Yea or Nay: Prada ‘Madras’ Bag

Posted on June 11, 2011

So we’re browsing through the celebrity-stalking parts of the internet when we stumble upon this shot of Nicole Kidman at LAX sporting one of the Madras bags from the Prada spring 2011 collection.

And we thought, “Hey, those bags have been hanging off quite a few celebrity arms lately, haven’t they?”

Sienna Miller, Uma Thurman, Jessica Alba

Answer: They have. So our question to you, our beloved minions, on this dreary, muggy, lazy Saturday, is this:

  • Hellz yea

  • It looks like something a ten year old could make in scouts.

    • Anonymous

Worse, it looks like something my nine year old would make in Scouts. Good god.

    • From candy wrappers.

    • YES. it looks like it was made out of lanyard.

    • it does look like it’s made out of that camp lanyard stuff…

  • Anonymous

Nay…that color combo is just too Halloween for me.

    • AC

      Exactly my thought. Nay.

    • Anonymous

Absolutely Nay. Looks like it should have a jack-o-lantern face carved in it.

    • My thought too!

  • Sara__B

Nay. They look too late-60s-Hippie-Craft-Fair to me.

    • D J

Seeing them in a Prada store, where everything is so clean and pristine, and then seeing Hippie-Craft-Fair, they really do look horrible. Even in Green/Blue, they just look bad.

  • Anonymous

A million trendy, fabulously wealthy celebrities can’t be wrong, can they?  Uh YES they can!  That bag is dog ugly.  My dog is even too good for that bag.

  • Karen O’Hara

    Hell yea!

  • I’m torn. I like the shapes and little details, but I hate the weave. If they had done it in different colors than ones that make me think of Halloween, maybe I would love it more. Out.

  • I think I made that in summer camp.  I also made co-ordinating friendship bracelets.

  • Danny Maza

Mapuche people does best bags than those… NAY!

  • Bobbi Green

I think its ugly and looks cheap, although I’m sure it isn’t.

  • Big yea, but no chance that I’m going to spend more than I did on my first car for a handbag.

  • Megan Burgess

No me gusta. But then I don’t care for orange or the weaving.

  • Nay.

Never liked those wicker-style woven leather strips bags — that’s gonna snag on something eventually. And orange and black? Ugh.

    Summer camp craft project.

  • Nay. Looks like something I made in girl scouts. All they need  is a matching lanyard.

  • Nay. Looks like something I made in girl scouts. All they need  is a matching lanyard.

  • Yuck. They look like a craft project close up and a bit mucky from afar. Lose-lose.

  • Yuck. They look like a craft project close up and a bit mucky from afar. Lose-lose.

  • Anonymous

I like the top one only. But what is that black thingie around the handle? Some kind of security device?

  • Nay.  It looks like a arts and crafts project gone wrong.

  • Nay.  It looks like a arts and crafts project gone wrong.

  • Anonymous

i only like the last one, the others seem like they are awkward sizes… Uma looks like she’s carrying a picnic basket, and Sienna look like she’s carrying a briefcase.
the orange is just too much… its like someone skinned tony the tiger.

  • I like the bones of some of them, and the colors could work, but they look sloppily executed, which frankly is not what I’m paying for when I pay for Prada.

  • Anonymous

Nay. It looks like something you’d make with a kit from Hobby Lobby.

  • Anonymous

I think it’s cute but it looks a little sloppy… maybe it’s one of those things you have to see in person.

  • Anonymous

  • kerry dee

everyone says it looks like arts and crafts  at summer camp, but what’s so wrong with that? it’s playful and youthful then.  i love the bag. yay all the way.

    • Anonymous

      Totally agree!

  • Anonymous

    and ugh.

  • MilaXX

Yea. I wouldn’t carry the middle one (too big), but feel free to gift either the first or the third.

  • yes.

  • turnerp95

  • Anonymous

When did Prada start doing lanyards?

