In or Out: Robert Downey, Jr.

Posted on July 22, 2011

These pictures have been sitting around for a couple of days now because we weren’t entirely sure how we wanted to approach this one:

Robert Downey Jr. attends the ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Los Angeles Premiere in clothes he found along the way.

We get it: He’s Robert Downey, Jr. He’s supposed to be irreverent and cheeky and unconventional. We’re fine with all of that. But does that automatically mean he has to wear something ugly? We were talking it over and we agreed that if he wanted to be a bit flip about it, he should have worn a suit with an Iron Man t-shirt. This? This is just an ugly leisure suit shirt paired with a conventional suit that’s a size too large for him and a mismatched tie. Nothing here looks good and nothing here looks cool enough to claim that the look is deliberate. It’s just badly mismatched clothes that don’t fit him. It’s a superhero film premiere and he’s not the star, we’re totally okay with a casual look in this case. He didn’t even have to wear a suit at all. So why go this route? When does it stop being ironic and become just plain bad?

IN! Lighten up, bitches! It’s FUN!

OUT! Little Tramp by way of Boogie Nights! I don’t think so!

The various Minion Opinions of yesterday shook out like this:

Jennifer Aniston: IN, but almost everyone hated her shoes.

Dominic Cooper: IN, but almost everyone agreed that he looked a little sleazy. You naughty girls.

RDJ’s sexiness makes this somehow work. IN.

    • Angela Green

    • Anonymous

      Agreed. RDJ is never OUT.

    • Anonymous

My first thought, before I even saw his outfit…He can do no wrong.

      • drdirection, you beat me to it! I was going to post the same exact thing. No lie. As soon as I saw RDJ’s name, I thought to myself, no matter what, he can do no wrong. And I stand by that statement.

      • Anonymous

        jumps on the bandwagon…

        • Me too. He’s one of a handful of men on the planet that can pull this off.

          • Anonymous

            Me, three.

          • I think we’re all on the RDJ wagon here.

    • Nicole Merrill

      Absolutely agreed.

    • Karen Philp

Agreed! He’s awesome. He’s in. And the colours in the tie work with the colours in the shirt.

      • Anonymous

YES!!! RDJ can do NO wrong. *sigh*

  • You work out and eat right to keep a good physique then you dress it in this? OUT

  • Anonymous

i get the feeling that if he wore a solid tie and kept the jacket closed, i would actually look pretty good.  of course he didn’t, but…

    • Agreed, with a black tie with subtle stripes it would look less like a bad mix.

  • Oof…he looks like a cheap impersonation of a Vegas crime boss.  OUT

  • I can’t get past the orthopedic shoes!  Why do men with so much money buy such shitty footwear?  For $300, I could go to any Nordstrom and buy a kick ass pair of black dress shoes.

    • Anonymous

Yikes, hadn’t even noticed the shoes, but sure enough, those are crazy ugly. And not even in an ironic-seeming way like the shirt. Why?

      • Anonymous

        Are they Earth Shoes?

    • Anonymous

I seriously assumed they were lifts b/c he’s pretty short.

      • I think they are Earth Shoes with lifts in them. Scary.

        • Anonymous

As big as they look, they could have a whole elevator hidden inside.  Monstrous.

  • Robert Sanchez

OUT for me. I could buy the shirt and tie with a suit that isn’t shiny and actually fit him, and better shoes. In fact, those shoes bring the whole look down a lot further.

  • Anonymous

IN. I love the shirt and tie and I think he looks hot. Rawr.

  • …. I kind of like it. It’s a way of doing the patriotic color thing without DOING the patriotic color thing. And the aesthetic of it reminds me of Iron Man. Not saying it goes, or it isn’t at least a little eye-searing, but I don’t think it looks all that random or utterly void of taste, either. I’d give him an in.

    • Anonymous

That’s what I thought of too! The shirt pattern reminded me of iron man!

  • Vaniljekjeks

In… it’s really ugly.  But he’s owning it.

    • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly. An In from me as well.

    • Anonymous

Yes. He’s grabbing ugly by the horns and it works. In!

  • Joyce VG

    I like it. IN.

  • Anonymous

    Love it! IN

  • Lena Bea

In, It’s fun and quirky and AWESOME!

  • The whole thing is a mess, but I have to give RDJ credit for at least taking some risk on the red carpet. With a little more coaching, he could be the male equivalent of Helena Bonham Carter!

  • Anonymous

From a distance, the tie doesn’t look too bad with the shirt.  The shiny, oversized suit shows all the wrinkles, though.  Out.

  • Anonymous

On anyone else this would be an out, but he is working it (except for the shoes, which remain questionable). I always love looking at this man, and this is no exception. IN.

  • Anonymous

He looks like an extra from that old TV show, “Vega$”.  It wasn’t a good look then, either.  OUT.

  • MilaXX

    IN, I can’t explain why cause it’s a little pimp-stastic, but I like it.

