IN or OUT: Leslie Mann in Zuhair Murad at the “Mr. Peabody and Sherman”

Posted on March 07, 2014

As you might imagine (if you had any sort of soul or possessed the gift of empathy) we are, as they say, strung the fuck out on discussing red carpetry as this, our busiest week in red carpetry closes. Being a couple of going-on 18 years, we are, of course, at the bickering stage of things. Being attention whores of even longer standing, we’re dragging you into it, like bad parents.

Leslie-Mann-Zuhair-Murad-Mr-Peabody-Sherman-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO-1Leslie Mann attends the premiere of “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” in Los Angeles, California in a Zuhair Murad dress.

Leslie-Mann-Zuhair-Murad-Mr-Peabody-Sherman-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO-3Zuhair Murad Spring 2014 Collection

Let us first stipulate that both T & Lo think she looks good here, for the most part. It’s a perfectly appropriate choice for an event like this, where you’re not going to want to come across grandiose. But T did not want to feature this look at all today because he found it boring and not worth discussing. “It’s just a LBAWD,” he whined, making up an acronym for “Little Black And White Dress” on the spot; an acronym that no one, anywhere, will ever adopt and use. “It’s bold!” exclaimed Lorenzo, who is wont to exclaim. “It’s graphic! It fits her great! It’s INTERESTING, DAMMIT!”

“It is not.”

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Love it! She looks head-turning!

OUT! Enh. I’m yawning and snoring. I’m snawning.

Having lost the Oscar to Lupita, poor Jennifer Lawrence had the added indignity of having to wait ALL WEEK to find out what the Bitter Kittens thought of her somewhat basic Oscars dress. Rest easy, Jen. They voted it IN.

    • Meg

I think it is both great and interesting on her. IN.

    • gabbilevy

Those hip panels really aren’t doing her any favors, but small in for doing something slightly off the beaten path.

      • tereliz

If the lacy hip panels were any bigger I’d call this an out. As is, it’s on the verge and I CAN’T STAND the clutch, but I love the graphic B&W of the rest of the dress and the white shoes are working. And she looks so pleased with herself. In.

      • StillGary

Thats because the white strip is creacreating the optical illusion bulge — but damn, she looks pretty and happy so I’ll grudge an in.

      • Little_Olive

On the model the effect is so weird I couldn’t focus on Leslie.

    • RussellH88

I say OUT, those side details are awkward and kinds ugly and her purse looks like a Kindle case.

    • Sally Spannagle

I say it’s an IN but with different shoes. Plus her makeup is lovely.

    • E2_Remote

Aside from those lace cutouts on the hips, which I’m not sold on, it’s all quite acceptable. IN. Her face looks great I might add.

      • Rhonda Shore

It’s in but only because of the crispness of the black and white graphic. Those lace cutouts do something weird to the overall look.

    • Darva Sutra

It’s bold, but in an overworked, too-tricky way. The way the design is placed, it’s giving me Optical Delusion.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Optical Delusion – great name for a band. :)

        • demidaemon

I feel like this band would have shows like Miley Cyrus’ current one. In other words, nightmare inducing.

      • 3boysful

This. The illusion around the neckline bugs, as it is purposeless. Looks like accidental lingerie exposure.

        • Kitten Mittons

It makes it look like it’s standing up, away from her shoulders. The neckline is odd, but overall I’d vote IN.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

IN. I appreciate that she’s wearing the same color scheme as Mr. Peabody.

    • mjude

its been a long week in my world but this I don’t not care for. the side details do not like. OUT

    • patticake1601

In. She looks gorgeous. White shoes out though.

    • sugarkane105

I feel like this is a different look for her, so IN.

    • alyce1213

Very OUT. Whatever is going on at her midsection should not be happening, it’s awkward and visually off. Also, white shoes.
I may be prejudiced — whenever I see her face, I hear her voice and I’m done.

      • serenab44

I KNOW! THANK YOU! I thought maybe I was rude to think it but she so annoys me.

