Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace at the “Maleficent” London Photo Call

Posted on May 12, 2014

Why, Miss Angie. We’re positively tickled to see you having a little fun with your red carpetry. Of course, on other people, this look might come off a bit on the serious side of things:

Angelina-Jolie-Atelier-Versace-Maleficent-Photo-Call-London-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Angelina Jolie attends photo call for “Maleficent” held at the Corinthia Hotel in London in an Atelier Versace dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes.

But for Angie, who never met a shapeless black dress she didn’t love, this is downright giddily whimsical. We don’t know if birds actually play a part in the story, but there’s definitely a slightly dark fairy tale vibe to that print which serves her well here. And while we loved that she was dressing for the character on the red carpet, we dreaded seeing an array of black getups from her, since it doesn’t exactly mean she’s stepping outside her comfort zone. This makes for a nice surprise. Sure, it’s still mostly colorless, but it has a great shape to it and a certain kind of wit. Plus the shoes are gorgeous. Win all around, we’d say.

The makeup looks great. The shape of the hair’s a little odd, though.

      She must love those Louboutins.

      • kaybee

I forget where I read that she had them custom made for her, so she definitely loves them!

Love this whole look for Angelina. Her face is flawless!

        • AnaRoW

That explains why they fit so well.

    • Sarah

Ooh, cool. Did the black version of those shoes she wore in the pic last week have blood on them too?

      • BlairBear

those shoes are really fucking ugly

        • Sarah

I rather like them, at least for the in-character pole dance she’s doing for Maleficent.

          • BlairBear

white shoes are always fighting an uphill battle for me and blood droplets, nude mesh, and cutouts are not the way to win that battle for me. i didnt hate the black pair especially for this event. Also white dress with white shoes seems kind of off to me

            • Sarah

I agree with your points, to which I’d add I don’t approve of flesh-toned anything, pretty much, but yet still I like these. Anomalyshoes.

            • BlairBear

haha so many wrongs make a right? I can see why they are cool / fitting for the movie but I just can’t with them

            • Judih1

Did she once wear a vial around her neck with Billy Bob Thorton’s blood? Guess she has a thing for blood. I liked the shoed in black, not not feeling the white ones – especially with this look

            • BlairBear

yeah I think so. I am hoping that blood isn’t real. but maybe it is billy goat brad’s donation in which case I wonder what that says that she put it on her shoes and not in a locket

    • imperfectlaura

I don’t love what the top is doing to her boobs, but there is something about this look that is alluring and eye-catching

      • 3boysful

Agree. Dresses with a lot of gathers, esp in different directions, always seem to need zhuzing so the gathers fall in flattering places.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

You guys, this is the wax museum version.

      • elirt

She always looks like a wax figure of herself! It freaks me out and reminds us all that she is unreal. No one looks like that all of the time, not even her.

      • Karen Belgrad

I had the exact same thought! if it wasn’t for the side-eye in the 2nd to last pic, I might have actually thought it was the wax museum version, LOL

(Disqus is fixed now, I can move my comment to its proper home)

      • http://www.beautifymylifeblog.com Jessica

Should have read down in the comments — I just said the same thing.

      • greyhoundgirl

        Ultra-Botox

    • GillianHolroyd

      Flawless.

      • VicD

Love this! Her personal best IMHO.

    • Synnamin

I love this dress, and I LOVE these shoes – especially that they have blood drops at the heels.

      • Beardslee

        good catch! So much fun.

      • holla

it’s so on point! her character is suppose to have been good before the betrail, then got blood thirsty.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Love that dress, but is that a bit of nude elastic around the sides of the shoes? They are clever but they look a bit cheap.

    • JauntyJohn

Man, I love this. Chic and witty – and that’s just the dress.
The shoes go to a whole other level.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Is anyone else having trouble with disqus? It’s letting me post but not respond to anyone else’s posts!