    • Alyson Lamble

It’s a LOT pimp-tastic.  That’s what is so great about it.  I love it on him.

      • Anonymous

        A pimp’s clothes would fit.

  • Anonymous

He’s so hot I’ve lost the ability to form a critical thought.  IN.

    • Anonymous

OK, since those of us floored by his hotness got called out in the next post, I’ll clarify.  This is one of those cases where the attitude makes the outfit.  So yes, the shirt is eye-searingly ugly, but it’s still an IN.

  • Barbara Bundy

I don’t think this is any less “just plain bad” than approximately 100% of menswear runway looks.

  • Anonymous

“clothes he found along the way.” hee

I wonder if it’d be better w/o the tie. Because if you put your finger over the tie in the close ups, the shirt’s sort of, er, interesting.

    Plus, he’s sexy. So.

  • Anonymous

I’m getting a 1970’s plain-clothes-cop-show vibe.  Streets of San Francisco, anyone?  Where’s Karl Malden?

  • Anonymous

Look at it this way – when was the last time you had to ponder a male star’s fashion to determine whether or not you like it?  I’m a huge proponent of men reclaiming the ability to do something fun and different with their fashion, so I give him an IN.

  • Completely disagree on this one. Other than the hem being too long, he looks terrific. IN.

  • To paraphrase Potter Stewart, quirky might be hard to define but I know it when I see it, and the outfit involved in this case is not that.

I love me some RDJr, but he is OUT.

  • I don’t hate the shirt and stuff. It just shouldn’t be paired with a shiny suit.

  • Hey, if dressing like this keeps him off of drugs, I say give the man an IN.

    • I dunno. I looked at this and thought, “ooh, did someone fall off the wagon???”

  • Anonymous

I look at him as the Helena Bonham Carter of menswear. Rules don’t really apply here.

    • Judy_J

    • No, that title belongs to Johnny Depp. RDJ isn’t quite there yet! He’s more like the Rita Wilson of menswear.

  • OMG, this is so O-U-T!  Separately, they’d work on his (except for the ill-fitting pants), but mixed all together it’s a mis-mash.  Even RDJr’s sexiness can’t make this an in.

  • Roz

Yeah, he’s IN. (But that T-shirt idea? Is quite upsetting. )

  • If you were pretending to be Tony Stark, I get the douchebag sunglasses. But OUT for the appalling shirt + tie, and RDJ you are short,  it’s alright, just get suits that fit.

  • Anonymous

“Tlo said: Robert Downey Jr. attends the ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ Los Angeles Premiere in clothes he found along the way.”

I was thinking he got that shirt from Tony Manero.

  • Anonymous

THe SHOES! they are hurting my eyes.

  • Anonymous

In. In the distant shots I thought he was being clever, flipping the color/pattern mix in the tie/shirt combination. A little less convinced when I saw the close up, but I guess it doesn’t bother me much, considering the fact that it piqued my interest. Suit? Meh. Long on the leg length, just right on the rise.

But why is he wearing Dansko Professionals?

  • Sara Morris

(sigh), out.  So sad, it could have been salvaged with some editing.  Props to him for being stylistically adventurous, though!

  • In.  Only because it’s Robert Downey Jr.  In every shot his face seems to say “Yes, I wore this. And?”

  • IN.  (It’s only fair to disclose that I wouldn’t care what he was wearing, he’d still be in)

I actually do have sound reasons for the “IN” though.

    1) The shirt and the tie actually kinda work together.  Yes, there’s a lot of conflict there in the patterns, but I like it for its unexpectedness.  And I like the 70’s graphic print.  I will, however, concede that the suit’s color is off for the look.  I understand what he was going for with the gray, but I don’t think it works with that brick color.

    2) An Iron Man tee with a suit would not work — a) because Captain America is an Avenger, and it would be seen as if he was trying to draw attention for the massive, 10-years in the making Avengers project, and b) it’s RDJ and he did shit like that 20 years ago when he was regularly wearing sneakers with suits.  There’s no maturation there.

    3) RDJ wears a LOT of suits — a LOT.  For him to show up on a red carpet in casual wear would have been a bit odd.  Especially for a movie that has been closely linked with his own beloved franchise.  Because of the intertwining of the various pre-Avengers movie, it’s almost like this is one of his own in terms of what is expected of his image for it.  Especially since he’s the only real name of any of the pre-Avengers  (excepting Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, because while people know Ruffalo, they don’t know him AS Hulk) stars.

    4) And he gets bonus points for being groomed and dressed like a professional instead of a hobo.

  • Anonymous

He looks a little rumpled, but I’ve got to say I just love that shirt. So 70s without the Qiana. Also, he’s starting to look like Al Pacino (the Michael Corleone years). IN.

  • I don’t really mind the suit but the shirt, tie, and… that…..some sort of platform corrective boot he’s wearing?! OUT.

  • In, he’s just a bit goofy.

  • I kind of like it.  Besides, he’s sexy as hell.  IN.