      • Farthingale

Rupaul once said –“white pumps…the sign of a true hooker.”

    • Nariya

The lace hip panels give a weird illusion of love handles which is ridiculous, so out. But I don’t think it’s boring, and it’s otherwise pretty nice.

      • Janet B

The models have love handles, too.

    • International Model

L’Bawd. When in doubt, make it French. Also, OUT. She matches Mr. Peabody and there is unwanted lace.

      • formerlyAnon

        L’Bawd. Genius.

If you’re not in marketing, consider it. 😉

        • International Model

This comment made me feel like Taylor Swift – in the good way.

    • @Biting Panda

      Eh. Whichever.

      • kmk05

That is the most accurate description.

      • demidaemon

Whenever I don’t give an F about one of these IN or OUT decisions, I always assume that it must be OUT, for not inspiring me to want to make a decision. It’s convoluted logic but it works.

        • formerlyAnon

Maybe convoluted, but also compelling logic. I might have to adopt it, which might significantly decrease my number of “in” placements.

    • barbarienne

From the front those sheer panels on the hips are creating the illusion of bad muffin-top. For that alone, I say OUT.

In the larger TLo argument, I must side with Team Tom, here. It’s a perfectly fine dress with some fun angles and what-all, but nothing we haven’t seen a zillion times before. It’s “perfectly fine” where “perfectly fine” = “boring.”

      • Super_Red

hah! I should have scrolled further down before posting my comment. Amen!

    • hughman

“Little Black and White Dress You Wear To Your Reunion To Show Why You Were Head Cheerleader”

      • formerlyAnon

Sometimes all it takes is one sentence and I know why Biting Panda is your friend.

    • MilaXX

Can we vote IN and still think it’s bland? It just a perfectly nice dress, with suitable shoes. Her hair is nice, her makeup is nice and the dress fits but there’s nothing here setting the world on fire. It’s venue appropriate and I don’t hate anything about the look, but I wouldn’t call it bold by any stretch of the imagination.

    • Grumpy Girl

Out. Just because it’s Mr Peabody’s color scheme doesn’t make it Ok, It seems to fit awkwardly and the lace/white accents at the hip do odd things to her shape. And I want a stronger lip. It does look better on her than the model though.

    • JauntyJohn

Ugh. That white backdrop (Mr. Peabody’s snout — which is a phrase we might have once thought would never appear on this blog, but there you go, life is a funny old thing that way) is doing her NO favors in that one shot. And from the side it is an awkward look.
But she is working it like a pro, and for that I must count this as IN, if only by a hair.

    • DinaSews

It looks like she is wearing a full slip and it’s showing at the neckline. Boring but fine. No vote from me either way.

    • funwithpurses

IN! She looks lovely. Also…doesn’t she look like a lot like Will Arnett when she smiles?

    • Alicia

I really hate the lace. Both the white lace and the neck and the black lace at the hips. It takes an interesting, graphic black and white dress and makes it a discounted Victoria’s Secret dress for secretaries who are having affairs with the boss.

      • scoobynacks

Gonna have to go with OUT because of the lace. The placement makes it look like she’s got lace covered love handles. She doesn’t have them, and I shouldn’t see them. They actually look worse on the model to me, so I guess props?

    • shopgirl716

She looks great, but not interesting from a fashion standpoint. Wish I looked that good!

    • Dave Hime

I’m snawning. Though it would be a great look for Diana Prince–the W factor, of course.

    • KinoEye

    • luludexter

Out- I liked this dress until I scrolled down and saw those whack lace panels on the sides. They look even worse on the model. If it wasn’t for those, it would be an in.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. I feel like I’ve seen 20 other versions of this dress.

    • conniemd

I don’t like the black lace hip panel, but she looks good and its moderately interesting. IN.

    • Judy_S

The lace panels are creepy–as if she became transparent in some places. Which I guess means that I don’t think it’s basic enough, or LBAWDy enough.

