Rose Nylund. That’s our Rubicon, bitches. We can’t. We won’t.

How about that Agents of SHIELD finale? Better, right? Not pee-your-pants excellent or anything, but we finally got to see the outline of the idea of what the show could be. If they keep Patton Oswalt in the cast (and keep Lunk Hugejaw far away from it), that would be a huge step in the right direction. Our question, to those of you who stuck it out to the bitter end, is this: Do you still think she needs to go or do you think they’ve rehabbed her character? We’ll say this: we don’t lovelovelove Skye, but she’s the only character who manages to remind us every now and then that we’re watching something with the Joss Whedon name attached to it. You send her packing and the show gets even more generic, as far as we’re concerned.

  • I think she may have taste issues. How a pretty girl always manages to look a bit shit is beyond me.

    Potential Spoilers…

… the knowledge that she is a monster improved her immensely for me. I rewatched the first episode the other day, and was reminded that it started pretty strongly, then took a massive nosedive. The first episode had the sort of pacing and wit I expect from Whedon, but after that it went into a holding pattern for 8 episodes before it pulled out.

ETA my aeronautical metaphor was inconsistent and out of hand, I apologise.

    • demidaemon

I don’t think your metaphor died quite the way you think. It worked fine for me. 🙂

      • I just am not sure you can be in a holding pattern from a nosedive…

    • Violina23

I think the first episode was the only one that Joss himself was involved in — after that I think it was his brother and his wife running the show.

I found it enjoyable enough to not sit on my DVR for more than a day or two, but it wasn’t until the Captain America crossover (which I, unfortunately, saw BEFORE I saw Captain America) that I felt it really became a legitimately exciting show where I not only DIDN’T know what was going to happen, but I actually felt like I cared

  • Anna

As Blanche said to Rose, “I’ll say! To the untrained eye, that polyester could almost pass for silk.”

ETA: That collar is making my eye twitch.

  • eandh99

I’m watching AoS primarily for Agent May, she never disappoints

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      LOVE Ming-Na Wen.

    • CelandineM

Hate-fu FTW! Every scene is improved by her presence. Also I still can’t believe she is 50. I didn’t look that good at 30.

      • Mothra

She is older than I AM!? How is that EVEN POSSIBLE! I’ve been watching her since she was on As The World Turns!

    • Donna H

  • MilaXX

Now that they stopped trying to make Ward & Chloe a thing and Ward is gone or at least evil and not around every week, she can stay. She fits. I don’t know how he does it but a little Patton Oswald in your show is almost always a good thing. He can stay too.

Oh yeah the outfit sucks. That blue polyester or whatever is fug.

    • FibonacciSequins

      Patton Oswalt improves everything.

      • FunButNutz

        Sort of like bacon……

  • Karen Belgrad

I guessed wrong… I totally expected to scroll down and see she was wearing tights and Doc Martins.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

That I could have lived with!

  • MoHub

She couldn’t even bother to get both collar points outside the jacket, and the jacket itself could go up a size to lose the gapping. I have fewer issues with the outfit than with the way she’s wearing it. Looks as if she needs a better bra as well.

  • Danielle

    Irrational hate list.

  • gabbilevy

Shot past “hot” and ended up at “hot mess.” Nothing flattering from tip to toe — and I’m saying this as someone who thinks she’s gorgeous and not half bad on SHIELD.

  • TRAGIC! I was going to say “Barbara Bush called…wants her jacket back” but even hers would be better than this crap!

    • alyce1213

You nailed it, Bert. It’s so BB-style!

      • Kitten Mittons

Barbara Bush is exactly right. Even if it fit properly, I don’t think I’d like this for her. Tip to toe, every decision should be rethought.

  • hughman

Honey, Hulk burst out of that blazer once and stretched it. Size up.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I would be thrilled to never seen Grant Ward again – he’s a misogynist wanker. No redemption arc, thanks very much just eff the eff off.

Skye’s fine, she got better and it looks like her origin story will form a big chunk of Season 2 anyway.

My current concern is about the wellbeing of Fitz, I love the character and Iain De Caestecker’s performance! Does anyone know any inside gossip about whether the actor wants out or is this just a bit of a character cliffhanger to tide us over to Season 2?

