Lizzy Caplan in Roksanda Ilincic at “Masters of Sex” Special Screening

Posted on April 30, 2014

Lizzy, you get all the credit in the world for choosing to wear something a little bit different.

Unfortunately, it also looks a little bit like something you’d see on a sign over a bin in a craft store. But even then we can’t hate it, because it’s eye-catching and just a bit on the weird side.  The world of the red carpet is so samey-same all the time that we feel obligated to applaud the occasional trip down the less-trod path, so to speak. Besides, it’s the perfect “I don’t like to be hugged” outfit.  Also: your makeup looks great. Not too keen on the flat hair or the tricky shoes, though.

There. You’ve been assessed. Off you go.

I’m gonna go off the beaten path and say I love this. That dress just looks good on her. Love the shoes in theory but there’s something off.

  • Awww! That’s such a sweet way to approach someone wearing a horrible dress!

  • Janet B

    Interesting dress
I want to pull it up a few inches

    • kimmeister

The waist doesn’t look like it’s anywhere near her anatomical waist.

  • imspinningaround

I want to give it one good shimmy/yank upwards, then it will be perfect. Her eyebrows are wonderful, too.

  • Kate Andrews

The length on her is a big improvement from the runway length. I do think the design on the skirt should extend to the back. That part looks odd to me.

    • TropiCarla

I’d just like an entire dress in that print on the front of the skirt. I’d wear it every day when we’re writing the chapters on Geometry. 😀

  • Constant Reader

I think the dress has potential, but the flat, wet-looking hair makes it a little fancy-beach-towel-adjacent. Do something better with the hair, something better with the shoes, and hoik the dress up about and inch and a half and we’d have something.

  • BlairBear

I’m impressed that dress manages to be interesting without being tortured, ugly, or unflattering. We should send this dress to Raf so for guidance

  • @Biting Panda

It’s cute. The pin straight hair is a real disconnect, though. She needed something softer and with a little volume to it. A delicate necklace would have been nice here as well. Also, I love a full brow, but she’s edging into Marx Brothers territory, here. Nothing to hate on, but a little smartening up could have elevated the whole look.

    • ktr33

disagree about the delicate necklace since it’s kind of a bold and dress, but some earrings are definitely called for. A dangle.

      • @Biting Panda

  • carnush

    Love it.

  • amanda siegelson

well, i for one, love her hair/make-up. think the dress is 100% better at that length, but could probably do with being just a couple of inches shorter… and don’t hate the shoes but don’t love them either.
overall – a giant win for me! you go girl!

    • Kent Roby

I agree that the simple clean hair (and lack of big jewelry) keep this tricky dress from being too “precious”.

      • amanda siegelson

kent – i missed seeing the report on what you and adam wore yesterday for your walk… what happened???? i mean, i know what adam wore (thank you so much for the info)… i think you should fire your publicist immediately. 🙂

        • Kent Roby

The paps apparently weren’t impressed by my H&M t, vintage shorts, and Coach watch. I called Reese in tears, begging for her expert advice.

  • alyce1213

Interesting yes, but not quite there. Even shorter, to the top of the knee, would have been better, more fun — the black bottom weighs it down.

  • Capt. Renault

My imaginary girlfriend looks pretty happy in it, and when my imaginary girlfriend is happy, I’m happy for her.

  • Kent Roby

I really like this! She somehow manages to look cute and fresh in a really-tricky dress. I’m thankful she didn’t clutter it up with jewelry or fussy hair.

  • MilaXX

I like this but you can’t put on this dress and wear hair and shoes that flat and bland.

  • Anna

Who knew those old grade school art projects I used to give my mom for Mother’s Day had potential as red carpet dresses. I should’ve saved them.

  • Danielle

    That brow game is STRONG.

  • ashtangajunkie

I think it’s mostly hideous, but her makeup is nice and at least it’s not the standard “pretty pretty princess” red carpet look.

  • Danielle

    Oh, dear.

  • Grumpy Girl

The dress looks fun, and she looks pleased. I just wish the shoes echoed the “fun” idea. This was a great time to get aware with something a little less “everyone wears them” than the many-inch heel. A lower heel with some interest would have been cool. The hair–that is what my hair does left to its own devices. It is not a “do.” So the hair needs a rethink. But overall, I like this much more on her than the model–and I do like it on her.

  • JP

I like her look much better than the runway look. Good call to shorten it.

  • Gatto Nero

Though I applaud her for taking a risk, I can’t quite get my head around this design. The bodice in quadrants, the odd proportions.
Her makeup looks nice. Not liking the severely flat-ironed hair.

  • Natalie Lane

Judging Lizzy is the perfect way to celebrate this holiest of days. Happy 10 year anniversary, Mean Girls! Love the dress and makeup. As for the dreadful shoes? “Get in loser. We’re going shopping.”

  • megawatt

Except for my closest friends and family, I really hate to be hugged. I should start investing in outfits like this.

  • mmebam

I bet the undersides of her arms were NOT having it…

  • Bexxx

Happy 10 year mean girls anniversary everyone! She will forever be Janis Ian to me. That said I actually really love the dress, it’s very unique. I’m not too crazy about the volume in the bodice but I like the hem length. She needs way more volume in her hair. That is Her Face.