    • Laura Renee

Lol, you guys are great. I love the stories (sometimes about the celebrities, sometimes yourselves) you provide with these posts, it’s what really makes this site awesome. Great respect too for keeping this up in face of what I imagine must be massive burnout, too.

I’m really more on Tom’s side about this, though it does suit her…I just don’t think it warrants exclaiming. :) The lacy cutouts don’t add anything, I think.

    • Jangle57

I find the dress boring in spite of the details and the white shoes just pushed me over the edge – OUT

    • Janet B

The odd waist/hip lumpy illusion = Out.

    • Jessica Freeman

OUT for the sheer lace panels. She was so close.

      • decormaven

Another county heard from – out, for the reason named above.

    • SayWhaaatNow

Out. The lace cutouts make it a tricky dress that could work if she changed the styling, but she turned it bland by going with white shoes and natural (though lovely) makeup.

    • Cortney Dean

Love it. Basic, but it fits well and is interesting enough to not be boring

    • Mona_Visa

      OUT. Boring shoes, boring hair.

    • Mazenderan

Nah. It’s a work dress with weirdly inappropriate lace panels. Out

      • kimmeister

The pelvic lace panels seem particularly out of place for a children’s movie.

        • Mazenderan

Agreed. For a boring dress – there’s a surprising amount to dislike about it!

    • Trickytrisha

So fun reading you guys – so a big fat IN for TLo! Leslie, on the other hand, nope. The white parts of the bodice and the lace look lumpy and dumpy. She looks fine, but not so fine that I wanna look at her in this dress.

    • Sofia Bentivoglio

out for the love handles illusion and out because this dress is too edgy for her looks. also, the dress is just not that great.

    • random_poster

In, but I’d like it better if the white part at the hips (below the black lace) was black. As is, it gives the appearance of the bulge when wearing a tight garment, and you know she has none there.

    • ojosazules

Out. The black lace makes for an unfortunate optical illusion. And it’s boring.

    • poorellensmith

OUT. It’s not horrible, but those lace side panels kill it. In a bad way.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

A perfectly cute and moderately interesting dress teamed with the most boring shoes and hair imaginable. I am caught between IN and OUT on EH.

    • flamingoNW

Out. The details look like mistakes

    • Jessi03

She looks great, but I wish she’d worn a necklace. In!

    • jw_ny

it’s IN, but definitely not worthy of any kind of bickering on your end. It’s Friday…happy hour…open up a bottle of wine, get tipsy, get laid…yada yada yada…

    • sundaynightaddict

In, but she does color so well that B&W is just a little disappointing on her.

    • Imasewsure

In but it is dull (esp. with those shoes) … and I want this movie to bomb because they are messing with my childhood… there is no improving on the original Mr Peabody or Underdog or Bullwinkle etc. …

    • Betsy

I can see both points. It’s not very interesting but damn, she looks great.

    • SusiePamudji

In. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not that exciting either.

    • TheLaurenJean

Out. It’s dull, and the fit is doing weird things in the boobular region. Not her best.

    • Michael_Jones

I like the graphic black and white, but I don’t know about the lace. Out? (How’s that for assertive?)

    • TinaBelchersawkwardmoan

Sorry Daddy T, I’m siding with Daddy Lo.

    • Deborah Lipp

I like. T will get over it.

    • dumblesinwinter

OUT mostly because I can’t stop staring at the W on her stomach. All of the odd details are so focus pulling that I haven’t even looked at her face yet. That’s not really what you want.

    • somebody blonde

Out. Those hip cutouts ruin it.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

IN. It’s a sexy, chic look and she knows it.

    • CLoverleaf

OUT. The lacey stuff is weird.

    • Bozhi

Out. The dress is just not flattering.

    • Bert Keeter

Wrong shoe and color. Hair and makeup blah. Luv his Fall collection!

    • ovarB

To quote Rizzo “there are worse things I could do.” This dress is not one of those things.