  • Maddy B

    I True, a bit odd…but IN  & HOT!

  • I think the shirt/tie could have worked because the colors match and the small print/large print combination (that Tim, or was it Clinton?, told me was how to match patterns) works, but I think the facial hair, the shininess of the suit, the loose tie and the relatively poor fit of the suit detracts from the cheekiness of the shirt and tie.

But I agree with everyone that by virtue of it being RDJ it’s always an IN because he’s RDJ and he’s thriving and that just makes my 80s girl heart so happy.

    • MilaXX

YES! Less than Zero was on a few days ago and darned if I didn’t have to stop and watch.

  • Anonymous

IN. Certain elements are troublesome (those shoes!) but all in all, I like the quirkiness.

  • Judy_J

He’s Robert Frickin’ Downey Jr, for cryin’ out loud!  He could show up in a burlap sack and be sexy as hell.  I say IN!

  • That’s a really ugly tie, and it’s tied poorly, to boot.

  • Weird and ugly. OUT!

  • Anonymous

IN!  Except for the fit on the pants, I think he looks cute:)

  • Anonymous

Yes, it’s ugly, but it’s RD Jr.  IN.

  • Anonymous

I really like the shirt/tie combo, but I think it works better without the jacket than with it.  With just a small amount showing through the closed jacket, it’s too much at one time.  Nevertheless, I’m calling this an IN.

  • But! But! Look at that attitude!  His face screams “I am a MAN in a VERY SHINY SUIT.”  I think he looks terrible, but I have to love the look anyway.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

OUT. He reeks of lounge lizard. What’s with the shiny suits lately? I really loathe them.

  • Anonymous

Out. I don’t mind the shirt but not with the suit and the tie. Trying too hard to be too cool for school.

  • Adella Thompson

The man could basically wear a Girlscout outfit and ugs and be IN for me. It almost works, if just one thing were tweaked. Could be a number of “one things”really, although my best advice would be to ditch the shirt, tie, and uh jacket. It’s summer right?

  • Anonymous

Out. I appreciate a guy trying to have a little sartorial fun, but this isn’t working. I like shiny suits, but they have to be extremely well tailored and pressed to within an inch of their lives to really look good. So, this ain’t doing it for me.

  • He’s beautiful and perfect and Tony Stark. IN.

  • Anonymous

IN.  I might question the shoe choice, but the man is in.  And I think you guys know it and you question the look because you are jealous.

He has pushed the boundaries just enough.  And seriously none of the women are pushing anything except for a damn nude pump.

  • margaret meyers

In.  I hate the shirt but I love the suit and tie. That’s a great suit.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

  • In. He’s working it. And I think I could dig the shirt with a solid colored tie.

  • The sad thing is.. The only thing that offends me is the shoes. They look so.. Bulky.

    I think I need help.

  • Susan Foster

    IN.  I like the shirt.

  • Shiny suits should be burned on sight.

  • Anonymous

    He’s so hot. He’s in. I can’t concentrate now. Oh my…

  • Elena

At first I was repulsed, but I actually kind if like it. In.

  • Haley Buchanan

IN – It suits him and his persona to a T.  If Helena Bonham Carter gets an in for her wacky red carpet get-ups, RDJ surely get’s an IN for this!

  • Anonymous

I can’t help it– I love RDJ. IN, but I wish his suit was less shiny. I like the kooky mix of shirt and tie patterns.

  • In.

  • Terence Ng

I like something different, but the clashing patterns and fugly color coordination is just an eye sore. It reeks of “Hi I’m Marv, and I’ll be filming/directing you in this porno that takes place in my apartment.” OUT.

  • dickinson-julie

On anyone else this could be a strong out, but the man transcends the clothes.  IN.

  • Anonymous

    From the neck up? IN.
From the neck down – hell to the OUT

  • IN– its Robert Downey, Jr.  I’d no sooner give him an out than I’d give Iman an out.  Not his best look, not his worst.  But it’s still Robert Downey Jr.

  • Anonymous

The shirt is kind of funky/cool, but the tie, shiny suit, sunglasses and dye job just make this non-aging-gracefully celeb a douche….

why, I’m even thinking his face is looking tauter than usual…

  • Aly Light

OUT! As in, “Please take it out now!”

  • Amazing. IN

  • The look works for me.  IN, as long as there are no more photos with hands in pockets.

  • Anonymous

I actually love this, and think it suits his personality to a T.  IN!

  • Anonymous

IN. As I said yesterday, I look at him and want to bang him, so it’s an IN.

Whatever, it’s not high fashion. He’s having fun and is handsome. Haters to the left.

  • Anonymous

Yes, there are fit and shine issues, but he looks cool!  Cool and just enough under the sleazy line to be doable(in the I’d “do” him sense).

  • It’s easier to imagine him naked when he wears ugly clothes.

    • Anonymous

      ^ This

  • Wow, aside form the orthopedic nurse shoes, I like this look on him.

