Salma Hayek Style Double Shot: Cannes Edition

Posted on May 20, 2014

Miss Salma finds herself in a very pink mood at the moment. Let’s assess; shall we? Allons-y.

We didn’t much like this dress when Julia Louis-Dreyfus wore it, finding it a bit drab and shapeless. Not so with Salma. It helps that it’s hemmed just at the knee instead of the below-the-knee style JLD favors. This was clearly designed with her body type in mind and she’s making this frock sing. Unfortunately, it’s singing a duet with those shoes, which makes us weep. We canNOT with little pink bows on grown women’s shoes. Unless they plan on doing a tap number, in which case, we’re fully supportive.

Barbie appears. And y’know? We’re quite okay with it. We’d probably rag on Carrie Underwood if she wore something like this, but Miss Salma’s got the ability to take a relatively simple Barbie gown and make it a head-turner of a look. Not loving the hair, though. A loose up ‘do would’ve looked great here. And that clutch is all kinds of wrong, unfortunately.

I love both, but those shoes are of the devil.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Yes, but that snake bracelet in the second look is to die for.

      • holla

        yes love the snake bracelet!

  • Kathy_Marlow

That clutch is “jeans, white t-shirt, killer boots, leather jacket” not “Barbie goes to Cannes”

    • MilaXX

Exactly. I think that clutch would look killer with a moto jacket, but not with this dress.

    • Introspective

that clutch is a trapper keeper. maybe john bender in the breakfast club’s trapper keeper…

but i do love her barbie look in spite of all the reservations one should have about a barbie look.

    • Amel

Yeah I think she was trying to “edge up” the look … but it just didn’t go

  • Coleslaw McGraw

I like the shoes in the first look but the dress is something I might wear to work. The hot pink number in the second look is AWESOME. I don’t even care if she’s wearing crocs under that thing (as long as we can’t see them.) i think it looks great on her. Do agree that she could have done something with that hair.

    • How wonderful it would be if celebrities wore crocs under their ballgowns…

      • 3boysful

        And so practical.

    • ballerinawithagun

The first dress looks like my $12.99 bargains that I love for summer from T J Maxx!
She look fabulous in that gown! But I’ve always loved shocking pink!

      • Constant Reader

I love shocking pink, too! Glad I’m not the only one.

  • Glam Dixie

Those shoes and the awful giant black clutch were both total needle scratch moments but I really like both dresses on her. Second look definitely needs better hair.

  • Jennifer Bober

It’s amazing what a difference proper support and fitting do for a strapless gown! I would have loved a loose updo with that one as well to show off the shoulders. The clutch is WAY too big to go with that dress.

As for look one, I love the dress, but the matchy shoes were just WRONG.

  • Crystal

I’m just glad she’s not wearing those weird metallic body armor dresses she was strapping herself into before. Softness works with her curves, the robot-warrior-in-the-eighties routine didn’t look good on her.

  • hughman

That clutch and that dress? Jesus. If that snake bracelet were a torch, we could stand her in NY Harbor.

    • decormaven

“Give me your tired, your poor, your metal-studded masses yearning to break free…”

  • Salma Barbie is BEAUTIFUL! Really love both dresses on her.

  • Anna

Love the Saint Laurent gown, but get your assistant to hold the IPad case for you.

Shoes from the first look belong with Taylor Swift.

    • Even Taylor isn’t THAT twee. She prefers her Oxfords or subdued-colored flats. Not neon bows.

      • jtabz

        Even Taylor isn’t THAT twee.

True. These beyond Taylor-twee. They’re Zoe-twee. And Zoe-twee is not in Salma’s wheelhouse.

        • Anna

You’re right. I can see the black tights with them now.

          • jtabz

Oh, those tights. Perhaps she suffers from a variation of Tobias Funke’s never-nude condition.

          • Anna

Ha! “There are dozens of us! Dozens!”

          • jilly_d

  • Tricia Rose

I actually like the flowing hair. Very Aphrodite!

  • (Disqus was having trouble for a minute, and I was amused that the background for its error page uses all sorts of gifs from pop culture, including Sam Tarly’s disappointed look in Game of Thrones.)

