Met Gala 2014 WERQ: Beyonce in Givenchy at the 2014 Met Gala

Posted on May 07, 2014

Kim Kardashian ran to the ladies room and had herself a good cry after she saw this.

Beyonce-GIvenchy-2014-Met-Gala-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Beyonce attends the 2014 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a Givenchy dress accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Step down, bitches. Bey’s on the red carpet. That is some seriously fierce shit going on there. We suspect she was actually radiating heat. You can almost feel it in the pictures.

We’re not fans of sheer skirts – and the fact of the matter is, this could go very plain on a lesser wearer, but she really knew how to bring the drama here. We especially love the underplayed eyes and hair, which were inspired styling choices to go with that netting. Let the lips be the center of attention here. Smart and chic.

I don’t want to get the Beygency on my ass, but I’m not really feeling this for some reason.

    • Oh, good. I really hate this look, and I need the validation. While I do like the hair ornament and the earrings, there’s something a little tawdry about that much sheer leg at the Met.

      • Coleen

Agreed. Hate everything but her head.

      • RussellH88

        It just feels flaccid.

I think that’s why I don’t like it. It’s hanging on here. It’s not any sort of Diva “BAM HERE I AM”, it’s just sort of limp.

        • Carly Clement

I agree! I was so disappointed when I saw this…. with a theme as easy and amazing as those one she should have done more!

        • SugarSnap108

I’m with you. Her head is glorious, and then everything below is just kind of hanging there. (The clothes, not the bod.)

          • Judih1

      • lundibleu

I’m not keen either – from the front it almost looks like a pair of shorts and waistcoat with a very expensive and fancy sheer dressing gown over the top. Hair and make up are fantastic though, and actually I don’t mind the top half of the look from the front. Just not the back or any of the bottom half.

      • myandyleigh

It’s not just about so much leg, either. There are many, many, many other shots of the back of this thing where you’re staring directly into the vertical smile, I mean there’s a good three inches of butt cheek showing in them. So she’s either going commando or wearing the most delicate of thongs. I really don’t want to see someone’s butt cheeks hanging out of the peblum of their dress, not even butt cheeks like Bey’s. It’s just tacky.

    • AnaRoW

It’s probably the fact that the top part looks like a robe.

      • Wink

Yes, reminds me of one of those creepy ‘shorty’ men’s robes that’s just a little too short!

        • ccinnc

Her butt cheeks are hanging out, ugh. Other online photos are more revealing.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

And if this were on any other woman at the Gala we’d all be having a big old laugh at their expense. Beyonce, dear, if your butt cheeks are hanging out, even if it is a world class quality butt, it’s still tacky.

      • yeah i’m quite agree with you hahaha

    • suzq

I’m not a fan of the peplum around the hips. The print/netting is too busy and it looks frumpy to me. Bey is working it for all it’s worth, however. And Jay Z looked hot.

      • Trent

Completely agree that Bey is working the hell out of it, and I can appreciate the idea behind this look, but she still looks like she’s at a high-end bordello in Madrid. Beautiful face, though…

    • Nicholas

It’s one of those outfits that are going to be awesome, when you stitch cut-outs together for your own frankendress with differents head, torsos, legs, and shoes.

Looks like the designer felt like making a frankendress, too.

    • ChiKat67

This feels like RiRi’s outfit to me.

      • MilaXX

Rhi Rhi did a sort of white Morticia Adam’s look.

        • KiP07

I felt like Ri was dressed more like Aaliyah circa Rock the Boat.

      • Kent Roby

This feels like Charlie the Tuna’s “outfit” to me, as in “Catch of the Day”. But, dayum, that face!

      • murt

That was exactly what I though – Rihanna would have pulled this off better.

    • SylviaFowler

Because it’s hideous; because it’s something she could’ve worn to any other event any other time; because it doesn’t meet the dress code. The reasons are many.

    • Darren Nesbitt

When I first saw it I thought Tina Knowles showed up with her son-in-law. It looks too matronly.

