Mindy Kaling in Finders Keepers at Hulu’s Upfront Presentation

Posted on May 01, 2014

Mindy, please know it’s not you; it’s us. Or rather, it’s that skirt. We just can’t live in a world with tulip skirts. They have to go. They look good on precisely no one.

Cute top, though. Awful shoes.

Are we wrong to think a cigarette pant and some patent slingbacks was all the girl needed to go with that top? Or are the proportions wrong? The bottom of it hits at a tricky spot, so we can understand the impulse to match pieces instead of creating a line that cuts her in half. Still, we’d have handed her a high-waisted pair of pants and asked her to try them on, at least.

    • TrixieConQueso

An outfit for Non-Human Barbie-Dolls only.

      • MilaXX

I think that skirt looks awful on the model as well. I would only accept that skirt on the boardwalk as a bathing suit cover up

    • Glam Dixie

The pink, there’s just so much of it and it’s such a Barbie shade of it, and the fabric looks like polyester and, and, and…I just don’t like it.

      • Stella Zawistowski

It is indeed polyester, and it’s looking mighty cheap.

        • Glam Dixie

I don’t think there’s any other way for polyester to look. The stuff should be burned but is probably flame retardant.

          • Monabel

No, there is such a thing as good polyester. VERY rare, though.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        The horror, the horror…

    • Stella Zawistowski

Not just a tulip skirt, a HALF-SHEER tulip skirt. Sigh.

      • scoobynacks

I feel like I wore the sheer part of that skirt to ballet class over my leotard.

    • ScarlettHarlot

I like that color so much on her. All she needs is a crown and pearls and she’s ready for Sunday service.

      • Sarah

Do we wear crowns to church now? If that’s the case,I might consider going back.

        • ScarlettHarlot

Oh dear, is that a regional term? I’m from the south. The fancy dress hats women wear to church are called crowns. Google “crown curch hat” you’ll see what I mean.

          • Sarah

Aaah. I am from the south too, but I hadn’t heard that one :)

            • ScarlettHarlot

Maybe it’s more of an evangelical or Baptist thing, but the women in my family have massive collections, one for every occasion: Easter, Christmas, wedding baptism funeral. I personally do not have a good head for hats so I’m glad Episcopal now :)

            • Sarah

I suspect you’re right. I’m Catholic. We do not get fancy, except for maybe Easter. ETA: Speaking of fancy hats, it’s Kentucky Derby time! Hats galore! I love looking at those.

            • ScarlettHarlot

              Yessss! America’s ascot gavotte!

            • Jacob Bowen

Oh my gosh, every year, Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus does an Easter Bonnet contest the Sunday rehearsal a week before Easter and it is TO DIE. It is AMAZING.

            • ScarlettHarlot

              Really?! That sounds amazing!

            • Kent Roby

I was raised Southern Baptist in Mississippi (then I escaped the cult and the state); I never heard the term either. I would adopt the term immediately, but “crown” in New Orleans has regal or dental connotations (I’ve made many of each type).

            • scoobynacks

Also from the South. Never heard that. Usually when someone says “crown” they mean “crayon.”

    • IraKi

Mindy NO! That is all that had to be said.

    • Anna

I’ll give her top half a pass, mostly because the makeup is a vast improvement to me and her hair and face look pretty. Skirt, shoes and pigeon-toed/I have to pee pose are all awful though.

      • Danielle

The shoes make me think of gold Gushers. Mmm, Gushers.

        • Anna

OMG, I haven’t had Gushers in ages. I love the grape ones.

          • Danielle

Buy yourself a box, tell anyone who questions they’re for my spawn.

            • Anna

              Done!

      • CelandineM

I was so relieved to see that her makeup didn’t look like she was wearing a Vaseline mask that I don’t care about the skirt and shoes!

        • Anna

Her makeup is definitely doing this look a world of good. I share your relief, the last several outings have just been dreadful on the cosmetics front.

        • Dee

          Yes! Yay on better makeup!

        • jen_vasm

I still think she needs a different makeup person. This is improved, but she should be photographing a lot better than this.