  • Anonymous

Yea! It would be great for taking to SF Giants’ least until someone spills beer all over it.

    • Anonymous

giants fans try not to waste the beer…and yeah its work for a giants game then the fun muni ride home…other than that blech…why orange and black for spring?  if i had one I would slap a big GIANTS logo on it

  • Anonymous

I don’t like orange…but if the color combos were different, a big YAY.  I’ve always loved woven leather.

    • Anonymous

They are offered in all black and black/brown combo as well on the Prada e-store.  Zoom in on the photos there and you will see they are actually very, very well made, not craft project at all.  Interesting, they don’t have this combo on the e-store, maybe boutique only?

  • NO NO NO NO.  It looks like it’s made out of lanyard material.  UG-LY

  • Anonymous

YEA!!! I particularly like the first one. The rectangular one gets a little crafty, but I like the juxtaposition of the really classic tailored shape with the unconventional material. Me likes.

  • Kathryn Perry Hopkins

    Nay.  That bag is hiddy.

  • Anonymous

no! They make me think of that one chain-smoking aunt with the really heavy curtains and upholstery from the 70s and everything just reeks of cigarette smoke.

  • Anonymous

I like it, but having said that, for the mere mortals among us who don’t have an unlimited budget for designer wares, something more classic and neutral would be a much better choice.

  • Anonymous

SUPER YEA!!! the topmost one is my dream bag, tho: perfect mix of vintage classic and modern funky.

  • Anonymous

I like the first one, but the other two just look a bit arts and crafty for me. But clearly the best thing about this post is seeing Nicole Kidman look like a movie star again in that first photo after her unfortunate last couple outings.

  • Glen Coleson

don’t mind it so much in the promo pics, but it looks horrid in the candids.

  • Like the shapes, hate the colors.

  • my gut says nay because they look like the first gimp lanyard i made when i was 8 (the black and orange too!)
but they look pretty stylish with the celebs in the photo…so maybe yea?

  • Anonymous

    Yea, in the Kidman model.

  • Aly Light

Nay. Orange and black, artsy-craftsy crap.

  • Anonymous

It’s more Hollywood magic: the hideous little bag that looks great hanging off the arm of a tall, gorgeous, famous woman. What can you do?

  • Anonymous

A complete and total YEA!!  I hope they make some messenger bags for men in this collection, I would spring for that.  It’s a great, colorful look without the real risk of being outdated or trendy in a year.  Reminds me slightly of the LV tiny tone on tone squares collectiion they did a few years back that still looks great anywhere.

  • Anonymous

Nope, unless it’s for trick-or-treat.  Other colors, quite possibly a yes, puh-leeze!

  • mandyjane123700

    Nay, they’re ugly.

  • Love them. Yea

  • Anonymous

Um, no.  Grandma wants her placemats back.

  • kim i

  • Anonymous

So cool!  Check out the Prada e-store, these come in all black and black/brown that is gorgeous.  Zoom in on the product picture and you can clearly see they are very well made with top of the line leather.  Not craft project at all.

  • nay! it looks like those crafts kids do at summer camp.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Nay, and its not just the color – its just plain cheap and tacky looking

  • NAY. At least in that orange.

  • yea

  • NAY?

Its looks kinda drab, even with the orange, almost like crocus.

  • Anonymous

ugly. if only they’d picked some lovely colors instead of that ugly shite. whatevs. Please, don’t make me look at your ugly purse anymore.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

LOVE these bags but most likely would never carry one. For one, Prada is out of my budget range. Two, I prefer a solid bag so there isn’t a pattern clash that has to be resolved before I leave the house. (Although, these would look great with my black winter coat. Too bad about that budget…sigh!). Finally, I’ve always found these woven leather goods to be quite heavy so I tend to stay away from them. I’m in New York City and commute by foot and subway so I try to keep my bag as lightweight as possible without looking cheap of course.