  • suzq

I never say this…..IT’S TOO SHORT!!!! Look at it on the runway. It’s tea length. Bad…really bad with those shoes. What is that? Post modern irony or something hip that I don’t understand? Lizzie can’t be that tall, can she? Even so, at that shorter length, it’s just a dress and not a statement. Also something I never say–the skirt could have used a sheer underlay to give it more contrast with the plastic top.
And can I say that I’m not fond of the half-dress trend? Embellish just one side? Are you now becoming so cheap with the most expensive dresses produced in the world that you only embellish one side? All that…I’m glad she wore it.

    • ktr33

Agree — pattern should extend all the way round. Cheap-looking otherwise, didn’t notice that at first.

    • FibonacciSequins

I’m also not fond of the embellishment on only the front half of a dress. Looks SO cheap.

  • Froggae

    Project Runway unconventional materials challenge.

    • Qitkat

You beat me to it, but I think it’s a damn sight better than anything that’s come out of those challenges in some years.

  • Gimmicks rule the Red Carpet!

  • SarahVN

Mostly she looks so pleased with herself that I can’t help but love this.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I like this particularly because it is so odd. The skirt if beautiful and interesting.

  • ktr33

I LOVE the skirt or skirt-part-of-dress, top is, I agree with TLo, kind of craft-bead-project, and the shoes are great. Love a good ankle strap. I can’t even remember who she is, but she looks cooler than your average starlet.

  • cocohall

The textiles are fantastic. But it feels like they want to be deployed differently (and perhaps not together). I don’t get the strapless look with the prim skirt length, and then the heavy make-up and Wednesday from The Munsters hair. And the delicate shoe. All the elements are bickering with each other. Outfits should sing, or shout “I’m shutting it down.” There should not be audible kvetching.

  • Kitten Mittons

The bodice is not so great. I like the skirt quite a bit, and I wish the whole dress just looked like that.

Instead, it looks like she’s carrying her boobs around in a little girl’s bicycle basket. Are these fake, plastic-looking flowers a “thing” now?

    Her arms are killer, though.

  • Mothra

I kind of like it but agree on the straight hair. What I like about the styling on the model is the weird bow or arrow or whatever it is that gives her head some weird horizontal thing going on in the back. Not sure how Lizzie can pull that off but she could have tried for something more interesting.

  • icm

I like the top ,and I like the bottom ,just not together. I know I am getting old as I am starting to not know who some of these young celebs are ….who is she?And I agree with the previous post her top looks like it’s falling off ….yank it up.

    • FibonacciSequins

She’s best known for playing Janis Ian in Mean Girls. I love her because of her Freaks & Geeks turn as Nick’s disco-loving, adoring girlfriend. Right now she’s in Masters of Sex.

      • icm

        thanks for the info .

      • malarson2

        Yes and yes!

  • Imasewsure

Kind of dig the longer version of the dress… not loving but also not hating Lizzie’s take on it but I really don’t like the hair at all

  • FibonacciSequins

I feel the same, especially regarding her slicked-down hair. She’s really pretty and that hairstyle does nothing for her. I also don’t like the colors in that dress against her skin tone. Very unflattering.

  • decormaven

The dress rides a bit low in the chest area. Better fitted, I think it would do fine. Earrings would be appreciated- that pin straight hair needs a little drama.

  • LadyVimes

That…is a horrible dress. It has no redeeming factors.

  • Jeremy Thomas Porta

And these are the greatest people you will ever meet!

  • quiltrx

I REALLY like the skirt portion, though I’m highly annoyed that they pussed out and didn’t carry the design all the way around.
She definitely needed to do something more with her hair if she’s going to wear a bodice that busy.

  • marlie

I want to like it, but I’m too tired to list all of the pros. The cons outweigh them anyway, so, nope, sorry Lizzy.

  • demidaemon

The skirt isn’t so bad, but I can’t help that the bodice is either a four year old’s craft project or that it had hot glue sprayed on it before it accidentallyfell into a bin of plastic flowers at Michael’s.

  • enchanted216

I think the dress is double cute! To borrow a phrase from True Blood! 😉

  • par3182

She should have gone full on Janis Ian to celebrate the ten year anniversary of ‘Mean Girls’.

  • Jacob Bowen

Girl your makeup is SICK’NING! Also, I think the bust is AWESOME, so I wish the skirt was more plain.

  • formerlyAnon

I think it’s ugly. It might be better if the sliding-down-bedazzled-sundress top didn’t look so much like a bedazzled and slipping down sundress.

  • Dear Lizzie’s Makeup Artist – Please come by and make me look this stunning. Signed, Delusional but Impressed.

  • livesarah

I can see Rashida Jones in this one. I like it.

  • MissFern

I’m imagining that same dress (which I love) with a big bun on the top of her head instead of the flat hair.

  • melanie0866

Props to her for shortening it, too. The runway length would never have worked, But it’s fun!

    Hate the hair.

  • EEKstl

Maybe I’m nuts but I LOVE this dress, and smart to go shorter. Hair isn’t freaking me out, but I’m sure not getting those shoes.

  • KT

I’m having some serious skin envy — what moisturizer are you using, girl?? The dress is certainly interesting, and I like the colors, but I agree that it’s not totally coming together for me, though. Good try though! And I kinda like the shoes.

  • sagecreek

Oh, I’m charmed by that dress!

    Not by the hair, though.

  • Kelly

I like the weird crafty dress (though the top and bottom don’t quite seem to work together). Hate the hair.

  • Madu

Without a doubt a project runway’s inconvencional materials challenge dress…

  • JynxTheCat

Zipster, Candy Bra? Anyone. Okay just me.