    • empath

In, because she looks confident and is selling the look, but in mostly because Mr. Peabody and Sherman definitely approve… Mr. Peabody likes her boobs and Sherman likes her butt. Who am I to argue?

    • Sara__B

More in than out. It’s a nice enough dress, even though I don’t like the lacy cut-out bits, or her hair style and shoe choices.

    • Candigirl1968

The lace cut outs are strange, and combined with the white give the impression of lumpy hips – which I know neither Mann nor the model have. Other than that (which seems horrid), it’s ok.

    • trisker

IN. Like it on her and I agree it’s interesting.

    • LJCdoc

Out. totally snawning. Can barely stay awake to look at it. That could be Friday talking.

    • crash1212

IN! I could do without the lace cutouts, but I think this is the best she’s looked in quite some time. Beautiful hair and makeup and it’s one of the few times I can condone the deployment of white shoes. Nicely done!

    • E. D.

IN, but I hate the shoes.

    • Mothra

Out. The shoes are a snooze, the white looks like a fancy and stiff lobster bib and her smile looks fake. She’s an actress! Act like you want to be there.

    • majorbedhead

Those lace panels are making this an out for me. I hate them.

    • jilly_d

I’m with T here; it’s awfully boring, but not really ugly enough for an out, so I’ll give it a very tepid IN.

    • Lori

Extremely marginal in. Not because it’s actually interesting, but because the combination of Leslie Mann & Zuhair Murad could easily have been so, so much worse. Other than those stupid lace strips is fine and other than the white pumps she looks fine in it.

    • appliquer

Out – the lace cut outs make it look like she’s got a bulge on each hip.

    • ChelseaNH

Out. The lace bits dilute the graphic boldness. It’s not a bad dress, but it doesn’t do anything for her.

    • Libby

IN! Kewt! What pretty eyes she has. However, that pose is not kewt…

    • Bailey Debruynkops

her face looks gorgeous but the dress IS boring. OUT

    • Lilithcat

Horrid! The hip treatment makes the model look as though she has love handles.

    • msdamselfly

      OUT Snooze fest

    • Adriana

Those last strips bug but I think she looks GREAT. IN.

    • lundibleu

IN, it’s nice to see something a bit more interesting.

    • MaggieMae

She’s cute, but that dress is so OUT. Those hip panels do not flatter, and up on top, it looks like her slip is showing.

    • cocohall

It feels like we are being given a demo of how a foundation garment works. “We use these special panels at the hip to contour the body. The stretch lace allows for movement. We support the bust with a built-in bra that lifts and separates from the back and side.” No thank you. Leave the Fashion Science under wraps. Give me the illusion. Also, I find her annoying. Maybe it is just the voice? But a little of Ms Mann goes a long way for me.

    • Judy_J

From the waist up, I thought it was interesting and played off the cartoon aspect of the movie. Then I saw those awful lace inserts at the hip, and that ruined it for me. OUT.

    • Super_Red

I’m HATING the side panels… especially against the white background it creates the optical illusion of muffin top. Muffin Top is ALWAYS out. I like her makeup, though.

    • Karen

tough call, I think she looks good but overall it’s an OUT because it is quite boring.

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Swawning. O-U-T

    • RCH

    • Lisa_Co

Don’t like the clutch but otherwise it’s IN.

    • AmeliaEve

It started out as a god idea and then they screwed it up with those sheer bits. I’d like it if it were just bold color blocks, but the gauze and lace look like mistakes. OUT

    • KT

I’m actually going to go with neither. I wouldn’t say it’s so boring that I’m falling asleep, but I don’t necessary find it to be striking either. Honestly, the only thing I can see is that apparently her breasts have fangs now.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Interesting and it looks good on her, even if I’m not a fan of the lace panels. IN.

    • KendraMR

OUT. Those awful sheer side panels are giving the illusion that the dress is so tight that her hips are bulging. However, she is pulling the look off better than model who looks like she has a muffin top

    • TigerLaverada

I liked it until I got to the black lace inserts (die, black lace die!). She looks nice in general, but the dress is an OUT.