    • sojourneryouth

Agreed. Even though most of the parts should scream FIERCE!, it all seems a little under-done and half-assed. I don’t like that lipstick color on her–it’s just a shade or two off. The top of the dress (that does, indeed, look like a fancy robe) just isn’t flattering, and the veil looks straight up crafts store. While I love the silhouette from the waist down, I can’t get behind the outfit as a whole.

    • rgv

      I agree! This is awful!

    • luludexter

I also hate this look. So you are not alone!

    • VicD

Agreed. BUT – thinking of how much this probably took the wind of Kim K’s blue satin sail is delicious.

    • AyaisMUsikWhore

Or its the Met Gala where you are supposed to wear something not so pleasant. It’s an art gallery event of some sort and your supposed to wear something, well, of artistic value and “weird”. This to me is safe especially for this event. It’s almost as if she didn’t want to be read to death but still will because it is ugly. It is ugly no doubt. Rihanna on the other hand, she wore the right dress at the wrong event. That’s dress is Grammys, not exactly Met Gala

  • Golfkat

I don’t know if I consider it a WERQ when it doesn’t really have anything to do with the theme. For me Met Gala looks should be rated by how stylish they are, how aesthetically pleasing they are, but most importantly if they’re on theme! Theme is everything!!

    • WendyD

A-MEN! I was so disappointed to see this endless parade of sheer and sheath gowns when the theme should’ve had every woman bringing out their GIANT BALL GOWNS.

      • Golfkat

Right?! It’s so rare that you get an opportunity like this, even the Oscars aren’t necessarily for giant ball gowns. How anyone could wear anything but their biggest and best is beyond me!

      • boweryboy

There were quite a few ladies who brought the Charles James ball gown realness to the red carpet – most of them were in Zack Posen, of all designers (Dita von Teese, Lui Wen, Karen Elsen, Hailee Steinfeld, and Sarah Silverman).

I suppose a classic ball gown is not as eye catching or as interesting as Lupita’s Prada disaster or Rita Ora’s tacky panty flashing (yeah, her dress was slit so high in the front that when she pulled it up to avoid stepping on it she flashed her good china. Thank god she was wearing panties).

      • luludexter

Hallelujah! Amen! This was about ball gowns – structural, innovative, exciting, dramatic — everything James was about. Go big or go home!

    • SewingSiren

The exhibit is Charles James, but the theme was “White tie and decoration” which for the women is pretty vague. Can’t say she’s not decorated at any rate.

      • SylviaFowler

But if one googles Charles James, it’s not vague at all. He did extravagant 40s and 50s ballgowns. It was the easiest theme they’ve had in years.

        • SewingSiren

The theme was “White tie and decoration”.

        • alyce1213

Charles James did ball gowns, but not exclusively. If every woman showed up in a big ball gown, it might get tedious — and very crowded. Also, ball gowns are not for everyone.

      • Golfkat

The way I understand it is that the theme is Charles James: Beyond Fashion, but the dresscode is white tie. Either way it seems like there’s an understanding that people try to dress in accordance with the theme of that year’s exhibit.

    • KiP07

There definitely was a fair contingent of ladies who fit the theme well (is it weird that I thought the Olsen twins nailed it?), but as with previous years, a LOT of people just wore whatever. Anna Wintour basically wore her usual Chanel a-line gown.

  • colleenjanel

I don’t like it, but that could be my irrational Bey dislike showing.

    • MilaXX

Be careful The Beygency will get you!

      • KiP07

This seems to be a Beygency free space given the majority of comments are not generally in favor of her

    • Coleen

Agreed. (both on the dislike, and the acknowledgement of my irrationality with such)

  • Julie Chase

Nope. I hate this. All of it except her lipstick.

    • Julie Chase

Never mind, I hate that too. Heh.

  • sugarkane105

NOPE. Nope, no no, not for me. Sorry, uncles. I’m so tired of this sheer-maybe-its-lingerie-as-a-gown-who-knows-just-look-at-my-butt trend. Beyonce is better than this.

