Christina Hendricks in Zac Posen at the Variety Studio

Posted on May 30, 2014

It’s almost June and if you’re a celebrity, you know what that means!

Big, heavy, long-sleeved dresses! Break ’em out, girls!

This is dramatic and pretty – and it almost looks good on her – but we can’t really sign off on it. As we said, it’s way too heavy and off-season for this time of year. Even if she’s chilly, there are better options than something that would look perfect for a Christmas party. And besides, we’re not convinced she’s served well by adding volume up near her neck and bust. It looks a little bit better in the portrait, when it’s clearly been arranged and styled, but the minute she sits down, all that fabric shifts up. Great color, though. They styling’s pretty good too. Love the ring – and for once, she’s wearing shoes that don’t make us wince. If it was November we might be more forgiving, but even then, we’d probably tell her this was Not Her Dress.

    I disagree. I think it’s smashing.

    • scoobynacks

In late May? I’m getting heat stroke just looking at her. Also lots of fabric at the top of a dress is a not so awesome idea even in winter for her. I know better than to do that to myself and I’m a mere mortal. That should be second nature to her and she clearly didn’t even think about it. Love the color and wish this were a different time of year to maybe make it a little easier to appreciate, but I don’t get all the raving in the other comments.Team TLo all the way here.

  • Nikko Viquiera

I actually love it! The color looks amazing on her! And more importantly, she looks cozy in it!

  • Rae

The colour looks wonderful on her.

  • MilaXX

Love the color & styling but it’s doing bad things to her boobs.

    • MoHub

In the profile shot, her boobs are just about touching her waist.

      • MilaXX

There’s also a weird seam thing happening on her boobs and the wig is sitting a tiny bit too high on her forehead.

        • Annorledes

The weird seam thing, could that be… erm, nipples? Cause that’s what I’m seeing.

          • MilaXX

No if you look closely in the first 2 pictures you can see the seam or darts of the dress. It’s especially prominent on the left side of the screen. When she is sitting you also can see the outline of the strapless bra it appears she is wearing in picture #6. It’s likely an indication that the dress is a bit tight.

    • kbshee

My inner mother voice is shouting ‘stand up straight’.

  • SewingSiren

Beautiful dress that is well suited to her, but seasonally incorrect. Jewels and shoes are very nice.

  • FibonacciSequins

It’s not Christina’s dress, but she should wear that color every single day.

    • Most of us should wear that color every day. That is one color most every single woman can wear send have it be very flattering. The style of this dress is doing nothing for the girls. At all. Ever.

      • Laurie Cubbison

I absolutely love that color. My all-time very favorite color.

      • FibonacciSequins

I like the boatneck-off-the-shoulder neckline, but I’m wishing she would have ripped off all that extra fabric and accessorized with a short, eye-catching necklace.

    • Tracy M

And her hair and makeup are softly superb.

  • joancarol

The cowl neck looks like an Ace bandage pressing her boobs down.

  • BlairBear

I just don’t get Zac Posen. His work just seems so stuffy, overworked, and dated to me. Every now and again I will really like one of his big dramatic gowns but usually they don’t do it for me.

  • AlisonS

I’m calling it. Suede shoes in summer micro-trend.

  • Danielle

A Zac Posen I didn’t wince at. You go, girl! The color is faboo.

  • Judy_J

Love the color, but that mid-calf length makes her look stumpy. A hem length of mid-knee or just below the knee would have worked in her favor.

  • Chireader

Anyone else see a resemblance to Jaclyn Smith in picture #6?

  • berkeleygirl

If it had been sleeveless, it would have been lovely. Speaking as a very full-breasted woman, full-length sleeves are rarely your friend.

  • That woman takes SOME photo—seriously gorgeous. The color is perfect for her.

  • I see what you mean, but I love it anyway. Don’t really like that hairstyle though.

  • Love you guys, but have to disagree. She looks spectacular. That color is incredible on her. Hair is perfection. She epitomizes Roger Sterling’s description of the beauty of red heads. “Their mouths are like a drop of strawberry jam in a glass of milk.” Ravishing.

  • PastryGoddess

I disagree, I think she looks amazing. And that is her color forever and ever amen

  • GillianHolroyd

Besides loving the color, you know what I like? It’s not a lacy, flouncy, fringed schmatta in black. It’s got clean lines and she looks spectacular.

  • KateMaryC

I actually think that the small amount of volume almost offsets her bust. I am busty and have small shoulders, like she does. It creates a tough silhouette. This adds emphasis to her shoulders, evening things out down below. I love it. Maybe just pull her hair back.

  • Denise Rambo

Mad Men has a bunch of actors that I think should just stick to wearing their characters’ wardrobes … Christina Hendricks should just wear Joan’s clothes and GOD KNOWS January Jones should always choose from Betty’s closet!

  • I love you guys, but I have to disagree. She’s stunning, and epitomizes Roger Sterling’s quote about the beauty of redheads: “Their mouths are like a drop of strawberry jam in a glass of milk.” That color is lovely on her.

  • Alyssa

I completely agree that it’s off season, and that the top is as flattering as it could be. That said, for her, I call this a win. The jewelry, shoes, and color are all amazing!

