IN or OUT: Shailene Woodley in Balmain at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards

Posted on April 14, 2014

We’re torn. On the one hand, we can’t fault her for not putting effort in or not taking an active role in her styling choices. On the other hand, she’s wearing this:

Shailene-Woodley-Balmain-MTV-Movie-Awards-2014-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Shailene Woodley attends the 2014 MTV Movie Awards at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Balmain ensemble paired with Balmain sandals and David Yurman jewelry.

Shailene-Woodley-Balmain-MTV-Movie-Awards-2014-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (6)We want to applaud this, but the best we can do is applaud the effort. The outcome is pretty dicey. There’s no way any mere mortal could make a knotted leather top work for them. Not a snowball’s chance in hell. The fact that it’s not totally disastrous is a testament to what this girl could pull off, if she flexed her style muscles a little more often. She can wear tricky stuff. She just can’t pull off this top. We thought the skirt was working for her, but it does kind of look like a cheerleader skirt on her proportions. Then there’s the baby spew (to quote Edina Monsoon) color, which is only going to look good on roughly one out of a hundred million girls (estimated).

Still, the whole look has some style and attitude to it. It took some thinking and boldness to step out in this. We don’t want to discourage the poor dear. Be gentle, kittens.

Or who knows? Maybe you all want to defend this. Go for it.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! I love it and you’re wrong.

OUT! I hate it and you’re right, like you always are, T Lo. God, you guys are smart.

In other witchy, judgmental news, the kittens decided that Kristen Wiig’s ULTRA-tricky dress wasn’t working and voted it OUT.

OUT. If it was not made of leather I would maybe entertain it, but the leather and color together do not work AT ALL.

    • largishbearishAtlish

If that is leather…what animal comes in that color? The spew-moose of the Andes?

      • demidaemon

Obviously, it’s from a dead poop dragon.

  • PeggyOC

Out. Effort should not be rewarded when it runs full speed down fugly street.

    • Judih1

  • hughman

She volunteers at a charity car wash to raise money for Gladiator School.

  • Noah

I actually think this would look pretty good were it not for the weird leather knot.

  • TrixieConQueso

Serving up Barfed Up-Baby Peas is not on my Style Menu. I’d like to send this back please.

  • Carleenml

It looks very ComicCon to me.

    • Rhonda Shore

It does but that color…not salvageable.

  • somebody blonde

In. It’s mostly good, and at least it’s consistently styled.

  • Anna

From the waist down, all I see is shower curtain rod and hooks.

  • Kelly

Hahaha! It’s like the Naugahyde sofa from my grandparents’ 1960s rec room has come to life. Come to think of it, that would make a fun movie: furniture morphs into humans! Out. But nice try, Shailene.

  • Synnae

I do give it an OUT but for the exact opposite reason. I like the top – I hate the gladiator-esque skirt. If that were a simple pencil skirt (in the same leather) I’d love this. But now, too busy.

  • Grumpy Girl

Almost in? One foot in? For me part of the problem is the dissonance between her body language and the dress. She seems to be trying to smile demurely and look ladylike . . . and that dress calls for Bam! Look at me, Bitches, attitude.

The color, although I hate it, really plays up her eyes. I still can’t help but think if she had played up the quirkiness a little more with a sassier hair do and better posing, this would be cool.

    • MissAmynae

Agreed. This needed Emma Watson-level ‘tude. The “i know its edgy, but i make it look Good.”

  • luludexter

Out. There is nothing redeeming about this look.

  • B_C_J

OUT! Cheerleader skirt paired with a tortured leathered top – no way!

  • Sarah

    OUT. That color is HEINOUS.

    • wisenhar

Agreed. OUT based on color alone.

  • ojosazules

She’s wearing macrame boot sandals and a leather roman legion outfit the color of poop (excuse me). And she doesn’t look completely ridiculous. I am very impressed. IN.

    • What blue eyes here said……I also vote IN.