  • He can wear whatever he damn well pleases as long as he shows up. and this is somehow so “him”. IN.

  • Anonymous

    He’s Robert Downey Jr.  IN.

  • I like everything except the wrinkly, too-long, too-shiny pants. IN because I do like him.

  • Anonymous

Out but major props for going this way.

  • Anonymous

  • This is completely tight butthole.  IN.  Forever.

  • AWStevens

Robert Downy Jr is very comfortable in his manhood.  You need to re-watch the movie BACK TO SCHOOL because he’s always been a bit… edgy/not sober.  I am assuming he is sober in this photo.  Nice bulge by the way…  IN because I just love the cheeky bastard…

  • Anonymous

I like him and think he’s cute as hell but he’s still OUT. This screams lounge lizard.

  • Anonymous

The suit is too shiny.  The shoes are very old man orthopedic,  I really like the shirt but what was he thinking pairing it with that tie? And there’s an overall smarmy vibe about the entire outfit.

However, it fawking Robert Downey Jr.  Good googly moogly he’s fine.  He does more than just make my pants move.

  • Anonymous

    OUT.  Scary.

  • Rand Ortega

All that’s missing are the Flagg Bros. platforms & the felt hat w/ the feather. Love me some RDJ, but this is just greazy lookin’. No style, no pinache. Sloppy & haphazard.
    (God, that HURT!)

  • Anonymous

Yuck!  OUT!!!  His schitck is tired.  Time to fall off the wagon.  Again.

  • Anonymous

I think the 70’s want that shirt back.  Shiny, wrinkly suit, WTF shoes… sigh.  Could have done sooo much better.  OUT.

  • Dylan Bradford

    Straight up Pimp-tastic. In.

  • Dylan Bradford

    Straight up Pimp-tastic. In.

  • All For You Sophia

It’s RDJ. He can wear rubbish and stll look hot hot hot!!! IN!

  • Erika Shor

I’ve been staying away from these but I gotta weigh in on this one. So totally IN.

  • Jeremy Rueger

    total IN.

  • Anonymous

    IN cant help myself

  • Out.

  • I also give this an IN.

  • Anonymous

  • up with pod people
  • IN! Lighten up, bitches! It’s FUN!

  • Anonymous

At first I was going to give it an out… but the more I looked at it, the more I admired his daring-ness and confidence. IN

  • I love this look!  Irreverent?  Yes.  Quirky?  Yes.  Pure RDJr?  Absolutely!  IN!

  • Anonymous

Not in love with the shoes, but otherwise he gets an IN from me. The man could work a burlap sack.

  • Anonymous

He’s the only Republican in the world I love, but he looks like crap on crackers here. Jeez, RDJ! Go home and let your wife dress you!

  • Anonymous

    So IN. He works it.

  • Anonymous

Out. There is no saving that fugly shirt.

  • Anonymous

Conflicted… I find him to be quite pretty but I also get a strong scent of douchebag….. and this outfit does nothing to help his case.

  • IN! And ON and UNDER too ; ) The man is gorgeous.

  • Michelle Prahl

I kind of love it. IN!

  • Anonymous

In!  I like the shirt and tie together.  Very Mondo.

  • Jay

…I actually kind of love it on him. I think he’s working it. IN.

  • I like it. And I hate that I like it.
It looks like someone designed it on the Sims.

  • Anonymous

Conflicted!   Inclined to say “in” because he’s RDJ and he’s still coloring inside the RDJ lines (so I don’t really get T Lo’s dudgeon) . . . but I’m tiring of him, so part of me wants to say “not again” . . . so maybe something like “in” from a distance?   (which I realize barely makes sense, but it’s all I’m willing to invest in it — hah)

  • Please stop bashing my husband.  RDJ is always in. Even if he is (preferably) naked.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

IN.  And obviously he’s just going in character as Tony Stark.

  • Anonymous

IN…but I have a crush on him so I am biased

  • Anonymous

OUT. He looks douchey and sleazy and tacky and… oh, RDJ. Please do better next time.

  • Anonymous

I think Adam Ant said it best; he don’t follow fashions – that would be a joke! You know he’s gonna set them, set them – so everyone can take note, take note!

  • All he needs are some pinky rings and a leathery tan and the look will be complete.  I love you, RDJ, but OUT!

  • HE is Robert Downey Jr. He conquered the drug sirens by out-singing them, he’s a sex god, and if he showed up in a clown suit and a donut for a nose ring, it would be IN, baby, IN!

  • no.

  • Anonymous

What’s that, Robert Downey Jr? I can’t hear you. Your shirt is too loud! **OUT**  Let’s put Quiana shirts back where they belong…  which is the seventies.

    • qiana: as in qantas. remember.

      • Anonymous

For those of us old enough to remember.

        • Anonymous

Thanks for the correction!  I was born in ’72.  I just have vague memories of going to church in butt ugly shirts similar to RDJr’s.

  • Anonymous

    IN- the man is infallable.

