Shailene Woodley in Stella McCartney at the “Divergent” London Premiere

Posted on March 31, 2014

We don’t super-love this dress or anything, but it could look pretty right on her, with the right styling. Unfortunately, she’s not a “right styling” kind of gal.

Without a little something to bump up the formality or play up the color, this dress can look awfully nightgowny. The clean face and delicate gold chain around the neck make her bedroom-appropriate, but not exactly red carpet-ready. Shoving a bangle up her arm wasn’t the answer. Some bolder jewelry, including earrings, and a stronger lip would’ve been the direction we’d have gone.

But then again, if she’d asked us, we wouldn’t have picked this dress in the first place. Sorry to sound so crass (not really), but it just doesn’t look very expensive.

    • Paigealicious

I actually quite like the silhouette on the model/mannequin picture (with nipplage airbrushed out, I’m assuming). Doesn’t work on Shailene, though.

    • thecitysleeps

I like the colour and the back and the lace detail. It looks pretty to me, but the material is terrible!

      • gabbilevy

In a more expensive-looking fabric (and probably on a different girl, unfortunately), this dress could actually look quite pretty. As is, not so much.

    • @Biting Panda

The dress, if it didn’t have a train, would look like it came from Walmart.
Midscroll, I found myself thinking this dress is only for the toned and perky. No supporting undergarments allowed here.

      • Glam Dixie

It looks like T-shirt fabric. Walmart perfectly describes this.

      • kimmeister

She is toned and perky though, I’ll give her that.

    • alyce1213

Stella’s making fancy cheap nighties. Not a good choice, but I envy her ability to wear it.

    • Jen

Thanks Stella for the included visible bra straps. As far as Shailene goes though… baby steps… I’ll take two pieces of jewelry. Maybe next time they’ll enhance the look.

    • RussellH88

For someone who is trying to position herself as the next Jennifer Lawrence, she needs to step it up.

      • decormaven

WAY up. A different style team needs to come in here.

    • Emily Smith

She seems like the type of girl who never wears underwear, so on that front this dress suits her well.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

      …key word is “BOLD”, Shai.

    • Gatto Nero

      You are being kind.
The dress looks crazy cheap and tacky. And the styling does nothing to elevate it.
      Stella strikes again.

      • random_poster

On top of that, the multiple straps on that thing are ridiculous, especially in the back. What an awful dress.

      • Golfkat

Couldn’t agree more. The lacework makes it look so trashy :/ Yikes.

      • Kayceed

I collect vintage Olga nightgowns, which were obviously the inspiration here. This is insipid.

        • decormaven

          Called it on the nose.

      • Beardslee

        Prom gown

    • msdamselfly

I really like the dress- the sort of accessibility of it. but I agree, it needs better styling

    • Danielle

      Two words: breast petals.

      • TropiCarla

        One word: Dimmers.
(Per a lingerie associate at my wedding fitting. I was almost too shocked to giggle.)

        • Danielle

Dimmers! I’m giggling at my desk!!

    • Andrew Schroeder

      Elongated camisole.

      • ballerinawithagun

Exactly! This also reminds me of workout wear I actually wore in the 80s (hanging my head in shame) leotard that was thong cut (thank you Jamie Lee Curtis, more shame) just extended into a dress. Yes, the fabric looks that cheap.

    • Gloriana Reginata

The dress does show off her amazing body without being trashy, though, so for that alone I give it a mild thumbs-up.

    • Imasewsure

I really like her hair and makeup and I actually like the dress (in spite of the material) but it just doesn’t work on Shay Shay.
Not sure why… probably too mature as usual… but this is pure Marisa Tomei

    • ovarB

Seriously…stop using the faction colors as a source of what to wear on the RC. ERUDITE!!!

    • marlie

I liked this when I saw it on the interwebs last night, but upon further review, I have concerns.

She certainly doesn’t need a bra, but the nipplage further enhances the “nightie” aspect of the dress. And I don’t know if it’s the dress, or the way that she’s standing, but the dress doesn’t quite lie correctly on her body. And finally, that arm… thingy… needs to be thrown out. It’s terrible. I’ve given up railing on her to change up her hair/makeup/jewelry at this point.