  • horribledanger

I like orange, I like black–I love the color combination. Not a fan of that tight weaving, or the shapes of any of these. And they make me think of candy corn. Nay.

  • ket

    i dig it

  • Nicole St. Germain

Nay. It looks like crocheted plastic.

  • Anonymous

“Yea” to the shape and size of 1 and 2. “Nay” otherwise, throughout. I love me some orange, but the weave/pattern and color combo are fugly.

  • NAY.

  • Anonymous

Yea. I like the first two the best. I’m not sure it is something you’d want to carry every day, but I think it punches up a look.

  • Anonymous

Yea to #1 and #3. It’s a bit too Halloween for my taste but I absolutely love orange.

  • Anne Jiao

The edges look messy on the first two making it look like hobo shopping bags. But YAY to the third purse

  • Anonymous

I actually love the shape of the last one, but that woven orange & black makes them look cheap (like those plastic burlap laundry bags). If they were woven of the same color I would love the last one.

  • Anonymous

NAY. It looks like Nascar mated with a cheap purse.

  • Yea!

  • Luisa Vervoorn

    meh. nay.

  • NAY.  Hate the colors.

  • Yup, like them a lot. Nice to see a ‘serious’ bag that doesn’t look so torturedly SERIOUS>

  • FUGGGLY. The vibrating colors make my eyes hurt.

  • Yea!  I love them.  Although I do think they are more appropriate for fall than summer…..

  • Tania Skevos

    Love it!

  • dickinson-julie

A Yea with reservations – I’d like it in lighter, brighter colors, not so keen on the orange and black.  A lot of people have posted various craft projects that they remind them of.  My first thought when I saw the purses was those pot holders that I used to weave out of little cotton loops on a small square loom thingie. (I always used to like to do mine in hot pink and black, but that was in my Barbie days.)

  • Cassie Gentry

Gotta say nay…if that didn’t have a Prada label on it, no one would be caught dead with this 10-year-old’s craft project.

  • Gigantic yay from me.

  • YEA! I think the color combo is uncommon and the texture is quite intriguing.

  • IDK… it kind of looks like those potholders we used to make in summer camp, all sewn together

  • I like the smallest version of the bag, but the pattern is just too small for the scale of the larger two.  I get the Halloween critique, but it doesn’t bother me here.

If you were asking me whether I would pay Prada prices for these though?  Hell no.

  • Carrie L. Boram

    Me likey!

  • Anonymous

DANGER, WILL ROBINSON!!  Absolutely nay, this has no redeeming characteristics, no matter how luxe the leather and how incredibly crafted it is.  I wouldn’t carry it even if I could afford it.

  • p. clementine

  • Anonymous

Orange is one of my favorite colors, but I think they’re kind of ugly when looking at them up close and alone.  When the women are carrying them, though, they look pretty stylish, especially Nicole and Jessica.  I think I gotta go with YEA on this one.

  • Nay. They look like they were made by a really bored occupational therapy class.

  • Anonymous

NAY.  I don’t mind the Halloween colors or the weaving individually, but when you put them together it looks TICKERY TACKERY.  The artsy/craftsy aesthetic falls into two categories for me.  There’s the vintage-y homemade look, and then there’s the ‘this is a bad decision I made on Etsy; turns out it was made by a 12 year old at camp.’  This bag is the latter.

  • Anonymous

I like Hippie-Craft-Fairs and even sell my own things there! But I still wouldn’t want this bag.

  • Anonymous

LOVE IT! Especially the tiny one.

  • Anonymous

I say YEA–don’t like it personally, but have to say it adds interest and style to Nicole Kidman’s look in that first shot.  She would look quite ordinary otherwise (and why shouldn’t she–she’s at the airport), and the bag kicks it up a notch.

  • Geez, if only I could afford to spend $2,500 on a butt-ugly purse.  Nay.

  • I like them, so yea! But less so for the middle one.

  • Nay!