    Oh, the outfit…? Not great.

    • Myra Amler

Didn’ care for Fitz/Simmons at the beginning of the season, but will admit that they are my favorites now (and of course Melinda May). Fitz better be back!

  • FibonacciSequins

I drifted away from the show after Coulson discovered SHIELD altered his memories, but came back for the finale – much better than I expected. Skye is one of the most interesting characters, or should I say one of the characters with the most potential. It seems I dropped out just as the season was starting to pick up, so I’ll watch those episodes and give it another shot next fall.

That Alice + Olivia outfit is just ridiculous. To me it screams Joan Collins. That’s funny that you associate the Golden Girls with the 90’s – to me, it’s all 80’s, big shoulder pads and silk pegged pants with high heels.

  • frannyprof

I’m also not fond of ankle bracelets.

    • bluefish

      Tacky as hell.

  • JauntyJohn

As for the outfit, I am not outraged. I’m not enchanted, but I’m not outraged. She gets some personality points for trying to have fun in it.

As for M.A.o.S. – I watched from the beginning and it really grew on me. I think Skye’s character is fully rehabbed and I especially like the father/daughter dynamic between she and Coulson.
A couple of the twists in the fniale were pure Whedon and I thought they were really fun. (Especially the bit with Bill Paxton at the end.)
Personally, I thought Ward did a good job “playing” bland and then being different when he was Dark Ward, but he has emerged as the actor/character people love to hate even more than Skye.
Bottom line I think it’s fun and it keeps me coming back.

    • FibonacciSequins

Bill Paxton really tore it up, especially at the end!

      • Myra Amler

Paxton was brilliant. He does bad so well. Gonna be hard to top him as a villian.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

I spent a fair amount of time yelling at various characters to “just kill him!” (ie Ward) during the last few episodes. I never really bought his ‘thing’ for Skye – it all came over as horribly creepy though!

  • kimmeister

That print looks look it belongs on the chairs on the lanai.

  • Heather H

It got better once Captain America 2 plotlines threw a wrench in the works but I will still take the freaking awesomeness that is Arrow any day. *That* was a season finale. Plus Arrow has 100% more hunky shirtless men than AoS.

    • JauntyJohn

Can’t argue there on the hunk factor. Arrow knows its stock in trade and doesn’t get all “but we’re serious actors/storytellers!” about it.
Saw the five minute teaser for “Flash” and my interest shot up 100%.

  • Myra Amler

Loved the Agents of Shield finale. While I was not a fan of Skye to begin with her character has grown on me. Never cared for the Ward character, kind of wish May had gotten rid of him. Hoping he won’t see much screen time next season.
This outfit makes her look very short. It also screams matronly. She is too young to be wearing this.

  • Imasewsure

Seriously Betty White would look adorable in that outfit… why in the hell did this chick think she would? Make 90’s fashion go away please

    • Betsy

Betty has the charisma to sell it. And it is age appropriate.

  • LeelaST

Gave up on Agents of Shield a few weeks ago. Loved May & Coulson, the one character I couldn’t stand was Skye. Sorry, Chloe. Also sorry about your outfit, very “hospital PR person.”

  • Frank_821

As stated the way she’s wearign it is awful. she doesn’t have the right proportions to make it work. On the model it is reasonable

As far as AoS: I agree the final episode was the first to truly feel like a Whedon product. A great balance of tongue-in-cheek comedy and dark angst and forboding twist for future plotlines. Long term consequences combined with entertaining villains. The fights with May, the moments in Cybertek and the banter between Coulson and Fury are pure Whedon. You can tell Joss does not have a direct hand in the show since it took so long to live up to the potential of the pilot.

Skye has had her ups and downs throughout the season. It’s great she finally got interesting and formidable as character in the last few episodes. Her whole demeanor when she and May raided Cybertek as well as her chats with Bill Paxton were a huge step up

I don’t mind the continuance of Raina who I found a very banal villain in the first half of the season. Once she came back, she became a much more nuanced and way more interesting once her true motives were revealed.