    • demidaemon

This is a kids movie, right? And she’s wearing a dress with lingerie inspired hip inserts? Um, no. It’s inappropriate and not all that interesting. OUT.

    • LaSylphide

Out. Mainly because I don’t like the way she is standing, which makes the dress look like it doesn’t fit. And I don’t like the expression on her face. And I don’t like the lace panels.

    • Julie Chase

It’s pretty and not too boring, but the lace panels are making me retch and I wish she had chosen a different colored shoe. But still. I have wine, so IN.

    • elirt

I’m Team Lorenzo – it’s IN! and interesting enough to post, especially since her choices aren’t usually this good.

    • Sara Hottman

The lace at the hips gives an illusion of a muffin top on both the model and Mz. Leslie. But she looks good after a few blinks. In.

    • andi56

Eh. Looks like an off-the-rack number from Macy’s “Graphic Club!” line.

    • Aurora Leigh

      I’m snawning. Therefore, OUT.

    • GeoDiva

Get rid of the lacy hip panel and its an IN. She is looking better the every year.

    • GillianHolroyd

It’s cracking me up that even the designer couldn’t manage an appropriate backdrop for this dress. The lace panels were a step too far but I like the dress otherwise. Tepid IN.

    • Boop

Is it my eyes, or does the lacy panel give the model the look of major saddlebags. In for Leslie – without the lace.

    • LeelaST

OUT. Don’t like it at all, those lace insets are cheap-looking. Would have preferred black pumps too.

    • marlie

It’s a lowercase ‘in.’ The dress is ok, but they really messed up with the styling… too casual hair, too bland makeup, and white Barbie shoes.

    • lulukittie

In– it fits her beautifully and coordinates with the backdrop. Just interesting enough for the occasion.

    • Blair Sylvester

In . Think it is interesting but still conventionally pretty

    • Deedles

Sorry if it has been said, but all I see is the ‘W’ in WTF.

    • Monabel

It’s the perkiness of her expression that scares me!

    • Becca M.

I would say no to black lace cut outs, two of my least favorite things, but she is working it. IN

    • SophieCollier

Well, Dads… it’s not boring but it’s bordering on ticky tacky with the lace insets. Also,if she is not pregnant, this dress is making her look so. If she IS pregnant, well congrats!

    • altalinda

The hip panels make her hips appear oddly shaped. Snawning.

    • BLauD

Bordering on too tricky, but an IN still. I waver.

    • Gatto Nero

Out — boring *and* too tricky (with the lace inserts, which are ugly and messing with her shape).

    • Judih1

Dress is okay, but it doesn’t seem like it is in her wheelhouse. Plus the shoes don’t work with it. OUT

    • allj

Yawn. Sorry, Les. You don’t look bad, but I don’t think it’s a look worth discussing. Hate the shoes.

    • Kelly

Out. Don’t like the shoes, don’t like the lace, don’t like that they changed Mr. Peabody’s accent.

    • SC_in_DC

Weird, but not even in an interesting weird way. Weird panels and angles for the sake of weird panels and angles without doing anything inspired. Just eh.

    • Alloy Jane

I like the dress. The hair and shoes are a big ol nuthin, but the dress, it’s nice. The side view is a bit off-putting though. Small “in” from the front, small “out” from the side. I guess that averages out to a “meh.”

Has anyone seen this? I did not like the previews much and I wonder how much of this I will be subjected to if my nephew decides he wants to see it.

    • sleepycat

Out! the sheer panels are just too off for the dress and occasion, otherwise sort of bland, kid premier-oriented dress.

    • d4divine

Out because of that weird cracked out grin on her face.

    • osiatynska

      Julianne Moore’s dress!

    • ChaquitaPhilly

The lace hip inserts are too much even on those tiny hips. OUT.