  • sienna elm

I love the top! Don’t much like the skirt though. Don’t really want to vote it out, but can’t vote it in…so – out.

  • Jangle57

I saw this on another site and thought: yuck. Not thinking anything different here. OUT

  • ChiKat67

Considering some of the “outfits” she’s worn in public, ON PURPOSE, when she knew she’d be photographed, I can’t hate. I also have to vote it OUT, but at least it looks like she tried.

  • Little_Olive

Xena: the office years. Here shown in olive. Comes also in taupe, black, navy, winterberry.

  • Imasewsure

Gotta go OUT because it’s just not working in leather at all. Maybe a chiffon-y gladiatrix look could have been made out of this more successfully? On the plus side her hair and makeup are beautiful although a little mature for MTV

  • Mikki Anderson

Looks like someone was shopping at Xena, The Warrior Princesses’ garage sale. Should have sprung for the sword too, it makes the outfit. OUT!!!!

  • Ooo…yeah. It’s a good effort, and it’s very head-turning…but that color needs to be burned with fire.

  • rissa42210

IN. She’s got a look, and I happen to think that the structure of it all is working. It’s very cheerleader of the gladiators. It’s not a look I’d ever choose, but it’s a look and it’s working for me on her.

  • Katherine Anthony

At least she’s wearing makeup and has product in her hair? The outfit is OUT though.

  • @Biting Panda

In. I don’t love it, but she’s done nearly everything we’ve asked of her.

  • Patrick Cleary

If the top was not knotted like that, it might work? The color is kind of wonderful on her, and a “leather cheerleading costume” is kind of kick-ass.

  • Kbear

    Caesars Palace cocktail waitress. OUT

  • Imasewsure

Looking at it again, I think the top and waist are actually ok and could have been saved with a long flowing skirt or better yet, some palazzo pants a la Hepburn or Claudette Colbert…. even that look requires Blanchett though…. our girl here doesn’t have the chops (or the skirt or shoes) for it unfortunately. OUT again…

  • Julie Chase

Out. It’s just plain ugly and the color is appalling.

  • SBG

Oy vey, I really like her. She’s just a lost hippie in hollywood who need some help from a stylist who has her best interest in mind. OUT.

  • Stacey Summerville

  • IN. It’s super weird but there’s something about the whole look that I just love. It almost looks like a superhero costume. The knot is maybe a little much, but I do love the lines of the outfit and I think she’s working it. It’s probably the first look of hers that I’ve really liked. The color is unusual and great.

  • She’ll get there (I hope). She’s tall and willowy, has tons of personality, and she has a face that’s attractive but a little bit unconventional. It’s the right ingredients for a future Blanchett: she just needs the years, the experience, and some really talented gays to put her on the right track.

    This is not that track.

  • Cyprienne Zed

OUT, except for her headsuit. The girl just provokes me to comment.

  • Capt. Renault

In. Which isn’t to say that I don’t personally find it revolting.

  • Hetha Innis

A knotted top will never not look redneck to me. Redneck gladiator vomit.

  • ovarB

Perhaps if she wasn’t wearing school bus seat vinyl, I could get behind this ensemble. But since she is….OUT!!

  • Nancer

Torn, so torn. I like much of this, but it’s a tricky look. I know, who would think I would consider defending a baby poop colored, long sleeved, leather twisted, belly baring top? Ahh….. I think I can’t. Though there is definitely potential here, it just is too much. So I have to say OUT. And yet I feel bad about doing so.

  • BobStPaul

Out. I couldn’t believe this was praised so highly in other outlets though I do recognize the effort she finally put into an appearance.

  • StillGary

The Zena Diaries! (She’s cute, I’m giving it an in.)

  • BlairBear

I want to like it more than I do. I would definitely get rid of the top. But I think the skirt sits too high and isn’t exactly flattering. But tons of credit for putting the effort in and looking striking even if the details don’t really work

  • Kaytee

Out, it does look like the rec room furniture found in my high school boyfriend’s rec room (I did graduate in the 70’s), but I will give her an A for effort, however it is still Out

    • decormaven

      Like minds- LOL!