Having written that, I want to enter some major geekdom:

The theories are that Skye being the child of “monsters” might indicate she is one of the Inhumans. In the comics they are a group of engineered super beings created by an alien race called the Kree. The Kree are blue aliens (hint, hint). The Inhumans were originally settled in the Himalayas (2nd hint hint). They get superpowers from exposure to a compound called the Terragen Mists. That would tie in to all of Raina’s talk of evolution

    • JauntyJohn

You, sir, have an EXCELLENT theory there.

    • Violina23

Yep, that’s the theories I’ve been reading too. Apparently the Kree factor into the Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming out soon? I’m not a Marvel Expert, so I’ll take people’s word for it 🙂

      • Frank_821

That would not surprise me. The Kree are 1 of the earliest alien races created in Marvel Comics. The other are the Skrulls who are shape shifters and a version of them were allegedly the alien invaders in the Avengers movie

Actually you could make an epic space opera center on the Kree and the Skrulls. They are long time enemies who have been at war with each other for thousands of years. They both have good reason for it. The story is cool but not worth going into here

The GotG movie could be interesting although it would ahve been very ballsy of them if they had included the character of Mantis. Her character would have given conservative christians a major aneurysm

      • Kimmu

Ronan the Accuser is the villain for the GotG movie, and he’s Kree, so yeah, they will be factoring in the movie.

  • Shawn EH

Pro-Skye, but not going to pretend to save this getup. Start over!

  • Let it out

Why can’t celebrities do ’90s COUTURE instead of crap from the discount rack at Sears? Dior, anyone? OK, maybe not for this venue. But still!

    • bluefish

  • Alloy Jane

The modern day Scarlet O’Hara-Butler has an outfit made from her shower curtains?

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

I agree Josh Whedon has to have a mix of brilliant, beautiful and or nerdy young people/characters in his shows.

  • crash1212

I can’t with this. I cannot. This is a put-it-all-in-a-pile-and-burn-it scenario. After that, shave her head and start from scratch. Hire her a makeup person – and if she paid somebody to do that to her, they should not only be fired, they should be banned from the Makeup Appliers Union. For life.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Save Skye, ditch the outfit — although I have to say FitzSimmons are the most Whedonesque characters for me.

  • Mrs. O

    Gramma! I love your jacket!

  • I liked Agents of Shield right from the beginning, but it definitely got better in the last few episodes. Looking forward to seeing where they take it next season. Agent May is my fave character, but I do find Skye interesting, too.

    Not loving that outfit, tho.

  • Anna

Why-Oh-Why is there a 90s revival?! The 90s were almost worse than the 80s. This doesn’t need to happen.

  • Mothra

Frumpy Frumperson. I like those silver shoes on the model though. Everything else can go straight to Goodwill. Do Not Pass Go. Do No Collect $200 and most certainly DO NOT WEAR dyeables as your shoes to an event. ICK!

  • GeoDiva

Her outfit is ugly, however on the show she has really grown on me. I am so glad, I stuck with AoS. I loved the last episodes, especially after the events of CAP 2. Hope Ward never comes back, there is no redemption for him in my eyes.

  • Fuchsiaforever

The hell am I looking at!!!

  • CT14

I am still meh on Skye. I’m hoping her specialness gets her off the show midway through the next season. Or maybe gifts her with a new persona entirely.

Firefly gelled so much better and with fewer episodes. So did Buffy, for that matter.

I really hope Ward is gone for good–Trip has more chemistry. I wouldn’t mind losing Fitz.

    • But Dollhouse never quite got there. Whedon, sadly, doesn’t always get it right even in projects he is more closely involved in.

I’m just hoping Fitz’s coma/whatever isn’t enough to stop Simmons from jumping Trip. She needs to get laid.

  • P M

Oh no. No no no no no no no no. Fellow BKs, Please tell me shoulder pads aren’t coming back!

  • JulieTy

The Stuart Chandler collar is making my eyes twitch.

  • enuma

There’s a running collection of all the various nicknames for Ward over at the Onion AV Club. Ex: Boeuf Traitorsteak, Bland McNazi, Biff Betrayal.

    Lunk Hugejaw is kinda perfect.

  • Molly Dowd

As someone who is new to TLO I always had the misconception that nerds and fashionistas were at the opposite ends of the spectrum. To see all this AoS discussion on a fashion blog has officially made my day several times over. I love you guys.

  • If only she could act.
