Elizabeth Olsen in Chloé at the “Godzilla” Los Angeles Premiere

Posted on May 09, 2014

What a snoozefest of a look. We suppose all Olsen sisters have to go through a phase like this before they start wearing interesting clothes.

She’s a floating head and hands. And is that part of the dress or is that her bra in the back?

It’s not a horrible look – and it’d be a bit less problematic if the backdrop and carpet weren’t black – but it’s boring as hell for a big budget film premiere. Give us some color and sparkle, honey. You’re a movie star. We’re sending over a squadron of drag queens right now. They’ll set you right.

I like it. Some bold accessories would have elevated the look and made it more blockbuster premiere appropriate, but I still think it’s good.

  • lexilexi

This is heaven compared to some of the stuff she’s worn.. like the Met Gala look.
Unfortunate that the background is black… it could have looked so much better w/ a color.

  • GeoDiva

She looks about 30 years older!

    • Capt. Renault

I was thinking “This Olsen mom looks pretty good!”

  • She got her premiere dress mixed up with her Met Ball dress.

… but you have to establish your credentials AS a Jolie before you can pull a Jolie.

You are so right! My first thought was this is Angie’s dress. However, she does have Mary Kate and Ashley as big sisters, and I can imagine they would encourage her to go in this direction, given their penchant for wearing dark, body-obscurring looks. Which I actually quite like about them. I find it refreshing that (to my knowledge and I must admit I never watched Full House) the twins never went through a skanky phase like so many other child stars (Hi there Lindsey!). So given the Olsen DNA/influences, I think she looks pretty good.

      • No – their “troubled child star” phase was more introverted, poor girls. I don’t know if both of them struggled with eating disorders, but I do think their enveloping clothes are in part a hangover from that. They do wear them with a bit more flair than this though.

  • marlie

*Zzzzz…* Huh – did someone say something?

The dress is fine, but it BEGS for bold styling – makeup, jewelry, SOMETHING.

  • elleg929

    Channeling Jolie…

  • barbarienne

Looks like a bra strap to me.

I see she’s continuing the family tradition of doing one’s makeup so as to be as aging as possible.

  • majorbedhead

    That’s definitely a bra strap.

The whole look makes her look much older than she really is.

  • MilaXX

Pulling a Jolie and I don’t care of it is La Perla, I do not want to see your bra.

    • Fuchsiaforever

      Unsuccessfully Pulling a Jolie

  • lunchcoma

This might be the best I’ve seen her look, but that’s not saying much. She has terrible taste.

  • Glam Dixie

Looks like a bra strap to me. Those Olsen girls are allergic to color and sparkle. They went from teenagers straight to grandma land.

    • @Biting Panda

To be fair, she did just wear that fucking awful ice dancer dress. It had sparkle.

      • marlie

This is sartorial whiplash. “Fine, you judgmental bitchez didn’t like my sparkly, light blue dress; How’s THIS?”

      • Glam Dixie

Oh, you’re right, the short, blue one. My apologies, Elizabeth.

      • Imasewsure

I think she accidentally switched her garment bags and meant to wear this tired old black gown at the Gala and the ice dancer costume at her opening…

        • demidaemon

I guess she would have failed no matter what, because it doesn’t matter what event you are going to if you are wearing a)an unstyled garment bag or b) ugly ice-skating couture.

  • sojourneryouth

This could have been fine, but not in any way memorable, with better accessories, and some clarification of what’s going on in the back. Her hair needs something more sophisticated done with it, as well.

I irrationally like her, and am VERY happy she is Scarlet Witch.

    • ankali

Irrationally nothing. I’ve only seen her in Martha Marcy May Marlene, and she was absolutely phenomenal. She would have to eat a kitten to spend the goodwill I have towards her after that performance.

  • @Biting Panda

Sweetie, there’s already a tall, creamy, brunette, floating down the carpets this week. You’re gonna have to do better.

  • Constant Reader

I like the dress a lot, but bless her, Elizabeth Olsen doesn’t have the chops — as evidenced by the highly visible bra strap.

  • Kristin

    The dress is… whatever.

I am living for her hair color. I’m going to take this to my stylist. That’s the perfect… auburn? Is that what we’d call it? Love.

  • semirose

Well…her face looks nice and that hair colour is great?

  • Danielle

    Really? A bra strap? Honey.

    • Sarah

I KNOW. It is No. Bueno.

      • Kayceed

The visible bra strap is effectively obliterating any whiff of sexiness that sliver of naked back was trying to serve. Sigh.

  • Anna

Joe M. is clearly winning the Godzilla red carpet. And he’s not even in the movie.

    • decormaven

Really. Going back to gaze at him, because this look is a snoozefest.

      • Anna

Yup. I refuse to believe this is a designer dress. This is laundry day. She decided her cutout back sweatshirt was clean enough and she teamed it with a maxi skirt thinking, “They’re both black, they go together,” and called it an outfit.