  • decormaven

Bless, she tried, but I can’t give a thumbs up for a garment made from 70’s couch upholstery. Out.

    • Kaytee

    • zenobar

One wonders just how many naugas had to die for this ensemble.

  • Christina

Out. The color is horrible and I feel like she must be sweating bullets in this all leather outfit thing. From the neck up she looks great though!

  • Nicole

Out, because it’s ugly on another level of ugly. Blarg.

  • MartyBellerMask

Kind of ugly, yet…. there’s something about it. I’m thinking if Jennifer Connelly was wearing it, I’d be loving it a bit more. Still– I don’t know, I kind of like it.

Going out on a limb here. IN.

  • crash1212

OUT. And can’t they find anything else to do with that hair? Jesus. Either get a new stylist or grow that shit out.

  • Carrie

Out. It’s effort, but that color is so wrong on her that even if the outfit was perfection it’d still be a no go.

  • Pennymac

OUT. But caveat: when I wear baby spew green my eyes take on a shade of green that almost makes it look like I’m wearing green contacts. I prefer an almost army shade of green occasionally for that reason alone. However, leather gladiator cheerleader midriff bearing baby spew is too much.

  • Janet B

Once owned a 1972 Mercury station wagon with the same ‘leather’.

  • YoungSally

Should have saved it for JLaw’s next Hunger Games flick.

  • SophieCollier

Her arms! Oh wait. I mean, “Her aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmsssssss.” Seriously, they look hilariously long. I like it better with the outrageous belt. I mean, why try to tone this down? Gonna wear a knotted pea green leather set? Go bold!

  • ModernDowager

IN. I think it’s it’s fun and she looks like she’s having fun in it. And I dig the shoes and belts.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

at least shes trying to tell a story, a olive leather glad roman warrior story…but its something…Im giving her an IN…

  • alyce1213

Out, but at least it’s leather, not plastic. Props for trying something, though.

  • sweetestsith

Out. Save the sexy-gladiator costumes for Halloween! The dress might be salvagable, but not with that hair/makeup/pose. Or questionable shoes.

  • Judy_S

That color is not baby spew, Uncles. It’s what my husband liked to call “banana turds,” produced by a breast-fed baby. One can feel quite sentimental about that color. She does manage to look both MTV and high fashion, which is a difficult one to pull off.

  • bunnydiet

This ugly on both: the model and the actress!

  • BuffaloBarbara

Can’t get past the baby spew color. Ick. If it weren’t leather (and that color), It could be doable.

  • suzq

Tights would have been a better choice with this outfit. It must have been ferociously hot to wear.

  • Emily Smith

Out. So much boob sweat and I could not hate this color more.

  • Crystal

I mean. The color isn’t great but it makes her eyes look nice. And she doesn’t look like she just stepped over to the red carpet while taking a break from fertilizing her marijuana garden. The construction is weird but I actually think she looks cool.

She’s wearing mascara. I feel like I have to give it to her for that alone lol

  • Dharmabum8

I hate the color, but it does have an interesting Gladiator cosplay kinda vibe that I dig.

  • Stella Zawistowski

Mmmph, no. Gladiator on the bottom and…’80s Madonna? on top? And all in leather? OUT.

  • SuzyQuzey

    No. Pea soup gladiator leather.

  • Shawn EH

You’re wrong, love it, awesome in! Think of where she was. So maybe she forgot which young adult literary movie franchise she was involved in for a second, and stole one of Katniss’ gladiator gowns, but she’s working it!

  • conniemd

Out for all the reasons stated by TLo

  • Lilithcat

  • boweryboy

This girl. Sheesh. It would have been better if she kept the leopard print belt. Big fat OUT.

  • Coleen

In. I think she looks suprisingly fantastic.

  • Myra Amler

Out based on color and the fit of the top.

