Lizzy Caplan in Houghton at the “A Night At Sardis” Benefit

Posted on March 27, 2014

We’re always railing against that one focus-pulling accessory; that shoe or bag or earring that winds up fighting the outfit for attention instead of enhancing it or punctuating it. But when it looks like you’ve been forced into a lace jumpsuit against your will (judging by the facial expression), then maybe a big honkin’ pair of focus-pulling shoes is what you need to get yourself through the night. We won’t judge.

Lizzy-Caplan-Night-Sardis-Benefit-Houghton-Tom-LOrenzo-Site-TLO (1)Lizzy Caplan attends the “A Night At Sardis” benefit at the The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles in a Houghton lace jumpsuit paired with a Jimmy Choo clutch and Christian Louboutin ‘Decollette’ pumps.

The shoes, we mean. We won’t judge the shoes. We’re judging the SHIT out of that  jumpsuit, though. You should too. It’s cleansing.

I fully expect to see Kim K. wearing this in white with black undergarments for her next talk show appearance. Or maybe in black with white undergarments, to switch it up? Lizzy honey, you can and should do better.

    Love the shoes, though.

    • melisaurus

      I think she already did?

  • NinjaCate

    *Shrug* I like it.

    • Hysterectomypants

I do, too, right down to the shoes, but I would agree that she’s not really working it.

  • Lace and jumpsuit are two words that should never be paired together.

    • Glam Dixie

I fully expected this thing to have a Stella McCartney label. Yes, it’s THAT ugly.

      • Stella wishes she came up with this first.

        • demidaemon

It’s true. She is probably already considering a merger with Houghton. Be frightened.

    • Chaiaiai

BKs, J Crew has a white lace jumpsuit right now listed as a “wedding dress”. Oh here go, hell come.

      • CakesOnAPlane

I had to look this up to confirm it. And you are right. And it is HIDEOUS.

      • Introspective

first of all, jeez j crew has gone to the dogs. second of all snaps for the calvin tran reference!!! lurv

  • Glam Dixie

No, oh dear God, no. That thing is hideous and does horrible things to her proportions. Keep the shoes, throw out the rest and start over. Also, take the eyeliner away from your makeup artist. Way too much gunk around your pretty eyes.

  • Scimommy

I love it from the waist up and the shoes. I’m imagining something black – a cigarette pant perhaps? – in between and it’s all good.

    • what not

My first thought was that that’s a lovely neckline on her. The bottom isn’t great, but at least the laciness obscures any wrinkling or other weirdness around the crotch, so I actually think it could be worse. A skinny pant would be nice, yes.

  • Courtenay P

since when is black lace supposed to be Spring 2014?

  • leahpapa

This must be the worst aspect of celebrity, if you’re someone with a stylist: Every day is basically School Picture Day, and you have to stand there and grimace while you chafe in whatever outfit your mother picked out for you. Solidarity, LC.

  • Jacob Bowen

I could TOTALLY do this jumpsuit if it was loose like on the model and maybe LINED? On the model I think it looks cool, but I don’t want to be able to see UNDER-garments, they’re supposed to be UNDER clothing. Also, those shoes are AWESOME.

    • SophieB210

I know! The loose version and flat sandals give it a vibe that makes “chic German tourist” not an oxymoron.

  • @Biting Panda

Lose those shoes and she’s a maintenance person at a funeral home. Those shoes are hot sex, but they can’t save that outfit.

  • hughman

Who doesn’t love Fredericks of Hollywood?

    • @Biting Panda

When I was a young, teen girl, innocent and curious, that store was my most scandalous stop, during any trip around the mall with my friends.

      • hughman

Because it was so shocking to show ankle at that time.

        • Sarah

        • @Biting Panda

          Ass. : )

        • Qitkat

‘Tis been an excellent day for laughs at TLo BK International.

        • Glam Dixie

My daughter has to wear these hideous long PLEATED FRONT uniform pants at work and she and the other girls are always lifting their pant legs just an inch or two and exclaiming “DAT ANKLE!”

          • zenobar

DYING. Can’t wait to bust that one out!

  • Is she not successful enough to say “Fuck you guys, I’m staying home and eating toast”? That would be my reaction when I saw this on the clothing rail.

    • mjude

I think I will use that quote next time I don’t want to do anything with my friends. “Fuck you guys, I’m staying home and eating toast”?

      • IMNAngryLiberal

That will also be an excellent response for those useless all day meetings I keep getting invited to at work.

        • marlie

I HATE those. And unfortunately, I have way too many of them for my liking. My workplace looooves their meetings, even though I – and everyone else – could get so much more actual work done if we eliminated at least half of them.

          • barbarienne

Yesterday I stopped in my boss’s office on my way out and said, “I got so much done today! Probably because we didn’t have any meetings.” He acknowledged that meetings kill productivity. But that doesn’t stop him from scheduling more!