  • Maria Rosenfire

    OUT. What a colossal arse.

  • oh, i like him, i like his father, i like that they made someone so little a superhero, & i even like his clothes here. theyre deliberate, they match in their own way. the shirt tie combo would be nicer in a different colorway, but then they would probably just scream {particularly w/ the shiny grey}. i am trying, but failing, to come up w/ a better outfit using many of the same elements. if it helps, the reason i’m failing is more likely cos i’ve been sick & exhausted rather than that this is a wonderful outfit but, so help me, it sure beats–i think it was an arquette who wore the unfortunate trying to be post-ramones but looking more post-knack filtered thru justin bieber sneakers/suspenders ensemble? i mean, we have that to compare w/ this.

  • Only RDJ can pull off something so bad. Confidence…confidence…
It doesn’t really matter, though. We still love him…right?

  • Anonymous

yes he looks douchey but it’s RDJr so IN by default…..

  • aussiegal77

I can’t get behind this.  OUT.

  • It was an in for me until I saw the shoes…OUT. Are those clogs?

  • OUT.  Those shoes would probably look good with something else, They are the only part that can be salvaged from that “outfit.”

  • Anonymous

IN. Very irreverent. Very fun. Very, very sexy.  Perfect combo for RDJ on the RC. And yes, I’m fanning myself a little.

  • Patricia Biswanger

  • Aw c’mon… never in a menswear critique do we get the blahblah about nude shoes or lace or asymetrical hemlines or age-appropriate.  Men get The Jacket, The Slacks, The Shirt, and sometimes The Tie. Heaven forbid someone shake that up now and then.  And really – is this Leighton Meester bad?  No.  Is it Christina Aguilera bad?  No. Is it maybe Eva Mendes having fun with her stylist bad?  Maybe.  Give the guys a break for trying to have some fun now and then.  And yes, RD2 is way beyond all this in/out kerfuffel.  Big screaming in-a-heartbeat IN.

  • Anonymous

Hmm. I like that he’s trying something away from the usual staid and boring male red carpet look, but, on the other hand, all these patterns and textures are competing with each other. A qualified OUT, I think.

  • In. But he’d probably more of an IN!!! if the suit wasn’t shiney.

  • OUT.
He just looks so low rent pimp-daddy. I feel like he’s wearing too much cologne and he’s not using any gel, his hair’s just sweaty enough to do that and I really wouldn’t want to be trapped in an elevator with him.

  • jmoss1

It’s all fairly hideous but good from the neck up.

  • Anonymous

  • I never commented on In our Out but I feel compelled to do so in this occassion just because is RDJ. He is HOT, no matter what he wears. Like TLO always say, it’s not so much about the clothes, but the attitude of the person that wears them. Well, to me he is ALL attitude. Love him. Of course this means he is IN.

  • Anonymous

Out. (Can’t be bothered to comment more on that :-))

  • I really *want* to hate it, but…I somehow can’t. I feel compelled to vote IN.

    • Anonymous

I’m with you, Melissa.  I know that the right thing to do would be to hate it–even if just to give credit to TLo for “Little Tramp via Boogie Nights”–but I can’t.  It’s Robert Downey, Jr., and I confess undying love for him. I see him in that disco shirt and shiny suit, which might be appalling on lesser mortals, but somehow work for Downey. It’s just who he is. He has the attitude to carry it off without seeing like an asshole. Which is why I love him.

And say what you will about his shoes, at least they’re shined and don’t look as if they’d been worn on a two-week trek through the Gobi Desert. Which seems to be the fashion among too many Hollywood men.

      Long story short:  IN!

      • Yes, just to reiterate since voting was left open… It has nothing to do with how I feel about RDJ himself. He is somehow making this work, even though intellectually I wouldn’t like it.

  • Saoirse Lee

The shooooshah! They are disgusting beyond belief, like little Lego man shoes.

    • margaret meyers

yeah, he needed a sharp-looking shoe with this look, not something he got off a Hummel figurine.

  • IN…it’s very intentional and consistent. He looks very put together in a sleazy way. It’s no worse than Helena Bonham Carter and her “What the hell” manner of dressing. Downey dresses like a caricature because he IS a caricature.

  • Anonymous

Out.  The shirt with the suit might pass for unconventional and fun, but the tie just breaks it up too much.

  • Anonymous

I didn’t even know one could still get shirts like that. Haven’t seen one in almost 40 years.

  • margaret meyers

So the Men’s Looks of Summer is either the slim-fitted, shiney suit with gaudy accessories  (Downey, Cooper, Gosling) or
worn, too-casual separates in muddy tones with scuffed shoes and neck beards (Timberlake, LaBeouf).  Both are screaming “You’re not the BOSS of ME!”

  • Sorry, it’s working for me. And the tie is bad up close, but it’s fine from farther away. IN.

  • Anonymous

Are you kidding? Of course he’s IN!