    • veronicafish

No, I don’t think she is, actually. Let not the Siren song of her voice blind you to her questionable fashion choices…

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The lingerie as outerwear has worn out its welcome for me. There is nothing new, fresh, or creative about it.

  • Scimommy

I love the head. Everything else is leaving me very blah. Now I’ll step back & let everyone ‘splain me why I’m wrong.

    ETA: Er, or not.

  • hughman

It begs for a fan and a mantilla.

    • 3boysful

So true! (Hope you are feeling better!) xoxo

    • MoHub

“And a getaway car.” (per The Boys in the Band)

    • Sartorial_She

Spot on. And great to see you!

  • Susan Velazquez

It’s better than her last Gala look. I love that last shot with the dress arranged so perfectly around her

  • appliquer

Does she realize how great she looks with this haircolor?

  • Danielle

It’s not my favorite thing she’s ever worn but she is so fierce it physically hurts to look at her.

    • demidaemon

EXACTLY. As I said in my own comment, “BAM!”

  • Not feeling it. I feel like the head net thingie would’ve worked better with something simpler. Maybe if the dress ditched the peplum and about 80% of the spikes and whatever else and if it wasn’t sheer on top of strappiness. Way too fussy.

  • boweryboy

The bead work is exquisite, but I’m not loving the look overall – especially from behind.

  • @Biting Panda

Eh. I’m not feeling it. Her posing is bugging me, the dress is feeling a bit like a robe, and her makeup is bordering on corpsy.

  • thecitysleeps

    Yeah, I don’t love it.

  • deelup

I did a gay gasp when I saw this. And I’m a straight woman.

  • alyce1213

I love this, I love the styling, the accessories, her attitude, all of it. In the past, she’s worn some of the worst, most vulgar garments to the Met Balls but this is a complete turnaround. I want Fashion at this event, not just RC dresses, but most are boring and standard. There’s nothing boring about this.
Eta: I like her so much better with brown hair.

    • Kitten Mittons

Yay! I’m so surprised by all those who don’t like it. I LOVE IT! Maybe it’s not on theme, but I do love it all the same, for all the reasons you stated. I can’t stop looking at those pictures. Love the darker hair. Too fabulous.

      Met Gala Most Improved? Possibly.

      • alyce1213

        Definitely Most Improved!

      • Introspective

Met Gala attagirl for sure. but I dont know if Id be crowning it a werq (sorry uncles TLo, the Beyhive and the Beygency for disagreeing)

        • Kitten Mittons

          The Beygency attacks at dawn.

Question: If they are the Beygency, are Rihanna’s fans the Rih-gency?

    • butterflysunita

I love it too. I think part of the problem is this year’s theme was confusing–“White Tie and Decoration”, and Charles James. Looks like Beyonce was going for the “Decoration” theme? At any rate, she looks beautiful and it’s dramatic.

  • LeelaST

This was not one of my favorites. I admire the craft but the end result is not a “gown” and seemed more boudoir fashion.

  • Cathy S

It looks like fancy lingerie. I cannot get behind this at all. I love the earrings though.

  • Mrs. Julien

  • SewingSiren

Love , love, and love the hair , make-up, and veil. THE VEIL! That I really love. Also love that it isn’t tight tight tight. Okay it’s transparent, but tasteful. Elegant and beautiful. I think her best look ever.

  • Kathie

This is the same look she wore to the Met Ball two years ago. MEH

  • PlethoraofBooks

I can admit that it is a statement… but in terms of meeting the theme, and personally finding it appealing? This was a no.

Anyone else feeling underwhelmed this year? There were very few looks that I said “LOVE this!”

    • Shelby

What WAS the theme this year? I intentionally didn’t look it up so I could see if I could figure it out from the pictures. Kirsten Dunst’s dress makes me think some kind of space theme … but that’s all I got. (Maybe this explains Lupita. She was going for Sexy Alien).