  • GeoDiva

    Out on the color alone.

  • Monabel

I like that color, in velvet.

  • DoctorBelle

Out with the baby vomit color!

  • littlestars

I guess I’m in the minority, but I think she looks great. I love the color for her, and I think she’s totally pulling the look off. So: IN…though I wish she’d get rid of the mom hair.

  • JauntyJohn

The more I looked at it, the more it grew on me — though that may be an allusion to the color, which is indeed a shade of something one might find growing either on a rock or under it…
Bitchery aside, I think she’s making it work. I’m not sure I like it all that much, but regardless of where you land on the question, I’ve gotta give it to her: The first RC pics on here of her were practically examples of what one wears to run laundry in from the car. She’s putting the effort in and is not afraid to be a little out there.

  • V No Privacy

This can’t possibly be real leather. Isn’t she all crunchy granola don’t harm mother nature’s creatures?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

In. I like it, but you’re not wrong, it’s a dicey dress for sure.

  • Laura Abrahamsen

I hate the color for me, but it looks really good on her. It brings out the undertones in both her hair and her eyes. I also think she looks pretty good in the shape, and the whole look is so much better than the cutoffs and tank of a few weeks back. IN for me.

  • KinoEye

I gagged when I saw this. A for effort, but OUT OUT OUT.

  • Mousentrude

Really not sure. At least it’s interesting, and for that I applaud her. I really rather like the skirt and would be wholeheartedly behind it if it wasn’t showing midriff (that patch of bare skin just looks weird), had the model’s collar (it looks a tad unfinished), and was in a slightly less pukier shade. So… out.

  • Danielle

Venue appropriate, but damn is it ugly.

  • Trickytrisha

OUT. Way out. For the barf green color, for the weird way the skirt is halfway to her hoo hah, but looks long enough to nearly be knee length, for the “grandma crocheted me some shoes”, for that hideous top, and most of all for the pained pursed lip “smile”.

  • amanda siegelson

i think the fact that all i can do is look at the shoes in defiant admiration (ie, lust) says the dress is a no go… so out. but i LOVE the shoes.

  • marlie

IN. I really like this. A lot. Shailene’s not totally “owning” this look, but it still suits her. The shoes should be set on fire, and she needs way more than “sweet and casual” makeup.

  • golden_valley

Compare this with that get up Victoria Justice is wearing…Shailene’s people did much better by her than Victoria’s did.

I think Shailene gets an IN thought the model’s belt would have made it better.

  • KayEmWhy

Although I’m not a fan of animal prints I think it looks better on the model because of the necklace and belt giving a nod to Africa. Maybe Lupita could have pulled this off with better styling. So it’s out for me.

  • Wink

    Too Zena Warrior Princess.

  • OUT- you’re right, like you always are, T Lo. God, you guys are smart.

  • sk8tfan

Russell Crowe called. He’s been looking for his old Gladiator costume and is mad someone stole it from his garage, where he was storing it until he could sell it on Ebay.

  • Brent D. Stump

My first car was a 1979 Pontiac Sunbird. I’m pretty sure that is made out of its backseat.

  • kategs

I think she is pulling this off big time. But then I generally love her choices because she does her own thing and pays absolutely no attention to the yippers out there. so a very big IN from me!

  • Sophie

Out. But I wish she had worn the necklace the model is wearing, it might have made everything better.

  • &theJets

Out. The shoes make me think of macrame plant hangers.

  • Miss Ruth

OUT. Cadillac upholstery texture + 1970s appliance color. Don’t put metal in the science oven.

  • Jacob Bowen

I actually like the color with her hair and skin tone, but I hate the knotted top and AWFUL shoes…those are seriously a case of “Pinterest Shoes”. We’ve gone from hair and nails to now making our own macrame sandals. GOD AWFUL. I am SO glad that she changed the belt, because the LAST thing this dress needed was an animal print belt!

  • IN. Ish.