  • nay looks like a potholder

  • Wow.  I’m surprised by all the Nay’s.  I think they’re adorable.

  • Anonymous

Nay, looks like something you could buy from a street vendor.

  • Anonymous

Nay. The color combo is absolutely Halloween like others have said it looks way too home made for it to be worth the price tag.

  • Nay! This has summer craft project written all over it.
*Bad colours. This ain’t Halloween. Put your brooms away.
*The weaving seems really sloppy. Are we sure this is Prada or did they all get ripped off with some Downtown LA Prado?
*Sizing is off. Nicole’s looks like a plastic sports bag from afar, all shes missing is a water bottle. And Uma’s apparently carrying around like five dogs in there.
*What is this made of? ‘Cause it looks like plastic. And dammit, if I’m paying for a plastic bag, it better be hella cute.
Just buy the better version from those Central American native tribes.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

Nay. Agree with the fugly-craft-project comments. It looks like something I would have made when I was four, at day camp, on the potholder board. And why is it called the “Madras” bag? What about this bag has anything to do with the city in India?

And the version Uma is carrying does look like it should have chihuahuas in it.

    • Anonymous

Madras is used as a fancy word for orange.  It’s the “proper” name for a vodka and OJ, too.

      • Anonymous

I didn’t know madras referred to color! I always thought it had to do with patterns common to the Madras area in India, particularly plaid. Color makes sense, though, especially in conjunction to the drink of vodka, OJ and cranberry (just vodka and OJ is a Screwdriver).

  • Christine Marie

Neither yea nor nay. More along the lines of “Why not?” We’ve all seen worse.

  • Anonymous

I never went to camp or became a girl scout, so I have no reference point for that. I love the one Nicole is carrying. Realistically, I’ll never have one, but in my dreams, I’d wear the hell out of it.

  • lilibetp

You can get something prettier on Etsy.

  • Anonymous

Not only is it ugly, but the pattern isn’t particularly madras-y.

  • Nay.

  • Total Monet – interesting and cool from far away, hiddy toilet roll cover from up close.

  • Julia McLean

Nay. All it has going for it is the Prada label. Fug.

  • love halloween love that its my highschools colors (to bring some retro back in my life) and love love love the look.  wish i had the mula for it.

  • Nay!  Though Nicole and Jessica are carrying them pretty fashionably.

  • Lisa

  • Anonymous

    I don’t get it!

  • NAY!  They look great from a distance, but up close their fugly!  They look like something crafted at a kid’s summer camp or VBS.

  • Amy F

Nay. I made potholders just like them as a kid…in better colors.

  • taodon

It’s what all the fashionista bag ladies are wearing this season.

  • Patricia Biswanger

Yet another showy status symbol, purchased for its recognizibility, not its beauty or functionality.

  • margaret meyers

Looks like a summer camp project… which it probably is for a lot of children in China or Indonesia or wherever Prada has its bags made.  They look tatty and DIY.

  • Anonymous

Really ugly. I love orange too but does not work here. Not for summer especially.

  • I really love it.  Don’t know why, but I love it.  =)

  • Just looked up the price: $2650!!!!!!! Get the fuck outta here!

    • peter ryan

Anyone spending that much on a bag deserves to be punched in the face on the street. At least they’ll be easy to target.

  • Anonymous

I don’t care for the tote, but the others are right up my alley.

  • Hilary Sullivan

  • omg yay yay yay i am in love with this

  • Not for $2650!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

I like the basic shape of the one Nicole Kidman is carrying, but not the orange color. Hate the one Uma Thurman has all around. I don’t know if that counts as a yea or a nay. Maybe 30% yea and 70% nay.

  • Anonymous

It has some interest to it, it’s deferent from the same o…and i like the colors for spring or autum, but its far from something i would dream to buy… Nay

  • A big, fat NAY.  Looks like those potholders we used to make for our mothers in scouts.  And the color is obnoxious.

