Emma Roberts in Chloé at the “Fool’s Fête” Spring Dance

Posted on April 24, 2014

Here’s another instance of us trying really, really hard to like something. What’s up with that? We’ve been staring at it for 20 minutes, trying to find something nice to say. Sometimes, darlings, we just don’t recognize ourselves anymore.

We need to eat a hearty bowl of Bitcheeos every morning, as part of a healthy breakfast. We’re getting soft.

Emma-Roberts-Fool-Fete-Chloe-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO (1)Emma Roberts attends the New Yorkers For Children’s 11th Anniversary A Fool’s Fête Spring Dance at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City in a Chloé ruffled dress paired with Chloé booties, an Edie Parker clutch, and Pearl Collective jewelry.

She’s one of those gals who, if she asked our advice, we’d say, “Just style it like the look book or the runway. Don’t get cute.” We don’t like this dress because a white sheer over black is never going to look like anything but a mistake to us. It looks like she’s wearing a lobster bib with delusions of grandeur. But she actually made it worse by pairing it with those shoes. They’re too clunky and focus-pulling paired with a dress that’s already demanding quite a bit of your focus. We’d scrap the whole look, but if she feels she must wear the dress, then the standard pump is probably the way to go here.

The top looks like the dress Chloe Sevigny wore when she won the Golden Globe.

Why is that image so easily brought to the surface of my brain?

      • Noah

        Because it ripped. ;)

    • FibonacciSequins

I’m not sure why Emma is striving to look like a pregnant secretary on the red carpet, but her hair and makeup are beautiful.

I might like that blouse if it weren’t paired with a drab A-line skirt.

      • Sarah

        Yes, good headsuit.

      • DaringMiss

I agree. Her makeup is PERFECT. Polished, pretty and photogenic. The three P’s of red carpet makeup.

      • Rhonda Shore

It would be cute w/skinny black jeans.

        • FibonacciSequins

That’s what I was picturing when I thought it was a blouse.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

I was thinking that this might work better as separates, and the top were paired with pants or a pencil skirt. I seem to be fixated on pencil skirts for some reason

          • ampg

I don’t understand the concept behind dresses that are designed to look like separates. More often than not, they just make the observer think of better ways to pair the respective halves, and that seems like not quite the reaction you’d want to inspire with your designs.

            • bitchybitchybitchy

i agree. It’s almost as if the designers have a creative idea for one half of the dress, and then space out.

      • Trent

@Fibonacci, “drab” is the perfect word for this wrinkled schmatte of a dress. It looks like Nana Roberts sewed a bunch of napkins together to cover a stain on one of Emma’s old LBDs. It even looks blah on the model.

And someone PLEASE market Bitcheeos and hire TLo as spokesmodels! I’ll be first in line at Dean and DeLuca…

    • Ginger

      Honest question here, folks:
What is she famous for aside from being Julia Roberts’ niece? Is there some appeal that I’m missing?

Regarding the dress/outfit/whatever – no, just no. That top thingy looks as though it was made from those cheap rental sheers that you throw over tables at a wedding.

      • Sarah

American Horror Story, right now, but lotsa tween movies, too.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I figure I am Not Her Demographic. I saw her in that thing with Jennifer Aniston and she was reasonably endearing but I wouldn’t actually pay to see her headlining anything.

That dress is terrible. I cannot imagine being shown it and thinking “Yes! That’s the one!” or pairing it with those shoes. Good ring though.

        • decormaven

The ring is the only positive feature here.

      • MilaXX

She’s been an actress in her since she was a teen. I get that having a famous aunt & father helped get her jobs at first, but I think she’s earned her keep. If you check her IMDB it’s fairly lengthy.

    • Sarah

I don’t mind it much. I wish the top was an actual grey fabric where it looks grey, because I agree about the sheerness being a misstep. Otherwise, I like shoulder ruffles, and I like the shape of the dress on her, and I even think the shoes are kinda cool (Who am I all of a sudden? I need some of y’all’s Bitcheeos.)

      • Kitten Mittons

I’ll agree to all of this with two caveats:

        1. I cannot handle booties, even these.
        2. I wish for a pair of skinny black pants instead of the black under-dress.

        • demidaemon

Too bad Chloes decided to sew the whole thing together. Not a good choice for pieces that do not complement each other at all.

          • Kitten Mittons

Now we can all chip in and buy a seam ripper for Emma’s birthday.