          • marlie

I’ve said the same thing. I’ve been so busy lately that my boss is at least cool enough to cover for me when I need to skip those not-required-but-highly-recommended meetings.

  • Rand Ortega

Shopping with Kim Kardashian has its benefits.

    • random_poster

Oh, you are too nice. I can’t imagine any benefit in that.

      • Rand Ortega

  • I like how she’s hovering the clutch by the crotch – just like I would.

  • JP

    That poor, poor woman.

  • Qitkat

For my focus-pulling accessory, I would have gone for the Shia LeBeouf solution, myself.

    • SierraDelta

    • random_poster

Yes! Instead of making McDonald’s and SpongeBob fashion, where are the big purses and hats that scream things such as “I Hate My Stylist”, “My Stylist Hates Me”, and “I Signed a Big Fat Contract, So $$$”?

    • demidaemon

HA! Does it include a homemade paper bag mask?

  • MilaXX

The fear that many stylist seem to have of women wearing loose clothing is getting ridiculous. This jumpsuit works better on the model because of the causal, slouchy vibe. Trying to dress it up by making it tighter and pairing it with the world’s fugliest shoe was a really bad idea. She looks miserable and the outfit is just silly.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

      Totally agree.

    • marlie

I really like the shoes, but I thought the same thing about the outfit. There’s a *reason* why the designer made it that way. Though that still wouldn’t have saved the look.

  • Fuchaforever

What is this “Houghton” that I’m hearing about all of the sudden? Second strike.

    • Dagney

      Right? Sooo awful.

  • alyce1213

I’m not familiar with Houghton, but from what I’ve seen today, I don’t want to see any more, ever.
This is monumentally ugly and unflattering to boot.

    • @Biting Panda

  • Sarah

I kept trying to see if I needed to further insult that jumpsuit for giving her a camel toe. I quit because there is no need to decipher that area when I already know I hates the garment for myriad reasons, not least of which it is making her look thicker than she is.

    • tereliz

The seam running from waist to crotch is giving the illusion of camel toe, even if it isn’t actually happening. WHY?

  • mickiemonkey

Was she forced to wear this? Was someone holding her loved ones hostage? Is she wearing this so baby giraffes won’t be fed to lions?

    • Gatto Nero

      The only logical explanation.

  • Gatto Nero

“Black lace” and “jumpsuit” — that’s two strikes already.
I don’t like the fit on her. The pants should skim her hips and drape straight down from there — the pant legs are too narrow. (If she must wear the thing at all, that is.)
The pale makeup and brown eyeshadow make her look tired.

  • Kitten Mittons

This one actually made me laugh. That first picture, the angle of the shot combined with the jumpsuit just make her bottom half look comically short compared to her top half.

    Now I’ve got the giggles.

  • lunchcoma

    Black lace. Jumpsuit. Snakeskin heels.

This is a blatant go home and start over outfit.

  • Boulderista

on the model the fit makes it look like a beach cover-up, not my choice but not horrific. On the Lizzy this is dreadful beyond words. And the fact that the pockets are visible through the lace is sending me over the edge.

    • CB

I agree. I know some people are mortally opposed to jumpsuits, but I actually think they can work from time to time, and the slouchy shape of the runway version is pretty cool. But whatever is happening on Lizzy is upsetting me.

      • Kayceed

Yes – I actually really like the slouchy silhouette with flats – if it wasn’t unlined lace this could be a really casual chic look.

        • CB

Yes, the unlined lace is a HUGE problem. But I think the silhouette of the runway version is so casual and fresh!

      • Imasewsure

I agree. I don’t really mind it on the model. It’s kind of cool but only with the sandals and with the looser casual vibe…

    • marlie

For some bizarre reason, the visible pockets is the most offensive part of the whole look to me. Either line the damn thing, or don’t put freaking pockets in at all. I refuse to accept the pocket lining as a legitimate “design element.”

  • Trickytrisha

There’s so much awful going on here you almost have to feel sorry for her. Then the shoes keep shouting “NO! You don’t have to feel sorry for her”.

  • Constant Reader

The tyranny of sheer black lace continues. Somebody get me my smelling salts.

  • ashtangajunkie

Shouldn’t a post containing “black lace” + “jumpsuit” come with a warning label?

  • decormaven

Too bad the coral snake can’t come back and bite the stylist in the hind parts. That is a fugly outfit and unfair to foist on anyone.

    • Myra Amler

OMG! I immediately thought coral snake. All it’s missing is yellow.

    • zenobar

FUN FACT: Milk Snakes swallow their prey (voles, eggs, celebrity feet) whole.

  • clatie

  • ShaoLinKitten

Nuke it from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

  • marlie

The jumpsuit is terrible. I can’t tell which version is worse – Lizzy’s, or the model’s. The shoes could be awesome with a whole different outfit. And more lazy, half-done makeup and hair.