      • Sarah

Jeez. NOW it’s working. I tried to say something to you downthread, and on my screen it said “at Foodycat” even though I typed “at Alicia.” Which, we know, took place months ago. Then, when I refreshed, it was back to what I typed. So, it was some weird Disqus timewarp. Spoooky.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Ah yes! Reply button has returned! I’ve noticed the @ thing, it’s been happening a bit.

      • MilaXX

Yeah it was acting weird for me too. I guess they are tinkering with the code again.

      • kimmeister

I couldn’t even edit the first comment after I had posted it!

    • deelup

      This is a tad Stepford.

    • Karen Belgrad

HomeOfficeGirl… Disqus won’t let me reply direct to you… I had the exact same thought! if it wasn’t for the side-eye in the 2nd to last pic, I might have actually thought it was the wax museum version, LOL

    • tonibaloney

What’s up with the white powder all over her left arm?

    • Sarah

      @foodycatalicia:disqus yes. Most irritating.

    • Sarah

Also, I don’t know why it added foodycat. Because I typed “At Alicia.”

    • ktr33

She’s been doing a lot of these curlicue shoes for these promo appearances. Wished she’d done a color to pick up some of the admittedly limited color in the dress (dove grey? that tiny hint of light dusty coral?). White shoes almost always look cheap to me, and matchy-matchy, since you almost never see them paired with anything other than white. Also, her face looks gorgeous, but more like a really gorgeous wax figure than a gorgeous human.

    • j_am

Do those shoes actually come with the blood marks? Because I love that.

    • KayEmWhy

      Homage to Joan Collins?

      • Wink

My thoughts exactly! Her hair is from the Joan Collins wig collection, and the dress (with removable shoulder pads) is from season 3 of Dynasty.

        • KayEmWhy

          Great minds……….

      • ktr33

me, too, except I thought Krystal:

    • http://sleepingfoxstitchery.weebly.com CLoverleaf

I’m kind of in love with this whole pole dance. THE SHOES ARE DRIPPING BLOOD. YES GAWD!

      • boweryboy

I didn’t notice that! Except that’s a Cinderella reference, not Snow White.

        • ashtangajunkie

This is Sleeping Beauty though. Doesn’t Aurora prick her finger on the spinning wheel? Maybe that’s the blood. :)

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

To quote Terry Pratchett “the very oldest stories are, sooner or later, about blood”

          • boweryboy

I can see that, but I was thinking more literally – in the fairy tale, one of Cinderella’s stepsisters cuts off the heels of her feet and crams them into the glass slippers.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

Snow white should have thorns dripping blood too – although not specifically the shoes.

      • http://sleepingfoxstitchery.weebly.com CLoverleaf

        Whichever, it’s COOL! :p

      • gabbilevy

A little surprised she’s wearing the white versions of what looks like the exact same shoe, but I;m not complaining. Those heels are fab-U-lous.

        • alyce1213

I’m not complaining either. They’re Maleficent shoes, perfect for the situation.

    • Danielle

I’d like to curl up in that hourglass curve of her waist.

    • ktr33

it reads a little Krystal Carrington to me, with the shoulders and the ruched waist tho I do like the pattern. Wish she’d done a different color shoe — maybe a dove grey to pick up some color in a dress. White shoes usually look cheap to me, and matchy-matchy since they’re so often paired with white. And like someone else said, that mesh makes it even worse.
Her face looks gorgeous, but like a gorgeous wax figure, not a gorgeous human.

      • Imasewsure

You are spot on about Ms. Carrington… those broad shoulders and that tiny little waist… well, and also the helmet hair… :)

    • zenobar

Love everything except the Peds disposable-shoestore-footie bit.

    • Victoria Anzalone

That dress is killer, but this is the most wax-figurine-like I’ve ever seen her. Everything from the neck up is giving me the wiggins.

    • alyce1213

I absolutely love this — perfect dress and shoes for this poledance, which I’m actually enjoying.

    • marlie

Angie looks pretty fabulous. I love the dress, her hair and makeup are perfect, and she clearly loves the shoes, since she’s worn them in two colors so far. She sort of looks a little like her wax figure, but that’s an observation, not a complaint.