  • Anonymous

The question I thought of immediately: Is RDJ the guy he plays in Iron Man, or is Iron Man really RDJ? Whatever, I still catch the irony and it makes me smile. IN

  • I disagree.  He werks this look!

  • Anonymous

I think if the suit had not been shiny and a bit darker gray, he would have looked perfect.  I’m kinda digging the wack-a-doo shirt and tie combo.

  • Dear TLo, this was your “pretty for the weekend,” right?

  • Anonymous

He’s in danger of becoming his generation’s Tony Curtis.

  • Courtney Hellams

IN! It’s RDJ, quite frankly, fashion rules don’t apply to him.

  • Anonymous

personally I just find the HOOTERS sign in the background hilarious, especially with RDJ’s track record

  • Trinh D.

Must be cold and distant. Must be cold and distant. Must be cold and distant.

Okay, I like the outfit sans the shoes and shirt. So, it’s an out. I kinda like him as an actor but my bf loooooves him. It’s weird. It’s almost border lining obsession.

  • This guy is fucking sleazy and if he weren’t famous you would all be saying he looks like rapist.

  • Liana Brooks

The jacket looks good on him. The color suits him. As with 99.9% of males his pants are a mess.

The pink… it’s close, really it is. The look almost works. At a distance, when the tie is a solid color, I’d give it a pass. Up close? I don’t love it so much.

    Just this side of OUT.

  • G

RDJ’s sexiness does not excuse him or make this a better look.  OUT

  • out out out. too shiny. too ugly.

  • Anonymous

Geuh, no, those shoes. I can forgive so much, but not those hiddy elevator shoes. They make him look short and stubby.

  • Anonymous

I stand by what I said to begin with – he makes it work due to his attitude. I like the combination of prints and colors and I don’t think the suit is too shiny. Plus, there’s a bit of a double standard going on with you T&LO. You unabashedly love HBC for her wacky clothing choices because she has the personality to sell them… why won’t you let us have our love of RDJ and his personality to sell this outfit?

  • Anonymous

    A small:  out.

He’s no Iman & the shoes are hideous

  • lthrwrstlr

out,  that tie/shirt combo is to hiddy

  • Anonymous

If this were a serious movie premiere, I’d go for an out.

But it’s a flippin’ comic book movie premiere so I’m inclined to give the guy a bit of slack, as this does have bit of cheeky attitude that is perhaps appropriate for such an event.

  • Anonymous

Oh, RDJ, even YOU can’t pull this off.

  • He’s dressed like a 1979 Tonight Show guest.  That’s a compliment.

Though I am not a fan of the shirt, I’m giving him an IN, because he’s been trending towards a still-evolving look.  I’m waiting to see what happens.

  • Anonymous

Its RDJ, would you expect anything less? IN

  • Chantelle James

OUT. I love the shirt, but not paired with that tie, that suit, or those shoes. While the colours in the tie actually pick up the colours in the shirt, the scale of the pattern doesn’t work. Wearing a suit that’s too big looks sloppy, not sexy, and the shine doesn’t work with the shirt or the tie. And what’s with those shoes? Hideous.

He’s undeniably a hot, sexy man. Too bad about the clothes.

  • Anonymous

So that my previous comment will not be tossed out, TLo, please note: I am being cold now. Cold. A cold and distant bitter kitten. Are you ready?

IN! Even though I loathe and despise and cannot stand the sight of him, Mr. Downey, Jr., looks like exactly who he is, and that’s a good thing.

  • Anonymous

Robert has looked better than this no matter how sexy he is I will not except this. OUT

  • Yep, In.  He’s having fun, and I want to have fun WITH him.

  • Anonymous

The shirt is hilariously ugly. And he has a goatee, which he totally pulls off without looking like a douchebag. Robert Downey, Jr. is so cool he went past OUT and headed straight back to IN. He’s so IN it hurts.

  • Anonymous

IN plus for pulling this off!

  • Cheri Lee

IN!  I don’t know how I feel about the shoes though.

  • I actually like it.

  • Still better than the suits he wore in Iron Man 2. What was up with those?

  • Out, sorry my love.

  • I affirm myself to be the bitterest of kittens to see RDJ in this getup. His outfit looks so slick that all it brings to mind is some sort of adult slip-n-slide. It’s got “IN” potential but unfortunately slides “OUT.”

  • Anonymous

Y’know that tired old saying about how An Unattractive Girl can look raging hot if she’s confident in how she looks and nurtures a certain gleeful aura of Don’t Much Give A Damn?

    It’s true.

And it’s what Robert Downey Jr is doing in these photos. The suit’s a clashing and slightly tawdry mess, it’s seventies-pink and shiny-grey and the sunglasses are definitively Ordinary, but –

It doesn’t even matter. 🙂 He looks blazingly fantastic, because he’s standing there in the middle of the carpet being blazingly fantastic.

  • Anonymous

In IN IN – RDJ is always IN. He can’t do worng.

  • Anonymous

Shiny suit and fugly shirt…..nothing good about it.