Anyway! I normally cannot flee far enough away from hot pink, but that second one works SO WELL for her! Definitely a good comparison to Jessica Chastain’s limp look.

    • Kitten Mittons

      The gifs are amusing, indeed.

  • Danielle

I love the color on her, but that clutch Does Not Go.

  • Fuchsiaforever

That clutch looks like a bedazzled Trapper Keeper!

  • Too. Much. Hair.

And on their own, I like the shoes.

  • Rhonda Shore

She looks great but i find gowns the color of Pepto Bismol problematic somehow…

  • FibonacciSequins

    Think pink!

Agree on everything but her hair, I’m digging it loose and wavy.

  • Carol the long winded

One wonders about the structural underpinnings in the strapless number. Perhaps her bosoms are filled with helium?

  • Tanya Wade

As a busty girl, I love both those dresses, especially the Bottega. The shoes and the snake bracelet can disappear, though.

    • littlemac8

I love the style and fit of the first dress but hate the color and the shoes. I can’t stomach pink and black together. Although not normally a fan of hot pink that second dress fits her to perfection and I think she looks lovely (minus the trapper keeper).

  • MilaXX

I like the first look but hate the too matchy & seriously hiddy shoes. I’m not quite sold on the second look. I like it from the waist up, but the skirt reads a bit bridesmaid to me and the clutch is too casual for the dress.

  • breathlss79

Also, the snake bracelet has nothing to do with the clutch or the dress.

    • Hysterectomypants

And yet, the bracelet is what totally sells me on that look.

  • GillianHolroyd

The shape and fit of that first dress is lovely but the graphic is ugly.

Love the color of the second one but want to rip off the droopy bow.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Hate the first outfit. Wish I could love the second, but the Trapper Keeper clutch ruins the look.

  • Anne At Large

Does she have a new stylist? These are both so flattering to her shape – she is properly supported and her waist looks tiny! She is always lovely but not usually this flattered by her outfits.

  • ktr33

Blech – the top one looks like a waitress uniform at some theme diner where everything’s day-glo. I thought the 2nd look was quite a wow with her coloring and her hair. Only misstep — a big clunker — is that weird studded “clutch.”

  • Shawn EH

The first dress: I guess she Cannes-can if she wants to, it’s France!

The second: all I see is that snake.

  • LeelaST

    Living for that snake bracelet/cuff.

    • siriuslover

it’s cool, but I’m not digging it with this get up. I’m tired of seeing scorpions and snakes and other creepy crawlies accessorizing formal wear.

  • frannyprof

I dunno… the fact that she’s married to the guy who owns practically every major designer brand (a bit of an exaggeration, but not much) and therefore has access to amazing clothing/couture makes me inclined to always expect more from her, and I’m usually disappointed.

  • Hetha Innis

That first dress just looks like something by Victoria’s Secret to me. LOVE the second look though.

  • marlie

First look: I like hte dress, but the shoes are WAY too much. Second look: Everything is lovely except for the Trapper-Keeper.

  • MoHub

Pantone Color of the Year: Radiant Orchid.

    • kimmeister

Yes, but the color she’s sporting is not radiant orchid, which has much more purple in it.

      • demidaemon

This is more Neon Carnation, if you ask me. And I do not love the shade.

      • MoHub

Maybe it’s my monitor, but it’s definitely not reading Barbie Pink. I’ve got a definite purple blend in there.

  • ScarlettHarlot

How I wish she’d worn a big statement necklace with that pink gown.

  • Pterodactyl111

Is snake jewelry a thing now?? Because I am 1000% on board with that trend.

    • makeityourself

Yes, it’s back once again. Lots of rings and for those who are more adventurous, bracelets.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Liking the first dress, but J’adore the St.Laurent. Salma is strong enough to wear Barbie pink and make it her own.

  • livesarah

I never even noticed the clutch until you guys pointed it out. And I love the hair In the second look. But obviously I love Salma too much (and am a sucker for slightly juvenile shoes) so I gave her full marks for the first look as well.

  • unbornfawn

Love the dresses on her. Not crazy about that snake crawling up her arm.

  • Janet B

Those shoes call for something simpler, maybe a black pencil skirt.