    • Noah

Well, she had that raven in the original Sleeping Beauty film, so I’m assuming the bird is a nod to that. Also, this may be the only movie premiere where those shoes (delightfully kitschy as they are) would be appropriate. Well played.

    • lunchcoma

This is more interesting than anything I’ve seen her wear in quite awhile. I’m glad that she’s not pulling a Jolie on this pole dance.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Guess I’ll go against the grain and say that I don’t like this at all. Weird and stiff and matronly, and the hair is awful.

      • CanIbeFrank

Yes. Matronly. How old is she? She dresses very maturely.

      • ktr33

my comment (somewhere) is similar — the dress gives me a Krystal Carrington vibe with the big shoulders and the ruched waist, and white shoes almost always look cheap to me, including here.

    • PeggyOC

The hair almost looks like a wig.

      • DTLAFamilies

I’m pretty sure she wears a hair piece. I wonder if her health problems led to hair thinning?

    • Scott Cooper

You’d almost think she was wearing a wig.

    • Courtenay P

      damn she is gorgeous!

    • ashtangajunkie

Red lipstick AND a white dress with shape! Whoa. Maybe she found out about the whole ‘pulling a Jolie’ thing and decided that we could all bite her.

    • http://smalldog.wordpress.com/ Cadence Woodland

Any news on her lip color? Because I want it in a pretty visceral way.

    • Judy_S

She looks great and I love the macabre whimsy of the print and shoes. BUT what is going on with these shoes which appear to have built-in nylon footies?

      • MilaXX

I’ll take nylon sides over plastic every time.

    • MilaXX

Love the dress and the shoes. The hair is a bit helmet-y.

    • SewingSiren

This is her best yet. Love the dress . Love the shoes . Love that it isn’t black. Love that it is still wicked.

    • mjude

love the look. the heels on the shoes look like they are dripping with blood which is fun.

      • SewingSiren

Well there. I didn’t see the blood. Even better. I had to go back and look at the black pair she wore with the jumpsuit and I don’t think there was blood. First time ever white shoes beat black shoes.

        • mjude

so agree about the white shoes over the black shoes.

    • Jean Genetic

And this, my friends, is why Ms. Jolie is a movie star, not just an actress

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Love the dress and the appearance of blood on the shoes (very fitting for an evil queen!)

    • Vtg Fashion Library

      I’d tap that.

    • julnyes

Fantastic shape and print on the dress and the shoes are fun and on point for this red carpet. The shape of the hair is a bit odd, but I love her makeup.

    • Cheryl

Love the dress, the fit, the print, and the shoes, omigawd, THE SHOES. And miracle of miracles, they actually fit her!

    • http://www.beautifymylifeblog.com Jessica

Is it just me, or is she looking more and more like a wax figurine version of herself? It’s not that she looks bad, just…artificial.

      • Heather

not just you. She also looks really really really thin–not sure if it’s just lately or if I just hadn’t seen her much recently

    • Denise Rambo

Her hairline looks really fake in that third picture and the last one could be of her wax model at Madame Tussaud’s. I do like the dress but I HATE the shoes!

    • KinoEye

On her, it’s straight-up sassy. I probably will never like those shoes on anyone, but she still looks faboo.

    • Cele Deemer

Are the heels of those shoes bleeding? The dress is amazing. The shoes? I dunno.

    • TwiddlyStun

What is wrong with pressing a hem? Otherwise, I love the dress for her. I’m never a fan of shoes that look ridiculous, but they work here.

    • BlairBear

those shoes are hideous. White and nude wedges with cut outs and blood dripping down them? those shoes may be the ugliest things I’ve seen in a good long while and I watched the Solange beat down of Jay Z today

      • Imasewsure

I actually like the shoes (ugly but still fierce)… I’m “upvoting” your comment about the definition of ugly which is pretty funny…. not to read the tabloids or anything but….

        • BlairBear

haha I appreciate the up vote and I am glad you enjoyed my definition of ugly. I admit my not finding them fierce comes to a personal thing about white shoes especially with a white dress.