  • Anonymous

    In, of course.

  • akprincess72

    Tacky, tacky, tacky.  OUT

  • Anonymous

I was gonna say…I love RDJ and he can do no wrong…but, seriously. This is just awful on every single level. Awful. Seriously. OUT.

  • Out because of fit.

It isn’t my thing but the pairing almost works and the individual pieces are interesting.

However, he is not some hunk-of-the-month brat who is too scared to ask for alterations lest he be thrown back into whatever catalog model pit out of which he recently slithered.

RDJ must own designer suits…and I doubt that, if it is borrowed, a fashion house said:

“No. No alterations. The look we are going for is a pathetic 16 year old who, in a doomed attempt to impress a freshman on a first date, borrowed his Dad’s suit, threw it on over a $5 thrift store shirt he bought in a failed effort to play hipster, put it on in the dark, and then was forced by the most expensive restaurant in his backwater town to wear the loaner tie, on which he will no doubt spill some glorified ketchup the chef passes off as “marynary” sauce.

  • Christine Campbell

I don’t know – I feel like he’s pulling this off.  The jacket does seem a skosh too big, but he is certainly owning this look.  I’m going to have to go with IN on this one.

  • Anonymous

Out.  This is my grandfather’s going out to the corner bar look — right down to the shiny suit & mismatched shirt/tie  Didn’t look good on gramps doesn’t look good on RDJ no matter how awesomely kewl he is supposed to be.

…on second thought… gramps had better looking shoes.

  • Anonymous

Sexy until the ankles, and then… probably unable to hold his pee on a cross country flight

  • Judy_J

Based on the admonition posted by TLo, I will defend my IN call for RDJ.  He’s totally rocking the pimptastic look.  I love the bold print of the shirt, and the tie is in the same color family with a tiny print, and I think it works.  I will give him a point or two off for the tie not being knotted properly, and for the length of the trousers.  Love his hair and sunglasses, and I even like the goatee.  I’m neutral on the shoes.  If only I could see his socks…..

  • Anonymous

The whole look is out because of the sloppy pants & clunker shoes, but he does look cute & cocky.

  • Anonymous

IN. I’m with the crowd who doesn’t care what he wears. He’s RDJr, and he’s perpetually in.

  • Anonymous

Look, I seriously love this guy, but the pants alone…they’re just so bad.  No, no, I can’t.

  • AWStevens

Still IN.  I am a bitter kitten.  I AM!  But I also like his outfit.  His face is all “too cool for school” and I love it.  I like the shiny silver/gray against the pink/white/black shirt and dizzy red and white tie.  The hem on the pants need work and I am sure RDJ is wearing man clogs.  Still IN!

  • what is cute when you are 25 is just sad when you are in your 40s. OUT

  • Out. Not sexy. I don’t care who he is, he’s not getting a pass from me. He just looks silly.

  • IN. I like it. It has a 60s Op-Art quality with the tie seeming like a small scale version of the shirt. It would work better if the suit were black or maybe dark brown. And matte, probably. But I still like it.

  • Anonymous

    Taking a 2nd look…nope…still OUT!

  • p. clementine

IN, mostly because despite the terrible pattern of his shirt, I am still focused on his face. :/ Truth, TLo.

  • he can play the rdj card for the jacket, pants, and even that shirt. but those shoes are terrible and look like something my 3rd grade teacher wore because she had to work on her feet all day

  • Ah, giveittuuem. The fit is a problem, absolutely. Frankly, I like the shirt/tie combo and he is sassing it to hell and back. IN with provisions.

  • It’s pretty awful, but he sort of pulls it off. A warped IN.

  • Tania Skevos

Love it. The shirt especially. But the shoes and thin moustache are really bad.

  • Anonymous

It must be the heat but I’m digging the shirt and tie.  The pants are an ill fitting shiny mess but he’s working it, in a way that guy actors don’t normally seem to do so IN.

  • Anonymous

He makes it all work, mainly because he JUST DOESN’T CARE. I have to admire that. In.

    • Anonymous

See, I love him but the look is so contrived that to me it screams that he most certainly does care. Not sure about what, exactly, but it’s most definitely not a “I just don’t care” vibe.

  • Out for the lifts alone.

  • I don’t mind the shirt, I don’t mind the tie, but the whole thing is a mess that looks hastily put together. OUT.

  • Shiny, pink, and gray. Outster.

  • Anonymous

IN. While the best thing he’s wearing is his attitude, obviously the bitter kittens can’t stop looking at him. If Johnny Depp and Robert Downey Jr are both vying for the Male Helena Bonham Carter title, for the moment, RDJ has pulled ahead in the polls. Johnny’s been doing the same variation for way too long. I call for a true head-to-head retrospective of these two guys, a fashion cage match.

  • Hmm. I don’t love the shiny suit trend, but he does look good here. And I like that he went a little out there with the shirt. IN.