  • Pepper Collins

Funny…they wrote “Allons-y” and I’m currently watching Doctor Who!
I never would have guessed to put Salma in pink, but it looks quite lovely on her!

  • BrooklynBomber

She’s stunning. Except those shoes. And normally I would hate that pink gown. But she’s looks amazing in it.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Yes, that pink dress is a tough color to wear, but she looks beautiful.

Also, I keep forgetting that her figure is just unstoppable. Good grief.

      • BrooklynBomber

“Unstoppable” is the perfect word for it.

  • Lower L

I don’t like the way the first dress fits at the bustline. She clearly had to add more black material to the edges of the neckline for coverage purposes, and that fabric doesn’t lay right. Love the snake bracelet in the second outfit.

  • Skippymom1

The diamond snake is gorgeous, but I don’t see it with this. I give you the shoes on the first look, but I still like the whole ensemble.
Let’s just not discuss the clutch and pretend it didn’t happen.

  • Boulderista

The first outfit reminds me of a bowling shirt AND shoes for some reason,

  • That clutch looks like a Trapper Keeper.

  • msdamselfly

    Love that pink!

  • lamh36

I like both looks, but is it me or does she look really tired in the first pic.

  • demidaemon

I don’t like either look. Both seem to be repressing her natural BAM! POW! diva power, especially the first look, which actually de-emphasizes everything awesome about her body.

  • deech_sea

Barbie with a snake on her arm–I think she looks beautiful in both looks. I wonder if the snake is supposed to be reminiscent of “From Dusk Til Dawn.” Wasn’t a remake or a TV series or the like recently made?

  • Judih1

Wish she wore some better jewelry than that bracelet for the second look. It doesn’t work with the Barbie and neither does the clutch. Agree that the first look
is great from the ankles up.

  • in a pickle

The first look is body flattering, but looks very 90s office manager to me…until I got to the shoes and then it went straight to Carol Burnett’s Mrs. Wiggins.

  • PastryGoddess

I thought she was afraid of snakes.

Go on use won’t be sad

  • Oh, that clutch. Is she live tweeting the event and decided to dress up her iPad? That first dress is so perfect on her, it’s giving me the will to go to the gym this morning.

  • MartyBellerMask

She hasn’t looked this good in a LOOOONG time.
I actually think that first dress is ugly and cheap-looking, but it looks great on her.

  • butterflysunita

I think she looks stunning in the second look. I’m no fan of hot pink but she really wears that color well.

  • NBG

Ban Trapper Keeper clutches once and for all. It’s not like these ladystars have to carry their english lit notes with them at all times. WTH?

    • Imasewsure

You never know when there is going to be a pop quiz!! And yes those Peechee clutches are soooooo stupid!!

  • KT

She looks pretty good in both of these, but decidedly less fabulous than usual. She looks like she needs a nap or something, which, I completely empathize with. The shoes in the first look are KILLING ME in a bad way by being both too twee and too on-the-nose matchy. But the dress is great.

I don’t love the second look, but it’s fine I guess. The styling is all wrong though — hair, makeup, clutch, asp are all off. And I disapprove of that shitty little hip napkin. Harrumph.

  • FancyPhilly

Omg, I hate that first dress with the fire of a thousands suns. I can feel the tencel fabric between my fingers. It looks like something from Wal-Mart or Dress Barn. Cheap, cheap, cheap.

  • E. D.

Hate the shoes on the first one. I don’t mind the hair on the first one. Hair up would have made the bag look even more out of place.

  • DagnyReardon

I have heard so many tales of her less than kind behavior that I can’t get past it. I’m gleeful that she looks so silly in those match-y match-y shoes.

  • LambeeBaby

Her face looks drained. Shoes are a Hideous misstep but the first dress is very flatter. I would have preferred that the gown was cut to a knee length dress.

  • Siege

I think she looks lovely in both, and they fit extremely well, which is not always the case for her. (Also: one of my friends met her at Cannes and said Salma couldn’t have been any nicer, and her daughter is both adorable and well-behaved.)

  • formerlyAnon

I should hate that sescond dress on several counts, but she looks FANTASTIC in it.