    • suzq

This is the best I’ve ever seen her. Absolute perfection. She’s never really known what to do with her hair, so I give her a pass on that. Those shoes…wow.

    • ElaineMarie34

Love the dress. But man, AJ puts my bitchy resting face to shame.

    • greymain

      just STUNNING !!!

    • BlairBear

I am still not convinced this is a living breathing person

    • Jessica Freeman

      Nailed it.

    • decormaven

      Great dress!

    • Heather

      is she wearing a corset?

    • Janet B

      I love, head to toe!

(Can’t believe this thought is about her.)

    • GeoDiva

I’m loving the heel on those Loubie’s!

    • Klee

I want that dress!! (or at least a more affordable version of it). Shoes are cool too.

    • Sam Smith

It also really plays well with the backdrop.

    • Sunraya

Jeez, I have to say it. She doesn’t look healthy. She does look waxen, and her hair isn’t healthy looking, her skin looks off, something’s up with her. Or maybe she wants to look like this, so if this is a role model for girls on how they should look, I protest.

      Nice dress, though.

      • Imasewsure

Honestly I think if she actually smiled, she would look completely radiant and you might see her in a different light. I think it’s just “serious Angie” and that comes with wan seriousness (and somber hair color and pale pale makeup)….

    • R.A.

Maleficent has a pet raven named Diablo :) hence the birds.

    • RedRaven617

Does anyone else notice the red, blood like droplets on the back of the heels? It’s an interesting, very fairy tale appropriate look.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

I love love LOVE that those shoes have a nod towards Elizabethan slashing–it works perfectly with the fairytale theme.

    • smayper

She is insanely beautiful, but for some reason this makeup really reads “plastic” to me. As if she doesn’t have real skin, with pores and texture. Or blood vessels. Maybe all the blood ended up in her shoe heels.

      • ShaoLinKitten

I agree. Combine that with her expressionlessness and it’s a little disturbing. On the other hand, she either has amazing skin or a killer make up artist, because damn that skin is too perfect.

    • Drunken Housewife

I am in love with the dress and shoes. Astonishing look in my opinion.

    • Gatto Nero

Great dress for this event. The blood effect on the heels makes these shoes an interesting choice, but the mesh sides just remind me of those awful nylon peds my aunts wore instead of hose in the summertime.

    • vickilu

Are we sure this is not a wax figure?

    • nannypoo

She always looks like she’s been embalmed. Waxen, yet peaceful. But wow do I ever love the dress and shoes.

    • missinmass

      Not a werq?
      She looks fabulous!

    • Truthiness2U

I really like that dress, the birds, the bits of pink flowers. And I adore those shoes! the dripping bits of blood? totally speaks to me in and of itself, much less for her character, and with that dress. Great combination to my mind, the bits of pink on the dress, the bits of red on the shoes.

The only thing I don’t like, really is the hair. Not great.

    • BobStPaul

      Absolutely hideous shoes.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Great Googly Moogly – sometimes I forget how utterly stunning she is…

    • Bonnie Blue

The dress is a good choice with the print of birds that aren’t cute little plump birds, as something about the print looks a little mysterious and scary, appropriate for the theme of the movie.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

This is fantastic; I love the dress, and the drops of blood on the shoes.

      • Annistella

thank you for pointing that out! I hadnt noticed. Those details take it to fantastic.

    • what not

Man, I want to see her in Fan Bingbing’s winged dress.

    • Aidan B

Can’t deny she looks great, but every time I see her on her own I feel like I’m looking at her wax figure.

    • LadyVimes

Gorgeous dress and I adore the shoes. Well done, Angie. Snaps for you.

    • cocohall

This looks like what Maleficent would wear if she suddenly showed up in the year 2014. Cleverly done there, Miss Jolie.

    • traceyishere

      The shoes are custom

    • conniemd

I love this dress and love it on Angelina. She looks terrific.

    • Pennymac

Perfection! Well, except for that awful hem. I’m picky, huh?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I covet this dress. I would wear this in a heartbeat. Angie looks really good here-and that would be Sleeping Beauty’s blood on the shoes? Brrrr….