          • CelandineM

she looks so good on her show so I don’t understand wth goes on with the red carpet makeup.

    • MilaXX

I like a skinny pant with this top. I’d even accept a black skinny pant and those same shoes in black. I hate the skirt she is wearing. It looks cheap..

    • Be Arthur

Mm, a black cigarette pant would really bring things together. Have we ever seen her in an ankle pant? It could be a great look for her. I actually like the fun shoes, they just appear a skosh small and constraining for Mindy.

    • MarieLD

Still and all, I want to be her or be her bestie. She seems like so much fun.

      • clatie

Agree. Love her confidence and she is so damn smart!

    • clatie

You know what? She comes closer to making this sing than anyone else I’ve seen. Qualified praise. I love her style in general and in particular her lovely sense of color and how much she shows off her beautiful legs. Always excited to see what she’s wearing.

      • Sarah

I agree. I also agree that there’s a possible cheap appearance to that skirt, but it isn’t as bad as I would think if somebody said “Mindy Kaling in a tulip skirt.” I do not like those shoes, though, and can’t give them a pass.

        • clatie

I don’t think I can form a rational opinion on the shoes because they are so clearly KILLING her.

      • Jacqueline Wessel

I agree, this is the best I’ve seen anyone work a tulip skirt.

        • anneland

My rock n’ roll teen daughter and I agree: Uncles have it completely backwards. Skirt is cute. Top is “dumb.”

    • Jessica Freeman

The top material looks really heavy compared to the sheer fabric on bottom. I agree on a black cigarette or even skinny pant. And a something besides the god forsaken white shoe…

    • Anne Elliot

      the shoes are all wrong

    • ashtangajunkie

I kind of like the shoes, but not with this outfit. The skirt is terrible. And while I appreciate that her hair is done, I would like it pulled back loosely a bit better, I think.

    • StarburstLady

On the plus side, she an her make-up team seem to have worked some kinks out.

      • Supernumerary

No kidding. I cannot recall having ever seen her makeup look that good before.

    • mjude

yes, cigarette pant & sling backs! that sounds like a country song

    • Danielle

That’s the best her makeup has looked in a while.

    • Leah Elzinga

I feel like I’m betraying my instincts here, but it’s sunny and warm-ish and it’s making me think: formal shorts? No? But really, I’m picturing maybe navy, short tailored shorts. Especially with her darker skin tone, her bottom half would balance out her top half, she’s got great legs, and that top would look super cute. Then again: formal shorts.

      • clatie

I bet she’d look super cute in formal shorts. She’s sassy! She could be the new Miss Sassyshorts (I feel like Cameron D has ditched the shorts)

      • Jessica Goldstein

Never would have thought of it, but given her height and skin tone, I think formal shorts would have been awesome. And I normally hate the whole formal shorts thing! Good instinct.

      • demidaemon

I think that word work, especially in black or a complementary color.

    • MilaXX

Why on earth does she go out like this and then on her Faacebook and IG post pictures of herself looking like this. https://www.facebook.com/OfficialMindyKaling/photos/a.445311005510571.93434.239388882769452/695185967189739/?type=1&theater

      • marlie

DAYUM. That’s the best I’ve ever seen her look. Gorge!

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Right exactly one of the looks I was thinking of!! (and, yes IG not twitter as I said in an earlier post). She CAN look so amazing and she regularly shows off great hair and make up too, but both often fail to make it to the RC.

      • Introspective

she looks stunning in this link. cannot believe that she cant see the difference between that pic and this getup???

    • CatherineRhodes

I love it. Even the tulip skirt. It think it’s very flattering and oh, so pretty for springtime.

    • Shelby

Oh my god. I can’t with those shoes….

    • Jessica Goldstein

Honestly, that skirt minus the tulip would have worked nicely. I just tossed my one tulip skirt because I decided it looked good with precisely nothing.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Is that the top JLo wore in the parking lot recently? If so, the matching pink jeans are a better idea than the half sheer tulip skirt.

    • FibonacciSequins

Really? This all looks so cheap to me. Mindy looks happy and her makeup is better than usual, but that outfit needs to be burned, including the shoes. On second thought, don’t burn it – the material looks like it would give off toxic fumes.