  • Anna

I think she looks fantastic – love the longer hair on her too. I will concede, the fabric bunching on top is a bit much, but Christina has a long neck and can pull it off. She really is stunning on so many levels.

  • Ashleigh

Is it the drag queen in me or does she need an inch or so more lift?? They look really low in the profile shot…
    But, stunning

    • FibonacciSequins

She does need more lift. She’s probably wearing a strapless bra and it’s not enough support.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

From straight on I think it looks pretty good, but from the side that extra material on the top is dividing her chest in an awkward place.

  • I think I would love this 150 zillions *if* the neck skirt were maybe 2 inches shorter. Almost the way it is in shot 4.

As it is, I can only love it 100 zillions. Especially as when she sits down it tries to eat her. *yikes* 🙂

You never want to look like you are wearing zombie outfits, which are constantly trying to get to your brains.

  • Jessica Freeman

It’s a gorgeous color on her, but with the fit issues it really is not working.

  • The Versatile Chef

I like the top but I’d be on board with a higher hem – maybe knee length.

    • DuBey2

Or at least 1 1/2 inches up. I agree totally, & especially with those lovely shoes.
LOVE her hair & this color, though.

    • demidaemon

      I thought that as well.

  • MilaXX

You know what’s weird.? I’m rewatching MadMen. In the first 2 seasons Joan had this purple dress with a pink yoke/bow. Every time I see it I think it’s the cover of Do Me or Be Me. So now I every time I see her, i think of the book.

  • Carlos E Martinez

I like the color, but it does look a bit heavy for the season. On a side note, is her hairline looking odd to you? Not all her hair?

    • CatLady

Probably a wig. She wears them most of the time.

    • MilaXX

The wig is sitting too high.

  • SugarSnap108

I don’t think that neckline is very flattering for larger-busted ladies, especially from the side view. But she still looks beautiful.

    And I want that ring.

  • I agree with you guys (mostly always do) and disagree with people who say it looks comfortable. It looks like it’s SUPPOSED to look comfortable, but in reality, it’s snug and precise so it’s constantly shifting and riding up or down and you’re futzing with it (the boys caught that about the top).
I mean, it’s a really good try. I never like when she’s all cleavage; I prefer her demure. I do love this color on her, and I really like her hair and makeup.

Keep going, Christina! You’re getting warmer.

  • Anne Silberman

Love the color on her. I feel for her – it is soooo difficult to find a dress that fits properly and flatters the figure when you actually HAVE a figure!

  • Qdahling

I think she looks stunning, but jeez, it must be so exhausting to lug those gorgeous bazooms everywhere! I think I have a third of what she has and sometimes it tires me out.

  • Shawn EH

The color is so awesome though, and she’s not rocking Joan drag, so I’m willing to sign off on it. And that jewelry most of all!

    • MilaXX

It’s actually closer to Joan drag than a lot of the stuff she normally wear. Replace that shawl color with a bow or a scarf, put her hair in a beehive and she’s ready to walk on set.

      • Shawn EH

Replace the loose cowl with a bow or a scarf, and it’s not the same dress at all. I guess you can see Joan in the color and hem length, but the dress reads as very modern to me, a sort of Posen-y swipe at DKNY.

  • Tricia

Honestly I really love this, but you’re right about all the fabric around her shoulders. Would’ve looked better without that. The color is really beautiful on her.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I looks odd from the side, like a skosh too tight. But otherwise I love everything else about this (in fall).

  • Gatto Nero

The fabric choice is wintry, but the color looks fabulous on her, and the peek of bare shoulder is pretty.

  • Doesn’t “Not Your Dress” come with every Zac Posen dress?

  • traceyishere

How does she wear a dress without a proper foundation garment to support her cleavage? Big risk. Good color and styling, though.

  • dashwoodstole

Give that dress back to Bianca del Rio.

  • jay

I have to admit I’ve been wearing a lot of heavy, apparently-off-season stuff lately. What tends to happen this time of year is that you end up freezing your ass off once you’re inside because everyone reacts to the weather outside by cranking the AC up way too high. So I can totally defend this on those grounds, plus she looks completely amazing.

  • Imasewsure

It’s a pretty color but the overall effect is heavy (and wiggy). No love

  • Sophie

Love the earrings and the big ring! The dress looks mostly strange from the side.

  • Tracey Magyar

I think she looks great. Love the dress, shoes and hair.

  • Cheryl

I’m always surprised how pretty Christina Hendricks is compared to ‘Joan’ her character on Mad Men. I think I like the dress better then the Uncles, but I would have lopped 10 centimetres off the hem.

  • Janet B

Beautiful color and the jewelry is to die for, but the dress doesn’t flatter her figure as well as it could. Almost a winner if it were winter.

  • decormaven

I love the color in both ring and dress- but not together. Needed a little break from such a wide swath of fabric.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love the ring and earrings, HATE that June brings out the winter wear in Hollywood.

  • crash1212

Seems pretty season appropriate to me, but I live in San Francisco where I’m wearing boots, tights and a cardigan and still have my heater on. Rock on with your long sleeves Miss Christina.