      • Qitkat

MilaXX posted a good description on Lupita’s dress page.

    • MilaXX

I saw a few looks that I liked. Hailee Steifeild looked great. I also loved Karolína Kurková not sure if they will make the blog though.

      • Vegas Girl

I loved, loved, loved Karolina Kurkvova’s dress! Easily my favorite of the night! I really hope she at least makes it into a red carpet rundown.

        • sugarkane105

Of all people, she deserves a WERQ in my opinion.

        • Introspective

Karolina is known to shut shit down so Im waiting with baited breath. remember the turban a few years back??? bitch is fierce. Uncles??

      • PlethoraofBooks

I LOVED Karolina Kurkova. I liked Hailee’s dress, hated the shoes. I liked Reese’s EXCEPT for those dratted dart pleats. If the color scheme on Dita’s had been reversed, I would have liked her dress much more. Blake Lively and Jessica Alba were pretty gorgeous, but didn’t fit the theme really. There were a few others, but those were the major ones that I can remember.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I liked Hailee Steinfeld’s dress-it looked as if the designer were referencing one fo Charles James’ designs without being too literal. Liked Charlize Theron, too.

    • BobStPaul

Absolutely agree. I found look after look to be very disappointing. Including this one.

    • SewingSiren

There were lots. In addition to the above , I loved Hallie Stenfeld, Sarah Silverman, Florence Welch, Eryka Badu all for vastly different reasons and special love for Giovanna Battaglia.

      • PlethoraofBooks

See my reply below. I will add Sarah Silverman, though it looked too tight in the bust. I feel like this year I feel really cranky at a lot of the attendees to the Met Gala.

  • crash1212

My first thought was that Rihanna turned it down. Not what she was going for. I love everything from the neck up – everything going on from the neck down not so much. I feel like I’ve seen a version of this everywhere at every damn gathering. Let the sheer bathrobe (or sheer ANYTHING) trend die now.

  • Coleslaw McGraw

I don’t like the chestal region. I feel like i can see boob makeup. But i like how it looks from the back a lot .

  • sienna elm

Eyecatching – yes…but I do believe her lipstick needs a touch up…or a better liner job. Sadly, that’s all I can see. 🙁

(although I do like the head-net)

  • Corsetmaker

I love this. Very glam 1930s. Wouldn’t work on most but does on her.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

How insane is it that a transparent dress is one of the classiest things I ever remember seeing Bey wear?

  • Daisy Walker

Sorry Uncles, I only like the earrings.

  • marlie

I didn’t really love her dress. It seemed like a sheer, beaded bathrobe to me. BUT, I think she looks incredible from the neck up.

  • Qitkat

  • majorbedhead

I really don’t want to see anyone’s ass cheeks, even Beyonce’s fabulously-sculpted ones. I’m with the majority here who find this dress bordering on vulgar.

  • Anna

‘salright. I like it better than the other ones so far, but not really awe-inspiring. Would kill for the earrings though.

  • BlairBear

This is so desperate to be seen as hot and such a retread of other givenchy and other Beyoncé . I think Kim looks better than Beyoncé.

  • MilaXX

Love this. I’m happy to see someone finally understood that when you are wearing a dress like this you do not need ALL the jewelry.

    • SewingSiren

Yes. The dress IS the jewels.

    • mjude

      girl, I didn’t recognize you…no more cat!

  • Mary Lauer

Nitpick: the fingernail color is a total misstep, IMHO.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Sorry Bey, but Jennifer Lawrence of all people did this better when she wore that little veil at last year’s ball — and it worked better with her dress, too. This isn’t very interesting, just busy. Jay, on the other hand, looked pretty great.

  • Dadoong21

Beautiful. Glamour and drama. I love it.

  • JaCory Deon

She looks like some severe, Spanish duchessa and I’m living for it! While it isn’t everyone tastes, I think the dark lip looks amazing on her (as does darker hair, but she’s in this blonde phase now so oh well).