The color is gross, but I guess it sort of fits with the dystopia/postapocalyptica of Divergent? It’s a stretch, but she actually looks comfortable and interesting in it. Despite the knotted leather.

  • Tricia

That whole thing’s hideous, even the shoes. OUT.

  • OUT. That belt on the model helped break out the “Scarlett O’Hara vs. the waiting room couch in Dr. Arnetto’s dentistry” look. Also, this is the MTv Movie Awards – you’re allowed to be as American tacky as you want. This is Canadian tacky…the kind your grandmother thinks is bold.

Minor, “Baby Puke Disco” would be the name of my punk club in a heartbeat.

  • TigerLaverada

LOL at the ‘no’ quote. Didn’t I just read that somewhere else?

The color (which in my fam is called “merde l’enfant”) is heinous, of course. And it’s got all the other problems listed. But she doesn’t look awful somehow. OUT, I guess, but not by much.

  • IN. It’s only the color that bothers me. Aside from that she is rockin’.

  • sagecreek

    Oh, in. Esp on her.

  • UGLY and OUT!

  • Donna Tabor

She’s a cheerleader for the gladiators!

  • hmatz

IN. Honestly, I hate this look. I think it’s all very gladiator and I really dislike the color; however, it has some style to it, and she seems happy with how she looks. For that, she deserves the in. Attagirl.

  • dash1211

In, but only because of the venue.

  • kimmeister

IN. I think it’s actually kind of awesome. Just not the shoes.

  • TheLaurenJean

in? I think if someone messed with her lacquered hair, it would make it loads better.

  • LeelaST

OUT. I actually don’t mind the outfit (bare midriff aside) but with those shoes it just screams GLADIATOR GIRL.

  • KT

    Dear god. NO!!!!!

  • lalahartma

    OUT out out

  • Jecca2244

i really like this. I think she’s making it work.

  • nannypoo

Baby spew is actually one of my favorite colors, but this outfit is pretty bad.

  • schadenfreudelicious

OUT, my mother once owned a hideous naugahyde tufted ottoman in this colour…

  • AmeliaEve

    Out – Naugahyde gladiatrix

  • NinjaCate

IN. She’s even wearing makeup! Let’s not discourage her.

  • Chameleon

In. I think she really makes it work in her own way. Not feeling that color AT. ALL. But think the shape and design are just good enough for it to be an In.

  • Bethany Roullett

    OUT Bad bad color. Shudder.

  • MilaXX

OUT! I think it’s Not her Dress, but if she was to make it work it needs the belt detail and a better shoe. Instead she needs to pack this up and send it to JLo. This is diva wear.

  • BookManFilm

There are no words to adequately describe this. None.

  • BrooklynBomber

Yikes. One of the most poorly-conceived outfits I’ve ever seen.

  • julnyes

OUT. The color is gross and that top requires PHD Level skills she is seriously lacking.

  • Alex Palombo

She’s made an effort. She’s not wearing a nightgown or jorts. Her head looks great. Unpopular opinion, but I’m voting this an IN, if only to encourage her.

  • I don’t want to know what you have to do to leather to dye it baby poop green.

  • Lorelei_D

    OUT, sorry.

  • Harry

IN, I’m glad she left the belt a solid color, the shoes I am unsure of, but she’s made more simpler articles of clothing look worse, so I’m okay with this

  • uprightcitizen

I kind of like it for its “Bladerunner” futuristic/robot vibe. And I’m always going to be the odd one out on liking any shade of olive (love them), but this one does go a little Linda Blair in some light (as evidenced by how much different it looks from one photo to another).

  • Camille Chapman

In!!! I like it, the green, a hard color to wear looks great on her. I wish she would have kept the animal print on the belt.

  • DeniseSchipani

OMG I think someone made a dress out of our old ottoman from 1978!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

It’s unique, bold, costume-y. And that’s why I like it. In.