            • Monabel

Brilliant! We could get a gross of seam rippers, and distribute them widely.

    • sagecreek

I’d love a closer look at those earrings.

      • Alyssa

        Me too, they look amazing!

    • Malibufire

      Designer candy striper.

    • Constant Reader

I like the idea of this dress more than the execution. I think part of the problem is that Emma is tiny (I Googled it: she’s 5’2″) and the dress combined with the heavy shoe accentuates that and makes her look almost childish.

Very pretty hair and makeup, though.

Edited because Disqus is not my friend today.

      • Gatto Nero

Yes, this look does skew juvenile on her.

    • ashtangajunkie

That’s the best hair and makeup I’ve ever seen on her. The compliments end at her neck though.

    • Grumpy Girl

OK, clearly I have had an overpowering bowl of bitchi-os. I think her hair looks awkward–parted too far to the side, with the dominant side hanging limply (maybe if it were all curled more neatly and consistently?)–although the color is nice for once: look ma, not an overpowering aura of roots and grease! Her face looks nice. But the dress is awful and so are the shoes. Doesn’t matter what either gets paired with, as long as no one wears either one.

I like the ring more than anything else. I actually LIKE the ring; unlike anything else.

    • NMMagpie

You lost me at the ruffles.

    • nannypoo

Except for the shoes, and her, I like it.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I can’t with dust ruffle dresses.

    • hughman

That top is like kitchen curtains at The Munsters’ house.

      • mjude

        love your comment

    • Wendy

All I can think of while looking at the top is one of those Pierrot clown costumes.

      Edit: typo

      • ktr33

        me too, exactly!

    • SuzyQuzey

It’s just eh. Not even meh. I like the ring, though.

    • what not

I’ve been seeing this particular ruffled silhouette around lately, and I always think it makes one look like a rectangular picture frame with nothing inside. Why would anyone ever choose that?

    • imspinningaround

Her head is wonderful, and I love dresses that are white with black serging around the edges–they look like living sketches. But this one looks kinda blah.

    • Glam Dixie

The dreaded shoe/boot or shoot (hee!) is never ok.

    • mjude

the model photo the top looks wrinkly to me.
nothing like a good bowl of bitcheo’s

    • Noah

I’m actually okay with this, but that’s because this is Emma Roberts and it’s on a curve.

    • Susan Velazquez

      At she looks clean

    • ktr33

The blouse is a little Pierrot, which is not a good thing.

    • crash1212

I don’t hate the dress. She ruined it with those shoes. I’m not a fan of the white pump, but the shoes on the model really look cute with the dress. I do think that’s the best Emma’s head has looked in quite some time.

    • MightyMarshal

No go. She’s got three different blacks going on and none of them match. The dress might be cute if it were a bright white with a bold color like royal blue or purple, but black and white is a little like a fussy pilgrim hipster and the waist has NO definition. And those shoes.

    • ktr33

Very Pierrot le Fou. Intentional, since she’s at some Fool Fete, apparently?

    • Denise Alden

At first, I was all, “oh, no, you’re not getting soft,” then I saw the photos. Gird your frickin’ loins, boys. :)

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Why would anyone ever steal Dianna Agron’s dress?! Steal from stylish people, you great nitwit!

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Her face and hair look nice, though.

    • Kate4queen

I’ll say it for you. It’s horrible.

    • Denise Rambo

Those shooties are just a big NO!

    • MartyBellerMask

As bad as it is from the front, it’s worse from the side. Like AWFUL.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

That square cut/flapper shape is everywhere, but sadly not as well executed as the Anna Sui Fall line.

If you want to say something nice, “At least it’s not a Lanvin jumpsuit.”

    • LadyVimes

I’d put that top with a pencil skirt. Debating as to whether it would be best tucked in or untucked…

    • FancyPhilly

She’ll always be that clean-cut girl who dates the hipster for like two minutes and seems to assume an entirely new personality. She needs to go back to fresh faced starlet and let the “hip chick” look die.

    • Shibori Girl

      Judy Noodles it aint’

    • Sif

      Her eyebrows look amazing!

    • MilaXX

Her hair & face look great. Apparently Lupita’s MUA did her face fro this. Man has skills. The outfit isn’t great, but it’s not bad for someone who so often looks like a train wreck on the RC. Shoes are all wrong with this and the black under dress is weird, but for the longest time she seemed to only wear things that are too big or a bag of wrinkles. The fact that she looks clean and well put together is a step in the right direction.