      • Sophie

The arm cuff is biting into her flesh and looks like it would be painful to wear for a longer amount of time. With the dress being what it is, I’m actually surprised there isn’t more nipplage to see.

    • Kent Roby

I hate this dress, but in comparison to Shailene’s much-more-hiddy RC looks, this is a werq.

    • Anna

Great raw materials. Needs “betta” packaging.

Out of curiosity, I clicked on the link. This 2 for $49-looking Victoria’s Secret sleepwear special shit is actually $4,000.00.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        $4,000? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :)

      • demidaemon

WHAT? Now I know for sure that Stella is delusional (not that I needed confirmation or anything).

    • Golfkat

It just looks kind of trashy :/ Not liking it at all.

    • Janet B

I’m pretty sure a movie premiere requires Important Jewelry.

    • ShaoLinKitten

The biceps bracelet is such a visual non-sequitur with this outfit. The whole outfit looks half-assed. Does this girl only own one necklace?

    • Grumpy Girl

And look: she kept her two-fingers-only manicure.

Is that her make-up-wearing sister in the crowd behind her?

    • ojosazules

Her smile has warmed up a few degrees. Points for that.

    • MilaXX

Doesn’t she have a contract with Cargo cosmetics? Give her some lipstick please. Also give her some petals to cover the nips when she’s wearing slinky dresses in the cold.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Stella McCartney? Oh, well then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…

      • sojourneryouth

Exactly. This dress is actually nicer than 90% of what she designs.

    • ejsesqueer

this was the red carped of prominent and disastrous darts

    • formerlyAnon

Well, nightgown, fancy cotton tank-inspired dress, whatever. It’s making me think of the summer tops we wore with self-embroidered jeans shorts and waaaay too much eye makeup at 16 and 17 or so. On the weekend nights where someone had a car and we were ready for our tame version of looking for trouble. The ones we put gauze shirts over till we got out of the house lest our parents realize that “hanging out” involved more dark parks, underage drinking, dope, boys who weren’t going to college and driving aimlessly than it did malls, movies, and MaryBeth’s house.

    • Rhonda Shore

The back of the dress looks like my Speedo swimsuit, the one you wear for swimming laps. Still, she looks better than usual and i like her hair combed in that way.

    • Kate4queen

I actually quite like this Stella McCartney dress…I never thought I’d say that….

    • Winter_White

A question for people with teenage daughters who’ve read The Fault in Our Stars:

I only have the internet buzz to go by, but it seems as though there are an awful lot of teen fangirls who loved that book…and are primed to fall in love with Shailene when the movie comes out in June. Not to be alarmist – lol – but if she is about to be deified, T Lo should probably get everything negative they might ever want to say about her out of their systems now! Hell hath no fury, etc. ;)

      • TwiddlyStun

Agreed, partially… While you are right, there are a lot of non-teens and non-girls who loved the book, too. It’s part of some high school curricula already. My teenage son just finished it for school and thought it was amazing. As evidenced on Hypable, the superfans have been judging through casting, filming (John Green – the author – was on set and tweeted photos and updates throughout) and the release of the trailers. So, any fury would probably already be here. Plus, T Lo doesn’t let fans get in the way of opinions or snark!

        • Winter_White

Was teasing. I’ve been around long enough to know that the uncles are never skeered!

          • TwiddlyStun

            But of course! Well put.

      • ShaoLinKitten

Though fangirls can go either way– they might HATE her as Hazel and decide she’s evil. Many of them took that road with KStew, a feeling that only intensified after her break up with Rob P. Shailene is also in Divergent, and was in The Spectactular Now. Teenage girls are fickle creatures, and they could turn on Shailene. One never knows.

        • Winter_White

Yikes, I hadn’t thought of that possibility!

It’ll be interesting to see if the Powers That Be for TFIOS plead with her, twist her arm…or contractually require her to work with a good stylist while she’s promoting that movie. The book is so well-loved that I’m sure the studio is dreaming big.