  • mjude

  • Imasewsure

Not only is she pulling a Jolie… she thinks she is Jolie (although she looks more like Joan Collins Jolie to me)

  • Lex

I think this is a huge step in the right direction for the girl who just the other day wore an ice skating dress to the Met Gala. But if that IS a bra strap in the back, I take it all back and this suddenly becomes tacky. From the front, I dig it.

  • Gatto Nero

Without the various slits, this looks like an age-appropriate Halston design for Liza Minelli.

  • Alyssa

Wow…exposed bra strap on the back…wow. I feel like she made much better choices when she was promoting Martha Marcy May Marlene. Between this and her ice skating Met Gala dress, I think she’s having an identity crisis.

    • lunchcoma

I get the feeling she’s trying to avoid wearing anything revealing or with overtones of sexpot, and that she’s struggling because there’s not much out there along those lines. She’d do so much better to look to Diana Agron, who has similar goals and somewhat more success.

  • Imasewsure

I keep thinking she is my favorite Olsen sister.. and then I remember that my favorite Olsen sisters are the Fanning sisters… go figure…

  • Jessica Freeman

That is her bra…the one somewhat interesting part of her dress and she couldn’t be bothered to get creative at least.

  • kipper

You guys are wrong.. It is HORRIBLE if you are 25 years old, and no one has died..

  • Boobs Radley

Yes, that is her bra. Carrie Bradshaw, you have much to answer for!

  • sunshine and chaos

I like the dress and I see it on an eccentric 80 year old who says she doesn’t care if anyone sees the bra strap. She’s lived to 80, dammit and she’ll wear what she wants!

But I don’t understand why so many feel they need to match the backgrounds. Are they feeling insecure and this is their way of hiding? Are stylists screwing with their clients and telling them “Darling, this allows everyone to see your beautiful head”?

I just cringe when I see the clothes match the background.

  • Sarah

Kind of funny about the bra because it is such a damned sack and so body-obscuring that she probably could have not worn a bra and nobody would even know.

  • Fuchsiaforever

She’s trying to PULL A JOLIE- and it’s NOT working!!!!

  • Synnae

I liked the dress , and accessories would have done wonders but that bra strap!?! What a shame.
Either go saggy, tape ‘m up or just pick another dress (just not a Prada one please…)

  • vitaminC

Teach this gal the sequence, stat!

  • She thinks she’s Angelina. And she is not.

    • bananamuffin

^This. I saw this and immediately thought Angie would be pissed to see her next awards show dress on someone else.

  • demidaemon

    It’s a sack with a belt. A beltsack. At least she’s wearing a necklace, I guess.

  • FibonacciSequins

It’s a snooze for a red carpet event, and it needs to be hemmed, but it’s a nice dress. Her hair and makeup get a thumbs up from me.

  • nannypoo

I can’t see it, but her face looks good.

  • Kate

the dress is so puddled at the bottom – did she leave her heels in the car? She needs a trim.

  • If her goal was to have me only look at her face, mission accomplished. Neck up is spot-on gorgeous. I can’t really see the dress to think one way or another about it.

  • RawrArgh

I kind of enjoy seeing the bra strap as I’m fairly well endowed and I’d definitely have to wear one with this dress. Maybe if this became the norm I’d finally be able to rock all of those cute backless dresses.

  • Skippymom1

I have the feeling she thinks her face can pull off disappearing under the invisibility cloak that is her dress. It isn’t working.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Well, she’s certainly not going to upstage a mad as hell reptile wearing basic black.

  • Dagney

    Bra. Strap.

  • Alloy Jane

So now she decides to wear a floor length dress? And that’s definitely a bra strap. Why go backless if you’re going to show your underwear?

  • DagnyReardon

She’s swimming in that dress and the Cartier necklace is lost. Looks like something from Claire’s.

  • CT14

I like her hair color. I wish the Olsens had kept their original noses, though. Stupid Hollywood making anyone with an interesting feature chop it off or blow it up.

The dress was meant to be Angelina’s. Thanks, little Olsen, for keeping it from her, but you needn’t make the sacrifice for Angie. Have fun and wear sparkly clothes!

  • Laylalola

If she was going to show her bra strap then she at least could have made it a bright color. The outfit itself still wouldn’t be interesting but it would have made her moreso.

  • lucasuk82

I kind of like the shape and simplicity on her, but that bra strap is unforgivable. Kudos for wearing a bra when you need one, an interesting colored t shirt under the dress might have been a good solution. Also needed more dramatic jewelry. I picture a saphirre blue t shirt with Cartier “Tutti Frutti” bracelets and huge diamond earrings.

  • What’s the point? Next….

  • RescueMe23

What’s with all the strange facial expressions?

  • Radish

She needs to work on her posing, for sure.