    • Tricia Rose

So Top Heavy. Too thick of a fabric with the sheer tulip skirt!

      • FibonacciSequins

Look at the creases in the left arm of the top, last photo. I don’t think that’s fabric. It’s some kind of foam-related material.

        • Sarah

Says “scuba top.” I’m guessing neoprene.

    • BLauD

Tulip skirts have this weird ability to instantly age everyone who puts wears them. I’m not sure what it is, but my mind sees that hem and thinks, “Oh! Bingo night after the early bird special at Denny’s!”

    • Kitten Mittons

I feel so lost, because I disagree totally. I hate that top more than the skirt. It looks like it’s made out of neoprene, or possibly Gumby’s sister, Minga. Awful material, and an awful shape for her.

The skirt can be burned if everyone else hates it that much, but just please burn that top, too.

      • FibonacciSequins

Yes! I said below it looks like a foam-related material but I couldn’t recall specifically what it was reminding me of. You nailed it – it’s neoprene. Pukey-pink neoprene.

        • Grumpy Girl

That would explain why it’s called a scuba top. I was wondering what about it inspired acquatics, but this makes it clear.

Is all just too pink for me to form any better opinion on the clothes.

          • Kitten Mittons

            “Day Dreamer Scuba Top”

Because Fashion wants to know, “Are you guys for scuba?”
We are not. Please and thank you.

            • Anna

HAHAHA. “I’m like, the unofficial scuba king of St. Bart’s.”

Now I can’t unsee Hank Azaria in that speedo.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I follow Mindy on twitter – she regularly posts pics in MUCH cuter and better put together looks. Not sure why those shoes exist or what in the world could have let her be out in public in them. Sad.

      • MilaXX

Agreed. I follow her on FB and IG. I have no idea why her RC looks are so bad.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like how the skirt looks on her.

      • Imasewsure

Me too… I like where it hits and it isn’t bad for a tulip at all to me either

    • SouthernGirlRena

I am sure there is a perfectly local explanation of why lady stars stand with their feet in such awkward positions but I cannot come up with it. Anyone what to enlighten me?

      • Imasewsure

i think they think they are standing like models… they are not

    • Louise de Teliga

      H-I-D-E-O-U-S!

    • kimmeister

The shoes remind me of those shoe accessories in the 80’s – various brooch-type things that you could swap out to give your sensible pumps a variety of (geriatric) looks!

      • DuBey2

        This. x 1000

    • SugarSnap108

I don’t like the shirt either. I think she just needs to start over. Her makeup looks much better than usual, though.

    • Donna H

I don’t think the skirt is the most awful thing ever, but a cigarette pant would have rocked that top.

    • Qitkat

It doesn’t help to stand like this to sell a tulip skirt, or anything else for that matter. What is it with grown women? Who convinced an entire generation to stand like three year olds?

    • marlie

This was adorable until I got to the tulip part of the tulip skirt. And to add insult to injury, it’s SHEER too.

I don’t hate the shoes, even though they’re white, though the overall look is more Easter Sunday and less LA Industry Event.

Mindy’s hair looks FAB. And she gets an “attagirl” because her makeup isn’t as heavily applied as it usually is.

      • demidaemon

EXACTLY! As I put in my own comment, it’s a sheer tulip OVERSKIRT (you can see the underskirt behind it). That trio of words together is just wrong. WRONG, I say.

    • lalahartma

      HATE TULIPS SKIRTS!

    • Imasewsure

As tulip skirts go, this one isn’t that bad. Love the color, makeup is lighter than usual… just hate those fricking shoes… oh well, close to a positive from me!

    • KinoEye

That’s a crying shame. She looks lovely in bright pinks — maybe not exactly this shade, though. Yeah. Pants were called for here. The shape of that skirt wouldn’t be flattering for anyone, I don’t think.

    • Raspberry2012

And stand like a grown up! God in heaven, if I never see another lady star stand with that coy, toes pointed inward stance that just says “Little Girl Lost”, it’ll be too soon.

      • decormaven

Really! Stand like a grown woman- the stance can sell a look for me.