      • Jacob Bowen

I am listening to it on audiobook, and crossing my fingers she doesn’t ruin it. So far it has been such a change up from anything I’ve read lately and the sheer honesty of the language and emotion in the book is so refreshing. Not being a teenage girl though, I will only be angry with the movie producers, TLo can saw WHATEVER the fuck they want, that’s actually what I want.

    • stubbornthoughts

I like this dress in theory, BUUUUUUUHHHHT it looks like Kmart lingerie.

    • BuffaloBarbara

Nailed it with the cheap nightgown comparison. Just make it a little shinier and it’s a great peignoir. As a dress, not so much. Is the nightie-dress the new slip-dress?

Some serious statement jewelry would have helped, but not that much.

    • LeelaST

      Dress-length camisole. Why?

    • KinoEye

Nope. Totally looks like a nightgown. The back is interesting, though. The bangle looks like it’s so tight it will soon cut off her circulation.

      • demidaemon

The back is what made me hate the design. It just made an already cheap dress look cheaper.

        • KinoEye

Yeah, I can see that. But at least there’s a little more visual interest to it than the front. Lining anything with that… lace takes it straight to the bargain bin, though.

    • vitaminC

She looks like she’s wearing three bras and a camisole, all DTM. OUT.

    • Nika E

The back is lovely but its so plain from the front. I dunno, im just not a fan of her style.

    • MzzPants

From Rue 21 straight to the red carpet.

    • MartyBellerMask

That’s a Kohl’s tank top in dress form.

    • Anplica Fiore

At least her head looks good! Nice hair & makeup.

    • colleenjanel

She looks like she wants to be a Kristen Stewart … roll out of bed, sweep on some mascara, throw on a gown, run her hand through her “low maintenance” hair (“when was the last time I washed it?? hmmm … maybe I’ll do that tomorrow”) and call it a day. I can imagine she told her hairdresser “just cut it all off so I don’t have to actually *DO* anything to my hair.” Sorry, Shai, even with short hair, it still needs to be styled. It would not kill you to have someone work a round brush through it to give it some shape.

And it’s not like SHE would actually have to style it … doesn’t she have hair/makeup people to do it for her? All she has to do is sit there. No excuses.

      • FrigidDiva

As much as KStew makes my eye twitch, at least when she’s doing the RC for her movies, she actually shows up in some killer fashions. Her grungy hair and make up might not be my personal fave, but she has a look and she goes with it. She’s figured out how to keep that “rocker chick” style aesthetic she goes for, yet still look polished enough to be promoting her projects. That’s what bugs me about Shailene. She could keep her crunchy granola roots and still put together. Style is about expression and I’m sure there’s a team of stylists out there that could connect to her personality and make her look stunning. And totally agree with the hair. There’s just no excuse.

    • ashtangajunkie

      This dress is a bummer.

    • colleenjanel

Chop it off at the ankles, and it’s straight out of the JC Penney sleepwear department.

    • Megan Kennedy

The puppy dog expression on that boy in the last photo is hilarious.

    • wisdomy

      Oh, a floor-length t-shirt. Lovely.

    • Synnamin

Cheap fabric, cheap trim. Fit’s ok, but it looks like something I could find at TJ Maxx

    • Artesian_Belle

Does she only have two fingernails painted on her right hand??

    • nannypoo

She has three straps in the front to hold her boobs up, but just one tiny hook in the back. I’m worried.

    • crash1212

I really hope they let her grow her hair out…this style does absolutely nothing for her. Also…she got Stella’d.

    • Bob Loblaw

I think the shade of blue is wrong on her.

    • ShaoLinKitten

Also, just noticed that she has had only the ring and pinky fingernails of her right hand painted blue since March 27, according to TLo’s pix. Anyone know why?

    • Comfy

I feel like that must be a super hard dress to wear–not forgiving at all. She’s got the body for it, I just wish she did something with her head.