    • JP

LOVE the dress. Don’t know about this film, but in the original Sleeping Beauty cartoon movie, Maleficent’s familiar was a raven.

    • somebody blonde

I wonder if she knew what the backdrop was going to look like. The birds fit in pretty well.

    • MartyBellerMask

      Perfection.
      (Except for the wiggish-looking hair.)

    • French_Swede

Shouldn’t this be a WERQ? Or at least an “atta girl!”?

    • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

      DANG ANGE! Get it, girl!!!

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I love it. It almost has a story – the jagged branches and severity almost make it look like she’s a shattered glass figure, and the blood on the heels – so Cinderella’s evil stepsisters, or Odette. There’s a fairy tale being written in her outfit and my favorite outfits are the ones that practically tell stories in and of themselves.

      • Shawn EH

She’s is working those bloody heels, it is such a good joke but it’s only in good taste if the shoes actually feel amazing!

    • AnnaleighBelle

I love her so much and that dress actually give her hips. I could do without the shoulder pads, though.

    • kategs

Man I love this! I would wear that dress tomorrow (I wish!) and the shoes are perfection.

    • quiltrx

What a terrific dress! Would that I had a shape that could handle that bodice-gathering…very much my kind of fashion.
I’m glad that she’s enjoying herself with this poledance–you might as well, right?

    • Sweetvegan

      gorgeous dress!

    • Alloy Jane

I love everything but the nude mesh part of those shoes. What is that about?

    • Sylvia

This is a WERQ to me. Hair and makeup are on point, the lipstick and red ring she’s wearing pick up the very subtle blossom on the branches, and the dress is fab.

    • Jeremy Thomas Porta

Those shoes look fun…in a sadistic twisted sort of way. Are they meant to a commentary on the thinly veiled torture devices that pass for most heeled shoes?

    • Clydette Wantland

      She looks so….so….plastic.

    • schadenfreudelicious

She does look rather “waxy” in this photo, but here is the part where i get to yammer again about how i saw her in the elevator just prior to this and in person she truly looks radient, aside from my intital shock of being inches away from her, i really was taken aback by how beautiful she is..and her hair looked less wiggy for some reason…I can also report I saw Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern) the next day taking tea in the lobby and she looks great too (no crazy eyes to be seen :)

    • JaCory Deon

She looks *almost* flawless here: with better hair, it would be the business. She looks great though.

    • Solokitty

Sorry. Don’t like the shoes’ uppers. Love the heels, but it looks like she’s wearing peds with a low cut shoe. No like.

    • colorjunky

      Very Joan Crawfordesque!

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

She doesn’t look real. Something very Madame Trussauds about her.

      • LambeeBaby

I never noticed that until recently. She seems very flat in pics. It’s a little spooky.

    • Mothra

Did she have pointy implants put into her shoulders? Why does everything she wear look like she left the hanger in? I do not think it is a good look. EVER.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I hate those shoes from the bottom of my very being.

    • Tee

On paper this makes no sense. It’s lovely in person. Must have bird dress and shoes.

    • ktr33

Taking another look at this, and it’s starting to creep me out — how bony she is. Look at her wrist bones jutting out. And her legs have that blueish tint of skim milk. And her head has the look of a an anorexic’s head, strangely big and thrust forward.

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

I want those shoes!!! Shame I dont have her ankles tho

    • bluefish

Love the dress, hate those shoes in any color. Hair of politician’s wife but she looks beautiful. The flecks of light pink on the dress are very artful. Gorgeous fabric and a wonderful fit. Wish I could pass her my powder compact just to take off a bit of the shine.

    • yllas

I think she looks awesome. I love everything about her look – EVERYTHING – and I am not a fan of AJ. I would KILL for that dress, how I love a bird print! <3

    • French_Swede

This is a lovely look for her. The subtle nods to Maleficient (the birds, the shoes) are a great touch. Plus, she actually looks happy to be there!

    • Akemi

      Those shoes are AMAZEBALLS