  • Anonymous

I’ve moved away from macrame and onto weaving….

  • Anonymous

I LOVE them sitting pristinely in the photos.  I HATE them filled with stuff, on the arms of real people.  There’s not enough structure to them, and they look stretched out and sloppy.  I have hope for the teeny one.

    • The tote is the worst offender.  Totes are by nature shapeless sacks of uhg, it looks like one of those $1 reusable bags you can buy at the farmer’s market.

  • Nay nay.

  • I saw the “madras” in the header and got all excited.

    Now I’m just sad.

  • Anonymous

Looked like something “Aunt Florstina” made badly in her macrame class.

  • Yea for me. It’s interesting

  • It’s an instant YAY.

  • Yea!  I’d have fun with that (however, orange is a great color for me!)!

  • No.

You know. If you had described the bag to me it would have been an unreserved NAY. However, seeing them on the arms of these lovely ladies, I’m going YEA on this. It’s a great way to spice up an otherwise run-of-the-mill outfit.

  • Anonymous

  • i can dig it.

  • If it were from a hipster DIY craft fair it would be kind of cute. Prada for 4 grand? No. Would rather put that new patio on my house, thanks very much.

  • Elizabeth Denton

  • blech!

  • Nay—looks like it’s made of those potholders you weave from cotton loops.

  • Anonymous

    J’adore! Gimme the top one.

  • Susan Woolley

Not good…..with all the beautiful bags available they choose those???

  • Alina Valero

nay. fugz. sorry prada. the styles are cute but i’m not feeling it AT ALL.

  • Yea. It’s cute.

  • Megan Sullivan

YEA. I think it’s a very fun bag and makes every single one of those celebrities’ outfits look more interesting. And as for the Halloween color comments, they are just two colors. Why should a holiday dictate color dos and don’ts in fashion? Why not pair them together? And it’s a bag, not a gown or something, which I feel would be a little more difficult to pull off in orange and black.

  • In different colors, sure.

  • Anonymous

    It’s ugly. I don’t care if it’s “in.”

  • It’s so weird reading this blog as a fashion student…they tell us to make these crazy original designs, but any time something with the slightest bit of personality or edge shows up on this blog, especially accessories, the commentariat get vicious.  Although, something tells me these bags are made for people who can buy so many bags that they tire of the boring, sensible ones, and go for something more interesting.

    • Anonymous

Good observation. But while I loved Austin’s cornhusk dress on Project Runway, I certainly wouldn’t wear it. I think you and these celebrities are doing conceptual, while the majority of people think pretty and practical.

IF I had so much money that I could give enough to charity that I could justify owning a stable of expensive purses, YEA.

As one of only five or six purses one rotates (including a couple of evening clutches & a casual tote), no way, ever.

  • If someone gave me one, I would probably find a use for it, but I’m not going to buy one.

    It’s okay.

  • Anonymous

I hjave no opinion either way on this one. Kind of enh. I guess that would be Nay, then.

  • Lies L.

I love the designs but hate the colours. Black and orange. Really? Nay.

  • What are they made of?  They look like fabric or straw and their floppiness makes them look a little sloppy with non-beach wear.  And those colors are so specific.  The choice of materials screams “summer” but the colors don’t for me.   Gotta give them an OUT.

  • On Alba, YEA. The rest, NEA.

  • There’s only one way to feel about a bag named after a curry. NAY.

  • Anonymous

NAY! Make that Double NAY! NAY-NAY!

  • Djinn in a bottle….

That bag is beyond hideous but, Prada is one of the best at marketing crap like this and I just read they are completely oversubscribed for an IPO in Hong Kong (where else?).  Also, is it or are those the Hermes colours as well?

  • Hate it. And btw, I love Nicole Kidman. But married life and her good fashion sense clearly does mix well. What happened to my girl?

  • I think a bag like this (which is fug, btw) is a good litmus test of who really has style and who either blindly does as their stylist says, or blindly buys into marketing and hype.