    • demidaemon

Well, the open back killed it dead for me. Stella, you always disappoint. Horrible color as well.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

I DO own a nightgown exactly like this, minus the train…

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Compared to previous outings, I think she looks great. So I’m giving her two snaps on the curve.

    • macwell

Beautiful dress, but her styling is non existent. Shame.

    • Trickytrisha

Dunno about the dress, it looks like a cheap knit off the sale rack. That necklace has been in just about every pic I’ve seen of her lately. If she didn’t try so hard to look like an elf, I’d prolly like her better.

    • andi56

Euwwww. This dress looks as if it’s made out of Quiana. Anyone old enough here to remember that?

      • Lilak

        Ahem,,,me.
And I still have one Quiana garment left (!). Too strange to part with, so it’s in the costume trunk, just for laffs: long-sleeved shirt, pale pink, longish pointed collar, onesie-stylin’ with a SNAP CROTCH..
        (i KNOW!)

        • formerlyAnon

I liked the snap crotch shirts, if one wanted a shirt tucked in. They stayed where they were supposed to.

        • andi56

That is awesome! The snap crotch was to keep everything in place for disco dancing! Quiana came into being when I was in college, around 1977 or 1978. One of the girls on my hall had a wondrous white dress for dancing, just like in “Saturday Night Fever”! I also taught disco, but we won’t go there today. : ) I am so heartened there is someone my age here!

          • formerlyAnon

There are quite a few of us!

            • andi56

That’s good to know! Then I can make obscure comments, and my peers will get them! : )

      • formerlyAnon

Old enough to have owned it, not just remember it.

    • Judih1

Great color. And considering that she is wearing a backless nightie outside where everyone else is wearing a sweater or coat, she gets points for acting like she isn’t cold. Other than that, this is a NO

    • B_C_J

Pretty nightgown otherwise totally wrong for a red carpet event

    • NBG

Oh FFS, Stella! I am not even mad at Shailene because she clearly does not care but Stella needs to friggin explain herself. Charging ladystars this kind of coin for something my mom wore to curl up on the couch at night and watch Knots Landing is just criminal.

    • stacey

That is some cheap ass looking fabric! Stella McCartney for KMart?

    • TerryMarie

That looks very similar to the Olga nightgowns I used to wear 30 years ago.

      • Vtg Fashion Library

I was thinking the same thing.

    • quiltrx

Nightgown, and not even an expensive one.

    • SewingSiren

      A JLaw clone.

    • Zippypie

The epitome of why I can’t stand Stella McCartney designs.

    • ScarlettHarlot

I give up on her. She’s got schizo style – is she the cult youth coordinator in head to toe beige? The doesn’t give a fuck rebellious teen in shorts and see through t-shirt? The….whatever the above mess is? She needs to consult with a stylist. She doesn’t have to hire one full time, but ffs, have someone teach you the basics so you can repeat them in the future.

    • MissusBee

Think it might look less nightgowny in a darker color. But it still looks like one of those thermal vests they try to make ‘pretty’ with a lacy trim.

Maybe this is what Emmeline Pankhurst wore under her real gown to keep out the icy London chill.

    • kmk05

This dress needed something other than being made out of cotton. The design is great but good god is that the worst fabric choice.

    • NinjaCate

I looks like a very long nightie. No.

    • Pablo

Nipple alert! and the dress seriously looks like pijamas

    • Clash D

All I can say is that there is nothing Erudite about this dress at all.

    • sagecreek

I’m not sure what it takes to carry off a gold snake on one’s arm, but I’m confident that she doesn’t have it.

    • DeniseSchipani

Apart from the back and the train, I HAVE that nightgown. In black. From Target.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

She gets huge points for her excellent posture. Nearly every other young girl on the planet should take notes.

    • kategs

I don’t think anyone has noticed (except to make snarky comments about it) but she wears the same necklace all the time. Perhaps it means more to her than being styled “properly”?

    • dancinfool

Tacky tacky tacky. My dad used to buy sexy, lacy nightgowns every Christmas during the 1950s for my mom (who was often appalled, but wore them anyway. True Love.)