  • StillGary

I would have liked it better w/out the Kiss of the Spider Woman veil.

    • Qitkat

That is a huge part of why I do like this, and the incredible earrings. Because it really is a dress slit up to here and down to there. The veil takes it to another dimension.

      • decormaven

Yes, the veil lifts the look for me. She’s selling this look like hotcakes.

        • demidaemon

Exactly. The styling actually uplifts the dress, which is what the styling should always do. She looks like a young drag widow out on the hunt for a new man, and that is why I effin love this look.

  • I love the netting. Sexy as hell. The dress provides a great silhouette.

  • numenah

Here’s my beef: given the theme, I expected to see couture-level construction, intricate manipulation of different fabrics. Yes, Bey looks stunning, but not a WERQ for me at this event. Just look at what James could do with a sheath.

  • Scott Cooper

The lips are too brown. If the red had been brighter no one would be able to take their eyes off her. As is, she looks like she’s in a ’40’s film where the color has gone off.

  • BlairBear

fabulous as a bathrobe or swimsuit coverup. the veil does and door knocker earrings do not make it a formal look. I unreservedly hate this

  • Sarah

She looks great; I love it. This outfit and Lupita’s combined to make me think there was a 20’s theme to the night when I saw the pics before I knew the theme. However, this is a FAR better deployment of sparkly net.

    • Qitkat

I have toggled back and forth between the two posts, and the distinction is shouting at me. But I’m standing by my comments on Lupita, and have to say, I can’t imagine these two ladies trading dresses. In this case, they each chose a memorable look that suits them best.

  • Ginger

Now you know why Kanye looked so pissy in all of his and Kim K’s pics.

Disclaimer: I can’t stand any of them…this is based purely on looks alone and the creepiness that is Kanye trying to morph Kim in Beyonce.

  • FibonacciSequins

I didn’t like this when I first saw it, the photo was dark and I couldn’t see the detail. I’m no fan of sheer skirts myself, but in this case the sheerness absolutely works, as does everything else. Bey served it up.

    • numenah

I have to say that the more I look at the last shot, the more I love the way the bottom of the dress gently trumpets out.

  • jw_ny

Initially it’s a WOW look…high impact, drama, and intrigue….it’s different. After spending time looking it over, I have several quibbles, but overall I agree with the werq. She looks stunning, and I love how her lipstick matches the jewels in her earrings (and I typically dislike matchy-ness and over-sized earrings.)

  • KT

Ugh I’m not into this. I want to like it– I love the pattern of the embellishments, and I definitely appreciate it for being bold, but this just looks more like an awkward Halloween costume than a fabulously stylish look to my eyes. That dress looks like a really opulent housecoat, as evidenced by the little ass napkin in the back. Love the earrings and the makeup, but it’s just not coming together for me as a whole.

  • tallgirl1204

so, I am again not in line with popular wisdom, but I’m not loving this. Although the headpiece calls back to the 1920’s, like Lupita’s which I liked. I don’t care for the gown– it is not flattering to its beautiful wearer.

  • BayTampaBay

Do not like anything from the neck down. Above the neck, make-up, hair, earrings and net “turban” headpiece are perfection.

  • Vtg Fashion Library

Why do her boobs look photoshopped? Methinks someone went a little cray with the makeup paddle. Love the net-head, but the makeup is WAY heavy, and the garment needs editing.

  • Pennymac

Shutting. It. Down. This is beyond fierce.

  • Kathy

I usually hate transparent skirts, but I’m loving this look on her. Bey is divalicous.

  • Imasewsure

Wow just… wow… I’m not usually a fan of her fashion but this is electric and stunning

  • formerlyAnon

Love Love! LOVE her head. The rest of it reads a bit too unstructured and boudoir for my sense of the occasion, but I will admit she pulls it off.

  • Constant Reader

I’m usually first in line to get annoyed about sheer skirts, but Beyonce has coverage where it’s needed, and more importantly, she’s working the shit out of this outfit. Plus, it’s the right venue to bring the drama.