  • He is not pulling this off, THOUGH HE SHOULD TAKE IT OFF.

Okay the man is hot, but that does not excuse the eye-searing shirt, combined with that tie. Either one on its own would have leaned towards an out (the tie less so, but still), combined they just make my eyes bleed. Throw in that shiny, wrinkly suit, the douchebag glasses, the NEED TO HEM YOUR PANTS situation and the only conclusion is: BITCH you be out.

  • Anonymous

It’s definitely a case of ugly-pretty. I don’t know why but I can’t help to look at all the pieces separetelly, find each of them pretty ugly (that tie !!! that shirt !!! My father had a tie with that shirt’s exact pattern of printed on it back in the 80’s) and finally find him looking damn good.
To bad the pants are wrinkled because he is working the overall look.

  • In! It’s boogie night, folks!

  • Anonymous

I can almost get behind this as I scroll downward, until I get a good look at the pants. Hideous. Out.

  • He is most definitely IN!  It’s an example of power clashing.

  • Anonymous

It’s very Robert Evans/Bob Goulet to me. But yet, I might still like it. I guess that’s just RDJ cheeky effect at work.

  • Jay

Sorry, T Lo, but this still gets an IN from me! It’s definitely an unconventional look, but damn if he isn’t working it like it owes him money. Sometimes, a guy really CAN do no wrong.

  • Anonymous

I know you would love it if I changed my mind, but I still give this an IN.

As someone else said, he’s working it like it owes him money.  Yes, it could have been a little neater, but in a very odd way, it totally works on him.  His personality and attitude is totally selling this.

  • Anonymous

Out. It would take almost less than zero effort for him to look outstanding and he chooses not to go that route, very strange.

  • If the suit fit him well, this would be in.  The bad fit makes it OUT.

  • Anonymous

At first glance at the key photo I wondered why you guys were doing a piece on Marc Anthony.  Sorry, Robert.  That said, YIKES!  Sorry, Robert, again – for your questionable fashion sense.

On a completely unrelated note to go along with my Sunday ADD, can’t wait for a Pairs Edition opportunity with Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz.  See, told you it was completely unrelated.

  • Anonymous

OUT OUT OUT OUT!  I loves me some RDjr, but this is just horrifying.

There is never any reason to wear mauve.  There is no excuse for the fit on those pants.  And there is no galaxy in which those shoes look good.

  • He’s IN because he’s RDJ until my attention arrives at the crotchal area and the shoes, and then I sob,and say OUT.

  • He’s OUT like Pluto.

  • Anonymous

I actually like the shirt but I wish the suit was a hair darker, fit a hair better, and that the tie had picked up the cool tone in the shirt rather than the warm. The pattern in the shirt is so strong the tie should have been solid.

  • Brendan Foehr

  • IN. The man could werq a burlap sack.

  • Anonymous

ICK. Looks like someone has been shopping at MACY’S again. Sexy? In which galaxy?

  • The attitude is everything. I don’t dig the pattern on the shirt, but he’s pulling it off. (I wish he’d literally pull it off – he revs my engine). Sorry,  Daddies – he’s IN.

  • I like it. It’s fun.

  • Monica Hjort

IN – The grey looks Hot 😀

  • OUT! I liked him better after all his problems when he had a tiny bit of humility and was trying to prove he still could act. This is as ugly as his ego is huge.

  • In – he’s darling

  • Alyssa Stanfield

    Only because he’s RDJ…IN

  • Anonymous

This is what you call WERQing it. In.

  • Scott Hester-Johnson

Is that shirt Qiana? It looks like Qiana.

  • Shawn Hill

    IN! Lighten up, bitches.

  • That shirt makes me seasick.  OUT

  • Anonymous

Too shiny. He doesn’t look like his sexy self to me. He’s Out.

  • Anonymous

    I love it. IN

  • Anonymous

looking a wee bit like Marc Anthony. sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze-y

  • Anonymous

Out!  With a tie that actually coordinated, he could have pulled it off, though.

  • Lisa

I’d say IN.  Look, it’s quirky and odd, but it’s neat, clean and fits him well.  Can’t argue with that.

  • Anonymous

RDJ or Tony Stark?  Either way, sexy.  Fun.  IN.

  • Anonymous

The shirt and tie are great! It’s the ill cut suit that’s awful.

    And, that (lack) of hem…

  • Anonymous

Also, he doesn’t know how to make a nice  knot.

  • K S

IN, no question about it. 1-he’s fucking Robert Downey Jr. 2- He’s OWNING everything about that.

  • Anonymous

Hmm. Something about this look makes me want to watch A Scanner Darkly again…

  • OUT.  He should have dressed like Tony Stark attending an awards ceremony for Captain America.  The one time when a bottle of Jack is an appropriate accessory and he wasted the opportunity.

  • Does anyone actually knows any information about the origin of his shirt? Really need to know!

  • RDJ is so hot, I would love to taste his seed!

  • frankystein123

IN, fierce as shit I have to say.