No one with functioning retinas would think these bags were anything other than Miucca’s practical joke on the fashion victims of the world.

  • Anonymous

    I think they’re cool!

  • Anonymous

So much yea. It’s a fabulous combination of super cheesy-bordering on kitsch and well-made actual style.

  • Megan Stoner

Ugh. It looks like one of those potholders everyone weaves when they’re six.

  • A hearty yea from me! They’re flashy and fab.

  • Hilary Sain

  • Anonymous

For $2650??? No thanks, I think I will spend the money on my dog rescue or to feed kids.

Seriously, Kidman has on glasses inside, doesn’t want to be recognized, maybe she should ditch the 3K bag. If she were wearing a TJ Maxx raincoat and a Anne Klein bag for $100, no one would look twice at her.

  • nay

  • Derelicte’s Halloween candy bags.

  • Derelicte’s Halloween candy bags.

  • Nay…ugly ugly ugly!

  • Anonymous

I love them (except for the middle/Uma one – don’t like the shape). They’re fun and bright, but the black tones them down enough that they’d go with lots of things. I don’t get all the hate – these bags are definitely a bit more on the crafty-looking side than most, but they still come across as polished and fashionable. I wouldn’t(/couldn’t!) pay what these cost to own one, but I like looking at them, and I think they contribute to each of the outfits above (except Uma’s – that one really does bug me!).

  • Joyce VG

  • akprincess72

I’m sorry, they are just ugly.

  • Mar

  • Nay.  Shall I say they look….cheap?

  • YEA!

  • Anonymous

Nay.  They look like something I would have made in arts and crafts during a rainy day in Summer Rec.

  • Anonymous

I love these.  However, I wouldn’t pay Prada prices for one.  I’ll wait for the Fossil (or cheaper) version.

  • Mariah J

If orange goes with your outfit, rock it. Its much better than the Coach, Louis Vutton etc logo purses.

  • Anonymous

NAY, looks like a homemade Harley Davidson bag made out of potholder loops.

  • My thought: the bags are so ugly there won’t even be any ripoffs. At least the celebs have a purse that is even more recognizable than their faces.

  • I love the texture, but I’m not crazy about the colorway.

  • Terence Ng

Oh good, a bag that not only 10 year olds in sweatshops can make, but one that your typical summer-camp kid can be forced to make with lanyard at craft time.

  • Nay, too summer-camp-crafty. Done in halloween colors.

  • Anonymous

Also a Yea.  I like the woven colors.

  • Anonymous

  • Maria Figueroa

Nay. They look like cheap plastic.

  • NAY — or neigh, like a horse 🙂

  • Diana Martinez

UGLY! And what the heck is Uma wearing on her feet??

  • Anonymous

Why does it appear that these women are usually carrying empty bags/purses?  That looks sillier than any of the bags

  • Elizabeth Winer

If it didn’t say “Prada” on the front, no one would be carrying those ugly bags.

  • No. Just … no.

  • nay.

    That shit is ugly. NAY.

  • shorty j

I say HELL yeah, but I’m an old ska kid who loves anything with checkerboard. I think it’s cute as hell, but I wouldn’t pay Prada prices for it. Now Target, on the other hand… 😛

  • Anonymous

  • Nay. So ugly.

  • Oooh, yay!  I actually really like it.  I like the flap top satchel much more than the other two styles, however.

  • aimee_parrott

Nay!  Hate the colors, and they look cheap.

  • Couture made from a potholder?  Nay.

  • Couture made from a potholder?  Nay.

  • ICK! NAY!

  • I complained that this cost way too much money at $2,650. Where did my comment go?

  • Anonymous

    Nay. They look home-sewn

  • Nay. Not loving them.

  • NEA
This is even uglier than the Louis Vuitton bag where the LV print was rendered in every possible eye searing color.

  • Anonymous

there is another colors for that bag and i realy like the brown one