    • kimmeister

I’m glad I’m working from home now, after my dentist appt, because I totally just roared out loud at Bitcheeos.

The top looks like a sting ray convention.

    • Imasewsure

I just can’t with the hair…. the dress could work on Olivia Wilde (congrats Mama) but Emma can’t work it for sure

    • Sif

no metallic fabric? Surprise! This is actually an improvement for her.

    • Danielle

Wait, this is all one piece? D:

    • Daisy Walker

Dear Uncles, that was a waste of 20 minutes.

    • B_C_J

Luminous skin. Lovely makeup. Pretty hair. The rest is not flattering at all.

    • GeoDiva

I don’t know anyone who would look good in that outfit.

    • Jacob Bowen

She looks like she’s wearing a fancy elementary school art smock that some mother (with WAY too much time on her hands) made for her “stylish” 7 year old daughter.

    • marlie

I kind of like the dress. It’s cute on her. Emma’s makeup looks great, and I like her hair too. Those shoes, though? ALL wrong.

    • mrspotts66

i cannot imagine a scenario where those bootie shoe…things…would work.
      i find them hideous.
i could totally love the rest of the outfit with out those fugly things. ugh.

      and she has beautiful eyes!

    • MandaK

      I’m calling it. Maternity outfit.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Pierrot collar + orthopedic booties = NO.

    • demidaemon

This is a dumb dress with dumber shoes. Nope.

    • Amel

awkward first day at a law internship

    • Kate

      the ring is kindof cool

    • Highland Fashionista

I’m not completely offended by the dress, but it looks like it is swallowing her. I take it she is one of those teeny tiny hollywood people. this dress needs someone taller.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

The top of the dress reminds me of a cuttlefish. If you put it in the water I’m sure it could swim of its own volition.

    • MaggieMae

I don’t think she has found her style niche. More often than not, she looks awkward in clothes she wears. Not a match.

    • msdamselfly

I think she looks pretty cute here. Sweetness of the dress is very flattering along with lovely hair and makeup. Probably the best I’ve seen her look

    • Sophia Finfer

“It looks like she’s wearing a lobster bib with delusions of grandeur.” is one of the best things I’ve read in a while.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I think the top is adorable and should be worn with skinny pants and shoes that are not hideous.

    • Little_Olive

It’s not very good, but I don’t find myself as angry at it as TLo is (I should hate the shoes with a passion… but no). We’ve certainly seen worse from her.

The top part might have worked as a shirt.

    • MM4321

I agree that the hair and makeup are lovely. The charisma quotient, however, is in the minus column. I might not be her biggest fan.

    • Mary Lauer

I like the dress, except for the fact that it hides any shape she has. Nice makeup, hiddy booties.

    • MoHub

      Oh. Lord. No.

    • http://batman-news.com alytoyou

      Cute except for the shoes.

    • deech_sea

Love the dress. Hate the shoes and the bag.

    • BrooklynBomber

Looks like separates bought at Anthro.

    • Julie Chase

I LOVE the hair. It’s so kicky.

    • Jennifer

Anyone else getting a Sarah Michelle Gellar as early Buffy vibe from Emma here? She reminds me a lot of a young SMG in this photo.

Don’t like the dress or the shoes.

    • MannahattaMamma

those shoes are freaking ugly. any points earned with the slightly kicky frock (not many points) immediately canceled out by shoes-from-hell.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Don’t love that dress. A little too Amish-Chic for me. Love the hair!

    • quiltrx

That’s the best her head has looked in ages. And if the top of the dress were just a top, lined in white not black, it would be cute.

      • wisdomy

I agree. Her hair and makeup are the prettiest I’ve ever seen on her. I think the top part of the dress could actually be really cute, and looks better on her than on the model. The booties baffle me. Actually, the entire concept of those sort of booties baffles me. I imagine they look cute on a shelf, but when you get them on, well… what do they GO WITH? Too heavy for dresses (except maybe they’d work with tights, I guess?) and the cut is wrong for skinny pants, IMO (I find that sliver of bare ankle they produce jarring, breaks up the line too much). Maybe I’m just old.

    • Durteemartini

That dress doesn’t look good on the model either. It’s got too many weird edges. Emma’s makeup is perfection. God to have that skin…. (says the former lifeguard who now lives in Texas, aka Land of the %$#@!’ing Relentless Sun).

    • ScarlettHarlot

As much as I don’t like the outfit, her makeup looks quite nice here.