  • barbarienne

The very definition of “hiddy.” I can’t think of anyone that would look good on. It looks awful on the model, and even worse on Ms. Caplan.

  • kimmeister

Great, another lace that causes me to stare at her boobs wondering if I’m seeing nip, or if it’s just the pattern. Or maybe that’s what she intended.

  • I actually love the shoes, but the jumpsuit looks like she’s about to perform a striptease to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl.”

    • In_Stitches

Her trying to get out of this on her own would be a HILARIOUS striptease.

      • Now I am trying to imagine which would be funnier: her struggling to free herself, or this actually being a tearaway lace jumpsuit.

  • Dagney

Okay this is the second garment I have seen from this designer today, and they both look like home ec homework assignments gone sadly awry. What the…? Who or what is Houghton? Are these clothes supposed to be someone’s joke? Is this design by The Onion?

  • andi56

I simply can’t look at any more ugly clothes today. This chick looks like a Washington, DC intern, trying to be daring.

  • NMMagpie

After her last terrible outfit, I saw this and thought: “Oh, now she’s heading in the right–”

That’s when I scrolled down to see that it’s a jumpsuit. A perfectly hideous jumpsuit in a never-should-have-been-made way.

  • KT

Well, at least her makeup is great. Respect must be paid. And yes, I am definitely judging the shit out of that jumpsuit. So much side-eye over here.

  • Fred Vaughn

The jumpsuit is nice on her, but it isn’t really FOR her.

  • Tracy_Flick

First we have naked shoes in mid-blizzard, then we have Halloween in March. Will no one think of the seasons?

  • littlevase

It’s really not bad but it’s just way too tight. Remember when clothes actually fit and were not spray painted on? Yeah I don’t either.

  • demidaemon

Those shoes are awesome. That jumpsuit is hideous and stumpifying. Whoever did this to you, Lizzy, should be beaten, fired, and have any fashion credentials revoked.

  • demidaemon

Also, was Houghton a sponsor at this event? Because everyone seems to be in it and it all looks awful. Houghton = The new Stella McCartney.

  • GeoDiva

Love the shoes, but that jumpsuit…..ugh!

  • mrspotts66

i like it. it looks like really comfy pajamas for lounging and reading.
    NOT for red carpet-ing.

  • BLauD

I would have done all I could to keep the attention up at the face, that way you can pretend it’s just a dress or something. No one needs to look below the waist…

  • SouthernGirlRena

That jumpsuit is a teeny tiny bit less hideous when it is really loose like the model is wearing it. It is definitely bad though. Shoes are fun.

  • enchanted216

It’s not supposed to be skin-tight! Ugh! Hideous! Shoes would be cute if the fit was correct.

  • FridaStaire

Jumpsuits are a wicked conspiracy against non-models!

  • Clash D

Scroll down fug. The top part’s okay but everything after the waist is so whack. The shoes are nice up close but from a distance they don’t look good.

  • BayTampaBay

    Love the shoes!

  • B_C_J

The top is beautiful. Add a full length skirt in a luscious color & she’ll be the belle of the ball. Here she looks like a train wreck

  • Danielle

That hair is so flat, holy moly.

  • BlairBear

a black lace jumpsuit, what a fresh idea. at least this one is mostly lined

  • crash1212

If one must wear a black lace jumpsuit, the slouchy one on the model is the way to go. Skintight black lace jumpsuit is not the way to go. Only good thing about this train wreck IS the shoes, but they look horrible with that horrible jumpsuit. Another BK coined an acronym yesterday…something GHASOG – Go Home and Start Over Girl.

  • Pepper Collins

YIKES! MAKE IT GO AWAY!!!!! Who brought back the jumpsuits?! Imma hurt them!

  • ScarlettHarlot

My first thought on the jumpsuit: needs a belt.
My second thought on the jumpsuit: needs to be burned.

  • EveEve

Every time I think that they can’t do any worse with the black lace trend, I’m proven wrong. It just keeps getting worse.

  • LIKE…….shoes…NO!

  • kt

The shoes are fab and pretty perfect, pop of color, not pulling focus. The Jumpsuit is pretty cute also. This is the way to deploy “see through” if you must.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Apparently, Houghton heard a ho.

  • kategs

If this look were slouchier as on the model, I think it could be rather cool. As it is? No.

  • Nice poses. I’m not being sarcastic. That is the only way to stand in that, thing, without looking like you are a fake super-villain. She made it work.

  • lalahartma

    Lol! Gross!

  • webslice33

that jumpsuit looks like the same as the dress that tacky kim k. wore

  • cocohall

I thinking she’s fucking with us. Who wears something like this to an event where the backdrop says Alzheimer’s? She looks like she knows that a lace jumpsuit is a shitty idea and does not give one fuck. I kinda think that make me like her more.
