wear on their feet! Ok, enough with the rant. She looks cute. The hat and the shoes compliment each other, and the polka dots are summery. She looks relaxed and herself. ‘Nuf said.

  • Cameron Turner

    In! This is great!

  • Janet B

My mother had a very similar dress in the 70’s. A change of shoes and bit more color on her lips would make a huge difference. Thinking of Taylor Swift – probably not what she was going for….

  • Joy Yeager

Oh, you are so right, OUT

  • quiltrx

Sorry to say OUT. I like the *ideas* here, but it’s all just a bit too disheveled. She’s incredibly gorgeous, though.

  • icm

My Dad had a pair of shoes just like those.

  • kategs

Nay on the shoes. The rest? Yay!

  • poodle66

OUT!!! I’m with you guys on this! An awful look. The dress is cute but not with those hiddy shoes. She needs to play “I enjoy being a girl,” the Doris Day version. As an unapologetic girly girl, this looks reads too boyish.

  • Maya

  • Joey Melliza

not loving it – the shoes make her look like a man in a dress

  • bailey

    definite out. correct bitches

  • Brad Watson

Well, we can’t all be Solange.

  • feromoon

does anyone knwo where people from outside U.S.A. can watch this online?

  • livesarah

I don’t love the shoes, but everything about this shows a woman who is supremely confident in her natural good looks. So overall, in for the attitude she is projecting.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

OUT. But I’ll never call you bitches because I love you two with every fiber of my being.

  • DeTrop

Is the well that far from the house that she needs those shoes? Good grief!

  • Lilithcat

I liked it until I got to the shoes.

    But, over all, in.

  • Miranda Reseigh

Out. I like the components (except for that hat), but they don’t go together very well. It needs a lighter shoe definitely. Looking at those made my feet start to sweat. I love the sunglasses. I feel like the bodice on that dress is messing with her proportions, too.

  • This is pure Block Island after Labor Day to me. And I would love it there. But not for the red carpet.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN! Quirky shoes, but What the Heck do We (Bitter Kittens) Care! Extra “IN points” for the quirky shoes.

  • WittyCism

Isn’t this “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” non-fashion? Out.

  • Ray

It looks like boy in a dress. But if anyone can pull off boy in a dress it’s this lady.

  • dmkava

Her young kind-of-hipster bf is rubbing off on her, that’s my guess bc those kind of hats are all over now in BK.. Used to see him around the East Village a lot, looking very hipster-ish. IN because she’s trying new things

  • ankali

    OUT. Boring. Cute shoes, though.

  • Guest

yes, if she was in Portland, Oregon! she’s got the look on that one!

  • MannahattaMamma

a beautiful woman refusing to play the beauty game at least this time round. But it’s not the sullen Lena Dunham “I’m too cool for this” vibe; it’s more like “hey, here I am, and isn’t this kind of fun, and hey my feet hurt A LOT most of the time, so now let’s get on with things.”

  • Guest

In! Fun times. Even if they are dude-ish shoes (and why shouldn’t they be? they look comfy), the polka dots balance that out nicely.

  • saintebeuve

In! Fun times! I like the balance between the officey oxfords and the picnicky polka dots.

  • Pterodactyl111

OUT. You’re bitches with a point, and my point is that if she had picked different shoes — even a less heavy version of the same shoe — I would’ve given it an in.

  • MandyM

Would it have killed her to don some lipstick? Maybe chucks with that dress if she wanted some quirk? As is, those shoes and that blank face gives her an OUT from me.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Valdri8

Annie Haul your ass to a stylist

  • Tom Markiewicz

There is something off about it. I think the elements are okay, but the sum is underwhelming

  • Tom Markiewicz

    so OUT

  • Jennifer McGuire

  • Out. Hate the shoes. They ruin everything. And would it hurt her to put a little color on her lips. This is not good. Then again, I have an irrational hatred of this woman.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I’m the opposite with her. I have an irrational love based on how much I loved Santa Barbara (the NBC soap) back in the olden days. What she has done since, especially Message in a Bottle and hanging around with Sean Penn, are so not to my taste. But I still love her for Santa Barbara. And also probably The Princess Bride.

      • Hahahahaha. I remember her from Santa Barbara too! I actually did like her better in that. Of her film work, Princess Bride is the only thing I’ve liked her work in. It’s one of my favorite movies, so that probably helps.

        • j.w.

Can’t believe you guys doesn’t like her in House of Cards! She is one stylish bitch!

    • Guest

      I think she’s a good actress,but I hate her too.

  • Kaytee

Gotta say out. the shoes are hiddy (maybe with cute pants?) but they drag a drab look all the way DOWN to way OUT.

  • mila_8

Out. I have worn this outfit before, result of a closet crisis and I thought it would look cute. It did not look cute, it looked unprepared. Same case here.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Is this a case of “I am sick to death of people telling me how pretty I am, so damn it, I am going to dress like an Agatha Christie character who is taking a walking holiday in stout brogues and stumbles over a body”?

  • UsedtobeEP

I want to not like it, but…I kinda do. Oh well. Manshoes for me, I guess.

  • ellabob

Out – those shoes are unacceptable…

  • Beto

Did she hopped on a time machine, raided a closet of a random country woman in the 1920s and came back?

  • Michelle Lim

she looks cute as heck! Way to go!

  • JP

In. She’s quirky and adorable. It’s not like it’s a major awards show like the Emmys or something.

  • My son just said her outfit looks like it’s for a 60-year-old with arthritis. I’m trying to like it. But it’s not quite working.

  • Guest

She looks like hell. What’s up with hole in her neck?

  • mickiemonkey

I have those shoes. They are Frye’s. I wear ’em with jeans and a silk blouse and feel weirdly sexy as hell. But red carpet wear? That would be a no.

  • StrandedFashionista

It has enough of a 1930s vibe to it that I can give the shoes a pass. That being said, while everything from the ankles up is a very much ‘IN,’ the shoes are still questionable.

  • Jenn

    Like a lot lot lot.

  • melanie0866

    Out. What you said.

  • EEKstl

IN. I agree a slightly more feminine take on the oxford would have been better, but she’s making a quirky choice work.

  • Out. Costume. Dressed as her four year-old.

  • lilazander

OUT! You are not bitches, uncles, well, not in this case. She looks awkward, both the hat and the shoes are too heavy for this dress.

  • frosty dufour

Out. She’s always taken that anti-star thing too seriously

  • Mousentrude

    In. She looks fine.

  • LMGordon

    40 going on 15. OUT.