      • Taylor Bigler

        Thank you.

    • crash1212

Pro tip: If your feet bulge out of the shoes, leave them behind and try some others. And, yes I’m thinking a cigarette pant and some slingbacks would’ve been cute!

    • lamamu

Her poor feet! Those hideous shoes are definitely not worth the pain she is subjecting to them to.

    • Betsy

The skirt looks better on her than on the model. The top needs to be shorter to hit right at the hip.

    • julnyes

Hair and face look pretty darn good, but it starts to deteriorate as you scroll down.

    • Mothra

Love the color, can do without the skirt shape or being able to see what is clearly a slip under it, and not 100% on board with pigeon toes.

      • Mr. J.

        Tell it, Mothra.

        • Mothra

upon second look, she has a whole pepto thing going that is just not attractive. That color isn’t terrible on her, but there is definitely too much of it.

    • LadyVimes

Agreed re: cigarett pants with that top. And different shoes. The color is lovely though.

    • StelledelMare

The sad thing is, she always looks so cute on her show. Basically she just needs to tell the wardrobe department of the show to dress her all the time.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

She’s not shiny!!!!! Hurray for the makeup intervention.

    • understateddiva

As someone shaped (sort of) like Mindy, that top is super-flattering. And wearing all one color is nice, too. The skirt shape is weird, but for me, slap on a bracelet and a better shoe and this would be a win!

    • demidaemon

What’s worse here is that it is a sheer tulip OVERSKIRT. Why, I say, WHY?

    • DuBey2

I agree with TLo, even with their questioning where the top hits on her. I just think she should hire a great tailor to make sleeves & hem shorter on tops like this. Many of us are not (even when we’re at ideal weight) “fit models/size models” and on Mindy it looks like she needs everything shorter in the top. As to the cigarette pants: maybe she doesn’t feel comfortable in them. See my prior reasoning.
As to the shoes: hate hate hate
I will now follow her on Twitter as others have inspired me. Plus I love to follow funny people (talking about you, Steve Martin) on Twitter

    • Jacob Bowen

I am listening to Mindy’s book on CD in my car and I am DYING. I have not watched her show and have only seen her on The Office a few times, but DAMN is her book HILARIOUS. I LOVE the color on her skin tone and I think she could something GREAT with this top…but that skirt is UGGO.

    • BluesD

I like the skirt but I wish it wasn’t sheer.

    • ♠♥zee♣♦

Is it me or do those shoes remind me of Smurfette’s shoes for some reason?

    • holla

reminds of the thing that JLo was wearing in the same color

    • Erica

I don’t know, guys. She’s so cute and fun, but I almost never like what she wears, and this is no exception. How about some OTHER pink blouse, with the cigarette pants, and slingbacks? I agree with others that her makeup is much better, but otherwise her peeps are letting her down.

      • P M

I’m putting it down to her shape; also, some people just don’t know how to dress. Please Mindy don’t be one of those people. That would make me really sad.

    • Susan Kling Finston

      The skirt is horrible.

    • elemspbee

      as usual, fail.

    • ChelseaNH

The thumbnail picture looked so good! Oh, well, it’s a start.

    • macaroni

WHY is making regular clothing out of neoprene a thing right now?! I saw a neoprene dress at J Crew the other day and there’s no way it would flatter ANYONE.

      • P M

I’m confused myself. I’ve seen scuba fabric advertised on fabric sites. How would one wear such a thing, exactly?

        • macaroni

I’ve seen shirts and dresses made out of scuba fabric a LOT lately. I don’t get it. At all.

    • Clash D

I don’t mind the tulip skirt, it’s that large band on the top’s hem that bugs me! Also – Gurgh! at the excessive pink. Her make up and hair look lovely though.

    • P M

The shoes, the colour of the dress and her mischievous smile make up for the fact that the outfit is awful. That sleeve length and style is always unflattering and that band thing on the top is awful. I actually don’t mind the tulip skirt as it doesn’t look too far off from a sari.

Why oh why don’t brownie stars wear a faboo modern sari on the RC? sigh……

    • JynxTheCat

      Pink fish, consuming legs.