  • largishbearishAtlish

I clicked passed this (was going to watch, then realized I had no idea who most of these folks are (or were)…but saw this and immediately wondered ‘I wonder what T’lo is thinking of this’…)
-I did not see the midriff bare…I think that *really* screws this up…but…its so gladiator/costume.. what about this in tin? that “might” work…(The Flintstones go to Rome?) Out.

  • Esz

Out. It makes her look chunky and she is NOT chunky. Ugh.

  • CT14

the color is horrible and the top is doing hideous things with her bosom.

  • what not

IN. I don’t love everything about it, but she looks like a super hero on her day off, and that’s awesome.

  • demidaemon

Well, her head is very pretty. Kudos. But she basically shunted herself of the stage by picking this dress. It’s hideous. In another color, with another bodice, maybe. But as is, it is most definitely OUT.

  • Donald Hite

IDK. I actually think she’s selling the garment. I don’t like the hardware/belt on the skirt though.

Also, side note, I wish she would lose that persnickety smirk in every picture. In the first pic where she is smiling and showing some teeth, her face looks beautiful. The pursed lip thing gives off an “I think I’m the shit vibe” that is kind of off putting IMHO

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

    Out…good grief.

  • siriuslover

I think she looks like she’s backwards, but she’s doing a good job with the attire. I give her a “just this side of in.”

  • LaSylphide

  • DominoEstella

She looks better than the model but she must have been sweating buckets.. there is no way she was comfortable in this. She’s got a gorgeous body though.

  • kt

In, a model body and bearing cover a multitude of sins.

  • MaggieMae

Hate the color. Barely, barely an IN. But, I’m doing the happy dance because I actually guessed BALMAIN before confirming it in the caption. It’s like reaching a new beginner’s level in BK-dom. Woo!

  • Amel

The top looks like a tied-off version of one of those lead aprons you get before the doctor takes an x-ray. Skirt & sandals = awkwardly proportioned gladiator outfit. Sorry, I know she tried, but this one’s OUT.

  • lunchcoma

OUT. You know, if she really didn’t want to think about her style (and I don’t think she does), she could just hire someone to pick things out for her. She’s young, tall, fit, and conventionally attractive. Some women who are harder to dress absolutely need to provide guidance to a stylist, but I think Shailene would look at least acceptable if she completely outsourced it.

  • hillmad

Are you not entertained? Sorry, all I can think of is Gladiator!

    • quiltrx

      You and I both!!

  • quiltrx

OUT. I’m a sucker for a good Balmain, but this is the complete opposite of that! The color is dreadful (do they still make “Mudd” mask for oily skin? It was EXACTLY this color in the 80s). And waist-down, Maximus wants his outfit back.
And…I know I say this every time…BUT CAN THE CENTER-SEAMED TOP/BODICE BE OVER ALREADY???

  • In. I don’t *like* any particular part of it except her hair…but she’s making it work.

  • I’m actually going to go with IN. It is perfect for the character in the movie she’s currently poledancing to promote, it’s a giant step in the right direction in terms of effort, and while the color may be hard for many to pull off it does great things for her eyes and hair while hinting at her “earth mama” personality. The makeup is light but present and reasonably polished, and the shoes could be better but aren’t totally terrible. She needed a strong shoe to stand up to this look, I only wish they weren’t so baggy around her, very slender, ankles.

  • Julie Ree

Lacroix. Baby spew. One of the best abfab quotes ever.

  • nickie

IN! I think it looks pretty sharp despite it being a knotted leather top. And don’t kill me, but i’m kinda liking the shoes too.

  • elemspbee

Out. Although she’s almost pulling it off like the outfit is not made of leather. That should already say something about the outfit–it can only be acceptable if one is to make it look as if it is something else. But really, the frackin’s shoes.Make me mad!

  • butterflysunita

IN because she looks beautiful and if you’re going to wear a weird outfit this is the right venue. I give it a pass.

  • mjmiller77

UGH! that means out. Nothing good here.