    • Qitkat

Part of the fun in being a Bitter Kitten is the astonishment and joy in contradicting oneself 😉

Had to go google to get it exact:
“The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.”
      –F. Scott Fitzgerald

      • Constant Reader

That Fitzgerald quote is one of my favorites!

    • alyce1213

      Me too (peplum approval).

  • Linderella

The length (depth?) of the plunging neckline pushes it too far into swimsuit cover-up, to me. But I think it looks lovely from the back. Everything north of the shoulders is a solid A- (the half-point nick is for the lipstick smear).

  • stubbornthoughts

I must adamantly disagree. This is really weird to me, and I hate it. The silhouette is gorgeous, but THIS…my eyes. No.

  • SusiePamudji

This is a no for me. Her head looks amazing, but even Beyonce can’t work underbutt for me.

  • Raspberry2012

WOW!!! Amazing – and I don’t really like her, but I have to give her props for this.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love it. She usually goes for flashy, but this is…smoldering. Much better, and a much more interesting choice.

    • Kitten Mittons

      That’s an apt description.

  • vickilu

TLo, what’s your “grading” system for this event? After last year’s punk theme went somewhat ignored by the attendees, I assumed that it’s more of a suggestion than a theme, but you guys emphasize dressing *appropriately* for each specific event– so I wonder how important you think that rule is for this? I ask because while this might be a great getup, is it the right thing to wear to a gala with a Charles James-esque dresscode?

As far as I can tell, only Taylor Swift and SJP got it right in that respect.

    • SewingSiren

The theme wasn’t to try to copy Charles James, there was a very vague theme of ” White tie and Decoration”. At a Charles James event it is of course appropriate to give a nod to his fabulous construction and over the top elegance (sometimes to the point of vulgarity). But some of the attempts of copying James were disastrous (Topshop cough). He is not an easy one to recreate.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

So far the TopShop dresses that I’ve seen remind of shiny prom gowns, and that’s not a good reference.

  • leahpapa

I really love it; I’m getting Josephine Baker realness. Plus, it’s enough on theme (decorations? check. dramatic train? check.) without being too literal.

  • andreawey

    love the burgundy lips!

  • smayer

This is trending toward a Beyonce “of course.”

  • Molly

huh uh. It looks like she’s wearing an apple protector net on her head.

  • Terri Terri

This was worth it just for the joke about Kim Kardashian. She looks pretty amazing, but I can’t warm up to the veil/whatever thing on her head.

  • MannahattaMamma

Mermaid in a fisherman’s net. Not a good look for anyone. Although I do sort of love that hairnet thingy. Like glam cafeteria lady.

  • uprightcitizen

Pretty cool way to show up, especially after that hysterical “The Beygency” sketch on SNL (I so would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when she watched that). But I have examined the pics here pretty closely, and it looks like the left side of her lips have been deliberately painted just a bit outside of her natural lip line, but just on one side. Is that possible? Intentional? It’s not like her lips need enhancement anyway, but why asymmetrical?

    • Wink

Perhaps her make-up artist was Drunk in Love. (I know, I know.)

    • Gatto Nero

Sometimes natural lips aren’t perfectly symmetrical. Maybe her makeup artist was fudging and overdid it? I want to see the Before shot.
      Loved “The Beygency”!

  • Total WERQ. I love it from head to toe.

  • Christine Hart

Wouldn’t call it a WERQ, but I love the back of it.

  • Jessica Freeman

Look, this woman brought a man with her to fix the bottom of the ‘dress’ for photos. She was at least committed. It was not my favorite of the night, but she knows how to bring it.

  • Guest

Sorry, Uncles. I love you, but I hate this. And “WERQ”? Were you fellows fearing being hounded by The Beygency?

  • bitchybitchybitchy

The only thing in favor of this is that Beyonce’s makeup and jewelry are well done. The dress is just another example of the fashion world’s unexplainable love for sheer over opaque. It’s a tacky, beaded mess with a designer label. Nothing fierce about it.