    • kimmeister

It was super warm on Monday! I was at the SF Zoo to see the new red panda and got sunburnt.

  • Julie Chase

I love the neckline on her, it’s elegant.

  • nannypoo

Not flattering on her. I like the color but the shape is awful.

  • Eric Stott

Beautiful color, but she’s swimming in it. She should also consider wearing Joan’s undergarments – that’s quite a bit of nipple show-thru for such a conservative dress.

  • JP

I’m just gonna pretend it’s November and call it a WERQ.

  • marlie

The color is gorgeous on Christina, and the shape is really flattering. My problem is that the shawl collar area does weird things to the proportions of her torso, and make it look like her bust is lower than it actually is.

  • From the side, the neckline makes her bustline look like it sits way too low.

  • formerlyAnon

Va Va VA VOOM! The color is fabulous for her, the neckline shows plenty of creamy pale skin flatteringly in the close up, and full length it’s sexy and figure displaying.

Yes, the almost literally giant shawl collar seems a bit proportionally too much in the full body shot and it’s too heavy for the season.

But I still think she slays all comers in this one.

(edited for attack of the adverbs)

  • beebee10

I don’t know you guys….I think you are being a little to hard on the look. I think she looks really good, not smashing, but good.

  • Fire anyone that had anything to do with this shoot!

  • d4divine

So much fabric. I am sweating just looking at her.

  • J. Preposterice

WHY ARE YOUR BOOBS NEVER PROPERLY WRANGLED? are you trying to hoink them up with a strapless bra? GIRL. I know I am on about your boobs a lot, Christina, but as a fellow busty woman I have to tell you SOMEONE IS DOING YOU WRONG and that someone is your bra collection.

    • demidaemon

  • kimmeister

The jewelry is stunning. I’ve never heard of layering quartz over hematite.

  • ktr33

Gorgeous color for her, gorgeous ring, make-up/face and hair look great, but I find the dress a bit dowdy. Don’t like the cowl/shawl thing at the top, or the mid-shin length at the bottom. Not Your Length. And those pointy little suede shoes; they lack the boldness of the dress, and seem like an after-thought, not part of a look.
Also, the shoot posing is cheesy.

  • Is she one of these “I hate my knees” women? We’ve seen them, Christina! They are just as gorgeous as the rest of you! This look is SHAZAM from the waist up, and sad trombone from waist to hem. The color is hers to own, and the red pumps were a great choice. She just needs to stop wearing dresses that hit just below the knee. Leave those for the Michelle Dockerys of the world.

  • alwaysanswerb

I am just NOT on board with whatever crack her wig-wrangler is smoking these days.

  • e jerry powell

That color knocked me on my ass. LOVE IT. Everything else about the dress, meh.

  • demidaemon

For a Zac Posen, this is remarkably simple, and I’m loving it on her, though I agree it would work better as a fall dress.

  • lamh36

Man as a busty woman myself, I would love to know where she gets her undergarments from. Whatever she’s wearing, she ALWAYS have her girls strongly supported. I love to know what brand she uses.

    Is that weird?

  • katiessh

I love the blue, but I agree that there’s something off about it.
The problem with her, and even jessica pare and january jones is that they never look as good as they do on mad men. But they can’t exactly go around wearing costumes all the time.

  • FridaStaire

    Almost looks good? Fanfuckingtasic!

  • smh4748

I really want this dress and jewelry. For winter, of course. 🙂

  • livesarah

I don’t understand why the need to be seen wearing a particular garment before anyone else is seen in it trumps common sense. It make me cringe to see under-dressed celebrity ladies (and it’s only the ladies…) wearing summer garments in Winter (north american winter!) and winter garments in Summer. It’s so stupid.

All that aside, this dress is *wonderful* on Ms Hendricks. Agreed about the way it creeps up at the neck when she is sitting down, but that’s a minor quibble compared with what she’s usually wearing.

  • Man Dala

That colour goes perfectly with her hair and skin tone. She looks lovely.

  • Melissa Brogan

Too much extra fabric up top and seems just a tiny bit too tight around her waist and hips. But it’s a fantastic color on her.

  • Jacquelyn

The color is great on her but really not a fan of what the top is doing to her bust. When she stands in profile, her breasts look saggy. However, her hair looks great.

  • crashtestbonnie

I honestly think she hasn’t looked prettier in a very long time. That color is GORGEOUS on her and Jesus wept she finally found a shoe that flatters her foot! I understand the cons, but for my dollar I love this. Attagirl! Also, that jewelry? Shut up and take my money!!

  • Mothra

It looks great on her but honestly if I can wear it to work, then it shouldn’t be on anyone famous.

  • Orange Girl

Honestly I think celebrities do this so they can be pictured in upcoming fall fashion mags. Love the jewels.

  • Pterodactyl111

That’s a great color for her.

  • melanie0866

I have to say that at least once a day. One day, they’ll hear me.

  • suzq

it looks better sitting down than standing up.

  • Beautiful shape and color! : D

  • steph

Her face and hair as spot on. I agree that bodice is not doing her bustline any favors. The color is perfect for her.