  • MannahattaMamma

    gladiator horror

  • BabsinMD

I really don’t have much of an opinion (OK, I really don’t like it at all) but it just makes me so happy that you guys quote Absolutely Fabulous on a regular basis. I just love that show.

  • Celticharpist

In. A for effort and B- for execution averages this at about a B. So not spectacular, but passing.

  • Qitkat

Mr Q has declared that he likes this; I’m not sure he’s right (for some reason, I think she’s about to go roller skating) but I’ll pass my vote to him this time.

  • Clash D

Superhero couture. I’m half expecting her to raise her fists and fly out of there.

  • SorayaS

Out. That colour is foul and the idea of knotted leather is ridiculous. The silhouette would have totally worked for her, I like the pleats and the knots but it’s such a stupid quirk to do it in leather where it just looks heavy and terrible.

  • kmk05

OUT. This is terrible!Xena. Also, the face and hair are all wrong for the outfit, although I can’t for the life of me figure out what would work.

  • ScarlettHarlot

OUT. A for effort, C- for execution.

  • holla

OUT. She could make this work if she had some more jewelry a less matchy belt (a la the model). The earrings makes her look 20 yrs older.

  • StarburstLady

I like it! I think the color works on her. And I think it’s paired with the perfect shoes.

  • Laylalola

Out. With one caveat: She’s not on my irrational hate list, but the views may still be that of a supreme jerk as I’ve come to realize I’m immune to her charms generally.

  • Amber J

Out. The skirt I could forgive if she had paired it with a different top and less ugly shoes. That top,’s just not good. On anyone.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out. There is nothing that is good about it.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. Please tell me that “gladiator cheerleader” is not a thing.

  • gsk241

Gladiatrix! Just the fact that this is up for debate is a step in the right direction. IN for effort.

  • girlsaturday

Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope.

That color only looks good on one out of a million billion people. The world’s population is just not advanced enough for Shailene (or anybody) to be wearing that outfit.

…Okay, amendment: Make it a less awful color and I bet Lupita could work it pretty damn well – she has the poise and general fashionosity to make it happen.

And OUT, in case it wasn’t clear.

  • padma sallah

IN. She’swearing poop coloured leather and knotcraft shoes. And still she looks pretty okay. Now THAT takes some skill.

  • Fräulein K.

Seriously? I love it, baby spew khaki and all (but I love those kinds of colours in general). And she’s kind of working it, surprisingly. In.

  • Sophia Finfer

OUT. That color. I just can’t.

  • Maya

I feel like I could have tried to defend it but for the shoes. So, so out.

  • melanie0866

OUT. Mostly because it looks like an olive green leather Roman soldier’s uniform.

  • The color works for her, oddly enough, but the outfit as a whole is Armed Guard on the Planet of the Amazon Women.

  • Bradio311

Looks like it was made from the upholstery from my dad’s ’70s sedan. I can still smell the second-hand smoke. So… OUT!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

  • LJCdoc

Nope, no interest in defending this. OUT.

  • I actually like the top — just with something completely different waist down. Distressed denim, maybe.

  • judybrowni

OUT: she skinned my dad’s Barcalounger.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

Slow clap for Shailene who is NOT perching her hands on her hips for a change.

  • bladiblah

The top looks like it is the back of the garment, which makes it look like her head is on backwards (the model in the picture as well), which is kind of freaky with the baby puke color. Makes me think of the Exorcist.

  • Reality TV Casting

    ugh out, of course
why is she famous and why to people thing she can act?
    shes the poor man’s jlaw

  • ankali

In. I wouldn’t say I like it exactly, but she’s working it. Kudos to her for heading to the risky labels.

  • yllas

No. It looks very uncomfortable, in a costume-y way, and it does look like upholstery in someone’s old car. Bad color. I was curious, however, to see what kind of makeup one would wear with such a color.

  • Kay Hach

I love that skirt ! I would have worn it with a black top piece but who cares, its Balmain!