  • veronicafish

I love you, Uncles, but I really hate this. And to give it a “WERQ”? Oh my.

  • dschubba

I’m torn. I’d like it more if it weren’t sheer, but the beading doesn’t work without it.

  • ashtangajunkie

I like this. It’s very “Beyonce Goes to the Met Gala.” Can’t hate a woman who knows her look and commits.

  • Glammie

Sorry guys, this one really doesn’t work for me. It’s got a torch singer vibe, so I can see it working onstage or for some kinds of parties. But in this context, it just looks silly to me.

  • Taylor Bigler

I do not like this at all. It’s very warmed-over 2012 Beyonce Met Gala to me. That one was much more show-stopping and this just isn’t surprising or interesting to me. The veil looks cool, but totally out of place on this outfit. The front looks like a chic kaftan and the back sports bra straps are confusing.

    • Kitten Mittons

That’s funny, I felt the exact opposite, but I did see a parallel between the two dresses. I like this one more, maybe because it felt like a more grown-up version of that 2012 dress. I can see how that could be interpreted as “less interesting.” The 2012 dress was definitely a show-stopper, though, and I did like it.

  • Gatto Nero

The netting veil, lips, and earrings (and attitude) *make* this look.

  • coco ebert

I see Tina Knowles had nothing to do with this outfit. Beautiful.

  • Shawn EH

I like the balance between body conscious and solid coverage where it counts; imagine Christina Hendricks in something from this line!

  • Joanna

Absolutely gorgeous. Solange has bested her at this thing for a few years but judging by this and what Solange wore this year, Beyonce threatened to the release the hounds on her sister.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I… I don’t like it. I think it hides her best physical assets, and despite the plunging neckline, looks frumpy. Except for the neck up. Her head getup is gorgeous.

  • DeTrop

I’m impressed. After last year’s gown, I was dreading her choice. She looks grown up, in a good way.

  • KayEmWhy

Not a fan of her or this outfit.

  • smayper

No one has mentioned the nail polish yet. Cringe.

  • melanie0866

And she was showing some serious underbutt. I vote “No.”

  • e jerry powell

I am not loving that neckline.

  • Gloriana Reginata

From the neck up, fantastique. Everything is harmonious, elegant and exotic. From the next down…oh noes! The slit up the leg leading to the slit down the sternum makes it look like a robe, not a dress (not to mention, too much of a good thing); the strapping on the back looks way complicated compared to the rest; and that little poofy miniskirt with the sheer below… Blech.

  • Beto

Dont like. AT ALL. She looks like Morticia but in a very BAD way.

  • RutGot

Wow, I have to totally disagree with this WERQ. I think this is a terribly unflattering dress and that’s even putting aside my personal hatred and weariness with the sheer dress trend. Nope, not seeing it AT ALL.

  • krelnick

To me, this is the very definition of the Fug Girls’ “scroll down fug.” In their pictures, which had more light, the back looks like she’s wearing lederhosen under a ginormous hairnet. WREQ.

  • NinjaCate

I love the look, and I think this is much improved from last year, but I have to say, not even Bey could hold a candle to Rihanna’s look this year.

  • Jacob Bowen

I don’t consider Beyoncé “fashionable” by any means but WOW, she looks FABULOUS!

  • artgirl9

Glad to erase the diaper image from her Time cover.

  • We may be in the minority, T+Lo. *laughs*

I loved this look on Beyonce. It was also one of my favorites of the night along with Karolina Kurkova (#1 fav), Hailee, Charlize, Selena, Kristin Wiig, and Rihanna. Besides Karolina, all had a few issues with their dresses but I liked it way more than the other meh stuff I saw on the red carpet.

  • BluesD

Her head looks divine but the dress is overworked. The peplum is too much, though I’m on the fence about the slit in the skirt.

  • quiltrx

I only like it from the shoulders up.
You’d think a glamour girl (supposedly) like her would really go for the theme. Mr. James did not do “I forgot my pants or slip” looks.