      • wisdomy

That was exactly my thought. Without the lace panel this is a pretty and flattering (if unremarkable) dress, but that insert is making even this extraordinarily slender woman look lumpy.

    • IraKi

IN Indeed it is not the most interesting of looks but it is not boring either. It is cute, venue appropriate and styled well. What else do you guys want?

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Sorry Tom, I’m with Uncle Lo – it’s bold, darling, BOLD!

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

In. I would have switched the shoe and clutch colors tho.

    • Reality TV Casting

      in i guessss

    • judybrowni

Needed a more fun shoe, but in.

    • sagecreek

Out for the gratuitous hip panels.

    • Megan Kennedy

Out. Those hip panels make her hips look so weird.

    • Joy Yeager

I am snawning with Tom, out

    • OhSheila

Out. The lace and the color blocking give her the illusion of bulging hip fat.

    • mjmiller77

      out. hip panels are weird.

    • KTBSN

      Weird detailing.Out.

      • lesmaha

        What you said. Out.

    • LambeeBaby

      Out. Boring. Snooze fest.

    • formerlyAnon

In. That questionable strip of possibly sheer hip lace gives this enough debatability (if that’s a word) that it can’t be dismissed as just another LBAWD.

Triple bonus points for use of “wont.”

    • Tom Markiewicz

      IN. Love it.

    • Jean Beaton Leavitt

It’s just a LBAWD that only looks good from the side and the shoes are just WWTF…white what the fuck.

    • Shawn EH

In! Best ever look for her. I think the black W on her midriff signals that she is secretly Wonder Woman.

    • Sara McDarby

      In! Love it!

    • lrhoff

Out for sure. That stuff on the hips is so not flattering….

    • Slanted & Enchanted

IN. Although LBAWD should definitely catch on. Surprised Project Runway didn’t use it in Season 3 with that one hilarious black and white cocktail dress challenge that brought back Vincent and Angela and had everyone stuffing their unused fabric into hastily made clutches.

    • mmebam

I’m with T. You have featured more interesting looks in whiteboard. #Out

    • warontara

Flat hair, love handle illusion, sad accessorizing, extreme toe cleavage and just a boring look overall…OUT

    • BayTampaBay

IN! simply because it is not awful enough to be Out. It is really not fair to punish boring but classy that could be mistaken for Target Diffusion Collection.. The lace inserts keep it from going into Target Diffusion Collection land completely.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Those cutouts give muffin top where I’m sure there is none. Out.

    • StarburstLady

I think it looks fine, and is also boring. I guess that’s OUT…

    • TAGinMO

I have to go with OUT, thanks solely to the side panels. Thanks to the way the white cuts in below them, she looks like she has a lace-covered muffin-top.

…which would be a great name for a band, but is not a good look on the RC.

    • Alyssa

In, but I’d like it better without the white & lace on the hips.

    • Danielle

Is the back to being Mann again? She sure dropped the Apatow fast.

    • FrigidDiva

Out. I can not get past those weirdly placed lace cut-out panels. They make her look like she’s got a spare tire and she most certainly does not.

    • peachy

OUT – yawning and snoring. those lace cutouts are … weird.

    • Jenna Marie

In. Despite the lace panels, she looks gorgeous.

IN. She looks great – healthy, good hair and makeup, the dress fits and is not scary.

I’ve got lower standards than you all.

Out. She’s got a vampire Siamese on her chest, and the tacky Victoria’s Secret lace-panty cut outs on the hip don’t strike me as appropriate for a kids’ movie carpet.

OUT. Black lace cutouts on the hips ruined it for me.

In because the the black and white graphics are really cute with the movie posters and she looks gorgeous. In but only from the neck up because the shoes are horrendous.

IN. I think she looks good and it’s a cute, sexy dress for a mom to wear at a kids movie premier. I would have changed the shoes to something a little more interesting, personally.

IN but vastly prefer the shoes on the model.

Well, someone knows she looks good.