  • IngerMereteH

New dress code: Formal Sunday Breakfast.

  • mdcoon127

    love it

  • Belvane

Stunning and chic. Her face looks so beautiful without all that hair.

  • Froggae

I feel like this look is her way of letting us know the Beygency thing is… kind of real.

  • Call me Bee

Not a big Bey Fan, but she looks smokin’ here. Her beautiful head almost makes you not notice that the outfit is cut down to there and up to there. Had she not bee so perfectly styled, she’d look positively trampy.

  • NJBK

Not working for me – my first thought was Sunset Boulevard???

  • withbreaththatisbated

*yawn* I do not get the Beyonce love. At all.

  • Man Dala

I don’t like her makeup (or overall head for that matter). She looks like Lorde.

  • Sunraya

I think she looks horrible. And you can see underbutt in the back. No one is fabulous enough to show under it in a gown. No, Bey, we don’t want to see your ass.

I’d give her more slack if she could actually sing, rather than lip sync all the time. She is pretty, but that’s about it. And she has tacky, classless horrible taste. She makes me cranky.

  • Fraggle

    I can’t agree. I’m not into see through skirts. And… no, I just think it’s tacky. Maybe I don’t get it… it’s horrible.

  • Dagney

hmmm…still kinda reeling from the most powerful woman posing in her underpants as way to…? inspire young girls to be naked? because we…apparently…need to encourage young girls to be naked more…? Though, stunning. so, IN.

  • Lorena T. Gardner

Glad I’m not the only one who hated it. i just get really disappointed when major celebs don’t follow the theme of the Met Gala. Fierce but NOT a ball gown.

  • Lisalady161

She loses my vote at the waistline of the dress. I think that sheer skirt is just awful.

  • LadyVimes

I love the back, but I’m….reluctant on the front. As in I don’t like it.

  • Trickytrisha

Her head is great and classy. Waist to neck is okay. Waist down is tacky.

  • Jecca2244

    was not a fan.

  • SouthernGirlRena

I gotta say I hate it too. I keep looking at it thining “are they really sure it’s Bey?” The only thing I don’t hate are the earrings. Those I love.

  • Kelly

This is a WERQ? I don’t think there’s any amount of fierce in the universe that can save this outfit. She’s ready for her close-up, Mr. DeMille (because everything below the neck is just sad).

  • FRC.

    So fierce I can’t vowel.

  • Mrs. O

I’m not a Beyonce fan, but I think she looks fabulous here. Head to toe. The dress is a poise-killer, but she looks perfectly comfortable. Surely, no one expects her to look tasteful…right? After all, she performs in costumes that would make a hooker blush. She’s married to a mobster wanna-be. She exemplifies a self-indulgent lifestyle of nothing but obscene excess. So, really, is any sane person holding her up as a role model for young women? She looks sexy and predatory and she owns that outfit. Wow.

  • malarson2

That is right! Bey Bey Beyond Fashion in tha house. God that woman. If everyone had her self-possession the world, if not just this event, would be a better place.

  • Fuchsiaforever

I think this is great! WERQ! Love the skirt from the back.

  • wisdomy

I admire her commitment. Having that netting over my eyes might drive me actually round-the-bend crazy.

  • kategs

The skirt fluffers had their work cut out for them. She looks stunning.

  • MartyBellerMask

  • demidaemon

  • Ginmaru

I bet she was seeing spots before her eyes even this morning.

  • Ghost of Ike Turner

I can appreciate it if only for the fact its not another “Bey in gold” look

  • webslice33

umm not even liking the outfit…

  • Really, guys? Can kind of deal with the hair, but the makeup’s too harsh for her, the little hairnet thing looks silly, the top makes her looks bigger and shapeless, and I’m seriously sick of seeing lady backsides. Out, for me.

  • unbornfawn

    She doesn’t look like herself.

  • JynxTheCat

    not in love.

  • bringbackbeatles

    Absolutely drop dead gorgeous!
